  • Do you wish that you could be paid for the energy you use rather than having to pay for it? David Shad is an engineer and futurist who has a solution to the worldwide energy crisis we are experiencing due to exponential population growth. His idea replaces current energy producing means with sustainable and environmentally friendly methods which ensure sufficient energy to power the world today and for years to come. Find out how David plans to turn the biggest culprit of the energy crisis into our greatest asset and how you can do your part to save our planet.
    Fueled by a combination of family history and great passion, David Shad grew up knowing he wanted to be a world-class solution provider. Driven by his desire, he graduated from the University of Southern California, one of the nation’s top engineering schools. But he didn’t stop there-David has become a LEED Accredited Professional, achieved certification of ASHRAE’s Building Energy Modeling Professional, obtained his Commissioning Authority certification, and passed the Mechanical Professional Engineering Exam at age 24 making him one of the youngest to do so in the country. David has always had the desire to make the world a better place through his innovative visions. He is an active leader in the building community and wants to propel society forward by challenging his fellow millennials, the future leaders of the world.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    Hey David. Great talk...even the awkward unicycle bits! LOL
    In regard to your assertion that we could live net zero energy plus, I would caution anyone who thinks that the excess energy production will always earn you a "check in the mail." Feed-in tariffs (or pay for your excess energy production fed into the grid) were once relatively high here (in Australia), but now have sunk dramatically. The economic reality is that as renewable energy production increases and eventually surpasses the mainline grid power production, the power companies simply cannot afford to pay for electricity that is fed back into the grid. It becomes a net sum loss for them. Some may applaud that and shout 'good riddance' to the power companies, but the [current] fact is that they provide an essential service that simply can't be discarded overnight. Lots of work to do, but stay on it! We're on the right track!

In many developing countries and also in USA people are still burning oil and coal in their homes for heating. It’s 2019. Your ideas aren’t new just maybe new to Americans

    Unfortunately this talk leaves so much unaddressed. There are other problems with solar for certain areas. This sounds like an ad for solar and meet zero homes but doesn't address the costs and necessary steps to going meet zero other than go solar. We need other types of energy production than thermal hydro wind solar etc or else they need to solve the cost benefit challenges for certain regions. Those aren't as feasible or the cost benefit isn't there yet where I'm from. He's right that something needs to be done but misses so much to make this talk actionable.

    David Shad,
    This is a great concept, and I support educating the general population on the idea of building green; however, you failed to mention the challenges. Despite the advances in making green technology more marketable, a lot of building material and equipment required to make a net-zero home are still costly to the average consumer. Showing viewers the potential lifecycle cost savings could have been effective. In addition, builders still need to integrate into this movement. Design details can be more complex for these types of buildings, making the construction challenging; more experienced, competent, and specialty contractors need to enter the industry. Maybe - in theory - we would benefit from the consolidation of the building industry. Lastly, you should have mentioned the prevalent building standards used as "road maps" when building net-zero. We need consumers to understand what it entails to build green, not just the benefits.
    Thanks,
    Michael P. Donovan, Donovan Family of Companies

    While I understand the overall message, the home "design" he showed at 12:28 probably goes against everything he is talking about. Sure it has solar panels, but what orientation are those windows? How many rooms/floor area needs to be heated and cooled throughout the year? How airtight is that building, as I imagine a lot of leakage around those windows and weatherboard construction? Double-car garage? Water intensive landscape? Nah throw some solar panels on the roof and you'll be okay.

    Nuclear energy isn't exactly as you describe. Or at least, it doesn't have to be (i.e. TerraPower). The rest of your info is great but fear mongering other advancements is a bit much. Spot on about the building industry though. I am living through that while trying to talk a builder into doing a passive house for less than half a million... which is absurd. Average people need access to net zero housing.

  • @KJSvitko
    @KJSvitko 4 роки тому

    Drive your electric vehicle with free fuel from your solar panels.
    Net Zero and Passive House construction techniques are the future. Saving energy saves money on utilities.
    Air sealing, great insulation, super efficient heating and air conditioning, LED lighting systems, Triple pane windows and European style triple seal doors, Solar panels with battery storage and an electric vehicle charger in the garage. Air sealing and blower door testing is an under appreciated energy saver. The cost of solar energy has dropped dramatically and continues to fall.

  • @juholaaksonen7455
    @juholaaksonen7455 5 років тому

    This is just childish. With service life of 100 years by avarage for buildings, this route would take a century to saturate the built environment.
    Much better to make sure the energy used in buildings is low emissions. I would suggest nuclear power plus hydro plus solar and wind to do this. Fukushima was about the worse it can go with old reactors and it caused zero radiation related deaths.
    What comes to buildings, some third of the life cycle emissions originate from building material emissions. Go energy efficient, with low emissions materials and long service life powered by clean energy.

    while it is a beautiful and very good idea to make buildings self sufficient i think he is too ready to dismiss nuclear energy. there have been huge innovations in the nuclear field, including thorium which is so good at producing safe energy that a small ball about 2 inches in diameter can produce enough energy for an entire person's *lifetime*. It is far far safer than the alternatives and its halflife is only 300 years(which we know how to manage) compared to the 100,000 years that the old models used. purely based on the data, its impractical to assume we can get by on only solar, wind, and water without nuclear if we are to phase out coal. even in the absolute worst case senarios(ie fukashima) the radiation surrounding the site is still less than an xray and nothing compared to the 7 million deaths caused by pollutants in the air from coal. im not trying to disrespect his ted talk, i just felt i needed to correct his err as nuclear power is going to be absolutely essential if we are to stop climate change. its especially damaging that people aren't yet educated about these new improvements

  • @Earth098
    @Earth098 4 роки тому

    To achieve net zero target, energy efficiency of the building is more crucial than on site renewable energy sources. That means, first the building needs to be designed in a way it consumes minimum possible amount of energy. Unfortunately he didn't put much emphasis on this here.
