  • Has the LGBT movement been hijacked by big business? The LGBT movement was once about protest and struggle, winning many of the rights LGBT people have today.

But now it's become a convenient way for dodgy corporations to 'pinkwash' their reputations - and there's a complacency that all the battles have been won. Is it time to put the politics back into LGBT?

LGBT Pride is about gay rights, not about left wing politicians generally. All people, regardless of their political views generally, should be welcome.

I had the pleasure of attending the pride parade this year, it was a little commercialised but still an amazing experience.
I carried my 'Positive+ and Proud' banner and was cheered on by almost everyone (save a few clearly right wing bigots).
My boyfriend and I have a polyamorous relationship and he met a delightful young black man at the parade, good times all round!
What was particularly inspiring for me was the number of people bringing their children to the parade, amazing! We have to show them how vibrant and diverse the gay community is while they're still young, know what I mean? ;) Young minds make for easy moulding.
Though I must say, I was dismayed at the distinct lack of interracial relationships at the parade, I thought we were breaking boundaries here? Love is love is love.

I think it's very sad that people think Pride is dead. I took part in the march on Saturday and it was absolutely overwhelming to see so many people able to be themselves without fear of judgement. It showed me that there must be so many people in hiding every day and that is why we continue to march for Pride. It's a show of solidarity with places like Istanbul where marchers were blasted with water canons. it's a celebration of the progress that has been made and it's a beacon for those who continue to be forced into hiding who they are.

***** It's about bringing down the entire system of capitalist oppressors. Today we march through London, tomorrow we march through the school and education system, installing these values of acceptance in the minds of the young. If we can make people's identity no longer about such antiquated notions of nation and people, then we can make their identity about their sexuality, their race, their gender etc.
Once all boundaries are broken down, we will rebuild society in a fairer, more accepting and diverse image.

Why do we need Pride anymore? We have gay marriage, equal rights etc, so what is there left to stand up for? When I was younger and first came out, yes, I needed to make a fuss about it for a while, get it out of my system so to speak, but then I kind of got over it and decided to focus on more important things like the meaning of life and other such pressing topics. Yet year after year, Pride attracts the same sexuality-obsessed people who for some strange reason, need to mince through central London wearing tight lycra shorts screaming "2,4,6,8, is your boyfriend really straight". Honestly, It really makes me want to book in for some electric shock treatment.

Megasizer yeah, sure you can. And as this video shows, the marches we have now may not be the most appropriate. But a march is very powerful because it draws huge numbers of people. It is a moment of high visibility. You see that you are not alone more clearly than ever. You see how beautiful all those like you are. And for the straight people, it shows we are here in numbers and we will not be erased or oppressed.

I dont know where this global 'pride' brand got started but l remember in Manchester we had 'Mardi gras Manchester' and wasn't just about gay rights, it was just a good party. All l see now is vested interested taking over the show, controlling the flow of money and in the end selling out in the worst possible way. l dont get involved in the political side of this because l dont believe anyone has rights. no one has the right to anything over anyone else. the whole idea of 'rights' is a misnomer. Vulnerable people need protection, yes. but what people really need to fight is bullshit.

Owen, I attended meetings of the Gay Liberation Front in New York in 1970. It was a revolutionary organization, and was eventually supplanted by the Gay Activists Alliance, a "reformist" organization focused not on changing society but on winning limited rights for gay people only. The same split happened in ACT UP when I was active in ACT UP CHICAGO in 1988 and 1989. ACT UP CHICAGO and many ACT UP chapters all over the United States split into two organizations. ACT UP Windy City consisted of the "treatment activists" who left ACT UP CHICAGO to concentrate on AIDS issues only. I was never satisfied to fight only for rights for people such as myself, as if we can truly be free in a society that oppresses all kinds of people. It is only by unity of oppressed peoples, and thoroughgoing change of society, that gay people can truly be free.

I'm not sure I agree with your conclusions....
Firstly why can't you hold hands in the street in this country if you're LGBT - I just don't think that's true.
Secondly you conclud that PRIDE has been taken over by big corporates, but then say that the old spirit of PRIDE is alive and well "...as we've seen today" - that's not the true, what we saw in your video was people burying the true meaning of PRIDE because it feels gone. Lost forever. Ridden over roughshod by corporates trying to make themselves look good with their equality agendas.

Going to post this every video until it gets answered XD
    Owen,
Adam Smith wrote of the cosy relationship between big business and government, the reduced opportunities for small businesses and artisans, the importance of empowering consumers, the importance of decent wages and universal education, and that too much power is vested at the very top echelons of society.
Many of your criticisms of our current economic model are, at least superficially, similar to those made by Adam Smith in his critique of mercantilism.
My question is this: How come you chose a socialism as the solution and not the [Smithsonian] free market?

Really good to go into this. On a somewhat related subject, there were protests today in London for the Dominican Republic to stop the ethnic cleansing of around 250,000 black Haitian people. It'd be great if you could bring some light to this issue as British media altogether has totally ignored this. I and others have written to MPs, but nothing has been done and most likely nothing will be done. It would just be great if you could have a look around the internet and find out what's going on and make a video. Thanks for this video too!

I watched Pride for the first time on Saturday, I am 39 & gay. Politically I am centre-right, although I didn't vote in the GE, I have been in the past a member & candidate for the Tory party. The reason I had never before been to a Pride march before is because I didn't want or like the politics and felt my Sexuality was frankly my business. My view has party changed by the shameful events in Russia under Putin and realised the rights I have has a gay man in this country and pleased I don't live in Russia.
Many on the left I feel you can't be Gay & be Tory or even UKIP. I can say in the 5 Tory Party conferences I attended between 2002 & 2007 I never witnessed any homophobic comments and had some great piss-ups.
Anyway regards Pride itself it should be a celebration of Freedom of all people to live their lives in the way that they choose. I have to say I don't agree with everything this Gov had done, that's why I didn't 't vote for it in May, but it drives the left mad that it was a conservative led Government that fought for "equal" marriage and delivered it. It means that they can't bang on about the "evil homophobic Tories" any more.
I enjoyed Pride itself great to see straight, gays, everyone having a fun time, it showed the best of this country has to offer, so why should it be "political"?

I must say I did worry about this when I saw all the corporate logos become rainbow last week. I shouldn't be so cynical but it seemed a bit like there might be a bit of business strategy in that - trying to win the LGBTQ pound. Its like when facebook allowed people to have all the different gender options. Its obviously great they did that but I really don't think it was about equality so much as it was about tracking the interests of the community and selling it to corporations so they'd know their target markets.

the commercialisation of pride was inevitable, due to the consumerist culture we have in Western society. the only way to fix the problem would be to reset pride altogether... unless we just ban companies and only allow unions/charities/lgbt rights groups?
it's a bit extreme... if companies are willing to not just talk the talk of supporting lgbt people but also walk the walk, and ensure equal rights between their workers and their consumers, then i guess it's ok for companies to support/sponsor pride events?

This is my problem with Pride: Yes, it shouldn't be about profit, but why do you think my personal life should be politicised? It should be neither. I worry that Pride is looking for future avenues to bank on, so that it can continue, despite its future obsolescence. Much like many bureaucracies of the government have to extend their influence beyond their remit, to continue their own existence. LGBT seems to be going down the same path. Thanks, I don't want my private life made into a political statement. There is much more to worry about.

I can't speak for how the United States is different from other countries in this regard, but my short response to "Has LGBT Pride been hijacked?" would be Yes. When I go to a Pride parade in a larger city, such as New York, NY, it does come across a massive publicity stunt for corporations. I do not share this opinion about all Pridefests, though. For smaller fests, I find them to be amazing chances for smaller businesses to demonstrate their willingness to engage LGBT people where we're at. Local non-profits and hospitals also have the opportunity to put their best foot forward about what programs they have. While these are also available at the NYC Pridefests, it's disappointing to have to watch them compete for attention with banks and the like. Here in New Jersey, the very neighbor of New York, I can think of 4 Pridefests off the top of my head that are much better opportunities for agencies to network and organize, which I believe is essential to how entities that serve different vulnerable populations ought to operate. But somehow, they are nonetheless overshadowed by NYC Pride to most of the public.

It's the surely the separation between the abstract and the material. By companies saying that they "support" LGBTQ (which in most cases involves a complete omission of Q and subscribes to a cis and particularly white hierarchy) their involvement in struggle is deemed complete. In reality, the assertion of an idea is the beginning of a struggle, a struggle against the material ways in which oppression manifests itself everyday both overtly and subliminally and this doesn't end with an empty pledge. As pointed out the actions of such multinationals are not only contrary to the idea of genuine equality and the end of oppression but often have adverse effects on the LGCBTQ community directly; the slashing of mental health budgets, trade with homophobic countries etc This leads to a continuation of division albeit in slightly different terms but all oppression is contrary to genuine human emancipation.

Its a /good/ thing that the fight isn't so controversial anymore, that the worst part of the battle has been won; thats the point corporations feel happy to take advantage of it and that there won't be any backlash for them supporting it.
But there is still a lot of work to do before all repressed minorities (or not so minorities) are given equal rights and treated fairly (or repressed equally, at least), and we shouldn't lose sight of that. The size of London's Pride can be a fantastic platform but it also makes it harder for everyone to act as one and to spread the message through about what needs to be done. There can sometimes be little splinters and problems within the minorities between each other (eg. lesbians/gays exhibiting biphobia and repressing bisexuals).

    • @johnlondonbimeetup7961
      @johnlondonbimeetup7961 9 років тому

John LondonBi I believe its essential to keep a balance between corporations and the actual minority communities that will be able to act more independently and not need their managers' acceptance of the pride plan, when a company runs it its easy for the real issues to get swept under the carpet and the corporate pinkwash branding and marketing to overshadow any real strife. Who are the people coming up with the Pride message within each company? Is it even any of the LGBTQ+.... members who had the need to march originally and their voice to be heard?

The problem is that the majority of social movements end up clustered around a group of middle class (or higher) white women and a few others hanging on. those same priviliged white women tend to bring on board people from their circles which inevitably leads to a more corporatist and classist system.
this inevitably leads to either fractures or the co-opting of equality groups by those who talk "for" a group rather than talking "as" a group.

A quick look at the list of registered groups walking the London pride march reveal pretty clearly the majority of representatives are LGBT interest groups, public services, charities and unions.
The corporate presence in American Gay Pride marches are much more prevalent but tends to be justified by either a local presence accompanied with an historic activist role in the promotion of rights in the work place OR by being a global brand which can push the pro gay message globally. Unfortunately that's part of where the dialogue currently is.
The corporate presence in the London Gay Pride presumably follows the same reasoning.
However i agree that it's an unimaginative downer that the main source of colour, glitz and glamour in a pride march today comes from corporate flyers, flags and slogans. If they are going to be present they aught to be forced to compete with each other via a carnivalesque sense of fancy dress and presence.

Reading through more of the comments, I find myself agreeing very strongly with those that are saying that the problem with this video is its flagrant display of leftism and the fact that those of us on the center right apparently would not be welcome here. I'm a proud Conservative, and I am also gay. My sexuality has absolutely nothing to do with my political beliefs. The left has had its fair share of bigots and haters as well, I don't see why the lefties on here seem to think that the left has some kind of monopoly on minority groups or special interests like this.

In the US corporate support against segregation type ant-gay legislation passed by the US state of Indiana forced its legislature to repass and rephrase its law within a 72 hour period! We should not underestimate the power of corporate allies. In the US business interests trump religious bigotry.

I don't understand why people feel a need to make their sexuality public. LGBTH would seem to be more inclusive. As for the lack of politic... there's little left to shout about... little less discrimination to fight.... When Women won the right to vote... there was still much to do but less to march in the streets about. It has become a street party through natural progression.

Great video, but for me Pride has been about both, the political and the fun.
The thing is, each year in the 80's/90's we would hear that pride was in jeopardy because each year previous it made a massive loss. This was mostly because people were too tight to chuck a couple of pounds in to the collection buckets.
So yes, in an ideal world Pride wouldn't need corporate sponsors, but the Pink Pound rules, even if we're too stingy to pay for our own pride.

Where, where cant you walk hand in hand with your partner in Britain? I mean I'm sure there are places, but Owen said most places which i think is kind of absurd and I say this having lived and grown up in a small conservative town where no-one would say a word if two men walked down the street hand in hand.

  • @breadonitsown8950

I never thought I'd agree so much in principal with Owen Jones, but I do here. He's right about pride losing its political edge. However, shamelessly turning this into an anti-Tory video when it was supposed to be about the issue of Pride and its message was very low. Let's not forget which party actually delivered equal marriage rights. The video creates a strong impression that the LGBT community is firmly anti conservative, and I think this is totally wrong. It is material like this that perpetuates that damaging and harmful idea of "gay culture" --- the idea that there can be such a thing as a standard set of beliefs and practices that members of the LGBT community should be following. Sexual orientation is just that --- sexual. It begins and ends right there. It does not and must not determine political affiliation, interests, life choices or anything like that. My personal problem with Pride is that it is put forward as this tremendous display of what it "means" to be gay, which is then perceived as people in pink feather boas or outrageous costumes walking down the street, or blokes in leather leading their guys on leashes etc etc. For some of us, that's not who we are, and we resent not being given a voice.

I agree with your assessment. It is a mixed affair, with many only being there for a party, but the amount of people there with political banners, complaining about the lack of politics, disprove themselves by their very presence. Murdoch's Sky is a prime example of bigots getting on the bandwagon though. At least one employee fell for their obvious nonsense.

Owen due to recent events what are your views on foreign policy? The dreadful acts that fascist militants have commited against holidaymakers in Tunisia and (often neglected by the right wing media) the mosque bombings in Kuwait. How would you deal with the evil facist isis that threaten free speech democracy and basic human rights?

Really interesting video! Love what you're doing so far on the channel. Just a thought though, surely it's good to be able to have a mix of the "corporate pride" along with maintaining the traditional values? If big business is good at only one thins, it is giving salience to an issue and if they aid us in providing a platform to continue voicing our need for change, then who are we to complain?

    • @TheTwigCrackedAnd
      @TheTwigCrackedAnd 9 років тому

Dylan Redding Well, the problem is that having all these companies march in Pride means we gloss over the realities. In the UK 35% of employees will remain in the closet. Basically, corporations' focus on profit means they will always sacrifice people + the environment, and it's the most vulnerable that suffer, notably LGBT people. Starbucks was at the front of the parade. They dont pay their workers a living wage and i can guarantee a big proportion of these are LGBT people struggling to get by. (minimum wage info:civilrightsdocs.info/pdf/minimumwage/lgbt-minimum-wage.pdf)

Pride "commercialisation" is purely a function of increasing LGBT acceptance.
What LGBT rights do you want to "protest"? What rights do LGBT not have now?
Also, Pride should be for everyone, not just left-wing people.

Martin Luther King Jr one of the greatest equal rights leader would of never supported equal marriage rights for homosexuals, “If any earthly institution or custom conflicts with God’s will, it is your Christian duty to oppose it. You must never allow the transitory, evanescent demands of man-made institutions to take precedence over the eternal demands of the Almighty God.” -Martin Luther King, Jr........“In contrast to ethical relativism, Christianity sets forth a system of absolute moral values and affirms that God has placed within the very structure of this universe certain moral principles that are fixed and immutable.” -Martin Luther King, Jr.
