Beginning with the Background for a Change - Sketchbook Session

- To be clear, there is no right or wrong way to begin a painting. However, I have a habit of jumping in with lots of details first and later wishing I had started with a background - literally ANY background. Haha! Today, I decided I'd do my future self a favor and explore the background FIRST in these to sketchbook paintings.

Once you brought in the collage, I began to smile.
☺️☺️☺️
Love your process. When it comes to working intuitively, there are no mistakes; there are only adjustments!
Absolutely! ❤️
The left hand side, I love the way you handled that curved line going from collage to paint.
Wow, you’ve got a great eye! 🎨 Thanks for noticing that! ❤️🙌
I like them equally. That’s an interesting colour scheme but it really works. Thank you Jackie.
Glad you like it! ❤️❤️❤️
Greetings to you, Jackie. It is always a pleasure to watch you create. Both sides communicated the same excitement...Color...you never miss. Looking forward to your next share!
Thank you so much, Tashe! Are you the same Tashe I chatted with on last week’s live video?? ❤️
@jackieschomburgart I sure am! It was the highlight of my day. I spoke about it like I interacted LIVE with a Superstar. 🤣🤣
They don't understand us Gen Xers freaking out over how easy tech makes it to close the 6° of separation gap. 🤣
I'm always here.
Haha! You’re the best! So nice to see you here on IG as well! ❤️❤️❤️
@jackieschomburgart just followed you on IG. Just looking through your posts gave me chills! Loving your art language!!
It always amazes me when I do a whole painting swearing that I won't add black this time, how unfinished it looks until you give in and add even just a small bit.
Thank you for the tip about sealing the tape, pretty sure that's going to be a game changer!
I love the simplicity of the left side, something I have yet to ever achieve. Both are lovely though! Thanks for sharing. 🌻
aha, black always sneaks in, right?! 🖤 So glad the tape tip helped! 🎨🌟
Ha!! Well Jacks!!
~❤~ IF I really had to choose...I would actually go with the Right side!!! Funny how everybody's eyes see things differently!! Makes life more interesting!! And that's why I prefer the Right side....I just find it simply more interesting!!
Wild too how you can pull such unusual colors together and make both sides truly
successful~!!
Thanks Jackie!! 😊
❤️❤️❤️ Oh yes, we all have our own unique filters that we see life through - it always keeps things interesting 🤗
Love the left one!….. ❤
Thanks so much! ❤️
I really hate choosing because I love them both so much! But if I must-the right side has a little house with smoke coming out of the chimney, and I have to choose that one.😘 This was super fun to watch! I love the taping results on both.
Haha, tough choice, right?! 🏠✨ Glad you enjoyed it-thanks so much for watching! 😄
Left side love that shape.
You’ve got great taste! The left side really pops, right? 💯👏
SO DIFFICULT to choose a favourite!!!! I guess I'll go with the left side, simply because I love that little "eye glass" at the top of that big curve. 😆 ❤❤❤
It DOES look like a little eye glass! 😆❤️❤️❤️
No need to choose a favorite because, in my opinion, they're both gorgeous and need to stay together. Each of them elevates the other.
Aww, thanks Janet! ❤️🤩🌈
So fun to watch your process. It was a roller coaster ride :) Love them both, but the one on the left is my favourite.
Haha! It was quite a ride, wasn’t it? 😅 Thanks so much! 😊
The end results were a sweet surprise...love them both❤
Aww, that’s so nice to hear - thank you! ☺️ ❤️🌈
i vacillated like you - ending up loving the left side and would like to see how the right ended up! so interesting, inspiring and informative - as always - thanks jackie
Haha, same here! I’ll show the right side soon! Thanks for the support! ❤️
it's a very difficult choice--but i think i like the left side the most. i like the way the black & red partial circle looks.
Thanks Cynthia! ❤️
Left side by just a hair… because both turned out great! And at no point did I know where it was going - so fun to watch. 🙂 What is that beautiful purple color? Tfs!!
Fun to watch and great results!
I’m so glad! 🤗
Interesting color palette. Very pretty. I’m so inspired by your work. I’ve started grid journaling and having so much fun. Not as good as yours, but having fun and that’s the idea, right?
So happy to hear this! 🥰 Your grid journaling sounds awesome-enjoy every bit! 📒✨
Left side!
❤️❤️❤️
I enjoyed watching your process! At the 4:55 mark in video you use some sort of squeeze devise for white marks..,what is that? Love the line it makes!
I think that’s the Posca Mop’r paint marker you’re referring to. Here’s the one I have: amzn.to/4gYTxBk 🤗
Love this color palette Jackie, what was your purple glaze?
I don’t remember off-hand, but I almost always mention the colors I’m using in the video 👍
Hi Jackie, I’m new to your site, but loving your style. I haven’t tried those rubber brushes you use, but bought a couple to try. How do you clean them ?
Oh yes, color shapers are one of my favorite tools! While the paint is off, you can wipe them off with a wet paper towel or rag. If the paint is dry, you can peel it off or soak it in water for a bit and the paint will come right off ❤️
I do want to be sure that I understand the timing of the use of the gel medium. Did you put it on before and after the tape? Or was it just afterward?
After the tape, before the paint 👍
You’re describing me .. ADHD over the top at everything.
I feel you! 😆 Everything’s a full-on adventure with ADHD! 🔥🙌
