The Empire's fatal flaw, like most empires, is believing in their own invulnerability and superiority. I think Lucas drew a lot of inspiration from ancient Rome when he made the first screenplay. One would need to fly so very close to a ship that the risk of collision for a non jedi is massive. Luthen is no jedi (despite being very interesting and a great character). Yep! I remember when I first saw this scene for the first time. My jaw dropped and stayed open. I backed it up and watched the whole scene again. So well done!
First time seeing this I thought, "Oh crap, they're going to kill him off!" but I was pleasantly surprised at what happened instead. "Andor" is the best thing that's happened to Star Wars in many years. I can't wait until season two (probably 2025 because of the writer and actor strikes that pushed everything back many months).
10/10 need a show just about Luthen Rael at this point. Stellan did a stellar job in every scene he was in. The goading he did to use the tracker's full strength for his countermeasures to be more effective, then that exit out of there was just *chef kiss*.
I don't think the show is going to make him more of a focus, nor should it. Like the other characters, including Cassian, he's best when not featured 100% of the time.
I thought that initially, until I realised he was using the Arrestor Class as his protector so the Tie Fighters were kind of flying into the sun, couldn't really see him and if they fired at him they risked hitting the Arrestor Class. Great strategic move - a real professional - we haven't really seen Luthen's full capabilities yet - can't wait to the next series.
It's a pretty good tactic, even if the tie fighters shots won't make it through the shields of the arrestor class the pilots will refrain from firing. The tie fighters lack shields, but they have string enough weapons to do a lot to a craft like Luthens.
@@amsfountain8792 Well probabaly the other stuff in financial more successfull. Andor was very expensice in production... Lower quality longer shows probably make most money... most of the time...
The board at Disney would rather utilize research groups to influence their scripts according to Bob Iger. He tried to dismantle the research groups when he was first hired but was unsuccessful. If you get a chance look up Kennedy’s conversation with Gilroy before Andor was made. She was asking him for advice and he told her what was wrong with their shows and she basically said that it was out of her hands. She circle back to him about a year later seemingly after pulling some strings or getting the money needed to operate with real sets and without the volume
Yeah he'd be one of the darker Bonds, more of a Craig than a Moore, but he's definitely got the skills and the capacity to be ruthless when it's required of him.
Luthen was also like taunting the Commander by buzzing its bridge on its close fly-by. In fact, if Luthen had activated his giant lightsabers at that point, he could have sliced open the bridge and got the Commander sucked out into the vacuum of space. I think it could be Luthen's way of telling the Commander that he was actually that close to death but spared on that day.
Yeah, that could actually be... but i think that the shields of the Cantwell-Cruiser would be to strong for the laser and he, Luthen, knew that. both possible 🤔
I LOVE how the Imperials are written and performed in Andor. Clipped, understated for the most part, disciplined. You get the sense they are trained and real.
What I love about this scene is that it does something different with a Star Wars dog fight. There are actual tactics employed like using the tractor beam against the ship
I like how there is less fast-paced shots and "dramatic" acting and dialogue. Instead, there's shots that linger and let the characters breathe and feel. This is a true masterclass how an action scene can be engaging and suspenseful yet give full characterizations of the parties involved and how they perceive the events!
Honestly, the best part of the whole series is that it focuses on the war in the stars. I don't even remember anything having to do with the force in the show.
Couldn’t agree more! That monologue with Lonnie still gives me chills. In my opinion this was probably the best Star Wars show yet, at least in the sense that it showed in such a dark and gritty way how truly dangerous it was to stand against the empire at that time.
This scene is so full of details and little nuances, even the actors we probably won't see again like this obnoxious commander are all in the role. Best SW show made. Andor Season 2 is a duty of Disney.
I am fascinated by the fact the damaged dish debris didn’t banish or just fall away, since it’s in the vacuum of space and it was not explosion based. It just lazily floated in place and even the two tie fighters the plume of smoke just stayed in place. Such a neat detail
And when Luthen gunned his engines, the Imp ship lurches forward a bit. That's a great touch. They'd never properly treated tractor beams as a sort of tow cable or fishing line before.
This is one of three scenes depicting Luthen as a pure badass. The first being the first blaster fight escape with Andor, the second being the Saw Gerrera meet up.
@omarbaba9892 But I just don't care about any of the characters involved in the Acolyte. Just meaningless swinging of lightsabers. This action scene isn't just there to look cool, it actually subtly tells us about Luthen and the empire and how they both operate.

I'm glad they went back to the old school, 1970s style computers instead of "modern" OLED panels and such. Star Wars is a different universe. Technology developed differently in this galaxy and in some anachronistic ways, but it just feels true to Star Wars for me. They take being able to travel through hyperspace for granted because they've been doing it for so long, have sentient machines, yet you won't seem them using a laptop or playing Xbox. Energy weapons are actually not ideal in space, but it's just how things developed in this galaxy so everyone uses them. It's like an alternate take on what human history might have been if we were exposed to advanced technology and aliens early on. Cool to see kinetic weapons being used too (or "countermeasures" as he calls them)
Uh, energy weapons in space would actually be IDEAL, due to not needing to haul physical ammo, for projectile weapons, or full up missile, which are fun bundles of joy that want to detonate. and take up a lot of room. Energy weapons, on the other hand, only require a power feed, cooling system, and a aiming method, and as long as the power holds out, you can fire.
What I love about Rogue One was just how much Star Wars "flavor" it has. This scene is the same. It really has the Star Wars feel about it. Luthen Rael's haulcraft has that battered "Millennium Falcon" aesthetic and this scene for me is up there with the escape from Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back. So cool. I love the Imperial ship design too, which was one of Ralph McQarrie's concepts I think?

Yep! I remember when I first saw this scene for the first time. My jaw dropped and stayed open. I backed it up and watched the whole scene again. So well done!
I agree… you can feel his nonchalant skill permeate and I do feel he has the force. He is like a mix of Han Solo and Obi Wan.
@@timthorson52 very well said
That little last fly by past the bridge, just to rub it in a bit more, EPIC 👊
Yes! Just Starwars :)
Callback to Empire Strikes Back.
scene is only a week old and might be my favorite starwars space fight scene
This scene was exceptionally badass, another reason why this show changed my perspective on the previous shows
See, this proves Disney CAN make a good show, they just choose not to most of the time.
I fear they take control of future Andor seasons.
And without the Skywalkers or Jedi or Force magic being involved too
Luthien is James Bond in the star wars universe lol
haha yesss he is
Yeah he'd be one of the darker Bonds, more of a Craig than a Moore, but he's definitely got the skills and the capacity to be ruthless when it's required of him.
Maybe in the action department but his speeches and mastery of language are more George Smiley.
It's the gadgets and combat tactics that are Bond like. His ship is like what bond would have if bond was in star wars.
@@karlreinke Which only makes him more dangerous. He combines elements of two of media's greatest spies.
at 3:22 - The look from the face of a man who is thinking , "We are SOOOO f----d !!! "
Yeah ol'boy Dark is gonna to bring sum darkness his way 😅
Luthen was also like taunting the Commander by buzzing its bridge on its close fly-by.
Also, he's just trying to escape, not pick a fight
The Imperial officer in charge is a Navy CAPTAIN but we get what you mean.
@@levico1 Where not strong enough to protect the pulling device (however it should be called).
Bruh it’s literally just to look cool it’s not that deep
I LOVE how the Imperials are written and performed in Andor. Clipped, understated for the most part, disciplined. You get the sense they are trained and real.
Well put! Agree 100%
I was just watching the show thinking it was good overall, but this scene alone is perfection. More entertaining than the 3 sequels combined.
Using chaff as an anti tractor beam countermeasure is next level
This scene in my opinion sold me on Luthen.
Now I have another series to add to my list of things to watch
The look on that Imperial Commander's face knowing he just got served by a rebel is priceless!!
He's a Captain commanders don't get ship command
What I love about this scene is that it does something different with a Star Wars dog fight. There are actual tactics employed like using the tractor beam against the ship
This is so satisfying 😅 could watch it once a day. I love how Luthen stays so calm and on focus. What a real Gangster!
Between this and the "sacrifice" monologue, Luthen has had the two best scenes in all of Star Wars.
Couldn’t agree more! That monologue with Lonnie still gives me chills. In my opinion this was probably the best Star Wars show yet, at least in the sense that it showed in such a dark and gritty way how truly dangerous it was to stand against the empire at that time.
EVERYTHING!
That fondor droid is like a male siri who listens and understands your words correctly
Hahaha if siri would be as good as the fonder droid…
One of the best cinematic scenes I have ever seen. Well done
The best action scene from entire Aldor season. He did them dirty :D
To quote Joker from the '88 Batman... "Where does he get those wonderful toys!?"
nice one
Is this the first time we've seen a kinetic weapon used in space combat in Star Wars? 🤔
I think it might be honestly. Absolutely genius
@@counterfeit4450 I don't want it to, but the Holdo Maneuver should count.
Aside from deliberate ramming and the few times we see ships or bombers fire torpedoes, yes.
Yes
This show is a masterpiece. It set the bar so high every SW show I've seen since is just a saturday morning cartoon.
This scene is so full of details and little nuances, even the actors we probably won't see again like this obnoxious commander are all in the role. Best SW show made. Andor Season 2 is a duty of Disney.
He's a Captain to command a ship or any grade you need to be a Captain or higher
This scene alone is right up there with the best of ESB and ROTJ. Even better than the battle scenes from Rogue One. Superbly directed.
This gave me chills like the first space battle in the TV show The Expanse
This szene always brings a smile on my face. Especially the rotating "laser sword" weapon.
So TIL that spinning is indeed a good trick after all.
Anakin: first time?
One of the best scenes in the entire series.
I've never seen this show before but that scene was insane
bro watch the show its good
Masterpiece of a scene.
This Scene alone is better than Whole Mandalorian Season 3
Most badass scene ever in Star wars history!!
It really is; not saying there aren’t other good ones, but this one… incredible!!!
@@levico1 I would say this one is in line with Vader hallway scene in Rogue One
Every spaceship nerd got a new favourite ship in his list after that scene. ;) We really need more technical details for Wookieepedia.
Yes!
This is one of three scenes depicting Luthen as a pure badass. The first being the first blaster fight escape with Andor, the second being the Saw Gerrera meet up.
This scene STILL gives me goosebumps watching it. Absolutely epic detail and drive into thise work.
the **how do i explain this damn** at the end lol
haha xD
Enjoy this scene 100x more than any of the lightsaber duels disney have put out
That recent acolyte duel has had some of the best choreography in the franchise ever. As well Ashoka has some pretty good duels
@omarbaba9892 But I just don't care about any of the characters involved in the Acolyte. Just meaningless swinging of lightsabers. This action scene isn't just there to look cool, it actually subtly tells us about Luthen and the empire and how they both operate.
@@Here4Hummus what I’m saying is that the choreography is amazing and is honestly better than a fair amount of the prequel duels. I don’t think the show is good but a bad show can have good concepts so appreciate how well the choreography team did
Sadly most Disney Star Wars is made for the type of person in your pfp.
@@emilianomartorell3587 ha ha not wrong
2:12 I think the inspiration for this trick is from the Thrawn-Trilogy from Timothy Zahn from the 1990s. In one of the books, Luke uses a similar trick against Thrawns Stardestroyer.
@@TOFKAS01 oh wow interesting
The ONE bright spot in Star Wars. Waiting for season 2.
Immensely satisfying scene. I can't wait for the next season.
Same!!!
That little Maverick style buzz of the tower. That's what makes it.
I love the imperial commanders calm speaking
I rewatched this scene like 10 times when I saw it first, it wasn't just great, it was JAW DROPPING
Level 99 free to play player vs level 10 paying player.
I love this scene. It makes me think about one man against the machine, about preparation and wits. I love it!
This was my favorite scene of the whole season. I thought for sure he was done for, or a double agent who was about to be revealed to the audience. But instead this old man pulls off a more badass maneuver than Solo could ever hope to.
Did anyone else notice how this ships are ACTUALLY IN ORBIT, and not just floating up there. That’s the coolest shit I’ve seen in Star Wars in years. Makes me feel like I’m actually in space watching this unfold. Surreal doesn’t begin to describe.
yeah very awesome what they did with Andor. All scenes got this touch of perfect cinematic star wars as we want it. Acolyte was shit fe
I couldn't control myself when this scene popped on
Luthen is such a different kind of rebel soldier. He's cunning, calculated, driven. Even if you dont like the series, you'll like the chatacter.
Yeah, I don't think that Captain's going to be getting a commendation in the immediate future.
😂
I love how absolutely disconnected he looks while he's doing it. "look what you made me do"
Even at 3:30, this is one of the most suspenseful, creative, and fun ship-battle sequences in any Star Wars movie/show.
The plot of the entire series is taking place on the surface of planets, finally some action in space, and then this! Wow!
'THIS IS' STAR WARS' at it's best, time for the producers, directors, actors for a new star wars era !!!!!!!!!!!😆😁😄😃🤘👍👍👍👍
Such a fantastic scene. One of the best
One of the most epic scene on tv in 2022 lol
The flechette rounds using the power of the tractor beam is one of the coolest 'no duh' things ever to come out of Star Wars.
I think the inspiration for this trick is from the Thrawn-Trilogy from Timothy Zahn from the 1990s. In one of the books, Luke uses a similar trick against Thrawns Stardestroyer.
This show, this scene sets a new standard in the SW universe
They is honestly one of the best clips in all of Star wars, just another level of bad ass
This is one of my favorite scenes in Andor so far besides the Ferrix Riot scene, top 5 easily from all of the franchise counting both movies and tv shows
The silence at the end really is *chefs kiss*
Haha 🙏 Have you seen the subtitles at the end as well? 😂😂😂
the silence and the reflections of the smoke from the Tie explosions - it’s all so well done
You damn well knew if Vader was with him there, he would’ve been fucked for real
"Andor" is a frantastic series. Great scenes like this, great dialogue and compelling characters.
I can only imagine that Vader had a pretty busy day executing people...
"A haulcraft? Escaped your clutches you say? Time to issue out some *apology acceptance* speeches! 1200 of them!!!"
😂🥇
This is extraordinary, one of the best SW scenes that I seen since the original movies.
The best Star Wars scene!
lol 😂 Disney seems to have completely killed the enthusiasm of Star Wars fans if they consider this to be the best SW scene
lost count how many times i rewatched this scene
0:34 Cantwell Class is a nod to Colin Cantwell, the designer of Star Wars Ships.
Luthen was a Jedi, his whole monologue to Andor explains his life as a Jedi without actually saying it.
Also The flyby the Con Tower was a taunt too
Also the prevent fire, the tie fighters won’t fire if their own cruiser is the background collateral
At the end, the commander knowing that his days as a ship commander just ended. He'll be lucky to be in command of the toilet cleaning crew.
I like how it's not over the top action, though I think the surprise lightsaber barrel roll are going to be criticized later for existing just for show.
He firstly goes for the TIE bomber as a lead of the wing... Love it.
A truly good star wars show.
The way he went up in front of them to give them a show & vanished right away. That was bad ass.
Its a scene how Star Wars was meant to be taken back in the day.
See, watching this I actually get giddy like I did when I was a kid watching scenes from the OT. LOL.
This is a fantastic sequence. Was not expecting it when it happened!
3:26 "urr....Sir? Lord Vader demands an update."
😂💀
