I’m ICAR certified in color theory, fabrication, and application of paint. I worked for a collision center for almost 20 years, and yes matte paint does have a clear coat on it. It’s a matte clear. No vehicle is riding around with just base on it from the factory and a lot of companies have gone to a single stage urethane.

@@freannde all cars have a clear on it, weather it is shiny or matte. The only cars that do not have clear on it are those that are painted with a single stage paint called urethane. This type of paint which is basically a cheap quick paint is the upgrade from enamel. Most places use this on colors without metallics because it’s cheap and very quick if you’re using it in a production shop.

Matte paint is just a matte clear coat. Same clear coat, just has an additive to diffuse the light depending on how much of a shine you want. There are several cars I have to repaint with either matte, semi gloss or eggshell sheen. It is true though, it’s much more difficult to maintain. You cannot buff it or it’ll be glossy. Which also means it’s even more difficult to spray, zero room for error. If there’s a defect you can’t simply buff it out, it’s a sand and respray

Certified collision tech here. It’s in no way impossible to fix a flaw in a matte paint job. It’s just a colossal pain in the ass depending on the extent of the damage. This is because when you mess up one spot of the paint job, you have to go back over much more than just that one spot. It’s better to go with an expensive gloss finish than a matte finish if you want to keep your car pristine.
Imagine paying extra for the factory matte paint and then paying thousands more to cover it up with matte paint protector that last only a few years. 😂
Best solution is to get a car that was properly finished being painted with a clear coat instead of looking like it was spray can pained with primer for a finishing touch
And most importantly they dont tell u that u need to replace the ppf every 3 years and also has the potential of ur paint coming off when they take off the film.
You don’t need to replace Ppf. Removed correctly it doesn’t damage your paint. See Winguard Paint Protection Specialists for a better understanding of how PPF works.

That's what everyone says now, but in 2010 when the first matte paint finishes were released everybody hated it; they thought it was an unfinished paint job.
My dad used to own many car dealerships and used to work on cars too at his dealership. He said the most, almost impossible thing is to match a chrome color car and or fix a chip in it because chrome goes in so many different ways and it complicated to find the flow of it. Most of the time he would just re-do the whole wrap just to save time.
As an owner of 2 cars with a magno paint job I agree with going with xpel stealth As since there’s no clear coat you cannot buff out scratches and will need to repaint
Not sure how you’ve removed it but there is NO damage to the paint IF you ever wanted to take PPF off your car - providing you have used a licensed installer with a top class film (Xpel have the best)
As a professional painter I can tell a lot of commenters don’t know what they are talking about. Everything he said is 100 percent true. Most matte paint jobs are SS meaning no clear and yes you can clear a matte paint with an additive in the clear to prevent glossing but most don’t and you still can’t fix scratches etc… due to being matte l. You can’t buff them and one other thing is if you wash them and don’t completely dry them it’s a pain to remove the water spots left behind due to having to find a decent product that you don’t have to buff with. All in all nothing he said was wrong.
I still wish I woulda became an Avery Denison certified wrapper when I was 19. I’m 33 now and work in telecommunications and still think graphics woulda made me more money and would have been funner, especially with wraps really taking off in the last 5 years

I paint controllers professionally. All the controllers i do use matte paint, and yes they do have a matte clear coat. It can be sanded and have matte clear coat reapplied.
Dont forget the windshield gets chipped too over. Maybe u should put protective film over that too. U can also put protective film on ur face to protect it from getting damaged.
Matt paint was actually a mistake that one person actually said he wanted to order his car with primer only because he was doing some sort of custom paint job. Another client saw it and said he liked how it looked and wanted to order his car the same way. But he wasn't going to paint over the primer. So, the factory came up with the mat paint process. To me, it is not that nice, but I'm a former Auto Body Technician and I absolutely love a deep, glossy paint and clear coat.
Mate paint does have a clear coat but it does make it a lot harder to fix unlike gloss you can't buff it at all preventing you from doing standard repairs that don't require a repaint you also can't do a touch up either because it'll be shinny while the rest is mate so basically the only way to fix scratches or chips you have to repaint it but to be fair most times on gloss you still have to repaint to fix it as well

Lotus offered a matte black at one point in time. It looked really good, but unlike their other colors. It came with no warranty whatsoever. I say a new car the other day with matte paint and it had giant stickers on both front windows saying how delicate it was and that you had to be careful.
I wanted to matte paing my car a while back and went to a high end specialized shop and asked about doing it matte to avoid the nonsene of my clear coats constantly suffering. They cleared my confussion that the clear coats were suffering the damage so that the actual paint didn't. With the matte paint, every little problem would be a disaster and could not be easily fixed like buffing out. So i gave up on the matte paint. Sad to hear how mucxh worse when at first glance matte would appear to be better.
Whats impossible is for an automotive paint not to have a clearcoat. Flat, matte, low gloss, high gloss and more clear coats are available and absolutely necessary for any automotive finish. Even single stage paint has a clearcoat mixed into it
I work at a Volkswagen in Germany as a Vehicle painter and it's honestly sad how much misinformation is spread. Here we have a system that you learn a job for 3 years kind of like a 3 year Internship where I get paid (Less then a normal worker) but also have benefits like the company is not allowed to pressure me into making profit. My existence there is not there for profit. My purpose is to learn so I can professionally work as a vehicle painter. They can obviously tell me if I'm being inefficient with my work but not pressure me or fire me because of it. I also have to visit a specific school that teaches me a lot about the chemicals and materials used and explain to me why things are the way they are. The purpose of this is to make new good workers that know Thier job and Thier materials so we are able to work professionally. The fact that even I know better with barely experience is kind of sad. People are not even trying to make something believable anymore. (Also there is this car wrap chanel on UA-cam that's always like "exclusive wrap if I mess this up that's 400$ down the drain". Those are also fake. Expensive wraps are made from a special material that goes back to it's original state of you heat it up with a heat gun. The only way to actually ruin it is to ripp it apart but that takes a lot of force)
The most valuable thing after this paint protection job is the film on the car body. The car will degrade way more rapidly before the film paint protection degrades.
Yep, my mom had a Mercedes, it was on the “low end” and still was extremely expensive and took a lot of maintenance. They now make Mercedes that have pre-paid maintenance packages as well as extending warranties. It’s an insanely expensive car, and has the most expensive maintenance. It’s almost like a “scam” but people willingly choose to buy into for the prestige. If you ask me, there are a lot more worthwhile things that you can do with your money, if you even have that much to begin with. 😮💨
Now that’s the biggest bs I’ve ever heard as a car painter. Matte paint that’s also metallic comes WITH clearcoat 9.8/10 times. Non metallic paint too. Also extremely experienced polishers can indeed buff out imperfections, but it’s pretty difficult to get it matching.
Matte paint jobs are clear coat. The clear is just a matted finish, like how you can get house paint in gloss, eggshell, satin, matte. Same applies for automotive paints.
Mercedes Matte colors have a soft Matte-effect finish instead of traditional gloss . The Matte effect is entirely in the Clearcoat. The other paint layers are identical to traditional gloss finish. Source: Recently purchased a 2023 AMG with Matte Black and this is in one of my booklets.

I have Designo Magno Platinum Mercedes Benz, and yes, it does have a clear coat. The paint would not last very long without a clear coat.

Matt paint was actually a mistake that one person actually said he wanted to order his car with primer only because he was doing some sort of custom paint job. Another client saw it and said he liked how it looked and wanted to order his car the same way. But he wasn't going to paint over the primer. So, the factory came up with the mat paint process. To me, it is not that nice, but I'm a former Auto Body Technician and I absolutely love a deep, glossy paint and clear coat.
Mate paint does have a clear coat but it does make it a lot harder to fix unlike gloss you can't buff it at all preventing you from doing standard repairs that don't require a repaint you also can't do a touch up either because it'll be shinny while the rest is mate so basically the only way to fix scratches or chips you have to repaint it but to be fair most times on gloss you still have to repaint to fix it as well

Lotus offered a matte black at one point in time. It looked really good, but unlike their other colors. It came with no warranty whatsoever. I say a new car the other day with matte paint and it had giant stickers on both front windows saying how delicate it was and that you had to be careful.

I wanted to matte paing my car a while back and went to a high end specialized shop and asked about doing it matte to avoid the nonsene of my clear coats constantly suffering.
They cleared my confussion that the clear coats were suffering the damage so that the actual paint didn't.
With the matte paint, every little problem would be a disaster and could not be easily fixed like buffing out.
So i gave up on the matte paint. Sad to hear how mucxh worse when at first glance matte would appear to be better.
My son gets upset every week when he is lovingly washing his matte black Mercedes. It is funny as heck.
Whats impossible is for an automotive paint not to have a clearcoat. Flat, matte, low gloss, high gloss and more clear coats are available and absolutely necessary for any automotive finish. Even single stage paint has a clearcoat mixed into it
I work at a Volkswagen in Germany as a Vehicle painter and it's honestly sad how much misinformation is spread.
Here we have a system that you learn a job for 3 years kind of like a 3 year Internship where I get paid (Less then a normal worker) but also have benefits like the company is not allowed to pressure me into making profit. My existence there is not there for profit. My purpose is to learn so I can professionally work as a vehicle painter. They can obviously tell me if I'm being inefficient with my work but not pressure me or fire me because of it. I also have to visit a specific school that teaches me a lot about the chemicals and materials used and explain to me why things are the way they are.
The purpose of this is to make new good workers that know Thier job and Thier materials so we are able to work professionally.
The fact that even I know better with barely experience is kind of sad. People are not even trying to make something believable anymore.
(Also there is this car wrap chanel on UA-cam that's always like "exclusive wrap if I mess this up that's 400$ down the drain". Those are also fake. Expensive wraps are made from a special material that goes back to it's original state of you heat it up with a heat gun. The only way to actually ruin it is to ripp it apart but that takes a lot of force)
The most valuable thing after this paint protection job is the film on the car body. The car will degrade way more rapidly before the film paint protection degrades.
Yep, my mom had a Mercedes, it was on the “low end” and still was extremely expensive and took a lot of maintenance. They now make Mercedes that have pre-paid maintenance packages as well as extending warranties. It’s an insanely expensive car, and has the most expensive maintenance. It’s almost like a “scam” but people willingly choose to buy into for the prestige. If you ask me, there are a lot more worthwhile things that you can do with your money, if you even have that much to begin with. 😮💨
Now that’s the biggest bs I’ve ever heard as a car painter. Matte paint that’s also metallic comes WITH clearcoat 9.8/10 times. Non metallic paint too.
Also extremely experienced polishers can indeed buff out imperfections, but it’s pretty difficult to get it matching.
Matte paint jobs are clear coat. The clear is just a matted finish, like how you can get house paint in gloss, eggshell, satin, matte. Same applies for automotive paints.

That’s why you buy regular gloss paint, and have stealth PPF put on it if you want that look.

Matte paint does in fact have a clear coat. But no you cannot repair it without painting the panel.

Mercedes Matte colors have a soft Matte-effect finish instead of traditional gloss
. The Matte effect is entirely in the Clearcoat. The other paint layers are identical to traditional gloss finish.

Matt paint does have a clear coat. All you do is add a flatten agent into the clear when mixing.

Gray Matte paint shouldn't be permitted to be used on vehicles. It blends into the road and reduces your visibility. Dodge discontinued "destroyer gray" because it was aptly named

yes it does have a clearcoat, and yes you can fix it. It's no different than any other paint correction.
Not a fan of matte myself, but to each their own. Still a real nice car.
PPF looks so easy to apply but if I tried i would take hours 😂
