- Victorville California is currently one of the largest airplane parking lots in the world due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In this video, in coordination with air traffic control (ATC), I fly a dramatic low approach in my Grumman Tiger over the closed runway that is currently home for over 400 unused jets. After that, we fly over the peak bloom of the Antelope Valley poppy fields to see an explosion of color in the Mojave Desert.
Background:
Global airline travel has been dramatically affected as a result of the corona virus and as a result, the airlines have been temporarily storing their fleet at select locations to wait out the current crisis. Southern California Logistics Airport (KVCV) in Victorville, California is one of the primary storage depots for Delta, Southwest and FedEx. It is also one of the largest airplane boneyards in the USA. ComAv is the company that stores and manages these aircraft. It is home to dozens of Boeing 737 Max jets as a result of their recall in 2019. In addition, you can find many other jets, including Boeing 747, 757, and 767 aircraft. There are also Airbus A310, A320 and McDonnell-Douglas MD-10 and MD-11 aircraft. KVCV was recently also the home for the next generation Air Force One Boeing 747-8 jets.

Every spring in the deserts of Southern California, many colorful flowers bloom and present an amazing display across the desolate and rugged landscapes. While usually an extremely popular location for selfies, many of these locations are closed down because of the corona virus and unable to be seen by many.
I want to give a big shout out to the tower controllers at KVCV that were kind enough to let me do a flyover on the closed runway to see all the airplanes.

As a Southwest Airlines crewmember, I got very emotional watching this. Just when I thought I'd seen all of the parked planes, more would pop up. These are my babies.
I never flew Southwest. Most of my flights were Delta, AA, United and Frontier. Nothing against Southwest, just never had the opportunity. I love flying. The skies are noticeably silent these days. I feel for you guys.

As a flight attendant from Southwest, it is sad to see so many of any aircraft sitting out there, no matter what airline or company they represent. Like you said, they hold so many stories within the wingspan of each and every one and have so many more to make. They just need to take off and have the opportunity to do so. I have faith that will happen. That is all we have. Thank you so much for doing this and sharing this with us. As surreal as it is to see, it is beautiful as well.

Imagine the mechanical attention every single plane is going to require before take off again and the enormous TRAFFIC JAM!
In reality, every single aircraft there required attention throughout the time they were in storage, not just to return them back to service. There were special preparations that had to be made to put the aircraft in a preservation state and storage, and there were mandatory checks that had to be performed on them every week, every month, every three months, and so on for whatever length of time the aircraft spent there (some of them more than three years). I was one of the many people who supported this effort, many several trips there during the pandemic and my son was one of hundreds of people who lived temporarily there for more than three years performing all these required maintenance tasks during storage.
And that's just a drop in the bucket, compared to the number that are parked world wide.

As a pilot for one of the majors who just deposited a jet to the now full KSBD, thank you for your video. The music overlay and cinematography with controller audio was perfect. I really liked your poetic description of all the idle jets at KVCV. Airline pilots like myself whom often complain about long days, unruly east coast controllers, bad weather, and the hazards of being on the road half of every month suddenly have an appreciation for what we took for granted. Air travel is a true modern marvel and should be cherished.

Some One I work for Southwest and our pilots that parked jets there took a van to Ontario and flew out of there to wherever they live. In addition they didn’t fly all those jets in on the same day. One of our guys did a good video on taking a plane there from Phx. I will see if I can find it.

@@kbs1212. You can only say that if you believe in population control. Thousands upon thousands are dependent on jobs the airlines provide. For example many companies make replacement parts that wear out, well those planes just sitting there they are not wearing out. Lets not forget the mechanics, fuel trucks, and etc., more or less the thousands that work behind the scenes you and I never see.

@@fpvangel4495 many will be empty apart from the flight crews, for various reasons they need to keep them flying.
For example to keep the pilots licenses in date, if they don't fly with a given period they must go through expensive retraining.
Many airports insist the airlines maintain agreed traffic otherwise the airline can lose their slots.
It's also expensive and time consuming to take an airliner out of moth balls

If cars break apart when parked lot of time, imagine what time does to planes. Having a parked plane may be more expensive than keeping it airborne. These aircraft probably wont work again.

Not that much so. Just start from the end closest to the other runway, taxi-them over and take off like any other flight. It just takes a while. It'd only start using unreasonable amounts of fuel and producing logistical issues if you suddenly wanted to get them all out at once... Or out of order, I guess.

Gander, Newfoundland had that problem on 9/11 after American airspace was closed down and all flights grounded. Everything still in the air over the Atlantic had nowhere to go, if they couldn't turn back they had to land somewhere.

Good point. If they parked by size/class well, they could just pull from the lots of similar planes as they need to RTS and not have any blocked planes.

I dont think any of them are blocked in. They look carefully aligned so they can be pulled out by one of those trucks that tug airplanes
When the time comes to get them back in service, they will start with the ones at the front of the lines, bringbyhosr back in service, then as demand increases, will ststy moving backward.

Fun video! I shared the San Andreas Fault video with a friend, and he shared this with me. I took my family out to see the poppies one spring and it had snowed the night before. @@dell7054 If Commercial Airliners sit for over two weeks. They need to be certified..Why some are flying theirs every 3 days. Even for a few hours. As the cost benefit outweighs the cost to have each one certified again. This includes pilots...Which can add up too huge cost and lost time. As Gates can be lost under their contracts with airports...
@@dell7054 aircraft have different levels of storage so to speak. The DL birds are short term and they will NOT need to be re-certified. They can all leave within 24-48 hours of being recalled. There are people there that are keeping the maintenance of each bird up to date.

Thank you. I respect that you exercised your right to fly in your private aircraft but understood you were in public air space and requested permission before your fly over of a public facility. Truly amazing in not just the imagery you were able to show us but your character as well.

Coming from a Southwest employee. Though I still have a job thanks to our great upper management making some great business decisions. This still hurts to see. I love my company. We are company that has always put its employees and customers above everything else. I wouldn't want to work for any other company. At Southwest we are all family. Can't wait till these aircrafts are back flying at full capacity.
Yes, I have always liked SW's management style of keeping employees at the top of their game. I've owned SW stock for more than 15 years, whereas Delta, JetBlue and others I bought and sold. I'm convinced SW will be the biggest U.S. airline period, not just for domestic travel, as I understand is the case now.

This is what I say about every single L-1011 that has been "parked" or "dismantled." The TriStar still owns the skies. Even from the ground...
Most TriStars have been turned into scrap metal at this point.
As a passenger who likes to fly Southwest and enjoyed flying with my former employer (Delta), it just breaks my 'man's heart' to see all of that metal on the ground. I've driven passed Victorville Airport and had only seen it from ground level. Thanks for letting us see it from above.
What a breath taking views thanks for sharing. It is sad to see all these planes parked. I got to take my first ever flight back in September of 2019 to Detroit. It was an amazing experience. It was a little scary at first but it was so cool what you can see from an airplane!

Thank you for this video. It really touched me from multiple perspectives. The visuals were great as was the audio and the story of these planes being stored was a story I haven't heard before your video. But the part that touched me the most was about how all those planes had millions of stories to tell!! So very true. From boring business trips to family events, good and bad, to the trips that are taken as a once in a lifetime event. All so true and I very much miss all of that. Being in the industry and having close-close friends still in the airline industry. Looks like just after 9-11. As myself being an airline pilot, when able to fly again after 9-11, we had 1 person on board and cleared to land at PHX, 20 miles from the north for months. Thank you for the video post, outstanding job.

Great video. Thanks for making and sharing. I live in nearby Adelanto and see the planes parked out there and wonder how many are there. Also, great narrative about the planes too, made me tear up a little, thinking about all the memories people have from riding on those planes.

CricketLover Victorville doesn’t have commercial flights, it’s purely a storage and maintenance airport. They’re making money hand over fist on this deal.
SEATAC charges Southwest $5000/day, first 24 hours on the ramp free.
CricketLover the cheapest parking I’ve seen it’s $6 a night for aircraft not based at that airfield, and $1 or $2 for aircraft from that airfield. If you think parking is not profitable, you know nothing.

@jcoghill that is what's so sad about all of this. We can understand the average Joe living paycheck to paycheck but you wonder what these companies did with all that money. Yes some have low margins but the have access to better financial advisor than the average person.

Instead of investing in planes and paying off debt, they took on more debt, they did stock buy backs and gave the exec's raises. To a large extent, they made their own problems. I suspect that SWA didn't do that, they've always taken a longer term view of things. Like buying fuel futures when prices are low. I have three relatives working for SWA out of Denver, still employed.

@@Tampa0123456789 For the most part, the airlines business is very tight and low margin. Lots of competition, lots of overhead, lots of maintenance, and unpredictable fuel costs. I think Southwest innovated a lot in terms of hedging their fuel costs, not sure if others have done quite as well in that regard.

I'm in Houston Texas. I live on a flight path to both Bush and Hobby airports. I haven't seen a plane in weeks. Not even the Life Fight helicopter which I saw constantly but then that means no serious accidents. Sad to see the sky like that. I used to wonder where they were going. Can't wait to see them again. God bless everyone who works in the airline industry. Hopefully it will be back soon. First thing people need to stay home so this will pass faster and not give the virus a chance to spread anymore and die. God Bless America and the rest of the World.

really? I heard the same sh** after 9/11 ...and all that did was slow down air travel because the TSA were profiling the wrong people! LOL!

Life can't return to normal till there's a vaccine. Which could take 12 months or could also take 5 years. Even then, many poorer nations won't have the funds or infrastructure to get everyone vaccinated right away. Air travel is going to be massively affected for years.
@@SuperAdventureR1301 The vaccine could be as worthless as the flu shots. Why? Because virus always change so right now, 3 mutations are already out. With 2/3 million this is just the beginning.

My WWII parents are buried at Bakersfield National Cemetery in Arvin, and my WWII Navy uncle in Victorville. I wanted to drive down to visit their graves (ground's too hard to place flowers & I don't think we're allowed to, can you imagine?!) So seeing those poppies made me think of them and how beautiful the flowers in the Tehachapi mountains probably are now. Thank you, sir. God bless you.
Truly does mark a moment in time that the world stood still, and made us all appreciate how beautiful our world is and the small things we take for granted. I hope well all remember these moments and look back on them to say how we can or have improved and changed our lives for the better.

Everyone of those aircraft represents livelihoods of pilots, crew, cleaners, fuellers, ramp agents, dispatchers, check in crew, travel agents, engineers and lots of others Depressing.

It's strange also not seeing them in the sky. I am in Cornwall UK and all our local airports are closed and we can go a week without even hearing a plane now.
Wow, I've never seen so many jets parked in the same location. In a way, it is sad. Hopefully, they'll be back in the air soon, serving the traveling piublic for business and travel pleasure. Thanks for sharing!
4:27 There's always a one that can't parallel park.
I guess they were moved by trucks instead of on their own - so one has to take into account how to get the truck back out of there - sometimes you have to park the plane weirdly to get the pusher back out - it's not like a video game where you can just drive off over the dirt - the pushback trucks are only made for drive on the flat and smooth runways and taxiways - not on rough dirt around it
You are correct. The planes have to be moved into position with a tug and a tow bar. It would be impossible to get these planes into those positions under their own power.

@@seanviper99 nice comparison - although as long as it's rather "flat" driving over dirt/grass surrounding the run-/taxiways shouldn't be that bad - but the trucks are still not made for it so it should be avoided - I guess parking the planes "weirdly" is the better option than driving accross dirt with the trucks

I am a retired Power Company Technician and I have been in the FAA's Remote Radar Sites on many occasions during my career to assist them in power issue investigations and was always amazed at how many airplanes were always on the radar screens at one time back then. A Lot of flight crews represented in just one blip on the radar screen. Now I'm wondering how many thousands of Crew Members are now sitting at home waiting for a chance to get back to work..
And yea, I married a Southwest Flight Attendant! She gave it up to marry me 23 years ago.

Well with what happened to the latest 737 from Boeing, it kind of makes it hard for them to search for the latest and greatest 737 rather than maintain and reuse their existing planes.

Back in 2020 when this video was uploaded I instantly saved it to my favourites. I have now came back in July 2022 to watch it again. The memories have come flooding back of the time watching this for the first time. An absolutely surreal moment in all of our lives. Parts I hope we never have to go through again but you know what?.......There are parts of that time that I actually miss.

That's an awful lot of capital generating zero revenue.
It brings a tear to your eye whenever you think about the fact that this represents millions of lives at a standstill. I also like the fact that he spoke with pure and genuine awe at the situation.
More like generating negative revenue. They have to maintain the aircraft, and occasionally move it for maintanence purposes. On a large scale, this costs millions for airlines.

Most of the capital belongs to lease companies. Flying or not the asset generates revenue through lease payments, which no doubt remains due even if payment is deferred. Still, the capital quite literally parked around the world is crazy.

I have worked at that airport . One of the best morning sunrises I have ever seen there.
I lived around Palmdale/Lancaster for 30 years. As far as I'm concerned the sunrises and sunsets are unmatched.
It would be relaxing just walk there and watch all those planes

Given what has happened since, I am REALLY glad I got it done when I did... I mean, there were a bunch of widebodies when I did my #AirplaneWheelie two months ago (a lot of B737 MAX, too), but now - parking them on one of the runways - it just nuts!!!

The government bailed out the airlines the owners should of keep paying their employees
