  • I finally got around to installing the ARB Safari snorkel. It turned out great but it was not an easy or flawless install...

Well done for still being able to sort it out, and sharing this. If that was me - there would have been an R-rated version (for language and flying tools) of the video on UA-cam! 😀

This is exactly what I needed, especially the mistakes.
I have an ARB snorkel (previous owner bought it and never installed it). I have been hesitant to install it because I don't have the template, and I needed to see exactly how forgiving (or not) the process is.
So never worry about showing your mistakes in the videos. often those are most useful part of the video.
watching some guy with 30 years experience doing it only helps so much, when it is your first time.

We did the Dobinson's snorkel on our 4Runner and love it. One of my best friends actually has the ARB and they fit and form the same way we were both very surprised.

A handy tool to have laying around is a set of carbide burr’s. A cheap set from amazon actually work really good. They would make quick work of cleanly rounding out that hole.

My jeep buddies think my snorkel is goofy. To trigger them, before I climb over the same obstacle they do, I tighten hose clamp on snorkel and say "ok, now its ready "..🤣 when I climb rocks or whatever, I say "good thing I have a snorkel "...

I think your concept is sound, by watching Australian videos,
I learned that they install those not for water, but dust.
I don t intend on doing this mod, but if I do,
I will paint it silver like the bumpers.
too much black parts for my taste.
it looks good and pro, just for that, it might be worth it.
if I get money and repaint the whole thing,
I will probably reduce the amount of colors by painting the roof blue,
eliminating the white and seal the roof cracks.
    good show!

I don t have the intention to do this mod,
but if I did, I d probably paint it the same silver as the bumpers.
it looks good and pro, and just for that, it might be worth doing it some day.
in the future, I intend to reduce the black color on mine,
and repaint mostly silver, bumpers, trims...
if I get more money, maybe reduce the number of colors too,
and paint the roof blue at the same time that I reseal the roof cracks.

I have always seen these as macho gimmicks. Do they work? If so, why is the snorkel facing forward? Is there a real benefit to all of this expense and work??

    • @offroadhub.official
      @offroadhub.official  3 роки тому

I'm not sure how macho they are. They face forward because that where the most air is coming from. The biggest benefit is that the air is cleaner up high. You can see where the air intake is in the video, there is a ton of dust and even mud down there. My air filter stays cleaner now, so yes, I'd say it works. For water, it will make it more difficult for the engine to get a sudden influx of water.
Snorkels aren't perfect, but nothing really is. We all do some modifications that have marginal benefits. Snorkels are just something some people like having, and they offer some benefit, marginal or otherwise.

HALF the FJs in Dubai have snorkels if they off-road in the dunes!!! The most destructive thing you can get in your engine is SAND - it wouldn’t kill it suddenly, but over a year or two off-roading in the dunes you will noice a BIG reduction of power. It did that to my first FJ, which I never put a snorkel on - and regretted that decision the next year. I eventually rolled that FJ, and my new-to-me replacement IS getting a snorkel!!!
