Frankly my friend....imho.....Tono/Kobato is this era's Lennon/McCartney.....its the Beatles meet Alice n Chains.....so hard, yet delicate....so intricate, yet simple....constantly undulating between styles.....they are truly masters of juxtaposition.....I absolutely ADORE these young ladies.....humble geniuses

Was my favorite song on the album right off the bat. Now a couple of others are tied with it. Those maids!

This band never ceases to amaze me in how coherent everything is despite how batshit crazy the individual parts are.
Also this song had me immediately because I just love that dark ominous opening riff so much. It's definitely one of 10-15 B-M songs that are in my top 3.

Personally speaking, I really like it. I can relate this to a Yes reaction I saw. Basically the guy said some people just want to hear a song, they can't appreciate or identify with greatness and masterpieces. This song crosses the line into the realm of prog rock. Stylistically it doesn't sound like King Crimson but it crosses into some of those musical sharp edged realms. I need about a ten to fifteen minute song like this from them. That's what I keep hoping for.

The three songs without MV on this EP are a treasure. Balance, I'll and Hate?, they are top tier Band Maid. And I think they measure very well the tremendous compositional maturity of the girls. And the lyrics, of course. Another part of The Gap. No one would imagine the character played by Miku thinking about pain and scars. Deeply smart girls...

Ryan, I’ve been waiting to hear your thoughts on I’ll. I’m still marveling at how great a song it is. The instrumentals are amazing, brutal, and relentless, but SAIKI’s powerful and soaring vocals and KOBATO’s harmonies captivate me from beginning to end, starting with the very first lyric, “Yakusoku-shita mirai nontenai,”which I interpret as, “The future they promised doesn’t exist.” The call and response of optimism, “Coming up, Let’s go!” is the climax.

I was just trying to explain to someone today why I love this band so much, and kept saying how most bands in the worlds (especially nowadays) choose either to be catchy or musically interesting. Band-Maid does both which alone is impressive, but then layers on technicality and depth. I just keep loving this band more and more the deeper I get.

Akane's going hell for leather on about 2/3rds of Unseen World and Unleash. I think it's easy to miss most of what she's doing in these songs on a casual listen because she's so musical that it doesn't feel like overplaying - the percussion just blends into what everyone else is doing and it's all tucked under a strong melody. But when you focus on the drums, then you realize how nuts her part actually is.

Every time I hear a few new things. This time I heard the great cymbal work -- thanks for pointing that out! That bridge/solo leading into the final chorus is simple but also unexpected and sublime. Thanks for the deep dives!

On Unseen World, they developed various stylistic choices and attitudes for separate songs. Since then, they have IMHO been working on integrating them together. Branch out, develop the branches, then converge them. This is how whole genres find new options, influences and combinations. Most bands stay on their branches. Only very few bands undergo this whole creative cycle on their own. I think this EP is exactly in the middle of the convergence process.

The vocals are one of my favorite aspects. I love Saiki’s sassy voice. And the wall-to-wall vocals in the second verse? And how low in volume they became. I swore they scrunched down to sing that part. I also thought at first there was vocal swapping like Freezer. But no, both singers machine gunned those lyrics.
I haven’t really heard a great double kick danceable song like that (and Corallium) since White Zombie’s Grindhouse a Go-Go.

I see you doing what I do so many times when I listen to B-M, I simply start laughing -- nothing funny, it's just so amazingly good I can hardly believe it. Usually it has something to do with what Akane and Misa are doing together. I mean you start with a great and prolific composer in Kanami, always pushing herself to greater heights, and then add in the unique and fantastic contributions from Misa and Akane. Not to diminish Miku and Saiki either, but the Wow moments are usually in the instrumental parts for me. So much talent in one band. Amazing.

Other than the obvious other tracks on this EP (generally less than 30 minutes long), got less attention. Akane has the best tuned drums that I have ever heard. Not the first Band-Maid song to have vocals that sound like the Spice Girls in the chorus. Kanami's solo is totally outrageous and unpredictable- genius.

  • @alanstamper4345

The part 5:13 of your video where the vocals open up, becoming light airy over the hard background of the instruments, yet still staying a coherent piece of music. It’s both brilliant and beautiful to listen to.

    • @alanstamper4345
      @alanstamper4345 10 місяців тому +1

Another thing I notice, is that from the beginning of the song that the vocal cadence seems to be on the down beat (Ryan you may have a better term for this) and when the vocals open up they shift to being on the main beat, making it seem even more expansive. Maybe I’m off on that. Thoughts?

Did people really have to come around to liking this one?? It's not like it's "Balance" or something.
I'm with you and Scruffy from your chat: 5 stars from the first listen. I like that it's structured slightly differently than most Band-Maid songs, starting with verse/mini-solo/verse/chorus.
And the delay before the first chorus! You think it's coming but before it hits you get: "itsuwari ka (shinjitsu ka) dō ka up to you" and Kanami's guitar *rising* into the chorus. Literal perfection.
I hope they do more of that in the future. And experiment with their sound like in "Balance". I think fans are ready for it. (Reposted from your livestream video.)

I loved it the first time i heard it too. As often happens with those pesky Maids some of their best songs never get their own release or are their Killer B's. "Youth" didn't even make the digital release of "Unseen World" & was only available on the limited edition first press :)
