Removing carbon from the atmosphere is not easy, relying on large-scale tree planting as well as new technologies that 'suck' greenhouse gases from the air. While these methods need to be employed as quickly as possible, they will have a minimal effect unless we dramatically reduce our emissions in the first place. This will involve Government and businesses driving the bold structural change demanded by the public. Meanwhile, individuals can make a difference by limiting their carbon footprint as much as possible.

I used to fly abroad four or five times a year. I have now not flown for two years - although covid played a major role in that. But my driving mileage has dropped from 15,000 to just a few hundred. I also keep my house at 17C instead of the previous 22C. Warm jumpers make up the difference. All my lights are LED and I turn things off at the wall rather than relying on standby. Even with Energystar level VI, this makes a difference. Getting a smart meter for electricity and gas allowed me to monitor all this in real time and has made a substantial difference to the way I consume energy in exactly the same way the instantaneous MPG gauge in my car gives me many more miles to the gallon.

The economics of heat pumps are driven by the ratio of electricity and gas prices, and the heat pump ‘gain’ - the units of heat energy emitted for each unit of electricity used.
• Heat pumps are mostly deployed in countries with very cheap electricity.
• In the UK, the electricity:gas price ratio has been increasing for many years, as increasing penetration of renewable energy makes the grid progressively less efficient. The ratio is currently around 4.
• Heat pump gains have been improving, but only slowly. The median for an air-source heat pump is around 2.8.
• Thus, even taking into account inefficiencies of gas boilers, the majority of people will find a gas boiler cheaper to run than an air-source heat pump.
• Although substantial grants are available to install heat pumps, once the (net) capital cost is taken into account, almost nobody doing so will see an overall payback.
• To assess the overall economic effect of installing a heat pump, the capital cost before grants has to be incorporated into the calculation. If this is done, it is found that no heat pump installation is economic.
• The marginal abatement cost of reducing emission through heat pumps is over £300/t CO2, several times more than estimates of the damage caused by global warming.
• Installing heat pumps is therefore a mistake, on every measure.

Those that have noticed that the carbon dioxide concentration in earths atmosphere is 0.04% compared to its closest neighbouring planets of Venus & Mars that have over 90% in their atmospheres will have little difficulty in deducing that this is due to photosynthesis on earth. Photosynthesis is the climate controlling force on earth and has been so for the last 3 billion years. Photosynthesis counteracts the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide to balance the climate in favour of the life forms we know today.
Therefore it stands to reason that to maintain this life-friendly climate, photosynthesis is to be strengthened, not weakened. On land, forest canopies average 98% photosynthesis capability whereas ploughed fields of grains have less than 50% photosynthesis capability. Thus it is the substitution of grains in ploughed fields for trees that is weakening plants ability to control the planet’s climate. Worse still, carbon dioxide that promotes plant growth is being constrained in the public forum. Is this not folly?
The solution has been obvious for some time - reduce grain for food, & increase trees for food. We need more trees rather than fields of grain and we need to strengthen the tree growth by providing them with carbon dioxide, water & the nutrient-laden soil.
Fossil fuels have been a blessing in almost every way but for the tragedy of the commons. The taste for bread & patisserie has encouraged farmers to deforest our land, laying the top soil bare for erosion & desertification. We need to change our food intake to strengthen nature in our favour.

I think its really hilarious that it takes just as much c02 to run electric than it does gas. Not to mention the slave mines it will take to mine all those batteries
If batteries are powered by fossil fuel energy then yes, emissions are greater. But electrical technologies can (and often are) powered by renewables like wind and solar. Mining the metals is a big human rights issue which is why battery technologies alone are not the answer. There are other ways to store electricity that we will cover in future videos.

Carbon net zero affects all industry, energy, transport, agriculture, military and political aspects. If you look on "Annual carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions worldwide from 1940 to 2023" you will see that apart from a little dip for Covid it only goes up. The reason I think the policy is futile is a) very expensive b) any reduction by the West will be more than compensated by the developing world c) in a world of political competition destroying your own industry is dangerous.

@@s.normantitus6658 No it means you have to demonstrate via a cost benefit analysis that carbon net zero or carbon capture is a worthwhile solution. Bear in mind also that the cost benefit differs for each country. If you want to prove A, well prove A, don't prove B which is a necessary but insufficient condition for A. The number of people who reference the IPCC report which shows there is a correlation between CO2 and average global temperature and then go on to say well this proves carbon net zero is urgent, well the IPCC report doesn't prove that.
