The 2024 Lexus GX550 is A Land Cruiser With A Lexus Badge | MotorWeek Road Test

  • When most people think of Lexus SUVs, they tend to think of the RX, and for good reason. The RX was a key player in popularizing the luxury SUV market as we know it today. But, the Lexus SUV world is much bigger than that, of course, including something for adventurous, rugged, off-road types.

      It's not targeted towards you. It's for people who do Crossfit and wear backwards flat brim snapbacks with tribal tattoos lol.
      Experts and inside sources hinted at this 3 years ago incognito. This is for the rugged bro types with deep pockets and want a Lexus still.
      For reference: See TRDJon.
      Those who want luxury with wood, now must buy the LX 600.

      That is because it also is more luxurious. New Lexus models are all much cheaper inside due to aggressive cost cutting. There is no reason to buy Lexus anymore, it's sad.

    Lexus GXs hold their value well. A 2009 GX with 150k miles will sell for 12k in 2024, because they hold their value well, and can last a long time.
    One of my relatives had a 2005 GX that they bought in 2005 and still have it today.

    “BODY ON FRAME”, #1 reason I’m trading in my 2022 BMW X5 for this. I had no idea what a unibody vs body on frame was. I was in a terrible car accident 15 years ago. I was in a Nissan 350Z. A man just decided he’d run me down in his truck. Broke every bone in my leg. He’s in prison. Luckily I had a DashCam. Completely random. I promised myself I’d never drive a car ever again and started driving SUVS. Only to find out this year watching videos on this vehicle that I’m actually still driving A FUC$&@!ing CAR! A UNIBODY. Speed and performance of the X5 were a wonderful bonus but not the prime reason I bought the vehicle. Had I know this terminology about car frames I would have went to Lexus and Toyota first. My neighbor drives a Tesla and constantly reminds me his carbon footprint is lighter than mine. I asked him how many miles a day he drives and charges off the grid. Once he realized my heavier gas guzzler actually just stays parked and asleep in my garage because I work from home he shut up. My lifestyle and job affords me a heavy gas guzzler and I still have 1/5 the carbon footprint of Tesla neighbor. Also According to Highway crash test ratings being better and much higher on body on frame my insurance has dropped for the car and my life insurance also is lower. “RISK ASSESSMENT” I am far more likely to arrive home alive than my Tesla neighbor and the insurance Companies know this.

    • @Ulvaeus
      @Ulvaeus Місяць тому +1

      Safety involves a number of factors. If you look at real world fatality rates for specific vehicles, in general, bigger and heavier can do better, but not always. Many other factors enter into it. Big body on frame SUV’s have much higher risk for tip over, and can be more ponderous in handling and less good at short stopping ability. Accident avoidance is part of a vehicle’s skill set too.

      No, the tundra, and Lexus LX have a different engine, similar but different. This one has been detuned a bit and has smaller turbos. It's based on the same design and Toyota has figured out the issue with the engine and has implemented a fix at the manufacturing level. The Car Care Nut on UA-cam did a great video on it about 2 weeks ago.

    Toyota cheapened out on this model versus the previous GX460. The interior has far more hard plastic, the luxurious roof liner is gone, and while before the EK-DSS system (to prevent body roll) was on all trim levels, it is now only on the Overtrail version. Add to that a hood that vibrates/shakes at freeway speeds and the problem with the twin turbo motor spinning its main bearings, this is not an improvement on the previous model.

      I think the engine versions are very very close… tuning is different for sure. As much as I want to like the GX, there’s no way I’m buying one till Toyota gets it together on this engine. The engine’s bad press and (apparent) lack of good faith to make corrections is going to hurt them until they come clean.

  • @D8099.
    @D8099. Місяць тому +1

    A few gripes: with a vehicle this heavy and also a luxury category they should offer a larger brake and brake disc option, something BMW X5 has spoiled me with. Also more off-road rim tire choices, the land cruiser off-road rims and tires look far better. A lift leveling kit should be offered, looks a little stupid with the back higher than the front “to the trained eye”. Land Cruiser is definitely crossed off my list because it’s only available in hybrid. I will never be tricked into having a large battery again. A hybrid will not last 200,000 miles like older Toyotas and Lexus unless you’re willing to spend 18,000$ to replace the battery every 50,000 miles. Yea yea the battery still works at 50K with only 40% charging capacity and a MASSIVE drop in horsepower. That won’t be a problem in this V6 here we are looking at.

    • @Riskmangler
      @Riskmangler Місяць тому

      If the X5 had off road capability, it would own the segment.

  • @jimmy-buffett

    "The 2024 Lexus GX550 is A Land Cruiser With A Lexus Badge"
    And a nicer interior, and a bigger / better engine (if/once they confirm it's not impacted by the oiling issue), 2 more forward gears, a lower rear deck because no hybrid battery. Oh, and an Overtrail is the same price as how you'd spec a Land Cruiser for offroading? Easy choice then.
    I spent a couple of days in Moab in a new press loaner Land Cruiser. It didn't feel premium, everything you touch / see is cheap. Powertrain was a notch above adequate, the seats were comfortable. But every other complaint I had with it is fixed by the Lexus GX. For the same money.
    Toyota screwed up this 4Runner / Land Cruiser / GX product cycle. The 4Runner and Land Cruiser having the same powertrain is going to cost them Land Cruiser sales. They should have put the Land Cruiser where the GX Overtrail / Overtrail+ lives, and had the GX focus on luxury.
    I'm buying a GX to offroad in Colorado, it's replacing a heavily modified 4Runner. It will be nice to finally have a truck that doesn't struggle on I-70.

    • @thatoneotherotherguy
      @thatoneotherotherguy Місяць тому +1

      A 2025 4Runner could do the same once it comes out. The 4.0L doesn't do 75mph steep high altitude climbs very well, but that new 2.4L turbo, sans hybrid, does.
      If they ever offer the Land Cruiser 250 without the hybrid, turbo four only, I'd go for that; but I suspect they wont. Regardless I love my '23 4Runner and I can certainly live with choosing to rev it out or go slower on steep high speed mountain climbs. I'm also in the Utah/Colorado area.

    • @jimmy-buffett
      @jimmy-buffett Місяць тому +1

      @@thatoneotherotherguy Part of why my 4.0L doesn't do I-70 well is because I've added 800 pounds of armor, bumpers and winch to it. The lift and bumper also hurts the aerodynamics. I did it to the truck, I accept that. But this is why so many people considering FJs and 4Runners for offroading have been buying V8 GX's for years now. Because you can do all that to it and it still has enough power.

    The hood on the Lexus GX 550 is thinner than a beer can. Go tap on the hood lightly and see how much it flexes. Then drive it over 45 mph and watch the reflection in the hood as it buffets in the wind stream. The land cruiser has a much thicker hood.

Show me more than a few actual issues. And show 1 GX engine failure. I’m not even a Lexus fanboy. But I know Lexus is more proactive than ford who has had 10000s of ecoboost
      failures. Also look up the 5.7 and 4.6 v8s had a larger number or recalls in the first few years yet you’d paprbabky say most reliable motor ever made. Again show me a gx550 engine failure.

      @costaricasurf66 you are making a ridiculous argument. Obviously the GX has not been out long enough in the hands of customers for engines to fail, in case Toyota hasn't properly fixed the manufacturing problems that is the cause according to Toyota itself. Stop with your show me 1 GX engine failure nonsense.

    Lexus makes a Land Rover Defender that will work everyday, and keep its resale value
    You are giving up a more luxurious interior, and your losing a step in performance
    I would expect Lexus to offer the more potent six-cylinder hybrid in 2025, to better compete with the Defender, which offers more speed and power, for similar money.
