I used to run a monthly jazz concert as the double bass player in a piano ,drums, bass ,trio on the Isle of Man, and being friendly with Ronnie Scott, I would book artists from the United States to appear that came to London to play in his club, if they had a spare night for an away gig in the Isle of Man. This worked very well for Ronnie, for the artist, and for us in the Isle of Man, as it gave the trio the chance to step up a notch or two in our playing, with some of the best players in the world. Whenever I telephoned Ronnies' club in London, almost always, his business partner Pete King would pick up the phone and shout to Ronnie:
" Hey Ronnie ! It's Tony Williams asking for you ! " Ronnie would run to the phone thinking that it was THE Tony Williams drummer extraordinaire , and I always felt embarrassed to apologise to him that it was the Isle of Man Tony Williams. He kept his grace always, and we'd laugh it off.
anthony williams, cool story. Love these men and saw so many of my jazz heroes. Not sure if i ever saw Herbie. Don’t think so, saw Tony Williams numerous times. Thanks
Can imagine Ronnie doing that!...Tony W just one of the most superlative of players of all time. Thing is Tony could both swing the a** off anything and anyone as well as rock the sh** outta the heaviest of rocksters...with tenfold times more technique and finesse...one my greatest influences for sure...
@@peterdavis570, ever heard him on Stanley Clarkes’ 2nd solo? Power was crazy, Life Suite superb, Lopsy Lu...funky
Great story! -in the best tradition of ‘jazz-muso’ tradition, best told after a few beers,I shouldn’t wonder.
There’s Only one Tony Williams but funny all Tony’s are one ! Especially if there last names are Williams they suddenly become drummers with a calm attitude lol
ああ!何て贅沢でカラフルな時代を過ごしていたのだろう。ありがとう。
How appropriate this video pops up in my feed, Ron Carter turned 85 Wednesday 4 May 2022.
まだ二十代だった頃、東京から山中湖まで原付でいったことをおもいだしました
金がなく日帰りでした。
40年後の今、どうやって帰ったのか思い出せません。
毎日元気でした。
やはりジャズのせいかしら?
Why EVER watch anything else on UA-cam? 😎🎧🎵
Only heroin
Well, a good travel documentary or something.
This is what happens when masters play together... MAGIC
The interaction btn Hutcherson and Hancock after the 1:50 mark to the end of "Maiden Voyage" is on a whole other level of purity; the essence of the quintessence of what is blithely called jazz. My favorite vibraphonist, my favorite pianist and one of best bassists ever playing with my fave drummer. So amazing. Williams is the culmination of so many drummers before him; he is still the future of drumming.
So true - most of us drummers haven’t even begin to catch up with Tony Williams’ innovations and fearless leading.
Truth!
Tony William è e sempre sarà, assieme ad Elvin Jones i più importanti batteristi della storia del Jazz❤
I miss you Bobby,Tony,Freddie!❤
The trio is incredible here. Herbie's Funny Valentine is sublime.
you only needed these three guys...they will do...they will do just fine....
Tony was my all time drum hero. He surpassed everyone else.
Tony set a whole new standard. But there are some really amazing drummers out there now, who grew up on Tony's work, Brian Blade being one of the best.
I always loved Tony Williams. He was a real mfr, and extremely inspiring to see and hear! I saw every show, every year at The original Catalina's in LA. Ps. I also became friends with Elvin by going to all his shows, and hanging in his dressing room with him. He was another favorite mfr, and I was happy to be his friend. He used to pick me up and crack my back. Lol
I love it when Freddie Hubbard comes out fighting, which is always of course.
This is a fantastic compilation of some of the very best jazz musicians at the time. There are so many brilliant moments from each group. And, behind them all is Tony. What a force of nature. Thanks for putting this together for us all to enjoy.
Thank you for watching and commenting, but also thank you for immense musical contributions as well!
@@hughenmatt Ho yes, Ralph Humphrey, the one
thanks to you as well as a musician, I enjoy your playing still today
jazz will remain as the creation of the twentieth century
Sad so many people don’t understand how deep into music you have to be to be a jazz artist of the calibre of these masters. It is changing though, Glasper and the New Blue Note artists are catching younger larger audiences helped by other artists who get jazz, like Kendrick Lamar.Tony was the total drummer who could actually play anything he felt.
Enormous! So beautiful seeing these Cats and the great Tony Williams one of Juini Booth's favorites.
35 yrs ago! I was still living in JPN.
I appreciate the job done by the sound engineer : each instrument can be heard clearly and distinctly. Oh, and nice camera work too.
I recorded on VHS tapes (!) what was aired on TV every summer, and years later found some more on UA-cam. I thought I got just about all that was available, but in this compilation I found a few footages new to me. Thanks for that, too!
この時代を現地で体験できたことが、自分のJAZZ人生の宝物になっている、現在70歳、この時33歳~最高のバブルだ。
One of the joys of truly living is to hear possibilities. Miles has shown what is possible when one finds a milieu composed of compatible materials and talents resigned to hearing what is reaching in silence. That Band existed in his sub conscience and when given the opportunity to orchestrate that reality- Herbie, Ron, and Tony appeared. The outreach of these musicians is expressive through their search for the right notes and those forces that can sculpture them into an everlasting artistic achievement. When, musicians of the caliber are sequestered, the gods cry with joy.
Amazing concert(s) overview(s), top!
Well, given that Maiden Voyage is one of my all time favorite jazz tunes and Tony Williams appears throughout - this video gets 10/10
Herbie is in the top five of all jazz pianists in history and innovators(headhunters and changing how we would hear music). His teaming with Oscar Peterson on some jazz duos solidified him as the best in history to me).
That was Tony Willams best time...! So powerful play drums with Thunder and Lightning!
Sadly, Chick is gone, but Herbie is still with us. Long live Herbie!
You are Morbid! Their Music lives in the world forevermore! Wayne and Joe are gone! and a lot more artists you cared not to mention!
You are a disgrace, the worst comment on jazz music ever, 🎷 Who is your God!
Bobby Hutcherson was one of the coolest masters of his musical trade who ever lived! Thanks for putting these together!
There are not enough accolades to give these artists their just due . What an amazing collaboration of genius. Thank you 🙏🏻
Pure poetry,! Thanks from the heart,
Long time passed that time I'm in the Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival in Lake Yamanako
3 hours of musical divinity
Steinway and Bossendorfer get all the accolades but shit this Yamaha Herbie's on is the best sounding piano I think I've ever heard live. I suppose when you play Fuji, Yamaha is the go to rig. Kudos to the engineers. Just listen.
Thank you so much for this. Millennium artist/drummer: TONY WILLIAMS!!!
Yes the absolute one and only only only so very original and unique... all of them
Thank you for this labour love. It is deeply appreciated!
awsome!!!! Legends n masters!
Magnifique, l expression musicale, de la beauté du jazz, au bout des doigts...Un Dieu sauvage méconnu etrange cherche l homme encore et encore et le texte est cette musique incroyable...
OMG. 40:00 Hat and Beard from Out to Lunch.!
Une formation de toute beauté. Un pur bonheur...
Big thank you! Tony was the man...one of a kind!

Let it be Jazz....Thank You!!!
ah, Stolen Moments (around 48 min) , you should listen to the zappa band version from 1988, its excellent
1:47:55 They figuratively jumped off of a cliff in extremely dense fog , in the middle of the night, without parachutes. AND THEY LANDED …….TOGETHER!!!!!! Boy, was that passage thrilling!!!
うわぁなちぃなあ…毎年全日程行ったんよねぇ…

Just found er' but already 2021's off to a good start
Wowser I love it when Herbie plays pure jazz he always had his own style
Hopefully going to see him this Saturday. No idea who's in his band right now, but, it doesn't matter.
Thnx!! not Enough Tony Williams on YT!!
What an extraordinary concert!
Simplesmente um espetáculo, esses caras são muito bons. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
grazie stupendo
Herbie, Ron, Tony, Wayne. All early favorites as I grew my Blue Note and Columbia collections. Tony especially lit me up on those Miles recordings, and he was practically all I would talk about for several years. I like to assign bests, favorites, and although Blade is just as good, and Roy could really slay on any recording, Tony will always be my fav. He sits at the great table with Monk, Miles, Mingus. He was that good, and he could compose great tunes too. Dig how Miles goes on and on about him in his autobio.
Hat and beard is such a banger, Herbie sits out though his loss I guess 😂
11 ‘dislikes’ = 11 dead souls I look forward to meeting Never.
@Kiwi Geo Or with closed hearts? ;) 14 no-meet-people now ... but 1.029 likes ... accentuate the positive. :)
And now 21 idiots and counting 😫
Always got to be one spoiled sport
0:18 - Herbie's start is funny and magic at the same time. :)
Thank you very much for this,
hughenmatt. Love all of it.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!
Great. Thanks for uploading
Brilliant. Thank you.
The finest!
The track after "Hat And Beard" is called Stolen Moments by Oliver Nelson
Thank you for that! The tracklist has been updated.
Actually, I believe that is Black Narcissus.
My bad, I was thinking of the tune that starts at 29:46.
Increíble! Musica de primer nivel❤

So Sick!
How we can qualify the style of music Herbie Hancock has played throughout his life from70ies till today (cameleon, man child .. etc .. ) funky jazz ? ??free jazzy funk ? if someone expert can give his opinion !! Thank you so much 🙏🏾
Just listen - Herbie’s body of work is a Gift, making the world a better place for those who Listen and get it.
You ask what “style “ of music Herbie plays? He plays Herbie Hancock Music,he’s an original and a master at his craft ,he plays what he feels and thinks the music requires.
And Hutcherson, wow, he was the best sideman to have in the studio of any other Blue Note alum. There is not one BN album that he didn't elevate to a masterpiece. Not one. I saw him years ago after he had contracted emphysema, and he would hide out while upping his O2. All he did was play the melody of a standard, disappear to up his O2, reappear to solo, disappear, reappear, it was depressing. But he will live forever.
magnífico ...
1:01:47 - Me on a can after big steaming pile of extra spicy wings praying for pain-free tomorrow...
