    I really liked the way Akane's drums came out in the NHK mix: they seemed to have a force that matches the song. Like you said, you can hear her clearly. The distortion effect on Saiki's vocals is written into the original MV but only happens on the first part of the verses. Whatever effect it is that they used for the NHK show doesn't really sound like the one used in the MV.

    NHK is the national TV station of Japan if I'm not mistaken and since it's a TV station, that means the chances of post-processing and other trickery/overdubs are pretty high. Not by the band, a lot of TV stations just prefer to have fallbacks, although this wasn't streamed live, so who knows. I assume that's why everything sounds as it does. I actually feel like it sounds like a distorted album version instead of a live version in some parts. Also, these studios might not have the best acoustics either. That al said, I think they did a very good job on this one.
    Also whatever you think of the soundquality, being on this show a really positive thing for them. The NHK World channel always seemed to have the intention of sharing things about Japan with foreigners. Most things are subtitled or the hosts speak English. I think it's great that they try to show of some of their talented musicians as well, I have seen other artists pass by over the last year or two as well.
    As far as the video in the back goes, the track was created for that show.

      Thank you for the explanation ! Aldough, I really do not like the distorted sound because most bands use it to cover thier inadequate playing. I was hating the thought BM might be starting to travel down thus path.

      That's not necessarily the case for Japanese bands and certainly not for Band-Maid. I have seen plenty of them that actually sound pretty good to great live, but do use a lot of production tricks for their studio albums. I think it's partially because it's the type of sound that sells, partially because of trends (mainly the fact that a lot of bands tend to include electronica in their sound the last couple of years) and because a lot of people listen to music on their phone or computer speakers, which are typically not of a good quality. The Eventide effects Pedal that Kanami likes to use ever since Screaming and is on a lot of the tracks since the Unseen World album (it creates that very typical guitar sound a lot of Band-Maid tracks nowadays use) is her decision though. I think she just likes the sound it creates.

    NHK, may have messed up with the audio mix but our ladies playing is top notch!!! Gotta give kudos to the camera work though, it was damn excellent! Band-Maid management please take note!☺️🙏🏻

    One of the cool things about the three and a half hour Yokohama tour final Okyu-ji was the pacing. Their breaks, MCs, and solos gave all of them just the space they needed to catch their breath and still have enough energy to run around the arena performing "Choose Me". The performance of "Forward" right after was the best, a tip of the Maids' bonnets to Kentaro, and you could tell they were running on the emotions of the moment. And this carried over to "Endless Story".

    I'd like to see more live appearances like that on western TV...talk shows etc... Let the Maids roll over fresh audiences like thunder. 'Later with Jools Holland'...PLEASE!!!

    I'd love to know the circumstances. It looks for all the world like an awards show - the shiny stage floor, the set, the theater seating, the audience sitting on their hands ... it has a feel. Maybe the room mics are a large percentage of the sound and giving it the muffled sound. You can hear the band and the room echo too. If it _is_ an awards show, the sound techs may not be prepared for the volume of a rock band. But at least they didn't try to make it "Saiki and her backup band." The audience is pretty dead, give 'em free drinks! You're in the presence of greatness! Act like it!

    Fast with this one, Wave! They use that vocatl distortion in quite a few songs lately. And it's pretty overdone here, but what can you do? Just happy they're on tv. :) BTW there's "Magie" and "Brightest Star" fancams from Hong Kong if you wanted to be first to do a YT reaction with a video (I know you did the watch-along). Hope everything's going well and you're enjoying baby-time, Wave!

    NHK WORLD-JAPAN Music Festival 2023 featured 18 different bands and singers, so it must have been difficult to optimize the sound engineering for each one.

    Off topic: You were talking about the camera work. It reminded me of a news clip I saw the other day showing a leftist demonstration at a dance performance where they bulldozed onto the stage and were disrupting the dance. All of a sudden you see this boom camera with a 10" x 20" or so camera head on it, coming in for a close up, like here, or so he will say that's what he was doing...lol, and he rams the boom camera head into the demonstrators knocking them over and security sweeps in and collects them up off the floor. Loved it!

    Thank you Wsve for keeping real. You are one of 3 maybe 4 reactors who can truly break down a music vidio. The rest just yell n scream "Ohhh yaaa." One reactor keeps walking out if the room. 😒 I dont get it.

    I’ve always heard that megaphone distortion on Saiki’s voice during the opening lines in the MV. It’s a little more heavy handed in this broadcast, I think.

    Unfortunately this sounds exactly how heard it on netflix (maybe slightly better here) trying a few times to listen to the song. Initially thought it was the opening only to find out it was the ending song. Also, not quick enough to cancel skip to next episode. The opening song was clearer and you had to ff to skip the intro. I think the Maids got hosed by netflix.

    It’s a shame that they had to shorten the section after the first chorus. Just to gain few seconds.
    It took NHK a while to put this performance on their UA-cam channel. Didn’t they appeared in the tv show a month ago?

    Why did NHK only release this song? When I saw it appear in the recommendations on UA-cam Home, I was surprised because it made no sense.
    I can't praise the effects provided by NHK at this time, Saiki's voice continues to be distorted, and I think the balance of the sound of the performance is also poor.

    It sounds like Saiki n Miku singing over a recording. I know that often its hard to distinguish their live and studio stuff from each other, but something seems a bit strange about this one. Still sounds GREAT!

    Saiki's vocals are band-passed, distorted, and heavily compressed on the studio track as well, it seems even more in this performance. Well every Band Maid studio recording is over compressed. I can't listen to the studio recordings.

    • @DAVID-io9nj
      @DAVID-io9nj 5 місяців тому

      I also was bothered by the compression. Then I stumbled onto a way to make it bearable. My Denon receiver has a mode called "pure direct". Many other brands have a similar setting, with different names. It cuts out a lot of the unneeded circuits and gives a "cleaner" sound.

    • @MaartenT
      @MaartenT 5 місяців тому

      Honestly, make that most studio recordings by most Japanese bands are overcompressed nowadays. I prefer live sets by the majority of bands mainly because of the overproduction, mainly on vocals (for my taste) and overcompression. It's not that I can't listen to a lot of them and it actually doesn't bother me as much for Band-Maid as for some others (like Trident or Fate Gear for example or the Asterism EP's with vocals), but I always felt like a lot of Japanese producers seem to produce their rock music like they would for J-Pop. It sometimes sounds like they push everything into one tiny 64kbps mp3 from the early 2000's without any bass or treble that is quietly in the background with a very loud vocal track in front of it. Band-Maid doesn't do it that extremely luckily.
      And that certainly didn't get better with them going to Pony Canyon. But there is clearly a big audience for that sound, more than there are people who prefer rawer sounding music like I do, so who am I to tell them they are wrong. I will still say I prefer a rawer sound though. But to be fair, Unseen World is still my favourite Band-Maid album and it was already pretty bad on that one, so it's not like it makes me not enjoy the music in the case of Band-Maid. They generally don't use the type of effects on Saiki's vocals that I really dislike like some other bands do.
      I personally despise compression of music, the loudness wars and compression kills a lot of nuances in music at it's a shame that it's this prevalent in a scene where there is so much talent. I have a feeling a lot of them just use compression on everything because it takes less work than mixing it an other way (but to be fair, I am not a mixing engineer and have no proper experience whatsoever, so who knows). People listening on shitty phone speakers probably doesn't help with that either, they mix so it works on as many devices as possible, so bye-bye bass and treble.
