Filming Los Angeles Above 10,000 Feet

  • I fly an airplane above 10,000 feet to film Los Angeles from a new perspective rarely seen before. Because of the airspace restrictions of LAX, it's difficult to fly over many parts of the city, especially at altitudes above a couple thousand feet. So I put some cameras on a small airplane and went above the LAX airspace restriction of 10,000 feet.

Awesome videos and storytelling! Growing up, weekends were when my Dad and I cleaned, fixed, or flew our little Cessna 172 in rural Wisconsin. Dad would always ask me where I wanted to go as we lifted off, and he let me take the controls for most flights. One day I asked if he ever flew up to 10,000ft. I don’t know if he was humoring me, but he said no. So that day we climbed and climbed until the whole world opened up. The forests, lakes, and rivers of my childhood took on a different perspective that I will never forget. I remember watching the temperature gauge on the vent drop and drop, and hearing the engine sound different. Now that he is gone; this is one of my fondest memories of my Dad. The sound of your prop as you flared for landing brings me right back. I must have some dust in my eyes.

Beautiful. One thing is telling that 18 million people live in the city but another very different thing is showing the huge amount of houses. It brings 18 million into perspective. All those people, good people, bad people, people going through bad times, some enjoying good times. The contrast between the complexity of anyone's life and the ordered grid of the city. This is a really good video, good job.

And it cannot be truncated to a single post online. I like to imagine that most pilots are pretty humble people because we see the physical scale of everyone's problems compared to the world around them. And I firmly believe that kicking clouds and tasting the sun at altitude is a sort of spiritual cleansing agent that can only be acquired from other very specific places.

This was such a beautiful video! Seeing the LA metro area from that perspective is incredible. I do this often using Google Earth and MS Flight Sim and it's so amazing seeing it in real video. I've also flown around the area before IRL but not at that altitude and did not have that straight down view with a camera. I've always loved the geography of the whole LA metro area. Especially all the rolling foothills and the mountains. Seeing everything from this altitude, it makes everything down there look so calm. To think that this great number of people are down there, all next to each other trying to do life and exist, it's incredible.
And btw I saw two of my old neighbourhoods in this video 😄😄.
I only have my sport and haven't been up in a while because of a lot of depression nonsense that I've lost the drive for a lot of things but this video is so inspiring.

I have seen many aerial images of LA and surrounding areas. However, I think you may have captured my favorite. Your cross view of the Santa Monica Range is the best I have seen that clearly shows the separation between the San Fernando Valley and the coastal cities. Not only does it reveal the barrier those mountains create, but you an also see the elevation discrepancy between the two areas that are so close together yet separated in so many ways. I paused and studied that image for quite a while. Well done, and Thank You.

I used to flay with my dad in his PzL-104 Wilga back in the 70s. One day we had to flight certify it for altitude so we took off from Chino and flew to around 14,000 feet. I was stunned - I had never seen clean, clear LA air - you could literally see all the smoke belching from the Fontana steel mills and the inversion layer topping out a few thousand feet below us.
That trip ended up being one of my most memorable ever - the Wilga has auto lean for climbing but not auto rich for descending so at around 8,000 feet the engine cut off. Seeing as the starter used compressed air we only had a few shots at restarting, thankfully my dad got it going on the first try.
Later on when we were descending into San Diego for some well earned food at the Red Baron restaurant the tower had problems eyeballing us, it was only when we were about 4 miles out that we realised that we were on final for NAS Miramar !
My best friend flew with me that time - first flight for him also his last !

only been to LA once 20 years ago for a week long visit and there was no place else where I felt a sense of it being forsaken for lack of a better word. I walked through Downtown Manhattan and Queens during the 2003 east coast blackout and yet I have never experienced a feeling like that except being out in isolated deserts of Arizona and New Mexico where the stretches between civilization can be dozens or even hundreds of miles. It is weird because there were loads of people everywhere you went yet despite this it was unarguably the most isolated sense I have ever felt. Maybe it is exactly because of being near to so many people that it felt that way.

It's actually not very busy at 11.5 but you should def have a specific route planned and keep them in the loop. You can get in the way of big jets departing the area.
I will say, I was closely monitoring LA basin visibility for about 2 months, waiting for the right window to shoot this. While it's often sunny on the ground, it looks like crap at altitude above the haze. The basin was reporting 25+ the day I flew. As you probably know, most of the super clear days are accompanied by strong winds and turbulence from the northeast.

This is sick. LA is a city full of things to do! Yet in this video from Malibu to the top of Tujunga and the Rose Bowl, Long Beach it shows how close everything is! 90% of the media and people know famously have at least a connection to LA. Everything that ever was happened here! This video gives me an anxiety yet almost a calm and serene feeling it really highlights how cool LA as a city is.

Very nice video! Enjoyed the content and the commentary. I'm just a few hangar rows away from you - next time I see you I will stop by and say hello. I once took a friend who happened to be a commercial helo pilot for a ride over L.A. in my 182. He kept saying, 'Wow, we're so high up!'. I said, "we're only at 4,000 feet?!" He said he rarely ever climbed higher than 1,500 AGL. He couldn't think of a reason to do so. LOL Guess it's all in your perspective.

It amazes me everything can look so distant but so beautiful. The stadiums below looked almost like craters on the moon or openings to volcanic mountains. The vastness of LA is mind boggling, it looks so packed in. I really liked the 15 mountain lion part. The coastlines looked so inviting.
