I'm from Slovakia and I'm happy that Peter was able to let the world know about us. We've had a good sporting wins for the past couple of years. I'm not into cycling as I used to be, though I support Peter and wish him the best of luck to win this race.
+1. That, and the fact that even with buses, team cars and trucks, cycling's carbon footprint is a fraction of the ridiculous amount needed for F1. Mercedes alone use 27 articulated trucks to get to races, 9 of them for the cars and equipment, 18!!! of them to build a 3-storey motorhome. How absurd is that? I followed F1 avidly for over 40 years but I've given up completely. Instead, I recently got into cycling. I may not be Alejandro Valverde but I can ride basically the same bike as he does and I'm loving every minute of it.
Outstanding breakdown of the bikes and strategy! I followed this race intently back in 2005-2008 and had no idea how much it had progressed technically since then. Thank you so much for this education and charming upgrade to my knowledge!!
Hi guys Quick question: if the pros can use a 42/44 chainring and it is clearly stated “only available for the pros” does that no completely contradict the new rule of 2019 that “all” products that the pros ride must be available for the public to purchase A 42/44 not available should still the same as 3D handle bars that can’t be used anymore
Loving Ollie's Superhero action stance @2:11. He obviously sensed a freebie ( inner chain ring) and transmogrified (See Calvin & Hobbes) into ' Scavenger Man ' 😂
Definitely a strange argument to make indeed. Fortunately for us consumers, the Roubaix versions that come with Ultegra groupsets (Comp/Expert) come with the RX800/RX805 rear mechs. And not because they're cheaper.

Hopefully the shimano setup is available soon! "The UCI also clarified the rules that ensure eqality between athletes when it comes to equipment. The use of prototypes is still authorised, as long as they have been approved by the UCI in advance and that they will be available for purchase by the public within a reasonable timeline - clearly defined - and at a price that is comparable to that of other products of a similar category."
Having used a 90mm front all weathers found the extra depth really helps in crosswinds, not intuitive, it's equal to a disc rear alone in time saved, adds about 1mph, this for elliptical shapes which don't steer you, 'V' shapes steer you in crosswinds, avoid them on the road.
Living in flat old East York’s, I run a 53/42 set up. I feel pro now at last! just got to ditch the mud guards, lose 7kg and ride more than 20miles a time :)
in my opinion (they didn't say it), the main reason to place a 44T inner chainring is to go at the same speed but using the outer cogs, and therefore reduce the chance of jamming the chain between the spokes and the cassette, or to hit the cage of the deraileur with a spoke and destroy everything when hitting hard the cobbles. I still don't understand why they don't step down for the ultegra rx deraileur with the lock system just to reduce the chain slap. it adds just a few grams (less than a double wrap) and when locked, they say it takes away only one watt.
I saw a video on Cycling Tips about bike set ups for this race (2019 PR) - iirc Obrea was using an Ultegra rear derailleur (not sure which one, but they said it was an older model Ultegra).
Not really. I had a headshock F1000 mountain bike back in the day, and I own a Roubaix road bike now. The difference is that the headshock allowed the forks to move up and down while the frame remains still, just like the current shock forks we are all familiar with in mountain bikes, while the Futureshock in the Roubaix allows the bike frame to bounce up and down while the handlebars remain still. The Roubaix frame also has compliance built in the the seatpost mount which allows additional flex and takes some of the jolting out of the seat as well.
Do they do anything for the seats? I don't know if I wasn't paying attention but I would assume sitting in the saddle with vibrations rattling through your pelvis and spreading throughout your body would take a toll.
Victor D true, I love the different bike setups the teams use for roubaix. I was just surprised 1x wasn’t more prevalent since the front chainrings are much closer together for the race anyways
The discussion about the size of the inner ring and the impact on gearing is comical. At no point during the race will a single racer use the inner ring, unless they’re soft pedaling after abandoning for the day. The only thing that makes any sense to me is to get the inner ring as close to the size of the outer ring, given chainstay clearance issues, so that if you drop the chain it will fall onto the inner instead of falling completely off.
I thought everything used in the pro peleton had to be made available for the general public,it seems to me that it depends on who you are,cos team sky had to get rid of an item cos the public couldn't buy it
If you don't mind going back to square taper you can have any 1x / 2x / 3x gearing of basically any chain ring sizes and chainline you want from places like SpaCycles
I thought the UCI rule was that equipment must be available in retail within the same season for it to be allowed in UCI events. So how do they square those 44 tooth inner chainrings?
@@troycollett8540 I want a 42 or 44 on my bike because the region where I live there is at best a bridge over the motorway only. Even the "climbs" I have here average at 2-3% with 200-500m in length. Why should I use a 39 there? its too small.

I live in a very flat part of a pretty flat country, and am seriously considering converting my roadbike (52/36 x 11-28) to 1x11 since I haven't used the inner ring as long as I've owned the bike. A big downside of the drill-quick-wheel-swap is that only the mechanics can swap wheels. Riders can't give their wheel to their teammates. Which could basically screw the favourites if they end up with a flat on one of the cobbles sections where the team cars can't come. I wonder what the teams think about this? Maybe a good question for your quick-wheel-swap video?
