- Driving through deep water can be required when overlanding but you need to keep dry air flowing to your engine. This step by step instruction video will show you how to install an ARB snorkel on a Toyota FJ Cruiser. www.lastgreatroadtrip.com/2009...
Drilling a whole in a perfectly good FJ Cruiser can be a little daunting, but this snorkel install video will give you the confidence to turn a Snorkel installation mod an DIY project. - Авто та транспорт
I remember cutting on my tacoma. It hurts at first but the peace of mind you get is awesome when you hit those deep water crossings.
The quality of the video is super good, especially since the video is from 2009. who else is watching in 2020
thx
Thank you for the feed back. I get what you mean about the radio... just have something in the back ground keeps all the senses involved when there is gaps in the narration. Thank you very much for the input. I appreciate it.
Very nicely presented. Clear and precise instructions,
Cheers
Sweet job! Love your videos I have already used a few of them to help me with my FJ.
Thx... Glad they helped.
Thanks... glad you liked it. Hope you're having that after drilling holes into your rig :-) and have another for us!
That was sick!!!!! I cant wait to get a snorkel on my jeep
@homewright2010 From Land Rovers to Jeeps to Land Cruisers and FJs, snorkels are used to aid in fording deeper water crossing. Desert convoys and racers use snorkels to pull air into the engine from (hopefully) a less dusty location up at the roof line.
Good and accurate work.
Thanks for the video. I just got a snorkel for my Xterra and am nervous about installing it. I guess once I drill the first hole the rest will be easier. It's just working up the courage for that first one.
Glad you liked it.
great suggestion! thank you
Great video!!!
Its actually really painful to watch that hole being drilled on the fender. Still bothers me and its not even my car, lol. What relieves me is that it turned out great, and it looks factory made. Great job, guys 🙂👌
Kevin Diaz haha... kind of like jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. Thx for the note
Good video, well put together.
Sometimes that would work, but sometimes the water your trying to cross is deeper than that allows. This is my FJC in this video, and we tested the snorkel several times crossing water as high as the hood line, never had a problem doing so with the snorkel on.
@airoscar You can tape off the area and use some rattle can (or a q-tip and some scratch cover-up) to cover the bear metal. There really isn't that much exposed so it wont take much. The area is covered by the snorkel so the job does not have to perfect. Just keep the over spray to a minimum. Good luck to you.
Good question... I discussed the issue of water flying into the snorkel head with ARB and they said the design of the head prevents water from getting in and down the snorkel. In addition if you are in a hard monsoon you can rotate the head so it faces toward the rear further reducing the possibility of water entering the snorkel.
As for price and installation since that changes check with Metal Tech (google them for a URL) for the latest discounts and specials.
@harrygutterballs Glad it helped. Thanks for letting us know.
@saminalla good tips... thanks for the note
Looks great and I would love to install one. I built one for my Cj-7 years ago just having a hard time drilling a hole that big into my fj lol.
it is a big commitment... :-)
@tripple222222 Thanks glad you like it... the song is titled "Cantina Blues" check the credits at the end of the video for artist and where you can find it.
Thanks for the note... post a picture up on our facebook page when your done so we can see... Good luck on your build.
enjoyed cool vid and tune
Top upload, love this professional install! Hats off to you guys, nothing better than seeing a job done "THE RIGHT WAY"!!!Saw another install video before this one which left me laughing and gasping at how bad and back yard they did it. Couple of clowns with no idea. (Paslar something)
great informative video
@CEOTerminator Yup they've done a few :-) but taping off everything is the key.
Thank you appreciate it.
thank you guys
You would be hard pressed to find a better engineered tube bumper. 1 3/4” .120 wall tube steel engineered to deflect objects off to the side while protecting the front. If you're looking for lots of metal go with a shell type bumper like ARB. We've run several bumpers (shell and tube) and now run the Metal Tech tube bumper exclusively on our off road adventures. if you want light weight performance this is the tube bumper. Check out our bumper talk video.
@fastedos1969 Good point... thanks for the comment.
@Modded25 Good Question... Take a look at ARB's website and they layout the thought and engineering that went into the snorkel. Like you the first time I saw the set up I had to scratch my head and read through their docs.
"Now that you've recovered from the trauma.."
@Modded25 I believe since it is the air intake... when you are driving the air gets forced into it like a funnel pushing the air into the intake as compared to shielding it from the air if it was facing backwards... I don not know this for sure but that's what I think.
@Coshitamosha8 there is some cutting involved with the Bushwackers. I don't know of a template but there must be one out there.
Wondering how well the tube holds up to going through brush and branches? I have had the mirrors damaged even though they swung back so curious if anyone has experienced issues with the snorkel. I am wanting to connect it to the TRD CAI that I have.
@Markobreezy thanks, glad you liked it... send us some pics of your jeep when your done so we can post them on our facebook page.
@punchmaster123 Sorry don't know on a Bronco... might want to check ARB or Pirate4x4 to see if someone makes one for your rig.
thank you.
I like that drilling music. What is that?
Anything is possible but you are replacing a fender and the A pillar. This is definitely a mod that takes commitment.
A template sure eases some of the anxiety.
wow!! this helps a lot but,,, i still have a question,,, I have the snorkel and Bushwacker fender how do I put 'em together???
Awesome
good vid
you should also watch our Scuba Mod video.
@redbull9679 Sorry, got nothing since we've not done any on mods with our turn signals. google fjcruiserforum and check that out for any howtos. good luck
Is there a backflow shut-off valve in case the FJ tips over in a stream rut by mistake?
Hate to say this on such an old video but snorkels aren't for water crossings.. it's to keep clean, dust free air from getting in your intake whhen driving on dirt.
What would you do about the alternator? Is it ok to drive into water with it uncovered? From your experience?
@rusty78364 but doesnt that mess with the fuel to air ratio? to much air? and wouldnt you think that things like rain will get sucked in
@lastgreatroadtrip Hey Man i bought these turn signal lights for my fj cruiser 2008 but i dont know how to install them. Do you have any video of you uninstalling them or something Plzz i would really appreciate it .. Thanks.
with the intake facing forward like that and you decide to seal up those little holes with silicone, water will have no way to get out when you're driving through a huge rain or snow storm, .
Out here in California, 1.75 .120 is industry standard.
Style and design is just outdated.
Great video on snorkel install.
@nathoniel01 yup I'm with you guys.... this mod is not for the faint of heart. A lot like jumping out of a perfectly good airplane :-)
Just like ripping off a bandage... :-) Thanks for the comment.
This guy is a PRO, most of us would damage the body on drilling the first hole!
"This is where we separate the men from the boys," says the owner, as he has someone else install a snorkel for him.
Kevin108 Hard to do the work and film so others can DIY. BTW: Not our truck. :-)
Last Great Road Trip I was just being a smartass. Good video!
@koolguy412 thanks
My kit is missing the little plastic inserts anyone know were i can buy some
why does the top piece face forward and not back it would make more sence if it faces back so dust and dirt doenst get sucked in and rain stays out
Can somebody tell me why those big holes for such small screws???? I am about to install mine and it doesn’t make sense to me.
We don't make the safari snorkel system we just explain how to install it based on manufacture's requirements :-)
What front bumper is on the Fj? It's pretty cheesy for a tube bumper
TRAUMA!!! Yep one day but not today on mine. LOL
Question.
Isn't there a risk to get the alternator with water and mud?
Should it be incased somehow?
Most parts can handle getting wet... not staying submerged... for long times. This is a truck not a uboat :-) The real problem are the belt pulleys. The pulley bearings are not sealed so mud and grim gets into them and if not cared for will begin to squeak and squeal until you replace them.
is it necessary to remove the intake duct from inside the fender or could you just drill through it?
+dave rendell yes you will need to remove the fender skirt and OEM fresh air duct. You can read the write-up that goes with the video at: www.lastgreatroadtrip.com/4x4-tech/how-to-modifications/the-return-of-scuba-steve/
Why do the holes to mount it have to be so big 16mm is perddy big
I'm with you LosAngeles0911
Name of song anyone please.. Thanks
Good fg
what does a place like that charge to install for you???
shanejpt give metal tech 4x4 a call and ask but labor in your area may differ.
Oh alright thanks ;)
You supposed to use Centre punch before drilling mate
im kinda worried if the drill suddenly slides of and extends the trauma
Min Es the tape helps there and you punch the drill bit location to keep the hole saw from wondering. But it still feels wrong to drill wholes into a perfectly good fender. :-)
👍
center punch...
Thanks... Putting holes is a perfectly good fender... not for the squeamish ha ha
كنت بركبه بس هونت دام فيه لعب في الرفرف وجسر التنده
so what if I have a fender flare?
+Raynorrules might want to hunt that down in the blue room (fjcruiserforums.com/) pretty sure they have a few threads on that.
Raynorrules I saw this video looks like they just dont put one on that fender. Still looks good. ua-cam.com/video/qa1Rvb-aUWA/v-deo.html
Well in this case I would have someone rip the band-aid off for me. I couldn't do that lol. I only want to see the final product.
Doesn’t water get it the air filter houses I don’t Think that’s water sealed tight
there are two little drain holes in the FJ Cruiser air filter housing. You can seal them up but no one i know of has. Crossing water at a steady pace creates a bow wave that prevents water from filling your engine bay. Unless you're doing long deep crossing the little drain holes are not going to be an issue. These set ups wont turn your truck into a U-boat but they will help you cross deeper water.
@Doctorknow956 ha ha ha
what about the rivets?
Not sure what your asking about? You remove the liner and put it back when your done, held in with plastic fasteners you reuse.
no I was talking about the three rivets in the upper arm, that was not covered in the video. It's okay we drove to town and bought a rivet gun and it's done. I just wish I knew that beforehand so I would have been ready.
Any one noticed the 2 small filters at 5:50
***** not sure the filters you're referring too
think he means the red ones by the hoodstrut
Yes, he moved the factory breathers up higher and changed them to that style. I am sure he also did the same thing to the rear diff breather also that is underneath the vehicle. I moved my rear one inside my gas door area. This is done for the same reason as the snorkel to keep water from getting in.
لاااااا ضاق صدري والله
ha ha That's what you get out of this... :-)
My 4x4 is too nice to drill all of those holes in my fender. F.ck that. Good video though.
I agree
How nice is your engine? You may misunderstand the utility of a snorkel.
Looks to tall, noisy on hwy? The right tools are the secret.
Shit that’s making me nervous lol
haha
It sounds like Abraham Lincoln.
Damm...if i tried doing that to my FJ ...I d screw it up...and my FJ would drown.
destroy my fender for this. yeah right
Never buy a used car with this kind of intake mod or you will regret tossing your hard earned money down the toilet.
well you're certainly entitled to your opinion on snorkels. Some folks love them and others not so much.
This is a joke, right? Couldn't you just drive slow thru the water and avoid seven holes in the side of your car?
???
