    Meat Loaf told a story about this song.... his daughter came home from school (most likely Jr. High) and told him that they played this song in Sex Ed as an example of what could happen... he did not know if he should be worried... or proud....

      GREAT STORY!!
      Years ago, I had a co-worker with a teenage son who had his first serious girlfriend. The son was a good student, headed to college and a career as a lawyer, doctor, MBA, or similar. The girlfriend wanted them to drop out of high school, run away and get married, and get whatever jobs they could get to survive. And the son was considering it.
      So I made a copy of "Paradise" and gave it to my coworker. Told him to make his son listen to it, no matter what. He had never heard of it, so I watched while he listened to it for the first time. His reactions will live with me forever.
      He made his son listen to it - and the son and girlfriend broke up soon after. He's a successful lawyer with a wife and kids now.
      Meat Loaf saved a young man's future in 8 minutes. RIP and THANK YOU.

Also, at MANY theaters around the country when RHPS gained cult status, they'd play Paradise By the Dashboard Light as one of the preamble lead-in videos to each showing. This song perfectly captures the teen experience. All hormones for the guy and a girl who confuses love and lust. Then when they both get what they think they want….well, reality hits. And the end when they look back and remember how it was “so much better than it is today”

    • @mustangmikep51
      @mustangmikep51 4 місяці тому

      funny that when you get what you wanted and are "satisfied", then your ready to kick your partner out of the car/bed whatever....your senses can never give you complete satisfaction...only a brief taste...they can never be fully satsified...as the Stones said many, many years ago "I can't get no SATISFACTION"

    • @pennyanderson3475
      @pennyanderson3475 4 місяці тому

      They got what they thought they wanted. In reality the girl pressed for a promise of forever by using sex. The boy lies and gives in to get what he wants. Unfortunately that kind of behavior isn't limited to the young but it is perfectly captured in steinman's lyrics.

    I saw Meat Loaf in 1994 at Wembley Arena, London - I'd only heard Meat Loaf by CD prior to seeing him live and didn't realise what I was missing. I was sitting front row he opened with the stage blacked out with just his voice to "I'll Do Anything For Love" and as soon as he belted out the first few words, the lights beamed on him sitting at the piano and anyone who's ever seen Meat Loaf live will tell you just how booming and powerful his voice is - truly magical unlike any other voice you've ever heard something the recorded media just can't recreate.

    This is such a lovely and beautiful tribute.
    I was 13 years old, back in 1978 when this song was a number 1 hit here in the Netherlands and as a 13 year old, I was screaming this song around the house (farm). What did I know what this song is about? I didn't speak any English at that time. It was the music, the atmosphere. What did I know about 2 16 year olds having their "exitment" on the bench of a car, but I loved the song, I loved the music. It turned out that Bat out off Hell was the first ever album I owned. i wanted it so bad and got it for my birthday.
    It is often said, the music you love on your 13th will be important for your music choice later in live, so in that way, it isn't strange that I'm a huge Nightwishfan, now I'm 56. Thank you so much for this.
    The song was written by Jim Steinman, who did also write songs for Ellen Foley and Bonnie Tyler, who also had top10 hits in the Netherlands. Paradise by the Dashboardlight is originally sung by Meatloaf (Lee Marvin Aday) and Ellen Foley, but in the clip ip and also in live performances, you see Carla Devito. Carla can sing well, but doesn't have the exellent voice of Ellen Foley. Both, Meatloaf and Carla are also actors. You can see that in the perfect way they act this song in the videoclip.
    Thank you so much for reacting to the song, that turned out to be hugely important in my music taste for the rest of my life.

    It's about two 17-year-olds who are making out in a parked car by the lake ('glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife' = they are working up a sweat). She demands he marry her before she goes all the way with him. They go back and forth (he says he will tell her in the morning if he loves her, after the act is done) but she holds out and he gives in to her demands. It jumps to years later when they regret their youthful impulsiveness. You can tell Meat Loaf had a theatrical background! He was very good at putting on a show! He was also in a lot of movies: Fight Club, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Wayne's World, Roadie, etc.)

He put the same energy into the show regardless of the size of the crowd. The small club show was only supposed to be 90 minutes. When the show was supposed to end, he looked at the owner and said 'I hope you are up for a late night'. He sang all of Bat Out of Hell in order. The only rock performer that was his equal was Freddie Mercury. They both put their all into the stage performance. RIP to a legend

    In the 60's and 70's, my era, making out in the front seat of a car was a right of passage for most teenagers. Front seat until things got steamy then back seat to consummate the union. As for Paradise by the Dash Board light that is all you could see when parked in a dark spot and the only lights were those of the instruments on the dash of the car that illuminated you and the object of your desire. Many a child was conceived that way and many like myself found out 5 decades later that they had a child from one of those episodes who they had never met. Takes me back years and his songs left a lasting impression on most of the youth of those days.

    Whenever this was played at a wedding reception, my wife and I would act it out (sans the racier physical bits, kids around you know) and usually ended up clearing the dance floor. We have so many happy memories of just letting go to the moment and having a hell of a good time. Jim Steinman was born to write these songs and Meat Loaf was born to sing them. RIP Jim, Meat Loaf, and Phil.

    Meatloaf, according to his own words, was an actor first. He loved playing different characters. He loved getting into the mind of each character he played, picking them apart, seeing what made them tick, then giving them to people. The music was almost a side effect of those characters, and you can see that in each of the performances he gives. Maggie, you said that this performance was SO different from " I Would Do Anything For Love ", and you're right, it is. The difference is that they are two different, distinct characters who are singing those songs. That is why we get the different styles, the very different vocals, and a different feel in each of them. Are there similarities? Sure. It's performed by the same person, regardless of him playing different people very well, but there are still major, noticeable differences in the characters. And that is what set Meatloaf apart from other musicians, both of his own era and today, IMO.
    Oh, btw, which I'm sure you've heard by now, the recording of this was absolute crap. The video portion of it, at least. Audio was fine, which is what kept me watching. I think that you're running out of storage space on your hard drive and that's causing issues with your recordings. I could be wrong, of course. It's been known to happen.

    Loved your reaction to this great song and even greater performance! Meatloaf would always be sure to express how much he appreciated his fans and, as you can see, ALWAYS gave a great performance. I think this song & video really showcases the performance aspect. The back and forth with the female voice, as well as the repeating chorus lines, makes makes this feel almost like a Broadway musical

    Keep in mind, this was released late-70s, but the story begins in the late-50s as a pair of teenagers park by the lake for their First Time together. The girl stops him to make her demand, he wants to 'finish' and get back to her with the answer, but she insists he make a decision. He's so caught up in his hormones that he finally relents and agrees. Transition then to the late-70s again as the unhappily married couple they became, with them "praying for the end of time".
    There is SO much cultural shift in this song, it's hard for post-boomers to grasp what's going on. Using baseball to distract in order to delay male orgasm, the problem of girls getting a 'reputation', etc.

    • @paulgoffin8054
      @paulgoffin8054 2 роки тому +7

      Baseball to delay orgasm?
      Surely it's all about him "getting to first base".. then second base..
      And just as he's about to "get home", she says to "stop right there!"

    You can’t mention Meatloaf’s music without mentioning Jim Steinman, who was the composer, musical partner, etc. of Meatloaf.
    Sadly, Jim passed away last Spring, Meat & Jim were born a little over a month apart & passed away 9 months apart.
    What a brilliant musical partnership, that really brought Musical Theater mixed with Rock & Roll to a mass audience.

    He sang in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. There was a section they said nobody could get all those words they had written in. He said "I can" and did. He appeared in the Broadway musicals "Hair", "Rockabye Hamlet" and "The Rocky Horror Show," and Off Broadway in "Rainbow", "More Than You Deserve", "National Lampoon Show" and the New York Shakespeare Festival's production of "As You Like it;" as well as other productions . He was once turned down for a role and had his agent call them because he was sure a mistake had been made

  • @zooks527
    @zooks527 2 роки тому +4

    It's not really fair to say they're "lip-synching". The video is from one of the stage performances following the release of the album and features Karla Devito. Both of them were actually singing on stage during the tour, not synching to a recording. They took the stage video and synched it to the album recording for the video (which features Ellen Foley's voice), which is why it's such a good visual match.
