The Intercostal Muscle Trigger Points

  • The intercostal muscles provide about 25% of the total force of breathing, and may help stabilize the chest wall
The intercostals are three layers of muscles that pass between the ribs. Each external outer layer intercostal attaches to the lower border of one rib, and, on a diagonal line, to the upper border of the rib below.
The lowest intercostals merge with the external oblique muscles. The internal intercostals connect each rib from the cartilage to the upper border of the rib below it. There is also a deeper, innermost intercostal layer.
The intercostal nerve runs between it and the more superficial internal intercostal, and trigger points in the areas along the nerve can entrap that nerve.
The intercostals draw the central tendon of the diaphragm downward during respiration. The health of these muscles can profoundly alter the acid/ base balance of the body. Shortening of the intercostals affects the kinetic front chain along the lateral line.

@@theknown1741 havent logged into this account in a while sorry guys but how i did it was flexing them if youre not used to it doing so will be hard so i say to practice breathing deep with your chest and belly to force them to expand and when you get more used to it youll get the mind muscle connection to flex them at will forcing your ribs out

I’m sorry, but this is not a tiny spot of pain. This is insanely painful so painful it’s freaking debilitating. I can’t even breathe when it actually occurs.

I've had this pain in my right chest feels like the actual lung but I work in an industrial environment and I lifted a box of bolts that was pretty heavy like a dummy and i never bent my legs and my body was kinda twisted when I lifted it so idk I went to the doctor and he said my heart was was ok and my blood pressure was perfectly fine and he said that I strained a muscle in my right chest I didn't even know this can happen but it goes away when I take medication and when I move around it hurts and or if I breathe deeply and it does feel sharp but it's been hurting now for a solid whole week any thoughts ? If this could be it

I had pain around my ribs around 2 years, which was a type that used to dissappear whenever I touched on it but would return and would also return after any sort of stretch exercise. Also I noticed that the pain was moving in the sense it would appear at one spot and then somewhere else around the same lower rib cage area..
Will moving cup massage help for this?

@@user-ps7we2ww6f hi, actually that problem resolved after I had taken medicines from Ayurveda for vata disorder.. vata in Ayurveda means excess air .. so their understanding is when air gets excess i.e. (gas which does not go out) will circulate in your body and get trapped in places where you might have had injury in the past..
So that disappeared for me after couple years I had it , after those medicines for gas, .. strange
But for you it can be this or something else .. you can also get checked with a good traditional Chinese medicine doctor (or any traditional Ayurvedic doctor) even they are good with their understanding

No. I think i have this cause i did check in 3 diferents doctor and my heart is 100% ok! All of them showed the sames result. So i think that is this. Its not a pain, its like little sharps / muscles strains that goes away like 2 seconds or something!
But dont worry, this doesnt kill you ahahah, but its annoying

For anyone asking how you treat these muscles, youre best bet to to get a spongy foamy like massage ball and place it on a wall and lean into it.
The other method is dry needling which is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS for this area
Still in the worlds of Dommerholt, " there is not dangerous muscle to needle, only a dangerous clinician"

    • @Nielasher
