I was there! How 20 years just blew by is beyond me. I always come back here to refresh my memory of this once in a lifetime event. I was in love, I still had my father, and 9/11 hadn't happened yet! God Bless
This has to be one of the best Elton John/Bernie Taupin ballardsof all time. I can close my eyesand see the scene Elton portrays with such clarity. "... and peace to this young warrior comes with a bullet hole". Pure genius! If you don't emphasize with these lyrics, you have no soul. Pure genius!
Simply probably one of the best performances on all of UA-cam. The dynamics, the builld up, the climax, the intensity, the story, the musicianship etc etc
2pac brought me here. I was disappointed that Elton didn’t do this when I saw him live, but it was one of the BEST CONCERTS I've ever been to. He's a legend and doesn't get enough praise, nor does this song.
+Organized Chaos In Tupac's song Ghetto Gospel he samples some lyrics from this song. Also your comment made me ashamed to like the same artists as you.
It's unbelievable how powerful the song is. The lyrics and the score melt together so perfectly, it's almost beyond comprehension. But what's perhaps the most jarring about the song as a whole, is that it's just sitting there between all the more popular songs of Madman Across the Water. Literally *nobody* except true Elton John fans know about it. This has even been confirmed by Elton himself, as most people stand there flabbergasted when this is being played live, never having heard it before. I think the studio version remains the most powerful when listening through an audio system, but live (like really being there) with the performance as seen here must give anyone the chills.
I am not sure that there are many pianists - classical or popular - whose playing could stand up to that drumming performance! Elton john has always been hard on his keyboards but goodness me he needed to be on that occasion! I came to the Madman Across the Water album late. But I used to listen to it like I'd listen to a Beethoven Symphony. It needed to be listened to. Madman Across the Water was fabulous, but this is the song that reached somewhere deep inside. And this is an exceptional performance of it.
In addition to so many other reasons to love Elton John, I love that he will always pull out any one of a number of amazing “non-hits” at any time. AND be able to arrange it for whatever ensemble he happens to have at the time. AND in a brilliant way.
How is it that an Englishman can put into song the plight of the "Native American" so well? This is what happened in a nutshell.....it is beautiful, sad, and true......and that is what makes this an "album cut" for all time.....
Charles, Bernie had/has a great fascination with the old west and all things cowboys and Indians etc.... Notice, Tumbleweed connection, Don't shoot me I'm only the Piano Player, Captain fantastic and the brown dirt cowboy, etc. All are "Western" themes. I'm kinda surprised he didn't write for more C/W artists... this is probably what c/w would or should sound like if they had the talent of Bernie and Elton..
Elton John is genius. But that percussionist is an absolute God. He basically played all the backing on multiple instruments. Knighthood for you too, sir.
What a spectacular performance from both Elton and Ray. Both are still extremely passionate about what they do after all these years. It's quite admirable.
I remember reading somewhere in the early days Taupin and EJ were really enamored with the old “American west”. Which is really such a specific period in time and a fairly specific location in the country. It shows beautifully through this song and others (rotten peaches, Texan love song, basically all of tumbleweed connection)
Thank you so much to take the song on your channel! It's so amazing Song everytime I heard this song I'm crying! This is one of the rare Songs from Elton on life stage! ❤️❤️❤️
The greatest concert I have ever seen (and I'm 55, I've seen a bunch) was Elton John and Ray Cooper, no other band, at the Elliott Hall of Music at Purdue University in about 1979 - amazing is the only word I can use to describe it. This song is very emblematic of the show. I was fortunate to have seen it.
My new wife and I got tickets from a new friend who ran Block Buster Pavlovian, received per-concert press pass and party tickets.. sitting at next table watching Elton chowing down a salad,, But it was this very concert but a week weeks later , Ray Cooper Rocked,, but personally i like the band too,, i still love eltons music.
I was also at the show at Purdue in 79 and I still tell people to this day it was the best concert I have ever been to as well. The acoustics were unbelievable in Elliot Hall and Ray Cooper was amazing!
I saw that same tour-caught the show at Tower Theater in Phila. I nearly passed out when they performed "Where to Now, St. Peter." Never thought I'd see it performed live. The entire evening was a transcendent experience.
Outstanding !! Brings a tear to my eye! Especially, thinking about the Indian warrior Rod Lindsay. You strung Your bowfor the last time Rest In Peace ! You are in the hills of gold we love you
Thanks for posting this, remember watching the whole concert on MTV ,one of his best live shows IMO.The slowed down version of Crocodile Rock sticks out too!
It took an Englishman to put into song, what the white man did to the people that were here before them. Being native American, I want to end like Elton sings........I know that will never happen.....but his song rings true for the ghost warriors. They lie in wait for the day to rise again and live among the tatakin and the yellow moon. thank you Bernie. This is the closest I've seen of a perfect performance. What a beautiful song from my favorite EJ album, Madman Across the Water. No doubt Ray Cooper is one of the best percussionists ever.
Madman Across The Water is my favorite album By EJ..And this song along with "razor Face" and "rotten Peaches"..The title track "Madman Across The Water"(which feature Rick Wakeman)is also brilliant..People surely will point out the obvious, "Levon" and "Tiny Dancer"and that's fine..Both great songs..But do yourself a favor, especially if you still own a functioning turn table and try to get this album..Elton John/Bernie Taupin....One of the best music/lyrics combo ever...Period...
He sounds good, but I prefer him singing this when he was young; his voice was so beautiful. You could hear his accent more which added beauty to any song he sang.
As I awoke this evening with the smell of wood smoke clinging Like a gentle cobweb hanging upon a painted tepee Oh I went to see my chieftain with my warlance and my woman For he told us that the yellow moon would very soon be leaving This I can't believe I said, I can't believe our warlord's dead Oh he would not leave the chosen ones to the buzzards and the soldiers guns Oh great father of the Iroquois ever since I was young I've read the writing of the smoke and breast fed on the sound of drums I've learned to hurl the tomahawk and ride a painted pony wild To run the gauntlet of the Sioux, to make a chieftain's daughter mine And now you ask that I should watch The red man's race be slowly crushed What kind of words are these to hear From Yellow Dog whom white man fears I take only what is mine Lord, my pony, my squaw, and my child I can't stay to see you die, along with my tribe's pride I go to search for the yellow moon and the fathers of our sons Where the red sun sinks in the hills of gold and the healing waters run Trampling down the prairie rose, leaving hoof tracks in the sand Those who wish to follow me, I welcome with my hands I heard from passing renegades Geronimo was dead He'd been laying down his weapons when they filled him full of lead Now there seems no reason why I should carry on In this land that once was my land I can't find a home It's lonely and it's quiet and the horse soldiers are coming And I think it's time I strung my bow and ceased my senseless running For soon I'll find the yellow moon along with my loved ones Where the buffaloes graze in clover fields without the sound of guns And the red sun sinks at last into the hills of gold And peace to this young warrior comes with a bullet hole

a masterpiece, with two genius artists ! No one could ever get bored of this song

Ray Cooper, ladies and gentlemen....

love how passionate the drummer is, even in old age
Ray Cooper has been great, a real treat whenever he has been in concert with Elton

The Real Piano Man
Agree
Sacrilege. Make no mistake, just because Billy Joel doesn't show off as often as Elton doesn't mean for one sec that he doesn't have those chops.
Liberace was the real piano man!

All Elton needs is Ray Cooper on Percussion.....And The Magic Just Happens...

It’s amazing how Elton and Ray can turn a melody to sound like a Native American epic

such an underappreciated tribute to the tragedy of the native americans and their genocide by the US :|
