Nobody seemed to get the significance of the baseball sequence; they seemed to be watching the action or just talking over the speaking. On the record, of course, all you could hear was the speaking. It was by Phil Rizzuto, an All Star player for the NY Yankees. He won seven World Series. After retiring from baseball, Rizzuto famously broadcast Yankee games on radio and television for the next 40 years. His popular catchphrase was "Holy cow." In the song, Meat Loaf says, “We’re going to all the way tonight tonight, we’re going to go all the way tonight.” At least in the 50s, a guy tried to get to first base (kissing), then second base (boobs), then third base (fingering), and then “go all the way” home. Yup, this is Karla DeVito, who toured with the Loaf, but she is lip-synching to Foley's recorded vocals (and Meat Loaf is lip-synching to his own vocals) just for the official music video here
Technically, neither Meatloaf nor Karla are “lip synching”, which is where you intentionally move your mouth to match an audio (& is how most videos are made). Both are singing their hearts out. It’s just that the audio from the live performance wasn’t used for the video. Ellen Foley did the album vocals (released Oct. 1977), but couldn’t do the tour (1977-78). Karla DeVito did the tour. When MTV came along (Aug. 1981), you Had to have a video, or your song wouldn’t get played on that massively popular format. It was common to create videos for “pre-video” songs, by taking studio audio & synching it to video of a prior performance. Credit for how well the Bat Out Of Hell videos are synched goes to the technicians, who had to carefully select shots & painstakingly speed up or slow down the visual, to match the live movements to the studio vocals. They did a far better job than most.

Growing up in Philly each crowd ( what you guys call a crew) had their own corners we hung on. The guys hated when us girls would break out and do this song. We knew it from start to finish. And we sung the whole thing We even did the baseball part.

They actually adlib arguments at the end of the song, which always had me laughing. Meat Loaf said in an interview that he got the name "Meat" from his dad because he was red like raw meat when he was born. Later, in school, he stepped on a guy's foot and his coach called him a loaf. The nickname stuck from there.

This wasn't a live performance and the female singer in the video is Karla DeVito who is miming to Ellen Foley's vocals. DeVito toured and performed the song live with Meatloaf for many years. If you think the video version is theatrical, you should check out some of the live performances which could stretch to over 20 minutes in length! I must have seen Meat in concert nearly 100 times and it never got old!
Meat Loaf got his start in musical theatre, and kept that vibe in his live performances. That's why everything is so over the top. He played Eddie in The Rocky Horror Picture Show too.
On the Broadway show he even played Eddie AND Dr. Everett Scott. There are still audio recordings out there, but sadly no videos. I would have loved seeing him on a Broadway stage.

Back in like 93- (I was 13) my parents took me to see Meatloaf bc I LOVED this song & then got really into all his music- but yes this song is historical- it was great to see you laughing like that!! Your reaction was perfect!! ❤️
Growing up in Philly each crowd ( what you guys call a crew) had their own corners we hung on.
The guys hated when us girls would break out and do this song. We knew it from start to finish. And we sung the whole thing

This is by far his most hilarious song/video. If you watch his concert footage of this song with Patti Russo it is even funnier. They actually adlib arguments at the end of the song, which always had me laughing.
Meat Loaf said in an interview that he got the name "Meat" from his dad because he was red like raw meat when he was born. Later, in school, he stepped on a guy's foot and his coach called him a loaf. The nickname stuck from there.

This wasn't a live performance and the female singer in the video is Karla DeVito who is miming to Ellen Foley's vocals. DeVito toured and performed the song live with Meatloaf for many years. If you think the video version is theatrical, you should check out some of the live performances which could stretch to over 20 minutes in length! I must have seen Meat in concert nearly 100 times and it never got old!

Meat Loaf got his start in musical theatre, and kept that vibe in his live performances. That's why everything is so over the top. He played Eddie in The Rocky Horror Picture Show too.
On the Broadway show he even played Eddie AND Dr. Everett Scott. There are still audio recordings out there, but sadly no videos. I would have loved seeing him on a Broadway stage.
