      @davidperry2317 most cases where medical grade leeches and/or maggots are used tend to be rare cases. In the case of maggots, their typically used to remove dead tissue in highly sensitive areas, like the top of a foot, where precision is key. And since maggots only eat dead tissue, they leave all the healthy tissues alone. And once the maggots have done their job, they're removed from the wound so that it can be dressed appropriately to start the healing process.
      I find weird facts like this to be very fascinating.

      I would flip my lid if they put maggots on me I’m so sorry. I’m sure it’s helpful but they would literally have to keep me sedated. I can do leeches. Maggots? Absolutely the fawk not 😭!!

    • @AroAceEnbyTaste
      @AroAceEnbyTaste 15 днів тому +6

      @ravenhoec9917 that might be the case. They're mostly used in cases where an infection from human intervention is highly likely to kill a person. For example, a burn victim. If a burn victim were to have complications, maggots might be used to clean tissues that are sensitive or too delicate for a human to clean.

    I’m a nurse and I witnessed leach therapy once! A pt had a seizure and but their tongue causing it to swell so much she had to be on the ventilator. Three days later and her swelling hadn’t improved because she basically had a hemotoma in her tongue. So the dr ordered leaches. One leach can remove about 1 unit of blood and they also have a blood thinner in their saliva that is local only. It was exactly what this person needed. Highlight of my nursing career.

    I am 67 yo female.True story, please bear with me. A friend of mine (like a Brother) was enlisted and stationed in Viet Nam during the war. His tank ran over a huge landmine and he was the only one to survive. Waking up in a hospital he found that he had lost both legs below the knees. Surgery could only do so much.
    Trigger Warning!
    Besides the phantom pains he came to realize that they packed both wounds with maggots and leeches. Bandages changed daily, for weeks. Each did their job, removing dead/dying skin and encouraging fresh blood flow to the wounds.
    It worked well and he recovered to be sent back home. He was fitted with artificial legs (the terminology back then) and lived on to walk down the aisle and have a beautiful family. My Milton, my Hero, my Friend. ❤

    I had a bleeding done to me once. It was an emergency, we were at the forest and it was done by an army medic. My blood pressure was very very high and when they looked I had a kind of bubble of blood that was the size of a golf ball under my armpit. It was clearly starting to get infected and we had very few supplies. She had to pop it and drain the blood. I don't know why or if this was right, but i trusted her and the doctors back in the city told me she did the best she could with what was available and probably saved my life.

    My sister in law used maggots on a diabetic amputation that wouldn't heal. They ordered "sterile" maggots from the body farm. They put the maggots on the stump on Friday and told the patient to comeback Monday. He freaked out and went to the Er at 1 am Sunday morning because the maggots were coming out . The whole ER was freaking out, the patient never told them a doctor had put them on the wound on purpose. I had to go tell them what was going on - maggots only eat dead flesh and were leaving the wound because only live tissue was left. After that patient healed like a charm and didn't have to have his leg removed at the hip.

Bleeding treatment is the old fashioned treatment worldwide, but different method and there're rules how to and not to. Next month I'm going to be an intern in a hospital. Maggots actually are very beneficial in the medical field in specific situations. They have lab grown maggots that are sterile, the thing about maggots is that they only eat rotten dead decaying flesh. So if a patient has a very nasty infected wound with a lot of dead flesh, maggots can be packed in the wound to remove all of the Dead infected flesh, leaving behind fresh new skin and or muscles to start the healing process with a lower rate of reinfection. Very cool stuff but probably feels really weird for the patient 😅

      Maggots are supposed to be great for burns. They eat dying or dead flesh, not healthy.
      Leeches are good for hematoma, clots, scars and more.

It doesn't take long for the maggots to clean off the dead and infected tissue, once you do it you have fresh pink healthy skin underneath. Then you have a chance to keep a leg, arm or whatever has the infection.

    Just saying about the maggot fact. We actually use maggots and modern medicine in very, very specific circumstances. To remove dead skin and dead flesh, it's a way to actually clean. Severed limbs have been lost for extended periods of time, so we could reaattach them. It's actually really cool if you look into the science of it and where we use it.
