I was going to get my car professionally detailed, 3 days, £800. Then I saw several of your videos, so in the past few days I've bought a VonHaus DA polisher, some yellow & black Hex logic pads big & small ones, Autoglym super resin polish, Autoglym Ultra high definition wax, several microfibre cloths large & medium, a clay bar, Bilt Hambers medium and some korrosol spray. I will start my very first proper detail next week when I'm off work! I've got 2 buckets with grit guards, good wash mitts & wheel cleaner brushes also, plus Autoglym snow foam for prewash! I'm sure you'll point out if I've forgotten anything important! Many thanks for your absolutely fantastic and massively helpful videos, much appreciated, Greg 👍🚙😁
I just polished my first complete car. Boy oh boy. It was on my father's recently aquired BMW E46 in a black metallic paint. It has had a very hard life before us, living permanantly under a tree, being a family car, and seems to always have gone through the worst Automated Carwash in The Netherlands. It was almost matt, lots of stains (sunscreen and unknown stuff) and lots of corrosion in the wheel area. I used the Flex rotary from work, with a 5' completely worn out foam pad. At the brink of imploding. My polish of choice was a 10 year old polish of Cartec. For decontamination, I ran it through the cheapest offering the best Automated Carwash in town offers. That should do it. I handled the polisher pretty well, on the lowest setting. Cleaned it 5-6 timed with an air chuck. Given all that: results were what I hoped for! Spent about 2.5-3 hours on it, of which 1.5-2 hours was spent trying to get the baked on dried out polish off. But some gloss made a return, and buffer trails/holograms weren't even that horrible. I guess about 25% of the swirls were gone. The old man was really happy! Yeah that was somewhat fun! Now i'd like to have a DA and decent non-staining polish to try again.
No matter how many vlogs of yours I watch Jon I'm still petrified to put my Das 6 pro to my paintwork. I checked the receipt the other day, I bought it back in 2017 😲
Gave mine a fine polish over the weekend, using carpro reflect such an amazing polish I highly recommend it, my paint has some wash marks and marring and a few love scuffs reflect brought 99% out I was amazed. Megiuars polishing pad on the Makita p5000c 👌🏻
Bought the Koch kit recently, I went through h2 on a few areas required but otherwise full car in f6 and then p3. First time using a da polisher but impressed with the products and outcome for sure

Hi just a quick comment on your video applying autoglem HD ceramic coating. I done my Porsche 987 last week I was very impressed with the product following your advice I love your video's so easy to understand. well done mate keep it up
Great video as always. Just started out using DA after watching and following your channel. I opted for an Autobrite direct machine and am following their colour code system of pads and products. Seems a good approach for the beginner a it’s all numbered up for cut rating gloss rating. Loving their enrich product. Any thoughts on their pads and compounds, don’t think you’ve reviewed their compounds. I know you rate their magi foam. Cheers and keep the videos coming I really enjoy them all! Regarding chasing perfection, yeah it’s hard, but from a safety point of view and not going straight through clear coat I’ve decided to love the odd swirl, that way I know there’s clear coat still there! lol
I tend to choose german OEM abrasive manufacturers like koch, scholl etc over autobrite or chemical guys etc.. thats no disrespect to detailing brands who offer like ranges of decent quality products from one single source.. but in an industry filled with middle men, with abrasives I like to go direct to the source.
wish i'd watched this 1st before doing mine today. Use S20 and a fine finishing pad to just bring up the paint a bit. Happy with the result considering im a complete amateur. thats it done for another year lol
Thanks Jon, really enjoying the channel, just recently start watching and it’s kept me going through lockdown and lightened my wallet!Bought a dual action polisher and about to start using it so perfect timing!
Can’t agree enough with getting your head around “perfecting paint” it will drive you up the wall unless it’s a pretty brand new car or a fresh paint job. There are limitations to expectations when it comes to paint correction and as long as you go at it with that mind frame you will be ok. Also so so so many factors to it as well. 🤯
specially on older cars. generally though Im getting less and less fussy about swirls the old I get. no matter what your wash method and how carefull you are, you will need to clay your car once a year typically, and if you clay you have to polish. so safe wash is perhaps less critical perhaps.
Loved this - such a super useful video if you’re taking the ‘plunge’ into machine polishing. Previous videos on the channel go a bit more in depth I think, great to go back over the basics. FLEX pads and KC abrasives is an ace combo 👍 just important to shake the hell out of the bottle before use !
So John between using a brush to clean out the pad and an air line is there any difference haven’t used a brush I use an air line and will wash out the pad and then spin it on the da to dry it it’s safe to dry it like that because that’s what you do with pad washeds
if you wash it out I dont really see the point in air lining it. I wouldnt wash it out every set though. If you wash your pad every set the chance of spltter and sling goes up and you can think down the products a bit. some dont play with water well. I would just brush it personally.. some guys at home rotate 2 pads. so you could choose to wash that pad when you swap it out. I dont actually know what its like to use air to blow polish from a foam pad as Ive never done it.
You probably get this question alot, But here it goes, i got a 2019 Volvo V90 cross country, Dark Grey metallic, i has what i think is washswirls all over the paint, can only see them in The sen om under flashigt, been told that Volvos paint is hard, What polish do you recomend, i have never used a da polisher before, but i got one incase i get my courage up. Do you think your bad chest could be due to all the fine dust from polishing and small particles of paint lacquer may be you should think about a dust mask and see if you're health improves ?
Cheers for another very informative video Jon. Quick question? How many pads would you recommend for an average sized car. Cutting and finishing please?
I have everything i need polish my car but just keep Putting it off but seeing this has helped! Only problem is I’d have to polish it outside as I don’t have a garage! Would that be a problem doing it outside?
just pick a good day with low wind and not too hot. And go for it. you wont be able to inspect as consistently so be extra carefull for pigtails or machine marring. but you can still do a wicked job
Hello John , for detailing business and work alone for one step polish “medium cut” which machine do you prefer to accomplish work with great finish and more efficient , cordless Long Throw DA or rotary ?
I recently bought all the gear and tried to polish my car for the first time and I definitely made some mistakes. Using a fine claybar with water I managed to inflict loads of crosshatch scratches which I'm not sure I've fully removed, it's very difficult to see what your doing, only under direct sunlight can you notice. I don't have a hose and there might have been some iron fallout dried residue, don't really know where I went wrong.
when you clay your scratch up the paintwork. there are lots of things you can do to minimise this. Important to do chemical decon first for tar and glue and fallout. Important to use fine clay when possible and use lots of clay lube and light pressure. but when you clay you will tear up the clear coat and cover the paint in fine marks and these marks typically need to be machine polished out.
Hi Jon, great video as always. Please can you help - I am in the process of fully detailing my car (with the help of your videos) and just finished the tar/glue removal + fallout removal stage. After rinsing down yesterday I ran out of time so had to put the car away wet and today I obviously have water spotting! The next stage I am going to do is clay bar, is it safe to go ahead and do this or would it be better to remove the water spots first with Koch FSE? Would I then need to do a IPA wipe down or similar before machine polishing? Thank you.
@@forensicunplugged4295 Thank you so much for your reply Jon, your videos have really helped me so much! I've even taken the plunge and bought the DAS-6 Pro and many, many more items that you have reviewed - loving my detailing. Cheers mate - all the best - keep up the great work!
Good Vid as always. How many pads would you recommend to use per vehicle ? And what’s your views on the Koch chemmie pads ? As you tend to use flex. . Thanks
typically if I was doing a cut and polish (1 of each) of this car I would use about 4-6 cutting pads and 4-5 polishing. Have a watch on the unplugged channel of this video for thoughts on the koch pads. Koch and Flex pads are mega high quality only downside is the price point. ua-cam.com/video/n4gDMCWGtx8/v-deo.html
polishing wont remove orange peel. Do not wet sand your car Ricardo. Not unless you research it very extensivly. And not untill you have machine polished a fair few cars first. buy a test hood to practise on.. but generally just dont wet sand OEM clear to remove peel. some bodyshops do it on non OEM refinishing work because peel levels dont match or they put in back textured work etc..
I was wondering what do you prefer the flex forced rotation cordless or the normal non forced rotation cordless polisher? Im in the market for a new one and what puts me off the non forced flex cordless polisher is will the pad stall on uneven surfaces. Ive had the rupes bigfoot LHR15ES and currently have only the rupes LHR75E.
the XFE cordless will stall if you pressure down into the paintwork.. the XCE cordless does not have this problem. For me the cordless is perfect. If I was in the trade though I think corded would be the way to go.
Hi Jon, Will you be doing koch chemie sil review on either of your channels as sound like bargain product plus in current times(COVID-19) getting isopropyl to make ipa mixture is almost impossible nowadays-for obvious reasons and if you lucky to get it than cost per 1ltr is same what I paid for 5ltr before. Or maybe you will consider doing panel wipe test/comparison? Also would you mixing it with distilled water or tap?
The real problem now for the people who are just starting a path in polishing their cars - DAS6 pro has been sold from everywhere, I was looking it up and trying to find in about a dozen of online retailers - non have it. And the ones that still have put a ridiculous price on it 😂
What advice would you give for using a rotary for the first time ? Just got a mini rotary spot polisher. Used a DA a good few times but bit unsure about using a rotary. Higher speeds for small 40mm pads ?
if your using tiny spot pads with a rotary just work small sections at a time. use tiny amount of product. run at higher rotation speeds than normal for sure. also take the weight of the polisher up more or the pads will just flatten under the machine weight.
Hi John after watching one of your videos on pads you mentioned about a place you got some off eBay from zfe stores I went and bought about 60 different ones orange white red blue and black I’m going use theses for the first time tomorrow with some Autoglim rapid renovator could you please advise me what colour should I start with I have an 08 Range Rover in Alaska white which is like a very pale white many thanks Ian .
no it can be done sure no problems. sunlight on the panels can be a problem. You also cant inspect reliably.. sometimes you might get the sun shining in the right spot and have amazing light to see swirls but you can move the sun when you change to a different panel.. so its harder to do a higher standard of paint correction outside because inspecting is important for that... but you can still employ good technique outside and get very good results.. set piece rule.
How many pads per stage would you need to do the whole car do you think? Trying to build up my kit and knowledge before taking the plunge on my Type R.
I've got a 2 year old car with just over 9k miles. The previous owner has left some scratches by where you open the doors, boot and bonnet (idiot). The rest of the car is in excellent condition but if I'm removing the other scratches I'm thinking I may as well machine polish the whole car. Would you recommend that I only use the finest polish seeing as the paint work is pretty much brand new and just go over the car once?
the sort of scratches you get near the handle can be too deep to remove. so you might want to compound or even wet sand those. and then just do a light polish on the car.
Iv looked cant find anywhere where it says you can dilute sil? Does it say on the bottle you can dilute it? Also sonax excut 05-05 is a good single stage on hard paint I got between 80-100% correction with it on Audi paint
says on the front of the bottle Hak. But also if you look at Slims detailing "how to guides" for the product it says it there. I think it also says it on certain abrasives like P3 (not 100% sure on that though)
hey tim I would recomend a quick 5 minute wash.. just in case any debry falls on the car. even a blanket of foam and rinse it off. be extra carefull drying the areas you have buffed. obviously the conditions, time of year etc play a key factor.. pollen etc.. sleet or snow in winter etc.
Are you able to clarify the density of clear coat? I hear it's about as thick as a piece of A4 paper, so I don't understand how people are able to do multiple polishes spread out of years, let alone multiple passes (3 stages etc)
about 50 microns of clearcoat is a good like amount.. can be a lot lower and a lot higher.. a micron is a thousandth of a millimeter. the reason you can do so many passes is purly down to the abrasive particles being so small.
great informative video for the beginner jon well done. i was just looking at the koch panel wipe prodct before i watched your video. are you going to be doing a review on this at all mate? im currently using eraser and was wondering how this stuff compares. keep up the good work .
@@hakman239 you wont be able to see the difference with your eyes hakim.. but H9 will cut more, F6 will cut less add a bit of gloss. so you could pick H9 if you wanted to work more cut and you knew for sure you only had one set. Lots of pro's tell me they single stage with H9 (or H8) or S3 gold.
Forensic Unplugged would h9 leave a haze tho I used h9 on wool pad on my golf to remove a scratch could feel with my nail it removed it with pressure on da and 8 passes finished down very well checked with a light couldn’t see a haze but it was late at night
Really useful video thanks Jon 👍 I've got a DAS6 and the Koch Chemie abrasive range sat ready to go. My dad's said I can try it on his Golf that's never been machine polished and is very heavily scratched. Would I just use the Heavy Cut and then go onto the Micro Cut? Is there any point in doing a set with the F6 fine cut? Thanks!!! (Not expecting perfection but I'd still like to try and improve the paint 🙂)
First check paint code,if it has cr in front it is ceramic clear also known as uhs clear its hard as rock. You can start with wool pad and with h9,and make sure that you brake abrassives all the way (like doing 4 5 passes) If it is normal clear you can start with normal pad. If you brake down h9 all the way you can finish with M3 with no problem, beacuse h9 finishes quite good for cutting compound.
Jon, I don't know if anyone else here thinks this but, get yourself some ear defenders mate and wear them please. Sound damage to hearing is cumulative!
Respectfully you have to apply some perspective, im doing a one polishing set demo with a machine that is kicking out around 60 DB for 2 minutes. My lawnmower kicks out about 90db and I run that for 30 minutes with no ear defenders. We have talked about noise protection on the channel but you cant cover every single relevent thing or the video will be hours long. its clearly an unscripted demo. Someone else could raise that the oxide in these polishes is something you dont want to breath in so dont just wear a particle filter mask, wear a half mask with filters. Some detailers will also tell you glove up when polishing and goggle up as well because the dust and solvents get into your eyes. This flex brushless DA though is really smooth Im not sure I would wear defenders with it even if polishing a full car, although I typically use wireless noise reduction headphones to zone out and listen to music. From engaging with millions of people now I can say, virtually no one at home will wear filter masks and very very few will wear ear defenders. If your doing this every day then you should of course think carefully about PPE or it will bite you back. But you also have too apply commen sense as well, I cant wear ear defenders when filming and shooting dialogue live like this.
Just sent this to my son-in-law. He is becoming a real detail enthusiast. Great place for him to start. Well done again Jon.

Any opinions on Moore car care jon? Got some on county detailing cheap for my 3 inch machine and I’m yet to try them.
Hi Jon,
Will you be doing koch chemie sil review on either of your channels as sound like bargain product plus in current times(COVID-19) getting isopropyl to make ipa mixture is almost impossible nowadays-for obvious reasons and if you lucky to get it than cost per 1ltr is same what I paid for 5ltr before. Or maybe you will consider doing panel wipe test/comparison?
Also would you mixing it with distilled water or tap?
I can do video on SIL yes. best to think of SIL as basically pure IPA.
What if you wanted to do one step on hard clear f6 medium cut with flex purple to get more gut but more gloss then h9
The real problem now for the people who are just starting a path in polishing their cars - DAS6 pro has been sold from everywhere, I was looking it up and trying to find in about a dozen of online retailers - non have it. And the ones that still have put a ridiculous price on it 😂
Could you do a video on h8 with flex purple the gloss Iv seen people use it is good enough for one step on hard laint
Forensic Unplugged Great - cheers for the advice 👌
I've seen lot of detailers applying Meguiar's yellow carnauba wax on top of a 3M cream wax. Is that effective enough wax on a top of wax?
doesnt make too much difference really.
Hi John after watching one of your videos on pads you mentioned about a place you got some off eBay from zfe stores I went and bought about 60 different ones orange white red blue and black I’m going use theses for the first time tomorrow with some Autoglim rapid renovator could you please advise me what colour should I start with I have an 08 Range Rover in Alaska white which is like a very pale white many thanks Ian .
use the stiffest of the ZFE pads.. I think thats the yellow color code?? You might find these pads are too soft for rapid renovator.
@@forensicunplugged4295 should I go out and buy some different ones which are more suitable
Hi I've got a 2009 tigra really bad paint lots of swirls, is this classed as hard or soft paint?
its more likely to be soft to medium but not 100% sure.
Great video.. Jon is machine polishing outside a no no?
no it can be done sure no problems. sunlight on the panels can be a problem.
Forensic Unplugged thanks Jon, appreciate the feedback 👍🏻
How many pads per stage would you need to do the whole car do you think? Trying to build up my kit and knowledge before taking the plunge on my Type R.
so for 1 set of cutting and 1 set of polishing I would suggest 4-6 of each really.
Forensic Unplugged 5 pads to cut and 5 to polish. Best get the piggy bank out. Cheers mate!
@@MrRugbyplayer8 can do it with 1 but you have to clean it out properly periodically. Cleaning it with the hose will also cool it down.
NicE informative video.
@@forensicunplugged4295 Ah OK, that makes sense. Thank you very much!
Anyone finding it near on impossible to get your hands on bilt hamber or other good quality detailing products?!
detailing is the perfect thing during isolation, all the stuffs out of stock XD
Iv looked cant find anywhere where it says you can dilute sil? Does it say on the bottle you can dilute it? Also sonax excut 05-05 is a good single stage on hard paint I got between 80-100% correction with it on Audi paint
says on the front of the bottle Hak. But also if you look at Slims detailing "how to guides" for the product it says it there. I think it also says it on certain abrasives like P3 (not 100% sure on that though)
Polishing never ends...Especially on black paint...Believe me i know :)
Do a test and review of aenso products
Great video Jon 👍 you're pinching my vid ideas lol
Thanks Jon 👍
How many pad you are using for a full car ?
So if i wash the car on day one a polish the next but I don’t have a garage so the car would be left out overnight would that be ok
hey tim I would recomend a quick 5 minute wash.. just in case any debry falls on the car. even a blanket of foam and rinse it off. be extra carefull drying the areas you have buffed. obviously the conditions, time of year etc play a key factor.. pollen etc.. sleet or snow in winter etc.
@@forensicunplugged4295 it would be spring so do the day one wash stage put before starting day 2 polish stage give it a snow foam and blower dry
Does anyone know where to purchase a das6 pro for a decent price ? In2detailing seem to be out of stock
Great Video again Jon must start using my Carbon Collective Kit to polish my Car
Hi, what RPM do you suggest as guide to polish at as my poor boys DA polisher goes up to about 6000rpm which is too much?
crank it down a bit to like 4000-4500 and only crank up if your stalling out too easily when flat.
Forensic Unplugged thank you very much 👍🏻😊
Are you able to clarify the density of clear coat? I hear it's about as thick as a piece of A4 paper, so I don't understand how people are able to do multiple polishes spread out of years, let alone multiple passes (3 stages etc)
about 50 microns of clearcoat is a good like amount.. can be a lot lower and a lot higher.. a micron is a thousandth of a millimeter. the reason you can do so many passes is purly down to the abrasive particles being so small.
@@ForensicDetailing ah i see, thanks for clarifying for me, loving the content as always!
great informative video for the beginner jon well done. i was just looking at the koch panel wipe prodct before i watched your video. are you going to be doing a review on this at all mate? im currently using eraser and was wondering how this stuff compares. keep up the good work .
Yeah you pay a polish guy to do it. Job done
Don't you prime the the pad?
So one step on hard paint f6 flex purple?
yes
Forensic Unplugged is like to see a vid of you doing that on the bmw vs one step with h9 with same pad
@@hakman239 might be the wool hakman thats contributing.. but yes I dont like to single stage with H9 either.. but people do.
You can start with wool pad and with h9,and make sure that you brake abrassives all the way (like doing 4 5 passes)
If it is normal clear you can start with normal pad.
If you brake down h9 all the way you can finish with M3 with no problem, beacuse h9 finishes quite good for cutting compound.
@@DinoGrahovic Thanks! Didn't know about that. I've just looked at the paint code for my Polo and that just says LC9X Which is the Deep Black Pearl
When you say panel wipe 4 to 1 are you talking 4 part product 1 part water or 4 part water and 1 part product? Cheers
1 part product 4 parts water
yes thats for the SIL product only though. what hakman said 1p product to 4p water
Cheers for the response guys 👍
What is IPA
Should have put this on the main channel
theres about 3-4 already on there. I thought I would do like a live one for the unplugged channel.
❤️
Try saying “Polish it behind
the door” quickly 🤪😂
Jon fair points, thanks for the reply.
That’s better 3 passes instead of overworking lol
£5 a liter John... that can is 5 liter!!
yer but that can should be diluted down 1:4 so you get 25 litres for 25 quid. = fiver a liter.
