Thanks for the great tips guys! Can I just add that some Dune swags are great apparatus for collecting a plentiful supply of fresh rain water. The one I purchased, on special from Anaconda, had seems that leaked like a sieve, no amount of seasoning or sealing could stop the flow, and as a result, the pvc base would fill up like a tub. This made for an efficient yet rather inconvenient way to collect an abundant water reserve, great for general purpose use around camp. Thankfully, Anaconda kindly accepted that the notion of sleeping in 2 inches of water did not appeal to me as much as one might think, and unenthusiasticlly refunded my hard earned cash. After this, I went and purchased a 23Zero swag, which has pre-sealed seams as standard, and I haven't looked back. Looking forward to seeing more vids from you guys.
I have the same kings double swag, I've cut a pool noodle in half and put half each side of the mattress in between the zip and mattress. Originally I did this to push the zip out as water was collecting in the sag and soaking the mattress when it rained.. bonus was that it opened up the space inside from the sag. Great idea with the water pipe arch. Cheers for the video ✌🏼
My double swag came with an interior centre bendy pole which is awesome because I don’t have to worry about taking a piece of poly pipe to keep the sides out. Thanks for the great tips. I will be getting mine out and airing it out ready for the Xmas camping season. 👍🇦🇺
A little hack for rectifying sag in the Kings deluxe double swag is to buy the spares kit for the XTM 1400mm double swag. The bows fit perfectly inside and you just need to wrap the pole ends in gaffer tape to stop it poking a hole through the swag floor.
Instead of using a ground sheet, I use the cheap clip together foam squares, they increase your mattress thickness by a centimetre, be sure to get the ones with the holes, it reduces moisture buildup and the pack has enough squares for storing gear on.
I use a pool noodle for the swag! Just get in and put the pool noodle in like a middle support. Works a treat! Then just pull it out when you get out. Makes room and is easy! And cheap!
Great video, just got my first swag and this was by far the best, most consice and nonense free video. Thanks very much. Looking forward to watching your other videos.
I hadn't thought of putting my swag on top of a stretcher bed. I've got one, I might try it out for size next time. I always put a ground sheet down, whether I'm using a tent or swag. I've often had a tarp over to top a bit like a lean to shelter when it wet or even sometimes when it's the middle of summer. A tarp used like a lean to can help keep your tent or swag a lot cooler instead of it being like a sauna inside.
@@ChaseTheWeekend , I like how you guys used your awning on the side of your 4×4 in the same way. Combine that with the stretcher bed (as I'm guessing you guys have already done) under the swag and that would keep it nice and cool. All ya need then is a nice cross breeze coming off a creek or river and you're set. Then sit back with one of your jaffle cheese burgers and a cold beer out of the creek and ya set. Anyone would think I've been watching some of your videos........ 😁 🍻🍔
Brilliant hack using some Blue Line 25mm Poly Pipe with 20mm Yorkflex as the inner tube for joining the Poly at the centre. Love it! I'll now reconsider retiring my Big Daddy Deluxe to my nephew for upgrading to an Oztent RS2 Swag and save the $1K for other things
We’re going on a family camp in 2 weeks with our 4 month old baby and I’ve been watching swag and baby camping videos like crazy to be as prepared as possible 😅 but this was the first time I’ve heard or seen that flap rolling trick, excellent 👏🏻👏🏻 thanks fellas!
I once spent 8 months in a swag and was curious what would be in this video , I thought it was a good vid but it was all stuff id seen or learnt the hard way but right at the end that last tip was brilliant, I'm surprised I hadn't seen it before.
the clip gave a tip to correct sagging sides of the swag - by adding guy cords at each corner, attached to the U struts roughly half way between the top and the ground. Works brilliantly. Greatly reduced the sag and gave lots more internal volume to the swag. I attached the cords not directly to the U struts (which would mean the cord would have to be retied each time) but to the canvas loops holding the retaining clips for the U strut (which means the guy cord can be left in place each time the swag is packed up).
I got rid of the mattress in my swag and replaced it with a dual chamber air mattress from Sea to Summit. The whole set up is lighter and packs up smaller. Works a treat.
Nice, great tip, will check it out. I currently use the original foam mattress and then use a self-inflating mattress on the top of that. Mainly for longer camp trips as it's a bit much for over nighters. Thanks for watching!
I'd love put some shrimps on the barbie with you blokes while we setup our swags, or whatever you guys say over there 🤣 Thanks for sharing some great ideas, cheerio!
With the saggy sides, much like the rope, I used 2 occy straps on each end and connected it to the peg in the ground. easy, hooks on, no knots. that and the water pipe would be mint.
To season a swag: fill bath with water and submerge the swag in it for couple of hours. Much more effective than a hose. Thanks for the content. cheers
@@alanadebear9560 rolled up with the end of roll facing down so water doesn't get in when it rains. Never been wet on the inside or dusty. In terms of longevity, other commentators have stated that the swag will wear better if protected, very logical however my swag is 10 years old and made from 100% Australian canvas and other than normal wear I have no issues with it. If I was travelling in red dust regions I can absolutely see the benefits of a bag because that stuff is nasty. Doesn't concern me whether others chose to always use a bag but I'm yet to see evidence of their practicality in most applications if the swag is made from high quality materials. Each to their own. Cheers
That was an awesome set of tips for swags. I have an ARB and it doesn't suffer from saggy sides, but the hose pipe is a super "fix" if it did happen. I use a self-inflating mattress as well as the 75mm standard one wrecks your back by about night two. I used to have a canvas ground cover as well, but I find if it rains, it just collects water and in the middle of the night you step out into little ponds. For this I use a mesh cover from Kings. Sorts out the rain water and sand perfectly. Love the fly/side rolling tip as well. Hadn't thought of this and will make life much easier. Cheers.
Hi Brendan, no problem. Matt uses a self inflating mattress for the same reason. We recently grabbed a single for one of the kids and the '50mm' mattress was actually about 35mm so we stripped it and glued it to the top of a 50mm foam sheet, big improvement and still fits in the swag bag!
One tip I can offer is to ditch the guy ropes and get some metal chain and heavy duty tent pegs. Attach the chain to the swag with D Shackles. You can hammer those pegs into the hardest ground and get the swag super tight.
Hey, thanks for watching. I suppose it really depends on the rain and the swag. The more seems and stitches the more chance of water penetration. Not much will keep rain out if it's coming in horizontal haha. To be honest, the first sight of rain and I'm gone, don't like getting wet haha.
You've probably done a video on this already, but I am looking at the getting the Anaconda special Dune 4WD King Titan Double Swag and was wondering what you blokes thought of it?
Mines been brilliant, I've used it on at least 15 different trips now, no issues but I did put a hole in it with the cross bar where I missed the eyelet on one end. The sides do sag in a fair bit which is fine if one person is in there but with 2 you'd want to look at the middle bar mod aka pool noodle or pvc pipe. The mattress is pretty thin, I actually run a self inflating air mattress over the top if camping in it for more than one night. We might have to do a 2yr review on it and some of the other swags we have. I just bought a new Oztrail and the thing is so much better but it was about 3 times as expensive, and much bigger and heavier. Thanks for watching!
One thing thats often overlooked is airing out the mattress with PVC lined swags. Its a reason why 100% canvas swags are a good idea - but less waterproof. Hot bodies over the PVC base generate condensation under the mattress which leads to mould build up.
This is what im experiencing. Thought a ground mat might fix but this makes a lot of sense. Cheers... And thanks for putting these pro tips out dudes. I reckon ill get a second mattress to go inside for sure
Great vid with lots of practical tips. Thank you! 😁 I’ve got the big daddy tent too so I was wondering if you remember the measurements for the pipe so I can get some
Ours was about 1.8m-2m from memory. Easy way to get the length is measure one of the end poles as each swag is slightly different. Cut over and trim back to suit. Good luck, thanks for watching!
Cool tips. I'm thinking about getting a swag instead of a roof top tent . I live in Colorado and swags are an odd duck. Can't swing a sedated colie without bumping into a rooftop tent.
Yes, we had swags (and dome tents) years ago when we were kids just getting into 4x4ing and then moved into Jayco pop top campers once our own kids came along and now the kids are older were going back to swags haha. They're a great, easy way to camp and pretty cheap and lots to choose from. Roof tops certainly are a good option as well, we'd love to get our hands on some eventually. Thanks for watching!
Great tip on rolling it up boys thanks for that one, how about doing a good comparison on a mattress deflator the cheap ones are puss and looking for a decent one to help suck out that air in the matress so rolling it up is easier. Cheers boys
Hey bocheef, thanks for watching. Thanks for the suggestion, we're actually looking into inflators/deflators and air mattress at the moment, not sure when the video will be out but stay tuned in 2023.
I bought a swag, seasoned it (or so I thought) took it out camping a few days later, it rained and Leaked inside. Does that still count as seasoning if it leaked? 😂
D'oh. Well, if it wasn't before it will certainly be seasoned now after getting rained on! Hope that hasn't deterred you from getting out there again? Thanks for watching!
@@ChaseTheWeekend we went out the next weekend 😎 And again this one coming! I also seasoned the whole swag inside and out I got every single bit on canvas today and let it sit In the sun 👍🏼
just buy the swag in winter and set it up in the backyard, i did that over a 2 week period when there was lots of rain, so it got wet and dried about 8 times before i used it, Simples
That's exactly what I did with my single swag I recently got. Left it out and got rained on (mainly because I forgot to roll it up and got home too late the following day before it got damp again). Thanks for watching!
@@ChaseTheWeekend great video mate. I have had a swag for years now and never thought of rolling up the sides like that. Duh lol thanks for making me look clever on my next trip hahaha.
If you get your bucket floor snug around the bottom and sides of your mattress and fold your canvas in, so the bulk of it is in the middle you'll get her in tight, cause you don't end up with canvas poking out the ends, which makes it a nightmare to get it back in the bag
Hey, thanks for watching. I think it was a piece of dowl from memory. Only needs to be about 50mm in length and the same diameter as the inside of the pipe. Just sand one side down a little so it slides in and out a bit easier and firm fit on the other side.
The worse thing is it doesn't matter what you do your swag will get moisture under it, every time I've used mine whether it's raining or not or whether I put a tarp down or not its always wet under it..
Yes, the problem is real. We actually address this in a new swag video that will be coming out in the next few weeks. Always a good idea to have an old towel or rags handy so you can wipe it down before putting away. Thanks for watching!
I just bought a Dune King Titan swag, my 1st one, when seasoning them how long do they take to dry? Given its winter here days average about 12 degrees, will it dry in that kind of weather? Or should i wait till spring?
I'd say it would dry but might take a couple days depending on how wet it gets. The quicker it dries the better though as the canvas will shrink more but the canvas will continue to shrink over time anyway so if you did it now and then again in summer it won't hurt. Be aware though I seasoned a Barwon Swag in summer here and it dried in about an hour or so but I left it out for a few days and the colour in the canvas faded a bit. Thanks for watching!
@@ChaseTheWeekend Thanks for the reply, i might wait till spring and better weather, i got a Commodore wagon so i can crash in the back of that for now if i get down to the coast.
Ages ago. Do a quick google search and you'll see the majority of what people call swags are these. Out with the old and in with the new. Not everyone wants to sleep with canvas on their face. Oh, and I know, if you know.
Good quality swag will solve your sagging issues and hosing won’t season it properly, as you can see in the video the water was beading off and not soaking in. Immersing in water for a couple of days does the job, I know this from experience and getting wet after only hosing.
Thanks for your comment. We've heard that soaking in a bath is the preferred way, we'll give it a go in a follow up video. I did try to take one of my double swags into the bathroom but two things happened, 1. My swag was too big for the bath so I would have to use the shower and 2. My wife wasn't impressed with my idea. The Kings swag in the video is an old swag that has been seasoned already, hence the water beading straight off, we only used it for the demonstration. I recently purchased a Barwon swag from Anaconda and it got a good soaking and has worked a treat since. Thanks again and make sure you check our other videos out too!
Plus walking through the house with heaps of water drips over the carpet trying to get out the back door. Plus a bathroom half flooded. Plus the weight trying to carry it. I think I'll use a clean large Otto bin to soak it
Hi Gilbert, thanks for watching. There are a few brands that have the centre hoop such as 23Zero and Darche, among others. Stay tuned for more swag related videos in 2023!
All dome seats sag a little bit, but the sag of the Kings swags is terrible. The end poles also seem to be poor quality and don’t hold their shape well under use. Kings is great as it makes camping affordable for everyone, but they’re overrated and don’t compare to brands such as Darche. If you can stretch the budget, don’t choose Kings. Either way, happy camping 🙂👍🏻
We agree Tristan, the Kings swags do seem to big the biggest culprits for saggy sides. They (4WD Supa Centre) do provide affordable products and we're not shying away from admitting we do have a bit of Kings gear and for the most part it does the job. Darche do a quality product and I'd love to get my hands on a Dirty Dee 1400. Thanks for watching!

Does that still count as seasoning if it leaked? 😂
D'oh. Well, if it wasn't before it will certainly be seasoned now after getting rained on! Hope that hasn't deterred you from getting out there again? Thanks for watching!
@@ChaseTheWeekend we went out the next weekend 😎
And again this one coming!
I also seasoned the whole swag inside and out I got every single bit on canvas today and let it sit In the sun 👍🏼
@@Jason_TheFitnessCoach Mint! Should be good now. Love that you're out there Chasing The Weekend 😉😁
I’ve got a dune double swag what length did you cut your poly pipe for the inside sag at?
Gaz shows us how to measure it in our part 2 video: ua-cam.com/video/iw1RNPluWvI/v-deo.html thanks for watching
Good video with some good advice about seasoning and drying a swag out.
To be fair those, these are really tents not swags.
Thanks Mike, we hear that a lot haha 4WD Supacentre, Anaconda, BCF and the rest should really stop selling them as swags
just buy the swag in winter and set it up in the backyard, i did that over a 2 week period when there was lots of rain, so it got wet and dried about 8 times before i used it, Simples
12V air con vent inside blows out the walls best and keeps temp comfortable
Great idea, good for hot Aussie summers. Thanks for watching!
Do you have a tip for rolling up a double swag on your own and being able to get it tight enough to fit back in the bag?😂
No sorry mate, that’s one of life’s greatest mysteries!
😂
If you get your bucket floor snug around the bottom and sides of your mattress and fold your canvas in, so the bulk of it is in the middle you'll get her in tight, cause you don't end up with canvas poking out the ends, which makes it a nightmare to get it back in the bag
And use the straps to tighten it
Throw it away and get a tent, japara is perfect.
Hey just wondering what you used for the joiner on the irrigation hose?
Hey, thanks for watching. I think it was a piece of dowl from memory. Only needs to be about 50mm in length and the same diameter as the inside of the pipe. Just sand one side down a little so it slides in and out a bit easier and firm fit on the other side.
@@ChaseTheWeekend thank you 😁
We do the guy rope thing with the sagging we use pool noodles too lol
We're gonna give the pool noodle trick a go. Thanks for watching!
Ok nice swag hacks but a hose vs a pool noodle let's get down and voting lol....I did upload my video a few yrs ago
we'll check it out.
I've got that exact water pipe to do exactly the same 😂
Nice! Thanks for watching!
The humble pool noodle works as well 👍👍
Thanks boys.
No problem at all, thanks for watching
Tip fot rolling flaps. Always roll down, not up. Rolling down stops water getting caught in flap.
Nice, thanks for the tip!
What brand canvas ground sheet do you use in the video?
Hi Rick, it's Walkers Creek www.walkerscreek.com.au/ Thanks for watching!
I’m still trying to work out when these started being called swags. These are tents. if you know you know 🐴 🤠
Ages ago. Do a quick google search and you'll see the majority of what people call swags are these. Out with the old and in with the new. Not everyone wants to sleep with canvas on their face. Oh, and I know, if you know.
Cause in OZ we have had Swaggies walking the track for ever with their hats n’ corks n’ of course swags 😏 🍺
Thank you
No problem, thanks for watching!
Everyone DID in fact know, but they didn't tell you 'cause they knew you'd be straight onto youtube to tell everybody!
😅 Thanks for watching, make sure you let us know any other tips so we can, um, keep to ourselves 😁
What was the can of drink for?
Just for something to keep your hand busy while hosing down the swag. Also, to drink. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Lads
Thanks for watching Stu, our pleasure.
That is all Good and Well, but does that get you to win a Rugby World Cup, LOL!!!!!
Well, depends which country you go for 😂 SA too good this time.
I think I'll use a clean large Otto bin to soak it
The sag is an issue. Made a similar light weight two hoop prop for my swag.
Thanks for your comment. Yes, a saggy swag can be annoying.
What holds the water pipe in place from sliding over?
Hi Robert, just the weight of the canvas on the pipe seems to hold it in place. The other method is to use a pool noodle. Thanks for watching!
Good swags like oztrail have a third rod in the centre
Good tips bad jokes. 😊
😂😅 Thanks haha, we're both dads so the jokes come with the territory. Thanks for watching
I us old tent pole to use on center of swag
Thanks for watching Ral!
@@ChaseTheWeekend sorry commented before Finishing video
For the size of a double swag. I’d rather carry a 3 by 3 turbo tent as it’s the same size
Yeah, just comes down to costs and preferences I guess. Thanks for watching.
Seasoning, tent put in the washing machine let soak 12 24 hour then set up the tent let the sun dry it finished
That's one way to do it for sure but I've got a front loader and pretty sure my wife wouldn't approve haha, thanks for watching!
