Fergus Slattery is one of the greatest Flankers in History, and David Duckham never gets the recognition he deserves because he played in such a poor England team. If he had played for the AB's or Wales in that period he would be considered one of the all time greats. His performances for the BABA's and Lions showed his true brilliance.
Duckham is one of the all time greats...his performances for the Lions and the Barbarians cemented his status....as for Slattery...he was in the 70's what Richie McCaw, David Pocock or Schalk Burger have been in recent years and what Michael Jones was in the 80's and 90's... He was concrete hard...and one of very few in the Northern Hemisphere that even today wouldn't look out of place in a Super 14 squad...he had the physicality and intensity...
Rampage Clover I agree.. I still don't think many people realise how good Duckham was.. Many don't even know his name, and I was on one channel where half the idiots didn't even know who Mike Gibson was.. Probably the best all round player in history, as said by Bill MClaren, Colin Meads, Gareth Edwards and Phil Bennett..
The Welsh called him Dai Duckham........because he played like a Welshman. We applauded him at Murrayfield, when he stood out from England’s pedestrian side. Big chap but it was his elusive running that was great to watch. Slattery was a whirling dervish that had a huge motor. He would be a mega star in today’s game.......Irish fans told me that he was going to snaffle up a young Andy Irvine. He snaffled everybody else but Irvine was a speed merchant too far.
@@tollyt7465 Mike Gibson could play anywhere...fullback, wing centre, stand off and boy, could he tackle . He had the lot with the shrewdest of rugby brains.
Oh yes. The frightening thing from a long standing Springbok supporter was just how many first chouce players did not come to South Africa with the 1974 Lions team - Duckham, Mike Gibson, Gerald Davies, Dawes. (Many were teachers who were not given permission by Dept of Education to travel to RSA!). Phil Bennet was the 3rd choice fly half when the team was originally selected. I saw the 74 Lions play twice. One of the highlights of my rugby life.
Fergus Slatterys performances on the Lions unbeaten tour of SA in 1974 were the best of his career. This match showed why he was so good.
One of the greats to play wing foward,I think he was man of the match that day,he was everywhere and involved in nearly every try.

Oh yes. Gibson. Pure class and vision

Dukhams break and step. What a player he was!

@William Wallace: That's why the Welsh liked to call him ''Dai'' !!
Amazing.
Wasn't it beautiful?
Much rather watch this rugby than the stuff we get now
Ok fugus he is my nans cousin
Agreed
0:28 The cameraman buys Duckham's dummy!
Philip Raiswell yep!...it was THAT good
When British rugby genuinely and most emphatically ruled the world in skill, inventiveness, guile and downright magnificence.
Everyone talks about Phil Bennett's dummy but that electrifying run by Dai Duckham and 2 dummies were unreal
Que triste que la primera jugada tuvo un forward pass. Hubiera sido tremendo try de equipo!!
Duckham sends the cameraman in the wrong direction!
Amazing rugby. Was it forward?
Well ,goodness me, wasn't DD something special ?
