WOW that must be the greatest deltic footage I have seen in working on a deltic seen at the moment and this video is quite simply the encyclopedia I need to finish the magic I’m creating I’ll get a video up by the end of the year. Keep up the great work.
so how you tell the difference between a Deltic & the other classes that use the same body style? As far as i am aware there were 3 classes that used the deltic body style The class 37s The Baby Deltic & The Deltic itself I assume the Class 37s & Baby Deltics are smaller & shorter in length as they are only single engine machines & the real Deltics are Bigger & much longer in length to accomadate the second engine?
It's also the track turnouts switches It's fascinating how trains can cross several tracks weave in an out cross over in any direction signals lights switches It's fascinating and a wonderful system all invented hear in the UK!..
Would be great to see a new build Deltic on the cards, as there is plenty of new build steam loco’s on the go at present,or even get the prototype running again. We can all live in hope.
Exactly! To perform properly they require both power units running. But in private heritage preservation they have to be frugal with very relatively few spare parts as replacements.
The oil consumption on those Deltics must have been horrendous when they had a lot of hours on them,I’ll bet their fuel consumption wasn’t that brilliant either. To many moving parts in them but very powerful.
Such beautiful scenes, sometimes you mean to stand in a model railway layout! What a pity, that no Deltic is shown at the international collection in Augsburg, Germany as a worthy representative of all railway´s motherland !
I was in Birmingham on Saturday 6/2/21 and was passing bescot tmd I seen 2 locomotives a class 08 shunted and a class 89001 20 year ago there would have been 50 locomotives on there maybe more! And the deltics big daddy loco I love that unusual sound of There 5000hp engines British rail should have kept these loco's for freight as they was perfectly capable of very heavy loads!
Dandyes1997LoveAnimeGirl And Queen Elsa the HSTs we're introduced. Deltics weren't used as freight locos, and were envisaged as high speed passenger locos.
Bear in mind this is an assumption, Deltics were superseded for passenger duties by the intercity 125, which is 25 mph faster than the deltic. And I don’t think they were used for freight because of the 2 engines that usually needed replacing rather than repair, so the class 37, 47 and later 56 were likely a more attractive proposal.
@@Meddled the gearing was wrong for freight, thats also why they start out of stations so slowly. I remember them creeping out of Kings X into gasworks spewing exhaust, nice noise though!
May I respectfully suggest you have a hearing test? Any Merlin that sounded like that would need major work! 😉 They are both fabulous and unique sounding engines but to be honest, if you wanted to compare, try a Griffon, it's got a similar gruff power sound.
What a treat to watch two great videos of wonderful English Electric machines in one morning. Good job I forgot that I had gardening to do!
I love the sound of the Deltic's. I used to live near the station at Peterborough and I could hear these pulling out of the station at full bore.
Great shots on non electrified lines , beautiful locos with such a distinctive sound , we are so lucky to have so many saved from the scrap man .
Lovely video ,the best diesel train in the world 🌎

Had forgotten how much they liked to smoke!! But what a great sound so unique on UK rails. Thanks for posting.
Magnificent,Majestic,Glorious and Epic!
Cracking Deltic footage Kevo, never get tired of that drone sound!👍
Early on I thought the 37 class was a Deltic. The Deltic is actually the diesel motor not the body style. Outstanding video SK.

Nice to see heritage traction pulling a big rake without a 57 stuck on the end for hotel power or as a get out of jail card!
Never understood the “hotel power” thing as Deltics had ETH.
mY grandfather used be a BR driver on class 55s and 47s on east coast main line ,Brought me hat home BR one johnrey ortizs model railway
"How many cylinders shall we give it?"
_"Yes"_
8:20 thats a bit special with the HST Prototype! (what a debacle that all was sadly)

I am going to board on one, 'The Deltic Deviation' in early May, Finsbury Park (London) to Newcastle and return.
I thought you said "devastation"
Love the Deltics & that sound!
Deltic dreamland… wonderful video.
Brilliant content 👍👍👍👍👍

The two stroke diesel engines would not meet emission standards
but neither would a steam train
Too many people anti everything these days. Extremely sad to see.
Why reproduce something that already exists? The LMS and Southern twins are between them the true pioneers of British diesel electric power.
@@johnpirie4804 who cares when you can flail and stick your head out to hear that unique soundtrack and a smell that’s unique too.
Thanks from Finland! *
Some of those people who were at the stations maybe didn't know how lucky they were!
Nice video of Deltics in action. The Daddy of all diesels. 👌
Most of them running on one engine sounding like a bag of spanners on heritage lines. Not what they were designed for.
Exactly!

That’s magnificent I love the deltic

GPM, not MPG ;-)

This is the solution to social distancing problems .. Replace All Sprinters with Loco hauled trains !!! Simple.

Why do they pump out so much smoke? Are they burning oil with the fuel like a 2 stroke bike?
They are 2-stroke Napier marine diesels. Not designed for the intermittent use as on locos.
13 coaches, no messing around there!
The coaches hauled by the deltics date from the steam age Is this so?
Very cool.
Why do the staff feel the need to wear Bright Orange clothes in the cab ? Ruins the photos as the old drivers never did
I believe it's a h&s thing for when they have to descend to the trackbed (so they don't forget to put it on).
@@royfearn4345 yep, rail colours Roy, spot on. Yes they wear them in the cab for exactly that reason. Trackside without one is classed as a near miss
Why class 55 stop running on mainline?
