You’re right! I didn’t notice that. And when you think about it, Cindy has a much stronger innate hatred for Jimmy, meanwhile Libby is a little more chill about it and usually (not always) has a problem with him when he directly does something wrong
Natural hair, and also the aesthetic/clothing she would wear to complement it is probably as spot-on for the Queen's own attire in the mural. The kinda-bland pink dress is likely a little historically inaccurate, but it's still an amazing case where a character reclaims their heritage, and in doing so realizes how great they really are.
As a black woman in the US who was a kid when this show was newly airing, Libby was the first character I saw embracing her natural hair. I struggled to overcome the urge to chemically burn my scalp to have "good" hair. It still took me till high school to grow out my curls, but it was representation like this that made it possible. That brings me so much joy, friend!! Representation like that is so valuable and it warms my heart knowing that it's able to make a change in peoples lives. No one deserves to feel pressured by society to hurt their scalp in the name of keeping up a standard when they have naturally beautiful hair that definitely deserves to be appreciated

Yes, it’s like, the joke referring to Bolbi Stroganovskis homeland, was actually called, “back hair a stan.” I rewatch the show as a young adult and still missed it until five years ago!
Fun Fact: Libby's voice actress (Crystal Scales) also voiced Cleo Carter in the animated series, "Tutenstein," which focused on Ancient Egyptian culture (much like this episode)
I knew i recognized her voice! I feel like she was one of the few black voice actresses of the time that wasn’t Cree Summer. Not to trash on her, she’s amazing! It’s just that there really was (and maybe still is) a lack of black female voice actresses for kids cartoons.
Love how the episode not only updated Libby's look and character It also planted deeper seeds for Sheen X Libby and Jimmy X Cindy relationships Sheen: Smoking!!! I'll be her king anytime....😍 ( Talking about Libby's identical looking ancestor) Cindy immediately gets jealous when they thought Jimmy's "I need you" to Libby was romantic.
Same with loving the update to Libby as a character but it did the opposite in their relationships for me. As I did, and still do, greatly dislike Cindy. We all knew Cindy and Jimmy were end game cause that's the way these shows work but Libby getting flustered over Jimmy's 'confession' gave me the hope they would do something bold and different and change her to the love interest. Would have been interesting to see her evolve from basically Cindy's side kick to the heroine.
@@luisvelazquez1025Your comment reminded me of Valerie from Danny Phantom! I used to root for her to be the main love interest bc her duel identity as an antagonist was sooo intriguing. I’ll have to give the show a rewatch to remember exactly how her relationship with Danny develops and concludes bc I can’t recall if they end up together
Libby’s new hairstyle in this episode was a braided bob. A style that was very trendy on the 90s for black women and a short resentence a few years ago. This episode made a big impression on me as a kid he usage you can tell the artists really went out of way to research and put a lot into her new design. I wish video games would put in the same effort lol
Thinking about it, Libby could’ve gotten a spin off show and it arguably could’ve been more successful than planet sheen as a cult classic. Also Nickelodeon lacked cartoons (3d or otherwise) and live action shows with black characters as the main characters and center focus during a time on the Disney channel where that’s so raven and proud family were releasing episodes.
The beauty of the subtext of this episode where Libby finds more about her history and culture and embraces it with the help of her friends definitely puts this episode up there for me in terms of top neutron episodes
I think this episode was absolutely pivotal in bringing Libby into the spotlight. Before that, she was mostly just known as being Cindy’s best friend but then she officially became one of the gang. And I love that they didn’t just make it a one-off thing; it was a great change that stayed until the end of the run.
I was watching Jordan Fringe massive compilation about Jimmy Neutron and i always love when he speaks about the change of looks and personality of Libby ever since that whole Mummy episodes. Neat you decided to also speak about this. She was one of my fav around that time.
Afro Textured hair is hard to do in CGI back then, I supposed that's why Libby had "white" manicured hair, a limitation to the tech. I actually like the redesign
Not realy the Egyptain wig style is done by making a Model from recolored Rope And Traditonal subsahran african hairstyles would mostly even be easier than that wig style And an afro would be much easier in that artstyle
@@Tacom4ster you are surprised your comment is debunked by basic logic ans looking at the Show even the Most complex Hairstyle is easily possibel in this artstyle
This is probably my favorite episode. I'm a huge history nerd myself, it was always my favorite subject. Anything involving Egyptian is very interesting. I loved it when Sheen tried to explain what the hieroglyphics😂😂 say
There was Chalkzone with Rudy and Penny... A what could have been at least... Along with John and Shiera from the Justice League and Doug and Patti (technically).
30:15 TBF, the whole, Jimmy x Cindy thing wasn't all that different from Arnold and Helga. The only thing that really separated them was that Jimmy actively responded to both Cindy's remarks and advances whereas Arnold would just brush off Helga's remarks and was unaware of her advances (but would attempt with both Lila and Ruth). Aside from improving Libby's character, I did like how this ep. foreshadowed Libby and Sheen's relationship. Again, another parallel to Hey Arnold in the case of Gerald and Phoebe; a case where the main ship is a "Will They, Won't They" debacle, while the secondary ship has already sailed....
This is also one of my top favorite episodes and I think for many of the reasons you said. I liked Libby a lot and it was fun seeing her become more her own person instead of just Cindy's friend. Her later relationship with Sheen was also something that I liked, even though it's not usually a pairing type I'm fond of as too many poorer writers let the guy be too stupid and contribute nothing to the relationship. With Libby and Sheen you can actually see how she genuinely likes him and how he's constantly hyping her up. They balance each other well and it was nice to see their overall healthy dynamic vs Cindy and Jimmy's utter dysfunction.
When animated characters have permanent changes to their character is one of the most memorable moments in tv for me. I barely watched Jimmy neutron but I always remembered this episode.
Growing up as a black girl this episode was HUGE for me. They had taken Libby from the "token black friend" stereotype to an actual human child with thoughts, emotions, and soul. This was incredibly validating for me. Never had I ever felt more seen in a cartoon until I saw a character who looked just like me. This is what got me into the show because before her transformation, I found the show average and a bit boring.
Ok, that Harrison Ford joke hit me so hard, I did a double take. The stuff you miss as a kid, you come back as an adult and are like, "Wait, they said that!? Ok, that was funny/risky! How did I miss that!?" Jackie Chan Adventures is another example of this, but I won't dive too much into that.
I remember this episode and seeing Libby, my favorite character, get a makeover and more focus was such a treat. Plus the name of the queen, Hasabadaslapya, had me in stitches every time I heard her name 🤣
Sheen: "Im related to the guy that invented Baseball!🤓☝🏽" Libby: "Whaat?!🤯" Carl: "WOW☺️" Cindy: "Really?!😃" Sheen: "Im sorry, did I say baseball?, I meant spray on eyebrows😏" That boy Sheen is hilarious😭😭🤣🤣
I remember that when this episode first came-out lots of people were taking notice just how much Libby’s voice actress looked like Cleopatra and what’s even more interesting is that this wasn’t the only show that detail effected. It also affected the show Tutenstein as Libby’s voice actress also voiced Cleo in that show which was centered around a boy mummy and the mischief sounding him.
Her voice actress looks nothing like what Cleopatra looked like, Cleopatra was not known for beauty (said voice actor being what most would consider beauty). And she was not Egyptian she was Greek.
As a descendant of American slaves, I never got to know much about my ancestors and their culture. Their owners forced them into conformity, banned them from reading and writing, and never bothered to keep thorough records. It took a DNA test to figure out that they were from the African region now known as Nigeria. But even just looking at everything after all that, my family history still ended up being pretty impactful. My grandparents have a sword, which they told me was a family heirloom dating back to the civil war. I noticed it looked a bit different from most Civil War era swords, so I decided to do a bit of research and ultimately figured out that, based on the design, it most likely belonged to a Union medical officer. The thing is, I’m from Florida, which is about as deep into the Deep South as one can get, and my family has, by all accounts, lived here since slavery. So the only possible explanation for that sword being a family heirloom of ours is that one of my ancestors escaped slavery, temporarily left his family behind, travelled all the way to the North via the Underground Railroad, learned to read and write, studied medicine, joined a black unit in the Union army to become a field medic, kept his fellow black soldiers alive while they fought to free his family and countless others like them, survived and won the deadliest war in American history, returned to Florida as a free man, and built a farm for his family to live in somewhere near Tallahassee where my grandfather used to live. And honestly, that sounds like something a member of my family would do in a situation like that.
@@mudbaeley9199 Glad you liked it. The whole thing was kinda crazy to think about and this video reminded me of it, so I figured other people here may be interested.
I will say this. Libby being added to the end is great. But learning more about the show. People tend to forget at times this show was Canceled so the show didn't really get to continue. From what i remember the company that made it went under and basically fully finished the show It could be both. But i hope this helped or If Dusk can fact check this as well. But you can tell after this EP Libby did change for her going forward. This was a good shift up to the status quo. It remained consistent that to me shows the creators did care a lot and it grew over time. Thanks for reading (anyone who happens to see it.)
You never fail to amaze me and show me why I am glad I subscribed every time you upload. ❤ Sidenote; Queen Hasabataslapya sounds like “How about I slap 👋🏾 you” 😂
I think that it’s funny that in Jimmy Neutron video games they continued to use the same Cindy design from the movie but they eventually updated Libby’s post season one look.
25:41 I think what shows a considerable effort in investing in Libby as a character is she’s the only character that had such a drastic change in their default model. Like an easy example of how they’ll shortcut some costume changes, look at the baseball ep when their regular clothes are just retextured to look like a uniform (the sleeve lengths give it away most). But I’m pretty sure Libby is the only character that had a hair AND clothing change to her default model. I think there might’ve been a growing realization that Libby was needed as a balance on Cindy’s side to Jimmy and his 2 friends. Otherwise conflict with her wouldn’t work outside of strictly Jimmy vs Cindy, they need a balance for Cindy so that more characters can be pulled into a situation if needed in terms of storytelling. I think Libby is likely the last of the five to be developed to flesh Cindy out so it’s when they’re trying to write eps with Cindy as an antagonist, naturally they have to develop Libby more. As she’s being more fleshed out, I guess the direction she went didn’t match the concept she started from so they changed her character model. So it’s really telling that they made such a drastic change to her model and never really anyone else. First created as a means of balancing the cast and contributing to situations that needed a sort of “team” and as the writers got to know her, she became the character that we see them committing to in this ep.
i want to verify a point you had at the very begining. So Libby is an antagonist early on but i don't feel that she was ever out to "Get" jimmy like cindy or the other antagonists did, more like her actions would be just on the other side of what Jimmy was doing. (Great vid DTS, glad to get another character breakdown from Jimmy Neutron)
100% She was never really plotting to get Jimmy or anything like that. That was always Cindy's job 😆 It always felt like she was just kind of there for the ride early on in the series. She would poke fun and laugh, but in all reality, that was about the extent of her antagonizing lol.
@@DuskTillShawn effectively Libby was the "goon" for Cindy. This episode when Libby isn't the "goon" for her is irritating her. Although since she was being a total Janet Perlstein this episode at least they came up with one good "i'm unamused" joke for her. "Good thing we're in a tomb because you're boring us to death." Oddly Libby and the boys were not bored...they like it when Jimmy plays bus driver...er hovercraft driver...they all really needed a field trip.
I love and appreciate the subtitles! But I admit I’m a very new viewer. Also you got a new sub! This video was really nice, your voice is soothing and a perfect balance, you’re neither dead inside nor overly obnoxious. Looking forward to more!
that wasnt even perfume it was a spray that causes those exposed to it to go mad with power. Jimmy did make a perfume as a gift for Libby’s birthday but he entrusted Carl to wrap it. Guess what happens
Episodes like this are why the second season is my favorite from Jimmy Neutron. The episodes became a lot more adventurous and more character dynamics were explored.
Ignoring the (quite literally) Skin deep nature of that position; I can see an interesting angle to a romantic interest between Libby and Jimmy. As character's; They're kind of opposing ends of the spectrum. Jimmy is heavily focused on academic interests like science and technology, where Libby is vary much portrayed as a much more artistically minded individual with a love of music and visual design. It could've been interesting to see them explore the tug of war between "opposites attract" and "we have nothing in common" vs the "will they/won't they" and "rivalry to romance" angle of Jimmy and Cindy. Ignoring the annoying "love triangle" cliche: it might've even been an interesting thing to see the two different angles being in direct competition as well.
I totally forgot about them omg i shipped them so hard their dynamic was literally fucking perfect. She was a ghost hunter and hes the ghost boy but also just the general conflict they actually had....unlike him and sam with the will they wont they best friend dynamic altho i do love sam it was nice to see other potential romance options for the protagonist @kagemaru397
@@arimonroe7060 He IS supposed to be a Spiderman copy. And he practically has a harem. Would have been interesting to see a Gwen Stacy like character in the mix. Maybe a girl kinda like Maddie on a more surface level than Sam (Mary Jane) and Valerie (Black Cat).

Libby and Sheen were always my favorite characters in Jimmy Neutron and this was one of my favorite episodes! Now I could see them having a Tahani and Jason from The Good Place kind of relationship as adults
I think part of the reason the show's directional shift worked as well as it did is because, when you stop to think about it, the new tone post-Beach Party Mummy is actually truer to the original movie than what came before. Season One is very sitcom-y and kind of feels like it's stuck in the movie's shadow, which is pretty standard fare for a TV spin-off of a movie, making the shift to a darker, more character/adventure driven format feel almost like a course correction.
This has always been one of my favorite episodes of the show as I loved that it made Libby Feel more like her own character rather than acting as an extension of Cindy’s character which I always hated.
Weirdly enough we are lucky that she even was in so many episodes. The voice actor was doing 6 different roles! The PJS, Static shock, Oswald, tutenstein, and also a few movies. She was well on her way to being the next mel blanc. You couldn't escape her.
This truly was one of the most interesting episodes of the series. AND it was a lasting shakeup. Which was refreshing to me back when I first saw it. You're right that this episode beyond that could have easily been like so many of the others. First, yeah, Jimmy was VERY prone to mistakes and IS still just a kid who doesn't know it all just because he's (in a relatively good way) abnormally smart/intelligent. You also have a point that Cindy's kind of a bad friend for not letting her have this. The talent show episode's another example that things are kinda toxic between them. Never thought of it that way that Hasabataslapya being the Libby of her time in actions AS WELL AS looks. Makes sense considering she wasn't even 10 years older than Libby was then when she died. (8 since this was before the dictator episode.) And this WAS a good example of representation with Libby's hair. Like something that'd would have happened more recently, but in the early 2000s. You have Sheen spot on. And I too wish they'd done more with Libby. Jimmy was the star of the show, Carl showed up in more of the shorts than Sheen and was iconic in his own way, Sheen was the iconic goofball friend who got his own show, even if it wasn't so great, and Cindy was the rival and love interest rolled into one. But Libby was just an interesting side character who got bumped up to a main later in the series. Partly for being the main girl's best friend. It'd be interesting to see just WHAT their ultimate intentions for Libby were since they're a coin toss between accidental and intentional as far as can be easily researched. On that note, I need to bring up some lesser known things about the show....and what it could have been both before it started and before it ended. First, Libby and Nick were originally going to be cousins. And (I ACTUALLY just found this out looking up Nick's final race/ethnicity) Nick was originally gonna be black and a basketballer, which makes the thing (that kinda almost was) with him and Cindy more interesting. If they'd kept the crush thing between them from the movie, that'd have meant that Cindy was crushing on her best friend's cousin. Back to the JimmyxLibby thing, that would have been interesting to have this be at least kind of explored if not made the endgame or close. Yeah, it would have been A LOT like TrixiexTimmyxVeronica and PaulinaxDannyxStar (Even though Star never cared about Danny like that. In EITHER form.) But for the latter, it's surface level....I think if this had happened....Libby could/would have been Jimmy's VALERIE. ESPECIALLY when you consider that Paulina and Valerie used to be friends and you put Cindy in the Paulina role instead of the Sam one. This isn't just putting together a white boy and a black girl. It's at least kinda deeper. Both are side characters tied to the main characters love interest who get a more important role in the series later on. (though Valerie got her upgrade earlier than Libby) And taking into how Danny was originally gonna end up with Valerie, if they'd switched it up and had JimmyxLibby be a thing instead, it'd have been like that, AND give Cindy and Libby a major arc with their friendship (Which would have been different from Paulina and Valerie in which the latter just tosses away the former unceremoniously. But in both cases, the dynamic changes for the permanent.) And Jimmy would come to understand Libby better just like Danny did Valerie. Now the other things. Season 3.....wasn't intended to be the last one. There were plans for a Season 4 but Nickelodeon decided they were done with the Jimmy Neutron verse at that point. I've heard some things about this one. 1. Betty and Cindy were gonna come to peace with each other in an episode where those two and Libby fight off a menace together. Yeah, she's a 3rd wheel in the grand scheme of things, but they gave her something to do in all of this. There's a script online for it I found years ago if anyone's interested. 2. Going back to Nick....he was gonna play a bigger role in this one. Like in the movie. It's that reason alone I wish Nickelodeon had just done Season 4 and ended it there. I would have REALLY liked to see how this would have worked. ESPECIALLY between he and Jimmy. They to me kinda feel like a neo Doug and Roger. And maybe they would have come to an agreement/peace too. Including over Cindy, who BOTH have been romantically tied to. Like they planned to with Cindy and Betty. As for the subtitles, only thing I can think of is have them line up more with moments you speak if you can. I also like the music. Reminds me of Yugioh. Another show I was really into back in 2003. ^_^
I love that the Egyptian beach party episode was the turning point not just because libby kept her new hairstyle but also became more of a main character and rven changed her outfit to reflect that
Libby was my fav character of the show but I always found strange that they gave her straight hair, now I know it was probably hardware limitations, because the only time I saw black girls with straight hair was at parties or events so for me her old look was a bit too "formal" to the main group, so I quite loved when they changed her hair and made her look more casual. Some just small notes, I would suggest changing the background music because when it repeats for far too long it starts being distracting with time, and really like that you put subtitles but would suggest to put them a bit higher, like at least one line up, so the red bar don't get in the way when you pause, great video as always ^^
If the queen was only eighteen when she died and Libby was her descendant then it makes me say yeah that pretty obviously implies that the ancient Egyptian didn't exactly follow the same rules as most societies in the modern age when it comes to what the age of majority is considered to be however I would also say in real life that wouldn't exactly be far from the truth in ancient Egypt.
I mean you could just as easily argue that she got pregnant shortly after turning 18 and then died within the year (possibly during childbirth). At least in context of the show.
Many countries didn't adhere to what we consider norms. People did not tend to live nearly as long as we do now due to lack of advancements in medicine and illnesses and infections being much more lethal. What was considered acceptable ages for having children only became higher as the need to keep populations up decreased because people weren't dieing before thirty on the regular or even during first childbirths and such.
Honestly what I liked about Libby was that she turned from Cindy’s pet cheerleader into her own character that on her own accord started hanging out with Jimmy, Sheen and Carl, calling them friends and even started calling out Cindy when she’s taken things to far especially with Jimmy.
Great video, the music loop used was a little repetitive but otherwise a well executed video on a cool topic. I also appreciate you writing out your subtitles manually
It's been so long since I remember watching this show, but for me I always remember enjoying Cindy and Jimmy's love hate relationship. It was always just fun to see her and him both subtlety acknowledge each others true feelings in certain personal moments, and then both immediately go back to their normal heated jabbing at each other. It made it feel like they genuinely enjoy the intimate personal moments they have with each other now and then- but truly do enjoy enjoy the heated rivalry/frenemy dynamic more with each other. Unfortunately its been so long that i can't remember to much else about the series generally other than certain episode plots and things like that- but i did always really like Libby and when her and Cindy joined the adventures- and this mummy episode was always one of my favorites. 😺

Fun Fact: Libby's voice actress (Crystal Scales) also voiced Cleo Carter in the animated series, "Tutenstein," which focused on Ancient Egyptian culture (much like this episode)
Oh i remember that show, it was on discovery kids! I only ever managed to catch a few episodes.
Oooh yea I loved Tutenstein! I loved her character, too. Good times...
I knew i recognized her voice! I feel like she was one of the few black voice actresses of the time that wasn’t Cree Summer. Not to trash on her, she’s amazing! It’s just that there really was (and maybe still is) a lack of black female voice actresses for kids cartoons.
Her name is Crystal Scales? Oh wow, that's such an awesome name!!!
Love how the episode not only updated Libby's look and character
It also planted deeper seeds for Sheen X Libby and Jimmy X Cindy relationships
Sheen: Smoking!!! I'll be her king anytime....😍 ( Talking about Libby's identical looking ancestor)
Cindy immediately gets jealous when they thought Jimmy's "I need you" to Libby was romantic.
@maqaeda They made Danny get with Sam, which I feel was the wrong choice. Valarie is best girl

Makes sense since this was the early 2000s and Jimmy Neutron stems back to the 90s.
Anyone noticed that Libby said she loved her new look and wanted to keep it and in her redesign she has a similar hairstyle? Good continuity!!
And The Cleveland Show was just ending when Planet Sheen started. They should have went for it.
"Libby in Retroville" would be something I'd've greenlit.

“Let me do her hair!! Let me do her hair”

I always liked Libby's new look. It always looked more natural.
Her new hair was such a glow up
I also love Libby's birthday episode, where we see Dictator Libby. 😂

Not realy the Egyptain wig style is done by making a Model from recolored Rope

I believe that was the joke
And Jimmy had Betty and that one cowgirl. Mainly Betty though.
Episodes to talk Gerald lives alone, the time Hugh puppet came to life, Jimmy goes to college
Shame that her voice actress, Crystal Scales, doesnt voice act anymore. She wasnt even in the reunions for Jimmy Neutron.
I believe at the 2022 reunion panel, she did mean to come but something came up last minute.
When animated characters have permanent changes to their character is one of the most memorable moments in tv for me. I barely watched Jimmy neutron but I always remembered this episode.
Also Egyptian beach party is such a bop and catchy song they must've had a blast creating it
Libby: Sheen, did you take your medicine this morning?
Sheen: (as apprehensively humanly as possible) Maybe…
Edit: it never gets old
Growing up as a black girl this episode was HUGE for me.

I like that they put Libby apart of the intro and make her one of the main characters.
Sheen: "Im related to the guy that invented Baseball!🤓☝🏽"
Libby: "Whaat?!🤯"
Carl: "WOW☺️"
Cindy: "Really?!😃"
Sheen: "Im sorry, did I say baseball?, I meant spray on eyebrows😏"
That boy Sheen is hilarious😭😭🤣🤣
Libby strutted that runway so that all the following Female POC main characters could RUN!!!
This was amazing to read. Thank you for sharing your family history with us!

100%
She was never really plotting to get Jimmy or anything like that. That was always Cindy's job 😆
It always felt like she was just kind of there for the ride early on in the series. She would poke fun and laugh, but in all reality, that was about the extent of her antagonizing lol.
@@DuskTillShawn exactly, im really glad that they did end up giving her better representation in the story after this episode.
@@DuskTillShawn effectively Libby was the "goon" for Cindy. This episode when Libby isn't the "goon" for her is irritating her.

Libby and Sheen were always my favorite characters in Jimmy Neutron and this was one of my favorite episodes! Now I could see them having a Tahani and Jason from The Good Place kind of relationship as adults
Libby still stands as one of the best characters in the show period. ❤
Plus Nick was supposed to play a bigger role in Season 4. (Which never came out)
Side note - the addition of captions is amazing! The font needs some work I think but thank you! Now I don't need to rely on awful AI CC
This has always been one of my favorite episodes of the show as I loved that it made Libby Feel more like her own character rather than acting as an extension of Cindy’s character which I always hated.
she was treated like bonnie Bennett from vampire dairies
Right after this episode, she became more of a diva
Weirdly enough we are lucky that she even was in so many episodes. The voice actor was doing 6 different roles! The PJS, Static shock, Oswald, tutenstein, and also a few movies. She was well on her way to being the next mel blanc. You couldn't escape her.

Comedy is realizing the principal just told a whole fabricated story about a tanning salon that never existed 😂
19:54 Jimmy's no fun. The singing and dancing mummies were the highlight of the episode!

“This will be difficult without my tongue”
I love the Harrison Ford joke because I know if they did call him he would ngaf.
