Deltic 55009 Alycidon Returns to Railtour Duties!

- In this video, we capture the return of Class 55 Deltic 55009 Alycidon return to mainline railtour duties on The Capital Deltic Reprise Saturday 29th July 2023.
The tour would see the Deltic make a very extensive trip from Willington to London Kings Cross via Sheffield, Doncaster, Gascoigne Wood, Doncaster (again) & Cambridge.
The return legs of the tour heading from London Kings Cross to Cleethorpes via Lincoln Central and then from Cleethorpes to Willington via Ucleby where the 47 would take the tour from Cleethorpes to Ucleby to turn so the Deltic could lead once again.
We first see the Deltic Friday 28th July at Clay Cross light engine powering towards Derby on the MML as she heads from Barrow Hill LIP to Burton Ot Wetmore Sidings in preparation for the tour.
Saturday 29th July we first see 55009 at Unstone & Dronfield climbing the steep 1 in 102 gradient sounding fantastic as she roars her way towards Sheffield after picking up passengers at Chesterfield. However, due to an incorrect stock formation, the tour left Burton on the ECS to Willington 41 mins late, reaching us 53 mins late.
We then made a trip into Lincolnshire to capture Alycidon at speed on her home territory, the ECML. Here she is seen at Frinkley Lane Foot Crossing, just north of Grantham where she speeds southbound 40 mins late, unfortunately with assistance from the Class 47 '47826' on the rear.
We fast forward to the evening where we capture 55009 at Chesterfield 28 mins late, making a passenger drop-off on the return leg of the tour where she departs on one engine with assists from the 47.
We finally capture her in the night at Hasland 27 mins late as she powers away from Chesterfield with the 47 doing equal amount of work as the Deltic to end off the day.
It was originally planned that the Deltic would return to Barrow Hill Sunday 30th July (the date of uploading this video) but due to her now heading to Loughborough Brush (not sure the reasoning of this as of writing this) Monday 31st July it has been decided to upload the videos of the two days only.
Overall it's been great to see the return of 55009 Alycidon on railtour duties for the first time since 2019, even with the 47 assistance and we hope to capture her on tours again in the future.

A sight to behold especially at Chesterfield, I remember that sound so well when I used to see the Deltics at York as a youngster. Thank you!
You're very welcome, glad you enjoyed it :)

Many thanks for posting yet another breathtaking presentation - especially the night parts. As a committed Steam Engine fan I have usually disregarded Diesel Locomotives, sorry to the enthusiasts, that is until I have watched such videos as this. The Deltic in particular is a stunning example of British ingenuity and engineering innovation.
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it! :) Deltics are fantastic and truly special locos, especially when you hear one in person you really feel the power of them :)

A Deltic is only a Deltic when both engines are running.
Hello from Chile.
I have a question.
I see others British diesel class locomotives in pics. But, I don't know iff are other classes of sub-classes of this.
The 37, 40, 44, 45, 46 are sub-classes of this locomotives or not?
The 37, 40, 44, 45 & 46 are all different classes to the 55, even if they do look similar :)

Pity 009 had fuel issue on one engine great shots
Thank you very much David, certainly is a shame she had issues. Hopefully she can have a trouble free run on her next tour :)

@@RailView_YT Is that the reason for the smoke? It can't be right.
@@chrisst8922 Deltics usually clag quite a lot, can’t say I’m 100% sure on what caused the fuel issue

good thing is mosquito control!!
For her to be fresh out of the paint shop and looking great , it seems almost criminal that she's only running one engine 😢
I think it running one of the engines on the Deltic is not 100 per cent hence one engine is running and 47 doing most of the work
Albert Einstein right here

Any idea what the engine problem was? She looks great , fresh out of the works , but only one engine....seems sad 😭😭
A regulator problem was discovered just after leaving Kings X on the return leg so the engine was shut down at New Southgate as a precaution.
Is the class 47 also propelling the train ?
Thanks.
I'd technically say yes leaving Chesterfield, the 47 was basically just getting her up to speed while she had issues with one of her engines.

Sounds a bit rough with only one engine running properly.

That's a pretty hideous ragbag of four different liveries on that rake of coaches. One would hope for a better looking train than that. Good to see a Deltic on the main line though - still impressive.
