Deltics 24/7: from dawn till dusk with 55022.

- "Deltics 24/7" is my film of a special day, 24th of July 2010, from lineside. Special because, with Deltic 55022 Royal Scots Grey hauling a GBRF staff excursion from Newcastle-Scarborough that was private, I was again able to experience a day linesiding with the guarantee of multiple Deltic 'sightings' - and all in the year 2010! Talk about cheating time! I make no apologies for including in my edit the approach and aftermath of certain 'passes'. The often drawn-out sound of a Deltic approach and its long, lingering note after passing epitomises the magical hold these locos had on people and made each sighting of a Deltic racing along the east Coast Main Line, both an event and an experience. May the Deltic drone live on.
The trip ran via Doncaster in each direction. The loco also handled the Doncaster-Newcastle ECS movements before and after the tour proper and these are both shown. The shots in order are: northbound ECS at dawn at Fenwick; Newcastle-Scarbro leg northbound at Great Heck; Scarbro-Newc leg southbound at Gateforth and later, northbound at Ryther; finally, the southbound (Newc-Donc) ECS at Fenwick at dusk.
Shame about the highly cancerous fumes but oh, what a fabulous sound.....and it seems the birds agree too as they are chirping away. So many memories evoked, so many journeys recalled.
I love the smell of Napier’s in the morning
As an Irish rail fan, i have to say that's an incredible locomotive with an amazing sound. Love that drone sound especially when it's coming from in the distance and the way it gradually fades out when it passes by. Fantastic stuff
"How it used to be". Spot on, and this from somebody who has yet to see/hear one of these beasts in the flesh. Great atmosphere throughout, birdsong giving way to the howl of the beast and returning as the parting drone fades away. Lovely!
That final shot could really take you back the the early 1980s with a speeding Deltic bearing down on you with a set of MkII's in tow. A spectacular collection pal! Keep up the good work! :D
I really believe that with today's tech, this design will return but smaller with more power.
If these images (and sounds!) bring back good memories then they're worth the effort. Many thanks for the comment.
Absolutely mesmerising video, just screams pure nostalgia and the way it has been put together is brilliant...Spellbinding from a 70's youngster😉
May the Deltic live forever.
Thank you for posting. Deltics have such an amazing sound at speed. I'd love to see one visit the US, especially on the Northeast Corridor.
Beautifully captured, but that first shot in particular is something else. A quiet, peaceful morning interrupted by the thunderous Deltic with all its power and majesty, the sound as it and the coaches race past only for it to return to tranquility moments later...Fabulous. Top bombing sir.
I had 22 a few years ago and clocked at 108mph on load 12, you could feel the speed and appreciate the power even after all these years, the carriages were silent with everyone mesmerised at the the world flying by outside. Awesome experience.
Lovely footage, and that Deltic drone is awesome! well done👍
I've lost count of the times i've watched this video at full volume over the years. Pure dead brilliant!!!
Nothing beats the sight and sound of a Deltic at speed.Takes me back to the good old days at Grantham in the mid 60's.Great upload, many thanks.
I've lost count of the number of times I've watched this. Just bloody brilliant!
You can't mistake that sound creeping up in the distance.... great shots.
what a wonderful footage this is... awesome!!!...greetings from india...very nice work done..
That’s fabulous mate Fenwick always has a best vantage point especially at the level crossing section
Wow, made my eye's a lil watery, your captions and filming were utterly utterly superb ...... highly emotional and atmospheric .... Thank you for sharing ;-) ;-)
