I have found the RTX 4070 is really good for 3D rendering in programs like Brice, Daz studio, and the IRAY render engine, (it also rendered really fast on 3D Studio Max, but i only had an upgrade trial copy because my licensed copy of 3DS Max is a decade old and is only used for modeling). My personal benchmark was of a scene I created specifically to punish the GPU's. I rendered the same scene in Daz Studio using the IRAY engine at 4k resolution with 4k textures on every object set for a total of 3500 iterations. My result for the 3 cards i have were the NVIDIA 2070 Super render time 6 hours and 43 min. The RTX 3070 was 3 hours and 22 min , and the RTX 4070 cut it down to 44 min total!!! (I was shocked as to how fast the 4070 rendered the scene) I made no changes to the file before rendering, so all three cards were rendering the exact scene with zero changes. I know this was not a formal bench test, but i thought I would share the results for the 3D modelers out there since most card reviews focus on games vs 3D programs. Hope the info helps the modelers out there in the market for an upgrade.
Broo thank you so much ❤😭
Thanks! I've been looking at the 4070 ever since months ago, now my mind is made. This card is nuts.
@@fdevaa It also runs really cool. As in the fans rarely spin up. They do some times but very rarely. I am really happy with the 4070. Happy rendering!
@@Eneeki which 4070 are you using? I've looked around and saw that some 4070s run hotter/louder than others
@@fdevaa "Asus Tough Gaming RTX 4070". NOT the TI version. (12 gig onboard ram version). I went with the Asus simply because my motherboard is by Asus so i figured having both the same brand would insure they play nice together. it is the big one with 3 fans but i barely hear the fans spin up because of how huge the heat sink is. (note: i have a really old and huge Thermal Take tower case with 9 case fans. It has 3 in front 2 on back 3 on tip and one on the bottom, so the case is very good with air flow.)
These cards are at their power draw limit from their sources max available draw.
So overclocking will be extremely limited.
Marcus, why do you ignore Memory in AB? Push core 100 to 250 but also boost Memory by 1000 to 2000. Should see a nice 4%-7% increase.
YOU SHOULD INCLUDE THERMALS AND NOISE CHARTS AS WELL
Finally, someone who talks about pc's in a way I can understand (helps he is a fellow british) and he also talks clear and a skilled presenter (I'm subbing)
Another great video Marcus!!! I really appreciate the high energy and dad jokes in every video my man. I’ll be checking out the pc centric store as a result as well(-:
This is good timing because I'm looking to finally pull the trigger and change my 1070. Its either this or something like a 6950xt
That would be cool if games gave you the option to turn on path tracing while in photo mode only. Also, more games need photo mode.
had the card in my System about a day after launch, really satisfied with performance and efficiency. But some custom models are extremely overpriced (100-150€ extra for maybe 50 MHz and RGB) for some reason (at least in Germany) so i would go for the OC editions of the more basic cards like the MSI Ventus OC or Asus Dual OC (which i have and very like). With those cards you get a good factory OC for a price close to MSRP
I am needing a new GPU and would like to upgrade my CPU at some point. SInce my case required a small form power supply, I kind of went for a decent psu, but not really a super powerful one. I have 650 w evga supernova. I had a RX 6700 XT, but adorable foster kittens got scared and tangled in some cords and a GPU got broken. Anyway, what makes the 4070 really attractive to me, is the power. I was looking at getting a 3080 second hand. The 4070 offers a few more gb ram, more features and way better power efficiency. I'm looking at the ventus 3x just for a tiny bit more cooling. So it's important in me to ask people who aren't reviewing the card about their experience. I'm going to wait a couple of months and see if any surprises pop up. Have you experienced anything negative at all? SOrry, I have ADHD and I suck at being direct and concise when I type to someone.
Yeah , i have the MSI Ventus oc . i have no probs with it , it does what i want .
Occasional heavy gaming , but mostly light . I like it .
ive had a founders edition 4070 since launch, and do not have any regrets
@@nerdjournal So you know, i do not think i have ever heard my vid card fans spin up. the CPU fans yes, but no the NVIDIA card fans. it may be because i have a Asus 4070 that comes with a huge heat sink. But thought i would let you know where the heat in my system tends to come from when i render. My 4070 is a beast of a card and takes up 2 slots on the case.
This is the card I decided to upgrade to from the RTX 2070 super which seems very logical for me to do, as I'm heavily into stable diffusion.
i have the same card, 2070 super,is it worth changing it to this video card?
@@AmpuLeah I believe it is, It's 150% more capable than the 2070, has latest Ada LoveLace Architecture and uses the latest DLSS 3 Tech not to mention the Vram is GDDR6X which is way more better than original GDDR6
I went from a 2070S to a 3070 then to this GB 4070 Gaming OC. Despite what the numbers would suggest, I reckon every one of those upgrades was worth it - if you have a fast enough CPU that is. I just swapped my 12600K for a 14700KF and that changed things quite a bit in my games. I actually think the 4070 was CPU bottle-necked a bit with the 12600K. Note: Most of the games I play tend to be a bit CPU-heavy, so my result might not be 100% representative. Needless to say that my benchmark results also benefited from every one of those upgrades. Timespy with the 12600K was ~10000 overall (2070S), 12000 overall (3070) and 17000 overall (4070). With the 14700 KF and the 4070 this jumped to over 19000 - which 3DMark called "legendary" ;)
Just got a pre built Levano Legion PC that has one and I'm honestly so impresed. This is the first time I've ever been 10/10 happy with a pre built pc.
I'm about to get one too! Mine has a 4070 super in it. Is yours still doing well?
Marcus, can you do in future tests HIGH settings, because a lot of people would use HIGH to get that extra frames and not lose a lot of graphic quality
Hi just a quick question, can these 16-pin powered GPUs can be powered using 2 8-pin connectors? Just curious, I’m thinking of building a custom PC using some custom cables.
Not gonna lie, thought I was being drunk and stupid at best buy when I bought this as an upgrade from my 2070S. But I really do enjoy the card. I mostly play flight sims, which is why I wanted to upgrade (The 2070S ran everything on ultra 1440p just fine) except for my flight sims. I noticed an at least 60% increase with this card on DCS, X-Plane 12, and maybe 35-40% in MSFS. Which is perfect! DCS is the sim I really cared about. But throwing other games at it, it seems to run them even better than ever! I skipped the 3x series cards, but if you're in the market for a decently cheap card, this is the one!
Your builds are always so slick. Have you tried using those 180 connectors for a cleaner look? I saw Jay did a whole video on just those little connectors.
Not yet, need to order one !
I have one from cablemod. Made my system much neater and could put my side panel back on again! 😂
Got the ASUS Dual OC version of this card and it’s def been a welcome upgrade from my 8gb 3070. I stream VR games which can me more demanding than traditional flatscreen games, and I haven’t noticed any of the stuttering I’d usually get with the 3070 when streaming more intensive games. Also really liking the new AV1 encoder as well and the 20 watt decrease in power draw compared to the 3070
This is an excellently-timed video for me as I'm looking at possibly going into the 40 series with this card.
If anyone has any ideas or advice about a GPU similarly priced to this for video editing, streaming, and gaming, I'd love to hear it!!!
Live streaming gaming? I'm no expert but I've been reading a lot of reddit and comments on GPUs for over a month now and the general consensus is nvidia is better if you're going to live stream gameplay from the system you're playing on.
@@dhLotan Appreciate it, thank you!
If you are going from a good 20, or 30 series RTX - no point in upgrading to a 40.
If you have a GTX 1000 series, or a low model 20 series - upgrade if you want more frames and a better card.
For gaming, editing and streaming, again Nvidia beats AMD as more companies and software use CUDA. Some do use OpenGL but CUDA is generally better.
I came from a GTX1080 (8GB) to this 4070 (12GB). I wanted more frames, and this was a good card as it has 2x performance generally, (and most of the time more) over my 1080. I am not scared of the VRAM being just 12GB as I am sure it will last my usual 4/5 years I hold on to them for.
@@CarnivorousMonster I appreciate the reply!
@@Mitch47 Np buddy. Of course, make sure you look at other reviews that look at stuff you want to use the card for. Don't worry too much on the detail, just pic a card that is within your price range and from the research is the best for you. You can talk about VRAM vs Clock speed vs power draw vs etc etc all the time. At the end of the day, if you need a card, go with what you can afford now. If you want to play a game on a GPU and it can't do Ultra or High, you'll make it work. Games now a days looks very good on Medium graphics.
Thought about it but the chip it is based on is basically a 4060. Bought a 6950XT for under £600. Good few years at 1440p with that.
This is under £600 too?
How it it going? I also wanna buy a 6950xt but the power consumpion and heat is kinda holding me back

how much better was it
I actually got the zotac rtx 4070 OC version for $668 haven't put it in yet. But looks like a good GPU for that has a low ppwer draw. I would honestly say that high vram is good like the ones from AMD, but really its all about personal preference at this point and would also depend on the rig you'll be running as well. As for me i"m running a R7 5700X 32gb ddr4 ram and a 650w PSU for that power sweet spot. That should get me through the day
wait so the ryzen 7 5700x is a good cpu for the new 4070? and can it aslo be air cooled?
@@sushitrash2793 well since i don't have an open air test bench to test compatibility or even an actual rig to test it on. This is purely based on several online wattage check calculators and CPU/GPU bottleneck calculator and based on several outcomes that i've found it seems to be consistent and there seems to be high compatibility with the R7 5700x and RTX 4070 with an air cooler and to add this is going to be in an MATX/ITX case which is currently in consideration. Temp outcomes are a different story though
And to add this is ourely based on parts that i already have prepared for the PC that i am currently building

I picked up a evga 3070 when they liquidated. I still game at 1440p. Feel less bad about myself when seeing some of these charts at least.
I think its efficiency is being crazy overlooked by everyone

VRAM clock overclocking is most benefitial just overclock ram about 400-1000 room, and core clock about 150-200 and you will get most of the overclocking guys.
I have heard that the MSI Ventud 3X 4070 has problems due to temperatures in its hotspots, lack of screws and pads, is that true? This costs the same, does it have the same problems?

Isn't the 4070 the same fps performance as the 3080ti or 3090??? I don't use ray tracing.
Hey man new subscriber here with one question ! I just upgraded my entire setup… Im running a i5-13600kf with my 4070. But I’m still saving up for a monitor with 1440p res…. Is it okey to play games in 1080 for now until I get mine or should I just force the resolution on my games to 1440p?

Hey there!
Thanks for sharing this detailed breakdown of the RTX 4070's performance and your thoughts on it. It's great to see how it handles different games and resolutions. The fact that it offers solid performance at 1440p is definitely appealing, especially considering the price point.
I do have a couple of questions, though. You mentioned that the gigabyte 4070 card doesn't offer as good value for money as the founders edition. Could you elaborate on why that is the case? What specific differences or drawbacks do you see in the gigabyte version?
Additionally, you briefly mentioned that AMD cards tend to perform better in Warzone. Do you have any benchmark data or more insights on how the 4070 compares to AMD's offerings, particularly in games like Warzone?
Overall, your review provides valuable information for those considering the RTX 4070, and I appreciate your efforts in testing and sharing your findings. Looking forward to hearing more from you!
Have a look at our GPU buyers guide from a few months back :) Also, pricing has changed massively since launch, so just buy whatever is under RRP with decent cooling
It's very hard time, for Pascal users. I mean if u playing with gtx 1080 or even 1070, it is a large performance uplift.
The good thing is, no PSU upgrade needed (if you use something like 550 or 600W PSU) plus you can't run in cpu limit so it is possible to run this puppy with older processor.
Yes the Price. It is to high. But it will drop soon, im sure.
On the other Side, if u care about Raytracing, DLLS ect. yes this card is a good choice. For standard rasterization performance i would go with team RED.
only my opinion
true
Yea i have an Asus GTX 1080 , very tempted to pull the trigger on one of these.
I only care about pure raster and didn’t want to get screwed again on VRAM so went 7900XTX
@@inmypaants The 7900 XTX is twice as much as this card where i live. The 4070 can work as a replacement in systems from 2016+ . The 7900 XTX is not really an option unless you update your whole pc, not something i'm interested in atm.
@@inmypaants The 4080 is the better GPU. It has superior features, encoding, raytracing, DLSS, is 100watts more efficient, better 1080p and 1440p performance, typically ties at 4K in most games and higher 1% lows which is even more important.
The exhaust fan not spinning is hurting my soul. Cool card tho.
why suddenly use Framegeneration in the comparison only if RT is activated. Use framegeneration in RT off comparison too, show with and without values or dont use it at all.

Can anyone tell me what is difference between rtx4070 windforce and rtx 4070 gaming OC
Graphics cards might be the size of a current gen gaming console but at least they are more expensive and require the rest of a PC to use, right?
Will be upgrading from a gtx 1050ti to 4070 so I can't compare what I do kno is it will be a gigantic difference and it's about time I upgraded. Will it run gta 6 only time will tell.
12 gb vram is enough?
I just wasn't going to spend €820 for a "bare-bones" 4070 Ti, even though that's the card I actually wanted. The 4070 Gaming OC looked like a nice "semi-sensible downgrade"-option, although I usually don't go for these overbuilt coolers sitting on a middle of the road GPU. That said: I got the card for just €30 over what the cheapest 4070s would've cost (flash-sale) and I've been happy with my decision. The card will easily OC to nearly 3000 MHz and I also run it with an added 1000 MHz on the VRAM in Afterburner. Even with those settings, hotspot temps will only hit low 80°Cs while benchmarking - the card runs much cooler in games. Max power-limit is insanely high and can be set to 148% (around 300W if baseline is the 200W of the reference board). In the real world and with my OC, the card will draw just over 240W, even with power limit set to max. So... 300W is more of a "these go up to 11"-type of deal, but the card does allow higher power draw than the reference board.
On top of that: I really like the look of the card and it is very well built and feels solid. It is quite heavy (1.3, 1.4kg, IIRC) but it sits in my system without any sag. I probably wouldn't transport the PC with the card installed, though.
From my research into what manufacturer to go with: Do *not* buy the lower end MSI cards (Ventus line, basically). You'll pay more than for other brands, but the cooler MSI use on these isn't very well designed from what I found. It doesn't cover/touch all the VRMs for example and, IIRC, doesn't even allow airflow to those components. And that's true for both the 2 and 3 fan versions of the Ventus.

I play Fifa, GTA V, RDR 2, CS:GO, Forza Horizon. I'm upgrading from a GTX 1070.
I found the Gygabite 4070 Gaming at 735 euros and the 4070 TI at 900-950 euros.
I have got the same issue , but looking at both is went for the 4070 not the TI version , i play the same games and in 2k so for me it's a great fit
If you have a 2080 super and upgrade, this is 50% faster on rendering alone, and gives access to latest DLSS etc., uses 30 watts less power, and costs $100 less than the 2080 super when new.

I would still hold on to that 1080ti if I were you. The 4070 and below are terrible. At least try to save up to get a 4070ti.
@@ZackSNetwork yeah maybe I still have a little while before so might be worth to save a little longer
Don’t listen to him it’s a good card people just complaining about the price.
I am also still on my 1080 ti but it's getting rough. Not even consistent 144 FPS on Apex on the lowest settings. Yes sometimes the frames are around 200 but I am talking about consistens 144FPS without any drops. The 1080 ti is really getting outdated especially for newer games. It's just so hard to decide because I don't know if 40 series prices will drop anytime soon.
@@shanghaifunk. i feel you bro im in the same spot
The card is fine, but for close to 700 euro's I want something more than lower midrange.
If it had more RAM I would buy it, however I don't think this will age well, and with AMD improving software more and more over time I went for 7900XTX in the end.
This card makes the 7900 XT look good at 800 euros.... Sad times...
How you finding the 7900xtx?
@@RTSchofield it's arriving tomorrow, I can't wait. But everyone's experience will be different, and ofc depends what are you doing on your PC. But as far as history goes AMD ages better than Nvidia, and I'm not planning to change anything for next 5 years
@@nikolamijailovic599 hope you enjoy bro. Gonna be a beast of a machine!
Mate the 4070 is under £600, the 7900xtx is over £1000. You can't compare these cards!
Building a new PC will be upgrading from a GTX 970 to a 4070
I own an RX 5700 (Non XT) And I'm thinking about upgrading and try Nvidia for the first time and this card calls my attention however I've read a lot of divided opinions about it, I only have a 650w PSU So I'm not aiming for something that runs over 200w, I also have a Ryzen 5 5600x and I think it bottlenecks the GPU in arround 15 to 20% loss in performance, but even tho is still like 150% better than my RX 5700, what do you guys think? Should I jump to the RTX 4070 or should I wait for the 4060/4060ti to reveal? I'm not too much confident about those TBH.
Wouldn’t recommend a 4060 ti 8gb but do what you want
i'd go with the 4070 over the 4060 cards. 650w is plenty for a 4070
Its all great and all but this card costs : 724Eur at my local shop now. and in E-bay....around the same.
Just did my first PC build, and switched over to the 4070 after originally going with a 7800XT. Found a Gigabyte wind force model for the same price as the 7800 I had, and the addition of DLSS and better RT performance in single player games, plus the fact that it handles triple monitors in iRacing with a little more efficiency, made up for the 4gb of VRAM I'm giving up. COD runs worse, everything else seems to run better, and I got Alan Wake 2 for free! Thank god for the generous return policies at Micro Center!!
how did u get alan wake 2 free?
@@tanzero2726 I think the deal is good for another week, but it comes free with any 40 series card
Why did you return the 7800xt? When currently deciding between the two.
@@Daubinho As I mentioned, the big thing was the better triple monitor support for iRacing as this is going to power my sim racing rig. On top of that, DLSS and frame gen is much better on the NVIDIA cards right now, so I get better performance in the titles that support it. Add in the free copy of Alan Wake 2 and the lower power consumption, and it just made more sense for me.
This is no slight on the 7800 XT, however. It's a solid card and probably provides more bang for the buck for most users, and, now that the Alan Wake 2 deal is over, I don't know if I would have gone through the hassle of pulling the card and driving back to Microcenter to swap it out.
@@salkdhfpoahergpoahre1534 DLSS and frame gen are indeed better than FSR but the 7800xt doesn't need those to play most games at 1440p 60+fps. It doesn't struggle like the 4070 when it comes to VRAM. I think you made a horrible choice but you do you.
Anyone know the Hotspot and MEM Temps?
Where is the data for the rx 6900xt and the rx 6950xt? It seems kinda weird they went with a 192 bits wide memory bus for a "70 class" card. Why the sudden downgrade compared to previous generation 70 class cards? Hmmm I wonder.
I think the smarter move for AM4 owners is to buy a used 6800XT and a new 5800X3D. It can be done for around $700 with patient hunting. The 4070 is $600-650 alone while the 6800XT murders it in rasterization, has 4GB more VRAM, much wider memory bus and bandwidth, and did I mention you get one of the best CPUs on the planet to go with it for $100 more. New gen performance and longevity many hundreds less than a new gen rebuild.
Used vs new? I don't see that as a smarter move. If cost saving is your end goal, then 4070 runs at 185W average, while 6800 averages a 100 W more!! That's cost saving irrespective of your country's energy prices. In my country, this power differential is god send.
4070 is on par with the 6800xt and 3080 in rasterisation, has better features like dlss3 and better upscaling tech. Not to mention the 4070 has much better power consumption as well. Stop with your fanboyism and admit that both the cards have their ups and downs.
6800xt is old tech.
Sorry but the 4070 is superior to that 6800XT.
@@jal.ajeera I never bought a new GPU in 20 years so you might be right. I always paid hundred less a year or so after release used. I have a stack of my old GPUs right in my desk. Looking at them right now, I realize they all still work and i have no idea how much power they use just what PSU I need. Here is my ATI HD 4850 (lol, 500GB VRAM), AMD 7850, AMD R9 285, my old 1080 in my wife's PC, a 5600XT and a used 6800XT in a day or so. I sold my RTX 2070 for $750 in the ugly times. I still have that in my PC upgrade fund but I would never spend it on a 4070 12GB, not enough memory now, let alone a year from now.
of course is worth it!!! best value card
thank you so much for these videos!! doing a lot of research as I'm building my first ever PC!!! Really considering the 4070 since i wanna use it for gaming and streaming and this card fits my budget!
I've got a z390 board with a asus strix 2060s and a 9600k i5. will this card run on my setup
What is your PSU
I finna save for 4090
Considering it's trading blows with my 3080Ti in 1080p and 1440p and only falls a little behind at 4k. At 1/3 the price I paid for my 3080Ti, yeah, I'd say it's worth it! Oh and it does that using a lot less power.
this is the only card compatible with mini itx's though right?
nah 4090 technically is
I like the 4070's performance. Raw horsepower is enough to play games at 1440p. the only problem is vram which is not future proof. I don't want to be left wanting after 2-3 years.
You’ll be fine. Jesus here I am with a 1080ti just fine.
I don’t think 12gb of vram is gonna be obsolete in 2-3 years. Maybe 6+ years
@@grady7682 I swear everyone wants to run everything on epic 1440p or 4K. 12 gbs is good enough, my 1080ti was just fine for 7 or 6 whole years.
im on rx580 4gb and i can play every game for now, not ultra but medium and its ok
