Owen Jones meets Jess Phillips | 'I would knife Jeremy Corbyn in the front not the back'

  • Jess Phillips was elected to parliament in May 2015 election and has already built a reputation as someone who says what she thinks. She's no Corbynite but says she would roll up her sleeves and do everything she can to make him a success. Even so, she says, if it gets to the point where she believes Jeremy Corbyn is harming the Labour party rather than helping it, she won't be plotting behind the scenes but out in the open.

      +U WOT, HUGH WATT In all honesty, she has received misogynistic attacks such as threats to rape her etc. which are absolutely disgusting and uncalled for, the people who said those things are rightly called sexist bullies even though they're a noisy minority. However I'm not sure I'd be labeled a misogynist at all, closest to that I'd get would be if I called her a word that rhymes with hunt but she's also a bit of a word that sounds like Rick but with a P in front of it. Anyway she's a thoroughly nasty person and seems like a careerist who's willing to abandon principals to get elected, although I do somewhat appreciate her honesty about it.

      +Sir Amic Varze Yeah, I'm sure if all these MPs just lied to us about what we all know is going on then everything would be fine. You all praise Corbyn for his honesty and for holding to his principles and rebelling against past leaders, but now you want all the people you disagree with to lie and drop all of their own values to subscribe to his.

    • @DJMavis
      @DJMavis 8 років тому +2

      +dumbledora theexplorer there's a huge difference between lying and saying what she said.
      She might have discussed that having open debate rather than a top down dictatorship as it was under Blair was a good thing and that disagreements are normal. my brother and I have fairly similar views on things, but if we disagree it doesn't make him the enemy. it means we discuss things, try to see each other's point of view, try to convince the other to change.
      she could easily paint it in a positive light. she could not discuss it so readily if she can't. but she wanted to, that much was obvious. and the fact she claims she is still behind the leadership and would only attack head on whilst trying (and failing ) to veil her attack makes her a hypocrite.

    • @dumbledoratheexplorer6721
      @dumbledoratheexplorer6721 8 років тому +2

      You are asking her to spin everything when Jeremy Corbyn literally stands in front of signs saying "straight talking. Honest politics."
      The reality is what is happening isn't just "disagreement" and it isn't normal. The party is imploding because there is no leadership. She's also a backbencher, she isn't in the shadow cabinet, she can say whatever she wants. She has the same freedom to speak that Jeremy Corbyn had when he sat on the back bench under Blair and Brown. It is completely hypocritical to expect her to be Corbyn's salesman when she doesn't believe it.

    Corbyn stated that he backed the shoot to kill when an attack was clearly imminent rather than just guess work, as with the unfortunate Jean Charles de Menezes who was murdered by the police. I'm far from a pacifist (longing for the days of duels, when men where men) but on this one I'm 100% on Mr Corbyn's side.

    I think it says a lot when she can't believe that he didn't spend at least some of his 30+ years in politics thinking about what he would do in power.
    To this generation of politicians it's actually strange that he might not have gotten into politics because he wanted to rise up the ranks and eventually be in a position of power.
    I've heard Bernie Sanders field the same sort of remarks - he's running for President in the US and has similarly spent 40+ years in politics. These guys got into politics because they gave a damn; they were activists first, politicians second.

    at least Corbyn has principles. He's shown himself to be a man who stands for what he believes in for years. I don't see why people dislike someone so much for having strong beliefs. Ed Milliband (and most other politicians) just seemed like the kind of guy who read a script and told people what he thought they might want to hear to get into power. +00realitycheck Annoyingly, I typed out a long answer and lost it by accidentally changing the page. Sigh.
      A more brief version:
      Her pro-woman identity politics is mostly irrelevant and not talked about by most of the public, but she thinks it's really important--yet she complains that Corbyn's focus on Trident and war is what no one cares or talks about. Other than this being inconsistent, it's also patronising.
      I think that she exudes bitterness that a middle-class white man won the leadership. She seems to resent this.
      She claimed in an talk with Jacob-Rees Mogg that if Corbyn won by a large majority, that she would get behind him as it would be an insult to the activists that helped her. She's since whined about him in public. By all means--she should offer her criticism in private, as she clearly has done. Then she undermines his leadership and presents a front of disunity--whilst claiming Corbyn needs to show more leadership and unify the party. That seems pretty dishonest on her part.
      I could really go on. I've not liked her ever since the C4 programme with her and Jacob-Rees Mogg, where Mogg--a stereotypical toff--comes out looking better than the "ordinary working class" Phillips.

If she was the employee of a company that I took over, she would be made redundant, more likely fired. How can any organisation work with someone as totally destructive and disloyal as that? Impossible! And for her to follow and believe the press spun version of what Jeremy said about shooting on suspicion and not what he actually said, the woman is brainless or she is hiding her brains in an unmentionable place! Very sorry Jeremy! What an unbelievable woman. Great interview Owen, people needed to see what she is really like! I can't stand the whole "I speak my mind" thing being regarded as a positive character trait. Just makes me think of Cartman on South Park doing his "I do what I want" bit. It's a lack of discretion and respect for others when you are notorious for "speaking your mind". Telling the leader of the party that you'd knife him in the front rather than the back is just appalling and not something to brag about. It's just reeks of bad attitude and conflated ego.
    She blames sexism for being obstructive and then goes on to say:
    "I don't have all the fancy high falutin economic or academic answers"
    Well maybe as a politician you should be able to provide academic answers to points you yourself are raising. Maybe that is the reason you feel you feel you are treated differently. Not being able to come up with the goods when necessary. Berating people to mask the fact that you can't grasp what's going on is not something to be proud of.
    This is exactly the sort of thing that pushes me away from Labour, and I should be their absolute prime demographic target. I have no doubt if I were to Google this woman all her damaging quotes will be all over the papers websites now. The PR people need to put a muzzle on her as this is an own goal for labour.

    Thanks Owen for bringing Jess to our attention. I found her likeable but really frustrating. Doesn't she realise that she damages the Labour Party more with her naive view that she should just "tell it like it is" and thereby show the party to be unsettled and divided. By all means speak up to the powers that be but show a supportive face to the rest of us fgs. We all have to learn how to compromise wherever we work. Nowhere sees things exactly the same way as we do in our jobs but we get nowhere if we pull tantrums and, indeed, get pleasure out of telling stories about how we "stuck it to the boss". She has much going for her if she could focus and be a positive force. Keep it up Owen. The more I hear these people the more impressed I am with you and your tolerance and insight.

She is there to represent her constituents, Owen., not herself. Not one of your better interviews, mate. "I'll do anything to make the Labour party win" -- This is what is wrong with modern politics. Or politics at all. You shouldn't do whatever it takes to get elected; you should take an honest look at the world around you and form ideas on how to improve it, and stick to your principles regardless of moneyed interests or what the latest polls say. But that's a radical idea, I know.

    Just want to point out, and this is not an attack on her entire character, but here view on feminism: "I don't want to have to do or put up with things that men don't have to." This is a conflation of gender disparity with sexism, and sets the whole debate off course. She has to sit down to go the the loo, which men don't. This is one, simple example. But the point remains that simply because something is gender specific, does not mean that it is harmful.

    Chip anyone?
    What I find frustrating about Jess Phillips is she rails against perception rather than campaigning on issues.
    She feels she is treated "differently" because she is a woman. Well the first thing that springs to my mind after following her is her combative attitude and her concentration on issues which are "besides the point" which is a self fulfilling and viscous circle of her attitude met with a response that despairs at her not focusing on the issue which will only increase her speaking out of frustration, rather than dealing with an issue. Passion is good but this is frustration which is something else.
    She is too easily lead by what she "feels" her party and its leader "should" be doing in the eyes of the "media". It is not Corbyn's fault that the media will spin the fact he says he is against in principle a shoot to kill policy but not against killing terrorists posing an imminent threat - Phillips instead focusses on the spin of that story rather than the substance of his reply in which she should feel emboldened that she has a leader whom is prepared to think and also make clear he of course would do everything to protect the public.
    Again with the "red book" fiasco. She ignores the fact that John McDonnell was actually using the red book to poke fun at the conservatives for selling off our rail network to dictatorial socialist country "China". She obviously thinks her party should not be governed by principle but by sound byte.
    High time she focused on policy, rather than bandwagonnig or being ignorant of the serious points being made.
