How A Snorkel Can Damage Your Vehicle

  • In this one I remove my ARB Safari snorkel from my Toyota FJ Cruiser and tell you all the reasons you may or may not want a snorkel on your 4x4 off road vehicle. A snorkel may be safe for your vehicle if your style of four wheeling leans more in the overlanding direction, but if rock crawling is your idea of fun a snorkel may not be for you.

    But if I take my snorkel off, no one will believe my street only lifted truck on 37s is actually a hard-core overlanding rock crawling dune jumping river fording full bodied Tennessee hill killer.

    I totally hear that you're not anti-snorkel. But looking at some of the trails and rock crawling you do. I think you would have damaged all those fenders/panels if the snorkel wasn't on there anyway. it might have saved more damage than it created. Just a thought.

    • @WhiteCavendish
      @WhiteCavendish Рік тому +6

      I agree; I suspect it probably saved more damage than it caused by being squishier than the metal body panels. The biggest benefit of snorkels is indeed keeping dust out of the engine, with deep water crossings being a secondary consideration, but as someone who has drowned his 4x4, I don't recommend discounting that benefit!

    We went with a snorkel cause here in the Texas Panhandle area with dust and dirt get to be crazy and it helps keep the filter cleaner. Also had a friend recommend to turn the intake around backwards it helps reduce it even more. Backwards it also helps with you get a really heavy wet snow so it doesn't clog up as easily. Now If I was stirring up a lot of my own dust then it turned forward would be better.

      They’re called brush bars. Though they are used for rock areas as well. There are different styles you can use depending on what type of off-roading your into. They would of definitely helped in the situation you showed in that creek you were in. Pros less panel damage. Cons vehicle is now slightly wider plus the added weight. So tight tracks a bit harder to traverse. If your touring ( I think you guys call it over landing. Correct me if I’m wrong ) then fuel consumption goes up due to added weight and more wind drag. They are well worth it though if your into those hard tracks.

  • @Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent

    Personally I believe a Truck especially one that's used for fun and or is quite old and been well used should look like well.. A truck. A little beaten here and there only means that truck has experience.. I kinda like the look of a truck looking a little weathered.

    This is where I am going to disagree. I have already hit one tree with my snorkel and it did require that I replace the fender. But I have also been windshield wiper deep in water a few times. The damage from the tree pales in comparison to the damage my engine would have taken sucking in water. The upsides still outweigh the downsides for me.

    • @offroadhub.official
      @offroadhub.official  3 роки тому +3

      I don't think we disagree. I made the point that if a snorkel saves your engine from water just once, it was worth having. 👍

      I've considered it. It's just a matter of supporting tubing out in front of the fender. It would require a pretty long stretch of tubing that doesn't have anything behind it, so it may not be very strong.

    So here's another funny thing. A guy (me) walks into a Toyota dealer parts store, after watching Ken bend several tie rods. I order a inter and outers tie rod for a spare. I go to pick them up. And he hands me 2 outers. I had to explain what the difference is between inter and outers. At the dealership!! All you can do is laugh. So let us see if they get it right this time.

    It seems that the design for the FJ could be better. Why not design it to insert in the fender earlier and then run down to where it goes into the engine bay. At this point, this seems non-sensicle. The damage is already there. Just chalk it as trail rash.

  • @Crashryding

    It’s possible to fit a Cone prefilter, on top of the snorkel, giving you a nice flutter when off the gas. These are the same as you would fit to a JDM CAR or a anything that you put a cold air intake on, they sound good, give the turbo extra air and many people run them on pipes in the roll bars in their trophy trucks or side by sides etc.
    I’ve fitted on as my main filter to many a JDM performance turbo and seen a benefit. (Eg WRX, Skyline GTS-TT, R33 GTR. Even to a Mazda Familia/323 GTX-R 1.8 inline 4 Turbo boosting almost 25psi)
