Been living in Japan 40 years now, seen a lot of Pat Metheny and I think three performances by Herbie Hancock ... Mt. Fuji Jazz, Select Live Under the Sky, and Tokyo Blue Note, but unfortunately not this one. So glad it is on UA-cam now. Even now, early HeadHunters and especially the V.S.O.P. album are my go-to listens when driving down the expressway to the seas southwest of Tokyo. My closest brush with greatness was sitting about 3 meters from Herbie at the old Tokyo Blue Note before they moved to a larger venue. Actually shook hands with him after the show.

BOSTON GLOBE JAZZ FESTIVAL Headhunters w Wah Wah Watson 77' or78' Sonny Rollins on the bill as well as Gato Barbieri. headhunters had to hold up starting the set because you could see in the dark somebody up front was smoking something. Turns out was Wah Wah sitting out in front They did an encore or two and finished up with a bang and everybody was bowing and exiting the stage. Wah Wah Watson got halfway up, pause for a millisecond and sat back down and played all by himself. After a while bass player came back out and they continued to jam. after a while the drummer came back out. Little by little the whole band was back on stage jamming. Everybody who was on the bill came out at one time or another together, solo etc. and the band played on with one loooong badass jam. they had to announce that the Trains and busses were about to end service for the night. A few hundred of us stayed through the whole jam. which ended around 1:30 AM. Most of us milled around for a bit in total awe of what we had just witnessed and heard. Thank You Wah Wah Watson!

Herbie per usual all channels working. Masterful performances from his chosen in time. I swear they pay sweet homage to all the greats that’ve come before us in fusions of jazz. A true trance fusion by its end!
Watermelon man definitely too slow! Drummer doesn't do it for me, very unimaginative fills. Impressed with Marcus though, I thought he would play everything with his thumb on his Jazz Bass but he actually plays all those Paul Jackson lines on a P-Bass and it sounds great. Makes you wonder on the other hand why they didn't just let Paul Jackson play if it's anyway his lines..
I was in another room when this came on- I was like man, the wah- wah is so cool. Only one person plays like THAT Wah-Wah WATSON!!!!! YASSSS!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 It’s like they all have super powers.
It's all about the music: the feel motivator, the now in improvisation, an organic process being creative right in front of your eyes with real musicians real instruments plugged in for your entertainment, from the first to the last note. Herbie always cutting edge w/unexpected rhythms with world rich influence, delving into past memories with a "dash of scat" and sharing with us driving beat and rhythms and lilting melodies that will both rock you out/then melt you in your seat with this rare band performance. Twenty five minutes in a French horn solo that transcends you higher, to a place where Herbie stands on key. This, is Essence of jazz music and a touch of the beginnings master class funk to make you "Busta-move". Enjoy the ride and watch your head.
Herbie on keys, Marcus Miller bass, Lionel Loueke guitar, Johnny Guitar Watson other guitar, Terry Lynn Carrington on drums, Roy Hargrove Trumpet and maybe Don Alias percussion (not sure here)
my very first instrument was bass clarinet.. all the way thru college and in 2010 when i picked up bass guitar, Marcus Miller play "When I Fall In Love" convinced me that I could play the bass and bass clarinet. that's how the journey began.

My Groove! In fact, my older brother Trevor, had a Radio Show in Chicago, called "The Groove Merchant" I've never heard it. I searched for it. If I buy the Chicago Tribune, I might be able to find it, and hear Trevor Bull's old Radio Shows. He also did a hunting show called "Range & Field" or something. No, it wasn't "Field & Stream".

Agree, not keen on the drumming. Marcus is at his best here. Would have loved to see Paul though.
The pocket straight out the gate is fucking crazy. Love seeing wah wah Watson having that much fun too!
I was in another room when this came on- I was like man, the wah- wah is so cool. Only one person plays like THAT Wah-Wah WATSON!!!!! YASSSS!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 It’s like they all have super powers.
This is my food. Thank you Miles for indoctrinating these legends.
Are You the Dr. Funkenstein I know from Bob Davis' Soul-Patrol?
My thumbs hurt.
I really should know better than to watch Marcus Miller that closely...
It just don't GET no better than this.
Also:
OW.😖
Thank you Herbie Hancock!
Inmenso e inmejorable show.con los mejores musicos!!!
This makes Me miss Roy Hargrove more than ever.
I Seriously miss you Roy. When I hear you. I hear a Young Freddie Hubbard. Which means your a favorite of mine. RIP
Seeing Terri slay the mike clark actual proof groove is just special. Herbie nods his head lol!
The GROOVE is strong!
Herbie on keys, Marcus Miller bass, Lionel Loueke guitar, Johnny Guitar Watson other guitar, Terry Lynn Carrington on drums, Roy Hargrove Trumpet and maybe Don Alias percussion (not sure here)
this is wah wah watson, not johnny guitar, tho a great guitarist as well...
Percusión: Munyungo Jackson
That's not Johnny Guitar Watson on guitar. That's Melvin Ragin aka "Wah Wah Watson" from The Funk Brothers (MoTown)
@@breezecanada4038 I think he's gone too now.
@@janicekbryant Yes, sadly he died.
Thé sound of Mr Hargrove is perfect and very soft....😍😍😍😍😍
That version of Spider is simply fantastic!
This is real shit!!! Never can get enough when these fantastic musicians are all in sync with MD's vision!!🥰💯
The GROOVES are just SO .....ummmmm GROOVIN'! Impeccable!!! I can't stop movin' my body!! ha ha ha
5:53 Gil- Scott Herons voice! ;) This gig is pure fire!
my very first instrument was bass clarinet.. all the way thru college and in 2010 when i picked up bass guitar, Marcus Miller play "When I Fall In Love" convinced me that I could play the bass and bass clarinet. that's how the journey began.
What music is better than thus. like The 11th house by Larry C. So cool
If I were seeing this live there is no way I could stay seated - I would absolutely have to dance 🎶🔥🕺🏻
What a great band. Teri and Marcus are awesome.
That is massive talent and genius all in one place combined with musicality and joy to play. Rare documentation in music history.
If I could upvote this a thousand times I would.
Herbie Hancock and his group wove absolute magic in this period.
Thank you for this video.
This ensemble is absolutely incredible. Everyone is so talented together in this show. I totally agree.
For me every day is live jazz day! ❤️
'Roy Hargrove is pure fire!
What an incredible band.
This show is unique - Marcus opens WITHOUT MM Jazz Bass, instead a pre CBS precision with single coil? Herbie must have said some convincing words, that this was going to happen😂
What an unbelievable cast, I’m in Jazz heaven. 😊
Ithe, vere, freeeee, orxistra, stronk, master, ouan, mpai, ouan, ❤❤
Having seen the original lineup spoils this for me. No complaints. Herbie took a couple lessons from Joe Z. 😉
Herbie Hancock's music is TRANSFORMATIVE! :)))
Roy Hargrove actually played one of his first gigs in my city. Ft.Worth,TX at Caravan of Dreams club
I'm just comforted that Wah-wah hasn't changed his clothes in 30 years. Seriously gives me hope for my own future.

Mr. Watson and his jazz box. Always a pleasure.
Herbie Hancock is a change he brings very good collaboration and he have a real good sound for music
Saw this at Bonaroo, but I don’t think Wah Wah was there. Watched it from side stage, was working the show. If I remember correctly John Mayer sat in.
1000% 🔥🔥🔥
Who's playing the Bass on the song Butterfly when Marcus is on the Bass Clarinet? 🤔
The whole lot on this stage should live for 900 years! RIP Brotha Roy 🖤
Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
My sentiments exactly 💯!!!!!
I was 19 right in the center a few rows back.
Right in front of Herbie on the 73-74 first tour Yeah 👍🏻
This is what funky and I mean funky jazz it's about these musicians have it in their heart
No, it wasn't "Field & Stream".
why do these modern gigs sound so terrible (washed out sound in an empty barn) compared to the 1970's recordings?
ce concert est tout simplement monstrueux !
Sou do RN estado do Brasil, adoro seu som incrível .
Gotta love Wah Wah Watson grooving with the Gilligan hat
le groove 👌👍 + le feeling 👌👍=😍
Herbie, un honor, un placer, un gusto. Soy un admirador de siempre... Gracias por tantos buenos momentos.
There is a non credited ghost bass player at 21:22, when "Butterfly" beginns and Miller starts playing the bass clarinet
the drummer though 💯
