The subway episode has a good moral on staying calm in a situation like that and working together to keep everyone calm Again... I know it's said this in a previous comment but we don't get shows like this
This is an episode I remember more for its portrayal of city life, from the way everyone gets around, to the kinds of people on the subway. Along with that good ol laid back season 1 charm.
As someone who has lived in a city like that all my life, can confirm you meet all kinds of people. Good, Bad, Weird, so many people. Definitely search "Only in New York" and check the playlist. We are a city of weirdos, and I would have it any other way.
It’s definitely possible to feel someone’s weight via vibrations on the ground. I would think it would be even easier on a subway that has a floor that isn’t completely solid and Harold’s whole body weight would be transferred into the pole which would be going into the ground. I can see (da dum tss) the old man knowing Harold’s weight even though he’s blind.
I would love to see more Dark Side of Hey Arnold! Such a good topic for other episodes... Or you can look at episodes about Grandpa Phil or Grandma Pookie. You decide what you wish to do, Shawn! Steely Phil is one of my favorite episodes in the whole series.
Heck yeah, man! I’ve got great plans for the next Dark Side of Hey Arnold! 😁 I’m hoping to get into a groove where they aren’t so spaced apart lol. I hate going so long between them.
I can see them going to a theater far away if they were trying to see an R movie. Theaters near their home could recognize them thus risking getting into trouble with adults. And it makes sense that a kid would be afraid of the subway. As an adult, you just put your earbuds in and avoid eye contact and you’re good.
This era for media has been crap for the last few years from UA-cam disabling the comment section of even the oldest videos to companies prioritizing remakes/revivals/sequels over original content to Victor Zsasz or whatever his name is purging other people’s hard work from availability just to save money. Sometimes, it’s nice to look back on the shows we still have like this one.
To answer your question about the blind man and Harold's weight, usually when people are bigger their ways of speaking are a bit thicker as well. I lost a pretty decent amount of weight and notice that my voice is absolutely less heavy too if that makes sense
Also reminds me of the bus driver (once again voiced by Dan Castellaneta) in "Snow" who yells "WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!" when his windshield is covered in snow
As an adult, I'm more annoyed at Arnolds grandparents for not just calling a cab for them, or having someone pick the kids up. Like, come on, you're in a boarding house full of people and NONE of them have a connection to someone with a car who can responsibly drive to where the kids are and drive them home?
I’m not sure anyone in the boarding house needs a car that deep in town, except for Ernie’s wrecking ball and I’m not sure I’d want my grandkids riding in that.
I didn’t even consider that lmao. 😆 You’re totally right. Why didn’t grandpa Phil just hop in the Packard and have all the kids pile in? That would’ve made so much more sense. lol
@@DuskTillShawn Simple Arnold didn't ask. Phil and Gertie are a lot my grandparents. They Trust Arnold, to know when he needs their help or is in danger. My grandparents didn't have a curfew for their kids as teenagers or me but we knew if really needed a ride we could ask rather then walk or take the public transit. Unless they Thought otherwise for some reason.
The speaker was one of the funniest parts of this episode. For me, I loved this episode for how everyone begun to fall apart and came together for a dog and a song of unity.
In my area, there is a Regal theater and an AMC; back in the 90s and early 2000s they would sometimes split which movies they would show so the audience could only see Movie-X at Regal and Movie-Y at AMC. Maybe the movie they wanted to see was at that theater, they took the bus planning on taking it back, but the movie ran long and now they're stuck. Keep in mind that these are also children and even if the theater is only 5-10 miles away from Arnold's house, that could still take hours to walk even without Harold slowing them down. As far as the blind man being able to tell Harold was fat, he probably knows Harold is a kid by the way he sounds and can most likely feel the heavier vibrations when he walks.
@@DuskTillShawn No problem, Hey Arnold was one of my favorite shows growing up and your deep dives are always fun to watch. Hey Arnold was a show that wasn't afraid to handle serious subjects and I like seeing it get the respect it deserves from you and all the people in the comments.
So I've been in the situation of the train (J train to be exact), The stopping force does send people flying, especially people who have a weak grip on the poles/handles. No one went crazy in the time we were stuck (2 hours) and luckily I was with 2 friends (One who was visiting NYC for the first time)
Fellow New Yorker. And yikes, I can barely do 2 minutes of being stuck. 2 hours would be maddening for me. Not that experienced with the J train, but some train lines are crappier than others. (Looking at you, G train.)
I have family in NYC and I've been on that subway. I can't even imagine being stuck on that. The closest I've ever gotten to a situation like that was when I took the Metra from Chicago back to my home in the suburbs on the night of Lollapalooza. Somebody got hit by a freight train (iirc) on our train line. We were delayed for about an hour or so. Then there were several freight trains on the line so our train had to move very slowly. I didn't get home until about 3am.
This is a classic episode and I didn’t know til just now that the character of Grubby was voiced in the episode by Luke Skywalker himself Mark Hamill loving the content Shawn especially the dark side of Hey Arnold
Oh and another fun fact Shawn Dan Castellaneta who is best known for voicing Homer Simpson is also the voice of Hey Arnold’s grandpa and was the voice of the conductor in this episode as well
i think the reason they were all hesitant to take the subway is because they were not good at navigating the routes. But because they dont use it often they dont have experience with it which adds to the fear
I agree. Funny enough, in most other episodes of Hey Arnold, when the kids need to go somewhere, they usually just take the bus and that's considered to be normal for them.
I'll be honest here, I actually sympathize with everyone in this situation, even the conductor and mental health professional. The truth is, when you're stuck in a situation you believe to be hopeless, your brain freaks out. Human instinct tells us to survive, that's how our minds are wired, but when there's something threatening that survival that seems impossible to get around, our minds can start switching from calm and collected to extremely frightened and panicked. That's most likely why these two people acted so unprofessionally. In their minds, they believed this might have been the end for them, so, as said before, their minds started going crazy and it caused them to say things they probably wouldn't have said otherwise.
10:53 the patient bears a striking resemblance to Helga's therapist in that one other episode. Anyone else see it? Edit: okay I just looked it up and they could definitely be twins. Given the context between these two completely different characters, it was probably intentional
Hey arnold, spongebob and king of the hill. These shows are timeless. The writing, the animation, the music, the voice acting is just perfect. All the characters voices matched the art. Thats one of my main green flags for a good animated show/movie
Avatar last airbender, ed edd n eddy, rick n morty, gravity falls, boondocks, kung fu panda movies, prince of egypt, road to el doarado, treasure planet, toy story, etc
As a blind person, we wouldn't be able to tell a person's appearance if we were completely blind. (I can still see shape and colour in one eye with no peripheral vision, only movement in my other eye.)
Sorry to be so nosey, but how are you able to read comments? Also what is Ehlers Danlos syndrome? I could Google it but I'm more curious to hear your own take on it. I hope you know I am genuinely curious and not trying to be a jerk about it
@jonbourgoin182 I'm more than happy to answer such a polite enquiry. I read comments via a screen reader/text to speech software that comes built in to most smartphones. Ehlers Danlos Syndrome is a genetic disability that makes the collagen (the thing that makes your skin stretch) faulty. It makes our ligaments and tendons too stretchy to hold our joints in place, meaning they dislocate extremely easily. It also gives us gastric, bowel, heart, and other organ issues, aswell as constant pain in any area of the body (mostly joints) that mean we can't walk far, and we are in agony when we try to exercise, and we break bones more easily too (I fell 6 inches to the ground and shattered my elbow into 5 pieces because it makes our joints overextend).

The conductor kind of reminds me of a dark comedy comic. I might draw someday. The scene opens up on an airplane mid flight. The pilot starts at the PA system. Panel one : attention everyone this is your pilot speaking we’re all going to die! Panel two : panicking passengers Panel three : someday but this plane is gonna arrive early and have a smooth uneventful flight.

The "Hold Hands on the Subway" song is an obvious parody of "We're Sending Our Love Down The Well" from the Simpsons. Which is in and of itself a parody of the "We Are the World" charity song done by celebrities. So I think the implication of the song is it is "well known" in the "Hey Arnold" world. I remember this episode because of the dog having puppies. As for me the closest thing to the subway I've ridden was the plane train at the Atlanta airport. I have more experience with the city bus.
Great video as always. Thanks for the work u put in. This show is so timeless because it’s entertaining, and the values of kindness, hard work, responsibility, and being a good friend are so important. This is the sort of show that’s great for any kid to watch.

Dude, when I saw Gerald’s reaction as I was watching this, I dropped everything I was working on and knew this was the video I needed to make instead lol. If Gerald is THAT shaken, you know it’s an intense situation.
If I may ask, instead of taking the subway why didn’t they just find a pay phone and have Arnold’s grandfather come pick them up? He absolutely would’ve done it and none of them (or at least Arnold wouldn’t) would’ve gotten in trouble. I recommend you look at an episode of The Wild Thornberry’s with a similar premise to this where the thornberry’s get stranded on a deserted island and almost end up turning against each other

Based on one episode i saw something to do with career day i think they showed Helga was also good cop material and im pretty sure they say she even subdued a criminal.
30:43 theres a very later episode where grandma becomes a film noir style dectective (with arnold) to recover grandpa’s stolen packard. In the end you hear arnold’s thoughts “i wonder what its like to have normal grandparents?”. Arnold loves them but they can be overwelming for him too
i don't think they could connect to the train because the power went off and there was no phone signal so they had to try and locate the train first to come up with their solution on getting people out..
The fact yoy confuswd Pookie for Grandma Gwrties name was funny. Pookie is like a term couples use to refer to each other. Like calling aomeone on the street "Grandma Darling."
Love how nonchalant Phil is about grandma going out that late at night, even though he's undoubtedly aware she's probably going to get up to something crazy. Somewhere in their bedroom is no doubt an envelope containing $500-$1000 earmarked specifically for any bail issues.
I heard the blind man and immediately remembered him. As for Harold being big, he could likely hear the weight on the poles, and he sounded like a kid.
Hey awesome video my friend. In response to the underground subway stopping abruptly. I had experience when trains stopped very abruptly when the emergency brakes activating. The subway episode has a good moral on staying calm in a situation like that and working together to keep everyone calm
Again... I know it's said this in a previous comment but we don't get shows like this
Agreed I’ve been stuck underground when the emergency brake is pulled. Best u can do is stay calm follow instructions and help when asked.
Bro, I’m so hyped for your next Dark Side. Take your time dude… but just know we’re all SO EXCITEDDDDD!❤
Exactly, I made the same comment along the same lines.
😁
I’m hoping to get into a groove where they aren’t so spaced apart lol.
"You mean... I'm a daddy?"
Hold up.
😂😂
The blind man making that comment caught me off guard, ngl.
I mean most pet owners consider themselves parents.
@@supersasukemaniacwouldn't that make him a grandparent then?
Come on…that’s just no.
Arnold has a pocket watch. Lets not breeze past that.
I love it so much! I have a pocket watch packed away in my desk somewhere lol. They're so cool!
That pocket watch had an episode dedicated to it. Arnold drops it down the drain and has to play chess against the Sewer King to get it back.
@@Zthewise reading this comment made me instantly remember that episode and how awesome it is.
*children’s media
At least they weren't stuck in an elevator.
Dude, that’s such a huge phobia of mine lol.
I’d panic 😂
@@DuskTillShawn same
Okay but that would have been an interesting episode. 😂
That happened to me this year.
Things could be worse you know?
How? They would’ve been the next victims like the ones in the tower of terror.
To answer your question about the blind man and Harold's weight, usually when people are bigger their ways of speaking are a bit thicker as well. I lost a pretty decent amount of weight and notice that my voice is absolutely less heavy too if that makes sense
The train conductor sounds like the icecream man, that’s what I always thought he looked like 😅
Now my head cannon is that was the jolly olly man trying to get out of the ice cream business and the one time he does 😭😭😭
Also reminds me of the bus driver (once again voiced by Dan Castellaneta) in "Snow" who yells "WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!" when his windshield is covered in snow
@@kieferfulsom4432 The Jolly Olly Man, knowing how emotionally unstable he can be, I could definitely see him doing that as a train conductor.
The blind man, the rude therapist, and the nurse. This seems to be a reference to Steven kings writing tropes.
You’re totally right. Why didn’t grandpa Phil just hop in the Packard and have all the kids pile in? That would’ve made so much more sense. lol
I wondered the same thing; but it would have cut the episode short & not made for as interesting an episode. @DuskTillShawn
Don’t worry, he redeemed himself during the events of “The Flood.” lol
That's totally sound logic! Checks out for sure lol.
Thanks so much for watching! I really appreciate you being here, friend! :D
No one went crazy in the time we were stuck (2 hours) and luckily I was with 2 friends (One who was visiting NYC for the first time)
That’s crazy! Blowing my mind right now that there’s someone here who’s been in this exact situation!
Man I've been waiting for more of the dark side of Hey Arnold. Hope you have been well considering how things are right now
This is a classic episode and I didn’t know til just now that the character of Grubby was voiced in the episode by Luke Skywalker himself Mark Hamill loving the content Shawn especially the dark side of Hey Arnold
Whaaaaaat!? You just blew my mind lol. I love Mark Hamill! He’s an incredible voice actor & actor in general. 😁
Oh and another fun fact Shawn Dan Castellaneta who is best known for voicing Homer Simpson is also the voice of Hey Arnold’s grandpa and was the voice of the conductor in this episode as well
@@DuskTillShawn Not only that, but Mark shares the birthday in September with JG.
Yeah but he's a horrible person in real life. He's batshit crazy!
i think the reason they were all hesitant to take the subway is because they were not good at navigating the routes.
You’re 100% right! Our bodies natural response to danger is going to happen regardless of our profession!
I appreciate your insight, my friend! ☺️
10:53 the patient bears a striking resemblance to Helga's therapist in that one other episode. Anyone else see it?
Edit: okay I just looked it up and they could definitely be twins. Given the context between these two completely different characters, it was probably intentional
I noticed that too. I thought it was her, at first.
Maybe she decided to do the job herself after she experienced this scenerio witht he therapist.
Dr. Bliss
Is the announcer guy voice by the guy that voices Honer Simpson? You can hear Homer when he gets really freaked out. 9:40
Hahaha I believe so!
I have to rewatch this episode now 😂😂😂
Yay new content, even about Hey Arnold. Been missing your videos and glad to hear your voice again.
Thanks friend! I’m glad you enjoy the videos! Be sure to check back tomorrow too! 😉

Whats funny about this episode is Arnold says he knows how to get everyone home before they get in trouble but Arnold is specifically never punished

I love these, so I would definitely like to have more of these! As someone who just turned 30 I miss this era of cartoons so bad, have to vicariously through the reruns lol Thanks for the video’s as always!
Yes!! Thanks 🙏 i absolutely love ur content. U can tell you put all ur effort on these videos. Ur one my favorite UA-camrs!! ❤️

When I started this 4 years ago, if you had told me I’d be on someone’s favorite UA-camrs list one day, I’d have lost my mind haha 🤯
As a nyer, I do find it interesting how my perspective of the train has changed over the years. I too was once freaked out and sad whenever I had to ride it, but come college and needing to use it everyday... I realized it's just pure convenience.
Thanks for the message bro your really awesome hope your day is going great
Let’s goooo new vid how you doing my friend hope all is well can’t wait to watch this, and with Harold and the blind man I think maybe the blind man could hear the floor creak or at least heard the metal rings on the train creak
Hey Arnold has the best music I've heard in a cartoon hands down
Was just watching an old video cause I missed your uploads lol great day already!! 🎉🎉
Wooo! Thanks for being here, friend! 😁
maybe the sound of him landing and moving gives an idea of a person's weight for the blind man to tell.
I always figured he was legally blind but could still see somethings just fine. I had a uncle that could see shapes of people and animals and also lights but was 100% blind for everything else
The conductor kind of reminds me of a dark comedy comic. I might draw someday.
The scene opens up on an airplane mid flight. The pilot starts at the PA system.
Panel one : attention everyone this is your pilot speaking we’re all going to die!
Panel two : panicking passengers
Panel three : someday but this plane is gonna arrive early and have a smooth uneventful flight.
Hahahahaha please email or DM it to me if you draw it! I’d love to see it lmao. That sounds hilarious 😆

This is an episode of Hey Arnold I have never seen before but sounds very fascinating, multi-layered, and heartwarming in the end. Thanks for recommending it to me Shawn.
Sorry for the excessive quotes.
The doctor's voice actor is the inimitable Tony Jay. He also played The Asylum owner in Beauty and the Beast and Judge Claude Frollo in Hunchback.
This is the sort of show that’s great for any kid to watch.
these videos are very insightful and soothing. I love your channel!!
I especially love your concern for the Blind Man's puppies and making sure they get home safely!!
[Teeth Chattering] “I Gotta Have SOMETHING To EAT! Anything, ANYTHING!!” - Gerald
Dude, when I saw Gerald’s reaction as I was watching this, I dropped everything I was working on and knew this was the video I needed to make instead lol.
If Gerald is THAT shaken, you know it’s an intense situation.
Great review show
My favorite part of this episode was Harold hoarding food and than trying to gaslight that he didnt have any.
If I may ask, instead of taking the subway why didn’t they just find a pay phone and have Arnold’s grandfather come pick them up? He absolutely would’ve done it and none of them (or at least Arnold wouldn’t) would’ve gotten in trouble. I recommend you look at an episode of The Wild Thornberry’s with a similar premise to this where the thornberry’s get stranded on a deserted island and almost end up turning against each other
Coming from your Recess video that came into my feed after watching a Blooms video about South Park. You earned the sub with this one.
Thank you for your work man. Truly appreciate it
Aw, thanks friend! I'm so glad you appreciate the videos. I can't thank you enough for your support 😭
I love your deep-dive/"dark side of" videos into these well-loved nostalgic cartoons. I love good lore/story of things that others might not think much of; probably part of my being (proudly) on the Autism spectrum. You have a nice voice that is easy to listen to for this & your giraffe character is adorable.
Thank you so much, friend! It makes me so happy to hear that you enjoy my videos :D I really appreciate your support!
Based on one episode i saw something to do with career day i think they showed Helga was also good cop material and im pretty sure they say she even subdued a criminal.
To this day, I sometimes say "Big. Open. Spaces. Big. **Wide** open spaces."
Arnolds grandma is the best character on the show. Lol
Yay! New Dusktillshawn video!
I can remember this episode 😮
I feel like im making a connection with my 12 year old self
Thanks for the video!
When even Arnold, the positive look on the bright side kind of person, says the movie is bad then you know it was awful
30:43 theres a very later episode where grandma becomes a film noir style dectective (with arnold) to recover grandpa’s stolen packard. In the end you hear arnold’s thoughts “i wonder what its like to have normal grandparents?”. Arnold loves them but they can be overwelming for him too
Whichever one you want to do I'm happy with as long as I get to watch you and I really enjoy these anyway
As a new yorker this ep is so real
16:13 Can I just say how cute it was to see your little giraffe pop up during this shot? I don't know why, I just find that adorable.

You got it, friend! If you could pick the next character, who would it be? 😁
@DuskTillShawn Arnold's grandparents
13:44 was my favorite part of this episode the excitement in the blind man’s voice was just so sweet!
i don't think they could connect to the train because the power went off and there was no phone signal so they had to try and locate the train first to come up with their solution on getting people out..
I turned 35 last week nd I find myself watching these a lot more these days ❤
Am I the only one who thinks of the movie adventures in babysitting after hearing that old guy say GET OUT OF MY HOUSE? 😂😂😂😂😂
The fact yoy confuswd Pookie for Grandma Gwrties name was funny. Pookie is like a term couples use to refer to each other. Like calling aomeone on the street "Grandma Darling."
The only way i could assume the blind guy knew Harold was fat was , maybe he heard his footsteps being louder than his friends.
she definitely fired that therapist after this lol
Love how nonchalant Phil is about grandma going out that late at night, even though he's undoubtedly aware she's probably going to get up to something crazy. Somewhere in their bedroom is no doubt an envelope containing $500-$1000 earmarked specifically for any bail issues.
Thank you for the content you make brother!
It usually depends on the speed on the train. It seems like the train had to do about over 35 mph. As a New Yorker we rely on the subway to get around. But overall I've been waiting for someone to make a video about this episode as I still watch to this day.
Grandpa is such a vibe now that I’m 35 lol
30:05 yeah, being a fat kid during that time - i was called fat by randomly old white people as a kid. It was really a different time.
That’s so messed up. I don’t understand why people have to be so mean 😪
I’m sorry you had to go through that, friend. Some people suck so hard.
It really was. The irony now is that I'm not just "fat" but obese now but I've gotten so much praise for my looks than when I was "skinny" or whatever you'd call it.
