- A lesson I did today for the mod 1 test. One guy had a 650 scooter but I decided to film the Kawasaki ER6n because more people do their test on manual bikes. UPDATE Both guys passed their module 1 test first time.

Another great video. I got my full licence last June. I owe a massive thanks to you Russ I watched all your videos before my training and it really helped, along with good teaching from my riding school and your videos I passed first time. And your videos have giving me a lot of great advice and tips since. Thank you you've helped put another bike on the road along the south coast cheers 👍🏻
What a brilliant instructor - patient, calm and friendly
That’s exactly what I thought 👍👍
I had 1 instructor who was an absolute arse, you knew you were doing well because he wouldn't say a word. All negativity and put downs. Changed schools and now have a brilliant instructor and now after 3 lessons I feel confident on the bike for the first time and have my test tomorrow!
The kind of instructor everyone wants, calm, informative an patient
Even watching this gives me test anxiety and ive already done my tests haha, top work btw
funnyfailer99 agreed, this was a very stressful module to complete, thankfully did mine on my first try but it was terrifying
I was a pretty adequate rider by the time I took my mod 1 - lots of practice! - but totally bricked it :) - passed on 3rd try (foot down on U-turn for the 1st, not reaching high enough speed on emergency stop for the 2nd) hey ho...got it eventually.
I was just thinking the same thing. I’ve got the sweats watching this and I passed 10 years ago.
A instructor that laughs and has a smoothing voice is what every one should have on a test
Possibly the most confidence inspiring voice known to man, wish I'd learnt with you Russ. Cracking, as always.
Woooaaahhh, sent shivers down my spine that did....thank goodness I've got that over and done with. Great video though, brought back, mainly fond, memories.... :0)
Understand with the avoidance about the revving making you seem like you're going faster. On the practices my instructor told me to keep it in a low gear and thrash it. Was never fast enough. When it came to the test went steady on the revs and a gear higher without thinking about it and then went 4 mph through the gates faster than the minimum
Just watching this brings back the butterflies of doing my mod 1, Interestingly enough, I was on a ER-6N, i did my mod 1, then on the last day of my mod 2 training, a day before my test A 4x4 hit me on a mini roundabout and wiped the bike out!. Bike was fucked but i passed my mod 2 the next day 8-)
Even today 4 years later, that swerve avoidance still gives me the butterflies! A trick I was taught was to sing when doing slow manoeuvres. Sounds silly but takes your mind off over thinking especially when nervous.
Very true 😊
I love this guy. Brilliant stuff a true teacher! 😎👍
got my cbt on sunday, been watching your vids all day. brilliant channel keep it up!!
Look at thehe state of that speedgun RCN, lol. I found the mod1 difficult, but fortunately passed both first time DAS last year. Best time of my life getting away from a 125cc.
The best motorcycle channel I could have hoped for. Thanks for all your fantastic tips. Every video of yours is golden. Just starting my motorcycle school, can't wait.
This takes me back. Heart was racing and hands sweating watching this! Mod 1 was the most nervous day of my life! Fantastic video.
Great video for anyone wanting an insight too the mod 1 test. Well done Sir.
Excellent instruction Russ! Watching this brings back some good memories of doing my test. Took me ages to get the U-Turn figured out.
Zero 😂 that made me laugh so much and your reactions for an instructor I’m sure instilled confidence in the rider.
😂 It's about having that connection with the trainee and knowing their sense of humour. ☺
Absolutely the connection can break any nerves and give a rider confidence I’d say. I have my IBT (Ireland) Day 2 on the bike so I’m looking forward to it. Richard Thompson my instructor recommended your channel 😃
@@DeiseRebel good luck and thank Richard for me. ☺
Thanks for the videos. I took my test in 1980 and have no formal training (about to change) so interesting especially the slow riding which I have been trying out in the local car park and has increased my confidence no end.
Well done Nick. Great control. I have to say I probably owe a great deal to RCN and his vids for my pass. Got my 'A' last November and I'm happy as larry with the big bike. Props to CamRider in Sawston, Cambridgeshire. Great bunch of guys and solid tuition. Keep checkin' after you pass ;-) They call it a lifesaver for a reason and they're not wrong.
These are really good instruction videos. I’ve been enjoying watching these as your whole relaxed manner and tone delivers real confidence.
Thanks for uploading and sharing. Wish I was nearer Nottingham for my own DAS !
Thanks.
Brilliant clip , great instructor.
This instructor is really calm and a good explainer - he gives good constructive criticism
You have to be the best instructor on UA-cam, great work buddy
I like this guy I 🙏 I find a friendly instructor for my lessons down in London nothing but positive energy Im feeling through my phone screen from this instructor.
hi mate I've only recently started riding and so not long found your channel..But I have to say it's great even your back catalogue with vids uploaded 5 yrs ago are still very relevant and helpful to new riders like myself. ..The amount of tips and new techniques I've picked up is great and I'm sure will only help me with my full test so thankyou
Still subbed I hope. ☺
Reminds me of my fail. Got it the second time. Foot down on the U turn. Mod 2 I found a lot easier due to my driving exp. Nerves can destroy an otherwise competent rider. Lose the nerves and it becomes easy. But that's easier said than done.
Good lesson and excellent instruction. I’ve watched so many videos on the Mod 1, and have memorised all the techniques. Would LOVE to have a couple of hours in a place like this to put all the study into practice.
My Mod 2 lessons start Monday with test Wednesday. Love your calming nature Russ. Always watching your Mod 2 lessons and thanks. Wishing you well friend.
Hope you've passed now. ☺
@@RoadcraftNottingham yep! 1st time Brother. Thanks for all your advice. Still loving the vids, keep 'em coming.
I did my test about a year ago but love watching video's like this. Wish my test centre would've allowed me to try it on their test area before the real test!
I don't even ride a motorcycle, not sure how I got here but watched a couple (a lot) of your videos in one sitting and your calming, friendly and very informative manner is top notch👌 What an amazing instructor. You've made me want to get on a bike.
Got a bike yet? ☺
I'll be doing my A2 tests this summer. These videos are hugely helpful!
Thanks and good luck with your test.
nice to see you out again Russ :) nice weather must be coming lol
first video I've seen from an instructor perspective. really useful thanks...
Great video and excellent instructor
Fantastic instructor, so calming helpful encouraging and reassuring. Such a great Clip 😉
fantastic video! doing my DAS and got my mod 1 next month.
Good training! this is from Australia
Took 2 attempts to pass mod 1 and this is giving me the nerves again, but kinda fun to watch. Managed mod 2 in 1. Good Video!
Thanks I enjoyed watching that. And I thought it was a difficult test back in 1967 !
Really hope both riders pass their tests first time. Hopefully after all they have to go through these days to get a full licence it means less of them will not be riding like TT racers. Given what they have to go through anyone these days riding with L plates is todays cool for me.
I remember the 70s,from an FS1E to a GT250,and not long after,a plaster cast,if you were lucky.
The old test was the mod1,but not as strict.
Must say I like how professional you are yet you are still positive and give praise. Just did my second CBT and the trainer was horrible he did not shut up the entire day even on the road and his answer to mistakes was "You're going to fail" "I'm going to fail you if...." "You're not going to pass your test", I found it so stressful trying to listen and ride.
My first car driving instructor was an ex army instructor and he was exactly the same, I changed instructor eventually, my first lesson I got in the car and he actually gave me a chance to drive and I drove perfectly, better than I had ever driven before. When I pulled over he asked me the things I did wrong and I told him everything before he had a chance to tell me, I felt although I was teaching myself to drive which gave me much more confidence in my ability.
Sometimes I think it pays to try and understand the rider/driver you are teaching as to what methods of teaching they respond better to. Safe to say I will not be doing my A2 at the school I did my CBT.
bout time you put a video up eh ;) this brings back memories!
You seem really chill, I hope I having someone like you when I do it
yeah really great video. It is so similar to the austrian motorcycle tests. :) Greetings from austria. I love your Motorcycle lesson videos.
your instructor was very good helping you out
Great video lesson!
Feeling very stressed. .....so much to learn and Co ordinate....makes driving my car seem so bloomin easy!
Very good informative video, I'm wanting to do my mod1/2. Few months time
What I like about the course is that it has some solid emphasis on low speed control which applies well to congested traffic. The U.S. MSF course doesn't do enough of that and one of the hardest things for me to become smooth with was low speed crawling around and maneuvering. To this day it's the thing I'm rustiest with at the start of 'riding season' if I take a couple months off in the winter.
They teach "no front brake" here with the wrong emphasis, it's presented as a fear of the front brake due to the huge audience of cruiser riders who are the instructors. They should be teaching that the rear brake is important at crawling speeds and transitioning to a stop, but they don't present it that way. Again a great vid.
what a nice instructor, i hope i will get one like him too
this brought back great memories of my mod 1 👍
Best instructor ever 👌🤝
Wow. Your back 👍
Of the hazard perception, theory test, CBT, mod 1, and mod 2, the only bit I failed on first time was the mod 1, knocking a cone ever over. Target fixation was my issue. Never got to practice much on the MOD1 which is a failing of most schools I think, they’re not ideally set up for it. The on road MOD2 is much better, but unlike Russ some instructors can be very shouty and patronising. That was 5 years ago now and I watched all Russ’s vids. Still look out for your uploads, always good to watch. 👍
Brings back memories. The bikes weren't as modern or as well maintained as yours though Russ!
Nice to see you back very good vid
Your videos have been a great source to my training and riding A1
Thankyou. ☺
done module 1 passed with fly colours thanks great video
I never had to do any of this when I got bike license (In South Australia) which must be close to 40 years ago. Self taught in the traffic from day 1 and the riding test was basically a ride around the block and providing indicators and brake light were used and not a danger to any one else you passed. It's a lot better now with all the rider training we now have but I doubt I could do half the stuff I saw in this clip while riding my ST1100A. It's taken a little while to do but I can now do a U-turn with my partner on board and I can reverse my bike and trailer out of a parking space if I can't find a ride through space. Stuff you never learn in any course.I've also picked up some tips from your videos since I first saw one a few years a go.
Good video Russ. I never had to do a mod 1, but it does not look too difficult. I can see why it is so easy to fail on the swerve test though. That and the dreaded nerves.
Excellent instruction. 😊
tarmacscratcher UA-cam.. Thanks buddy, especially coming from another seasoned instructor. ☺
I did my Mod1 on those Kawasaki er6n... lovely bike
It doesn't get any better in Nottingham!! Keep up the good work fella.
RJH Motorbike Training... Thanks buddy, hope things are well with you. ☺
All good fella, I must come over and meet you in person. I love your channel btw :-)
RJH Motorbike Training.. Let me know when you're available and we'll have a nice ride out to Matlock. ☺
Will do Russ, look forward to it :-)
I wish you were my instructor.
Nice Rolex btw :D
great vid buddy! doing my mod1 training today :) hopefully my teacher will be as easy going as you haha
Great video
So glad you are putting more helpful videos up. I have only been riding four months and hope to do my full licence sometime this year, I will start lessons soon and this will boost my knowledge and confidence loads, thanks. Just wish I done it twenty years ago :)
Did y'all pass Buddy?
@@h7283 I did mate 👍 I have a mod one video I put up at the time too if you want to check it out too.
@@HalfdeadRider Great to hear that, I sure will.
I have the MOD2 coming up soon.
@@h7283 On Mod2 jus try and stay relaxed, ride to the speed limits and listen to instruction, and check all road signs to prevent mistakes. Good luck with it mate 👍
@@HalfdeadRider Thanks 👍
7:35 I think this advice is really great because I struggled getting up to speed because it sounded so fast. In the end I just went for it and I passed but I think going into 3rd gear would have helped me.
Where was the man with the clipboard? Nice to see this level of proficiency as a starting point to what we all love.
I've got my DAS training for my A2 next month and I'm bricking it for the mod 1.
Haha, good job there isn't a time limit, cause I took a while doing my maneuvering XD I did it the walk it back push it round forward and walk it back into the bay way.
Good instructor
Just passed my mod 1 “ thanks to your great video
Passed my mod2 on 13-03-18. What a relief. Mod 1 failed once on the emergency braking, 2nd time asked for bike with ABS. Waiting for my next pay day to put a deposit for a ninja 650.
This brought back some nerves even though I did my test way before the test changed - I do think however bikes should not have any rider aids during training.
hi there. really enjoy your videos, very helpful. I would really like to see you do some vids on using cruisers.. ideally kawasaki vn800! including gear changing etc. thanks!!!
He is a Legend as He has 'failed' so WE won't have to.
Sounds like a grate instructor
Come back, we need your training videos!
I think I know who I'll be booking my DAS with!
I done my mod 2 in August. I miss my mod 1+2 lessons. Strange but I wish I could do them again. I'd like a weekend job to help others pass.
My foot hit a cone on the 30 mph swerve exercise. But because the cone only rocked and didn't fall over I passed haha
This is insane. Imagine how easy mod 1 would be after this. I'm in a tiny gravel filled car park with an instructor that hardly gives a shit lol. Wish me luck. Nice training.
Brilliant .
Good video, even though I have passed it now makes me wonder how!
What a great instructor my instructor just gives me dirty looks and tells me to go away I'm pissing him off...got my test in 4 weeks your videos are my training thank you....
Good luck
I wish I got to have a practice beforehand!! I never had a go round any cones just had to turn up on the day and do it hahah, somehow passed though
Holy crap this is useful! Subbed.
Still subbed? ☺
@@RoadcraftNottingham I certainly am!
When it comes to the manual handling, I was taught to push back in a straight line, then go forward in an arc around to the other side, then reverse back in a straight line into the box. I found it much easier than trying to push it backwards in an arc. Matey made it look pretty easy though to be fair. :p
GwresYnKernow.... Yes, if people struggle with the one in the video, I show them your method. It's pointless to teach both if they're OK with the 1st one. ☺
When i studied in birmingham 12 years ago, i had been visited Nottingham to see the famous drummer. whenever see your video, really miss the air of England. (:
Keep updating your story in youtube...please..bros....^^
I've got a full license but I still watched this video
Watching the wannabes with the struggle always gives a warm smug feeling inside.
Was this at Colwick Russ, I seem to recall that blue building
Got my mod 1 tomorrow afternoon. The bits I'm most struggling with are the U turns, the figure of 8s and (weirdly) the manual handling because my instructors bike is so bloody heavy!
Just don't go too slowly, common mistake. You won't get marked down for going too quickly apart from the slow ride. Good luck
most car drivers dont use enough revs a lot of the time , its the noise ,,, a glance at the tacho is very educational ,,,
The test centre I did my mod 1 on (Kitt's Green, Birmingham) had a little kerb next the the u-turn. I like to think it's psychological encouragement not to cock it up so you don't end up in the ditch.
Very cool of the test centre letting you use the facility for practice.
I thought most instructors take you to the actual test centre for practice.
Yeah, they don't test on weekends, so if you've got a lesson at the weekend they usually let you into the actual test centre. At least that's what happens down our way. Assume it's the same everywhere.
Coldfin9er Local test centre near me let you use the mod 1 site. I practised my mod 1 on the Saturday and Sunday and did my mod 1 Monday. Mod 2 Wednesday passed first time.
mine was in a car park about 1/3 the size of these test sites so when i got there to do the test it was amazing to have all that room!
Yeah mine was exactly the same when i did it, hired the test centre out on the Saturday a few weeks before the test. Did the entire day in the pissing rain, gave me a lot of confidence on the day.
Great Channel. Found it very helpful. Just wondering what your thoughts are on the whole, slipping the clutch and dragging the back brake on slow manoeuvres. My instructor is teaching this method but I'm not finding it great. Thanks.
Sorry for the delay, don't like dragging rear brake, burns clutches out if done wrong.
Got my mod 1 for a1 license in 2 days. Watching these videos makes me nervous.
I passed my CBT about 3 weeks ago and I already want to do my Mod 1 just so i can have a go on a bigger bike :D
I hope you've passed by now. ☺
trainer sounded top class
This makes me so nervous for my test next week 😂
Ypu pass?
