  • I've been in Birmingham for the last few days, searching for signs of life at the Conservative Party conference. Is this a party of government or a party in chaos? What are they doing to attract new members? Where are all the Theresa May t-shirts? And why are people so scared of Jeremy Corbyn

Tories - pretty much "well we had to start from nothing" - which was way easier when there were things such as jobs for life, social housing, house prices that were 5 times cheaper so you didn't need to have a 30+ year mortgage, final salary pensions, affordable public transport and affordable gas and electric.
None of which these "entitled youngsters" will have ever known.

You can reference every current study that shows that "Millennials" are staying in more, are spending less and are saving more, and the majority are all too aware that they have to work hard to expect the same living standards as the boomer generation. Unfortunately even with those changes, they still can't afford property where they grew up even with combined incomes of £80k, they're still unable to get a mortgage over £300k. Which if you're in the home counties means you're forever in a 1 or 2 bed flat.
But I forgot we just need to work harder.

      When was that BTW?
at 48 in my time, , there was over 3 million unemployed in the 80's, year long miners strikes , IRA bombings , threat of imminent nuclear war , inflation that made wages worthless, , cheaper houses BUT mortgage interest rates of over 10% and higher (mine was fixed at 12% at the start)
social housing - now socially funded (rented) housing
final salary pensions were screwed by law changes (they were based on people leaving early not collecting) and not enough remain workers to fund them (YOU pay your grandfathers pension ALWAYS - the "pot" is a Myth)
"affordable" public transport , gas and electric were subsidies by taxes so high Micheal Cain left the country (just like U2 moving from Eire today)
little FACT for you, a family food bill used be over 50% of the family income - "back in the good old days"???

It doesn't make sense for the right to focus on young voters.
People tend to become more conservative as they get older, so the Tories don't need to appeal to young people because the Tory supporter base is wider. If they had policies for young people e.g. raising taxes for social services, then that would hit the middle-income households who disproportionately support the state and vote Tory, so they would actually lose votes overall.
That was the reasoning that I inferred. It's not about being out of touch, it's about getting enough votes to win.

Owen Jones is a likeable character, and pretty intelligent, but speaking as someone who leans left of centre, he gets it wrong on identity politics IMO. He should focus more on closing tax loopholes for the uber rich, renationalising utilities and the railways and creating greater opportunities for the young working class. Too many on the left are fixated on dividing people into tribes based on arbitary identity traits, like race, gender & sexuality, when in fact what a true solcialist should be doing is promoting the idea that we are all as one within a society, and not implying that certan groups should have special protections and rights. This approach causes division and resentment, which some would say is a deliberate tactic, but I'm inclined to think it's more born out of stupidity and a desperation to be seen as 'modern' and down with minorities. In their own way, the left lack pragmatism and vision a much as the conservative right do.

It’s taken years of dedicated and coordinated hard work for Tories to get the population of this country exactly where they want them - on zero hour contracts, living on the streets and reliant upon food banks, gross personal debt sustaining an economy for the richest, tolerating massive corporate remuneration, tolerating massive tax avoidance, in-work poverty, fear of old age destitution and loneliness, stratospheric rent with no protections, poor quality unaffordable housing, mental health ignored, under-funded state education, a NHS that needs people dying on trolleys in corridors before it’s given inadequate investment, student life-long debt, working young adults needing Help to Buy (inflate) to afford a f*cking house!, and toleration of a vile Tory owned press that has regular meetings in No10 to coordinate attacks on our democracy .....this, and much much more, is a Tory success story that needs celebrating not correcting with silly and pathetic Corbyn-like ideas. love that older woman who said these kids today expect everything without working for it.. just to say kids today only expect the same as what she had, you know, access to reasonably priced rental accomodation, access to the housing ladder, access to free education, access to job security and a decent pension.. you know.. those things that people of her generation had and supposedly worked hard for! hahaha.. also funny that when Owen asked why people didn't like Corbyn it was generic answers "he'll take us back to a communist corbyn land" or "I don't like his policies".. not "I don't agree with re-nationalisation" or "i don't agree with his stance on collective bargaining".

GordonFreeman The Left uses reason and logic to explain it’s policies, which are proved to be more successful in creating a just society and a narrowing of the gap between rich and poor. Unfortunately, the Tories and their right wing friends are nothing but thugs and bullies who sow division and impoverish the majority of people because they are selfish, greedy and materialistic with no sense of common humanity. The prevailing system in the UK and in the US is Disaster Capitalism which profits the wealthy whilst impoverishing millions worldwide with proxy wars and sanctions. This corrupt system bankrupts the real economy at regular intervals (the next financial crash is imminent) and destroys the environment.

      1. Ven has a primarily capitalist economy with a socialist government, your fuck up was in presuming the flavour of the government.
      2. In the economics profession systems are defined by their method of production, for example:
      Slave> Master - slave system
      Lord> Serf - feudalism
      Employer>Employee - capitalism.
It does not matter if it is the state who is the top down employer, or private. They are both forms of capitalism, state capitalism, and private capitalism.
      en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/state_capitalism
      3. 80% of the Venezuelan economy is private capitalism, with the remaining 20% made up of state capitalism and some democratic socialism.
      4. Further example of how it is utterly stupid to think X government = X economy. China has a communist government with a 40/60 split state and private capitalist economy.
      5. Venezuela is not a dictatorship. The right have been repeatedly invited to stand their candidates at election. They refuse because they know they are far from the majority in the nation. One of their leading figures did stand at the last election and he was reprimanded and forced not to stand by his own damned side, because if he did and lost, it breaks the narrative the mostly right wing private billionaire owned Venezuelan press spins to our press.
      6. Is is a shit show? yes, but for none of the reason you've had your mind manufactured into believing. Also keep in mind Venezuela has the worlds second largest oil reserves, the west would like them back.
Thus concludes the lesson on how your head got stuck so far up your own arse.

They simply focus on labour all the time, and that works when labour aren't doing very well, but when labour /is/ doing well, all reason to support them falls through. The labour party is different. Yes they do talk about the tories being bad, but it isn't everything they do. They talk about how they are better, how they are good. They talk more about the things they will do to make the country better, and less on what the tories will do to make the country worse

Socialism works worldwide and has done for the last 100 years.
Soviet Union, Cuba, Vietnam, Korea, China and so on.
Elements of the left wing ideology prevalent in capitalist nations, such as nationalised health service and the like, are some of the most popular pieces of infrastructure in the world.

The NHS, which has done a great job of keeping alive a huge cohort of people born before 1960, who then vote for the Tories and Brexit. Oh the irony!

I find it almost humorous how these young, rather clueless, ideologically driven, liberal arts, etc college/University educated/indoctrinated tools really seriously, imagine that they are actually working class.
The Labour party have had little truck with, interest in, or ideas to help the actual REAL working folk of the UK. The ones who actually DO get on with shit, and build, manufacture, maintain, repair, clean, cook and keep this fucking country actually going.
Whilst entitled, spoiled, whiny wet behind the ears little shitehawks like Owen denigrate, belittle and look down on normal people, who have known fuck all but hard graft and tough lives. But Hey! They are now old. So fuck 'em. What do they know. They didn't get our "education". LOL.
I would love to see Owen and his ilk actually have to do a real job of work. I doubt they would last the day out.
Send the wanker's on a North sea oil rig, or North Atlantic trawler, or a small building site,or down the pit, if we have any left at all.
The last election I very, very nearly voted Conservative for the first time in my life. I could not bring myself do do so.
However, as things stand, I can never foresee me voting Labour again. Things would need to change markedly. And I'm not talking about going even more Socialist/Marxist/Communist. And I'm certainly not talking about going more ridiculously PC, feminist, open borders, and anti free speech.
The real working class of this country, and the mid to lower middle class really are stuck between a rock and a hard place to shitelately, and have been for some time.
Ironically, it will be the self same grafting toiling working folk who will have to dig in even deeper, to get us out of any shithole we end up in. Again. But then who else is there to do it? To put in all the graft again? I doubt it is going to be Owen and his chuckling, giggling chums. Yet remarkably, and utterly unself awarely he sees himself as being totally the opposite of the Tory posh boys. He is at best the other side of the very same coin. And the similarities and parallels are quite startling.
