My father made a tape when Saga was on the radio in The Netherlands. Must have been around this time. He soon came asking me where his tape went; I had taken it and played it over and over again. Such a perfect balance between sound and emotion. I love it! Thank you!!!
That is nearly 100% this concert, as it was broadcasted through Eurovision (TV and FM) in whole europe, at least in Switzerland too. I tapped foreigner and Sage onto a 120min tape (sadly the tape is rottentrash)
I watched this concert in TV in Hamburg. It was something new in that time...electronic drums...(I hate this sound now but in 1981...) . Thanks for downloading it .I had this concert on compact cassette recorded from borrowed vinyl. I was looking for this live album on vinyl or CD for long time. Unfortunately Saga, Rush is not known in Australia where I live... I have no idea how can it be possible ,but it is...
How this has only 70k views in about 2 1/2 years is astounding to me. Epic band and recording of a magnificent performance! Besides, this is serious business here!!! BOB!!!!
Damn. So this is kinda like the video version of "In Transit" ? I'd pay good money to have this on a regular DVD. I think what makes Saga's music so special is their sense of space between the notes. They all play like funk musicians, giving space to each other, there's no "wall of sound" yet it sounds so powerful. One of the best bands in the world, no question about that.
At least the "Dont be late" song is up there in composing and arranging with Andrew Lloyd Webber (UK). Saga did not use him but went for Rupert Hine (UK) on Worlds Apart album. Rupert Hine is Moog Synth master and produced no less than 160 albums for very successful artists.
I have been a Saga fan since I first saw them at my high school in Toronto, Nov 24, 1978 the day I turned 18 and legal to drink. I loved the show so much we saw them the next night at the Gasworks. It was kind of sad saying goodbye at the 40Th anniversary final show at the Phoenix.
Love the black Les Paul with the white P 90's! Always been a LP fan and an immediate fan of Ian at my first introduction to him, what a great player, he's been an influence and inspiration, thank you Canada, for yet another great band of talented musicians!!
SUPER QUALITY video! Thank you for sharing this. I have been listening to Saga since 1982 and up until now I am still very into Saga. I know Saga didn't get better recognition that they truly deserved, but that is okay, for those who do not know or ever heard of Saga, it is a loss for them. Saga remains one of the greatest bands ever.
I remember that the French liquor producer Cointreau organized concerts in Belgium in the 1980's. They ran ads in weekly magazines such as Humo. And one of the bands that were involved in those Cointreau sponsored concerts was this great Canadian band that goes by the name of Saga. And on the Luxembourg radio program Wango Tango, they ran a show called 'The saga of..." They made episodes about Toto, Chicago etc. In the opening tune they also always promised to do a "Saga of Saga" one day. They kept their promise, and the rest is history, because this was the channel through which I got acquinted with the band. That was around 1983 or so. I was immediately sold ! While all the other highschool students were infatuated with U2 or Simple Minds, I wanted a melodic band with lots of breathtaking guitar solo's etc. and a singer who didn't think he was some kind of Messiah on stage. Saga, Genesis, Rainbow etc. offered all that.....
My first concert as a 14 year old was Saga with another great and underrated Canadian band FM in San Juan, Puerto Rico. What a great show! This show is more or less from that time. I believe I saw this Dortmund show on MTV or Night Flight back in the day. Saga rules!
I agree that FM was very ubder-rated! Black Noise was absolutely epic! Saw them in the round at Ontario Place Forum and they blew me away. Couldn't understand why these two bands got so overlooked. All of us Canucks should be proud.
Images at Twilight was the very first CD I bought when they first came out back in the mid 80's. Saga is a band that was way ahead of the curve. Great show at Massey Hall in 1982. Hey... a Wal bass. Don't see many of those. Worth a pretty penny now.
Ultimate Basses - I was at that Massey Hall show ... it was in Nov 1981 and a very young Bryan Adams opened. Thought he'd get eaten alive by the SAGA crowd but he did pretty well and everyone was rocking pretty good with him. A testament to the cool, open-minded SAGA fans. They're so amazing ... so sad they have always been so over-looked in Canada, but kudos to the Germans for appreciating them so much!
Maybe I got the date mixed up. Not sure about seeing BA tho. Look how well Bryan has done, eh? One thing I remember about the show is Ian flubbing a guitar part. He laughed and joined in flawlessly a few seconds later.
I literally copied this performance (living in Stavanger at the time) onto cassette by putting the recorder next to the TV speaker while the VHS tape my friend made of the TV broadcast played- watched the "bootleg" video dozens of times, listened to my "bootleg" recording many more times since. Still gives me goosebumps...
I remember seeing Don't Be Late on MTV late at night and I was hooked. Could not find their vinyl right away at the local record store in the import section . But eventually I did and have been a fan ever since. That was probably about '81.🤘
Very nice to see the concert again. Thank you for that. But there is a small mistake. The concert was on Friday 18 December 1981. I was there live and my ticket still exists. Best regards from the Ruhr area.
I recall attending my first Kim Mitchell concert on Rideau Street in the 90s. They finished without an encore because, as Kim explained it, Chris Sutherland had to return to Toronto for the birth of his kid, and, then join Saga on tour to fill in for their drummer, who had had a heart attack. I was taken to see their act in Ottawa a few years later (as a Christmas present from Selena 💕). The singer had returned after taking a few years to help raise, and be with his kids. He was shaved all over. The band was in great shape, and sounding as fresh as ever.
Saga was a great band back then. I think they were bigger overseas? Unfortunately here, in their time period they were up against VanHalen, ZZ Top, Journey etc. Sadly for some in the USA, too complicated to get it. Only musicians understood how good these guys were.

@@progmeup Okay, wieder was gelernt, Danke für die Erläuterungen. 👍
🎸🙋♀️Ich stimme zu!
Die knackigen Simmons wahren für mich schon immer Markenzeichen..
A great band!! I can not understand why they don´t have more followers. Such a fantastic band
RUSH AND TRIUMPH STOLE THE SPOTLIGHT??
Incredible how well they played live by this point. Also mastering keyboards live wasn't as easy as using plugins from computers. Well, it sounded better than what you get from modeled synths so worth all the trouble!
And they are still incredible, and still the same strong voice! Check for the live bits from Koblenz in June 2023! Amazing, THANKS, SAGA!
The century-band. What for a kind of sound, what for a drive, what for a sound - i like this band from the late 70th. Phantastic.
SO awesome and talented musicians ! i hardly find such talents in today's music
oooh listen to Kyros, Steven Wilson, there is so much talent now…
Michael Sadler, Steve Negus, Ian Crichton... Three of my favourite musicians...
Ich hatte die Freude, dabei zu sein! Magisch!
Erst 1997 mein erstes Konzert...
Real musicians, brilliant songs ... there is no such thing today really sad anymore
Doch, du musst nur richtig suchen!
Тащусь от SAGA с 198..года
Необыкновенно оригинальный стиль их музыки.
Я же из армии вернулся!!!
Нервы и мозговые извилины... Ого Лены!!!
Gibson Les Paul P90 in a good hand. Nothing compares. Best sound ever!
Yep .
I am a fan since then...Saw them more than a dozen times since them...they are still alive and worth a visit! 5 Gigs in Germany in 2019, go for it!
"On the loose" really has a lot in common with "You're not alone" definitely a Saga sound there.
Saga was such a great band, just listen to them live. great recording, they should have been HUGE.
Yeah!
Is!
okay you right@@johnambaum2310
Thank you for sharing this video. I was 19 and enjoyed the concert. It was the first time I saw Saga live and I'm still a fan today.
One of my very first albums, Worlds Apart in the US 1981. Wind him up, then No Stranger was awesome here 💪
I always loved Ian's guitar sound and tone. So cool
I was fortunate to see this awesome band open for pat benatar when I was in 8th grade(my first real concert and was amazed at them and picked up guitar because of this guys cool guitar sound) was a rock fan forever after that! sweet memories thanks for the upload words can't express enough how great this band was!
Reminds me of my childhood. Had this recording on tape and heard it for years and years! Thank you so much for bringing back old (ooooold) memories. Really loved this band and have seen them several times live over the years. When I remember right, it was from "Rockpalast" with Foreigner and the unforgettable Meat Loaf on stage. Thumbs up for perfect audio and video quality of this upload!!!
als es noch vernünftigen, guten Rockpalst gab... Es waren wunderbare Parties!
"Humble Stance", is still 1 of my Top 3 songs, from Saga!!!!
A legend band, nothing more to say.
i follow you since 1979. you are incredible musicians! thank you for your outstanding music!
My first introduction to Saga seeing this live on German TV in 1981. Big fan ever since and still are. Saw the Heads or tales tour in Amsterdam soon after this, what a great show and album!! Still love to see this, had it on audio tape and played that tape grey! Thanks for uploading this
SAGA,It is my favorite rockband alltime.I love them for about 36 years.
I am a Saga Fan since 1983, when I was at my first Saga concert . Heads or Tales Tour in Würzburg/Germany with the famous video wall. Brilliant concert.
@@ralfwegmann684 My first concert was in 1990 in Den Haag NL. I was listening to the liveLP: In Transit and I thought this my music that I love and still my favorite album alltime.
@@edkester9530 saw them this year in march in Stuttgart. Out of the shadows tour. Again brilliant.
Was my 18th Saga concert.
Since 1978... You're Not Alone
saw them in 1982 in Heidelberg - and moved to their hometown of Toronto 8 years later (but not because of Saga :) Und ja, Gottschalk its grottenschlecht in diesem Interview
michaelreqd und seine Hose.... oh man
Thank you so much for sharing, so many memories!!! I wish they would do an US tour :(
too see a live version of no stranger does it all for me..!! many thanks
Saga fan since 1979.
Thanks for reminding me how great Saga were. Next stop, pulling out my old records for a Saga play-a-thon.👍👍
I love this band ❤️😀🇮🇩
BOB!!!!
One of the first Canadian band to embrace Digital recording
Yep, it’s all about economy: knowing which notes to play, which ones not to play, and at what points silence should be allowed to do its part.
It's funny how the host laughs at the thought of Germans understanding Saga lyrics, when he a is bi-lingual German.
Thank you.This is so great.
I've loved you from the 1st time I heard you on the radio!!!!
❤❤ And I will Always Love you 😍 ❤️ 🎉😊
But that was Witney Houston!
Best part they are still playing in 2024. Same energy!
Yep this is saga always the best live!!!! Realy goos bumps
Love the black Les Paul with the white P 90's! Always been a LP fan and an immediate fan of Ian at my first introduction to him, what a great player, he's been an influence and inspiration, thank you Canada, for yet another great band of talented musicians!!
Still remember how impressed l was that night in 81. A great band indeed. 👍 Used a black Les Paul Custom myself back then. Best guitar l ever owned.
They also play "Wind Him Up" after "Time's Up". Thanks for the upload! Great footage!
+panurge987 Thanks, I added it in the description.
Amazing band then, still amazing after all these years! Thanks for sharing!
This is the highest quality video version I have ever seen of this concert. How on earth did you get a hold of this! 8-O
And a huge THANK U TO BOOT. 😃👍
At the time, pretty much entire Europe used the PAL (or SECAM) TV system which sounded just as good as an FM radio!
@@bigls6254 I saw them open for Max Webster on New Year's, I believe 1980 at Maple Leaf Gardens. Awesome show. Webster was off the hook as well.
Saga waren eine Macht. Was für ein Spektakel! Und die Leute haben geklatscht statt mit dem Handy gefilmt
SAGA performed many times in Denmark - Great band with god songs and great musicians. Lot of energy
The band was in great shape, and sounding as fresh as ever.
my first ever live concert. After that briefcase Drumsolo at 18:30 I had to buy a Simmons Drumset myself :-)
Saga was a great band back then. I think they were bigger overseas? Unfortunately here, in their time period they were up against VanHalen, ZZ Top, Journey etc.
Sadly for some in the USA, too complicated to get it. Only musicians understood how good these guys were.
