Pay is dependent on where you’re at. In New York/SF, compared to London, it’s a couple margins higher. I’ve heard a lot of first year analysts are getting past 150k due to all the m&a activity. Some are even getting really close to 200k like the centerview dudes.

A lot of people don’t understand that when you get into investment banking I would say about 80% of people only do it for 2-3years max and then leave. The main perks of investment banking is the career opportunities it provides. For example you grind for 2 years at Goldman Sachs fresh out of uni leave and then you have top hedge knocking at your door with even better pay, a much higher ceiling and a far better work life balance. If you leave from a top investment bank you can pretty much go anywhere in the field of finance and be set for life with great work life balance it’s only those initial two years that suck. And even if you decide to stick around in investment banking the hours get far better and the pay multiplies tremendously. You can easily retire by your 40s

I think the key to remember is that the work load of an analyst isn't forever. If you stick around to make associate, and beyond, the hours are much more flexible.
Or if you transition into PE, the hours also get better.
It's a great career path to guarantee you'll retire comfortably, but the work life balance is absolutely atrocious.
And it's not the work where you're "working for 16 hours straight" but more that you have to be available at all hours just in case some MD randomly sends you their review notes of your latest deck.
Anyway, long rant. IB isn't for everyone

i really don’t get why everybody is hyping investment banking so much. look at this guys eyes in the evening. to me this is just sad. you’re throwing away your free time (time you could e.g. use to read books and to really expand your horizon) and your health, at least on the physical side. and on top of that, salaries are not so great in relation to the high amount of working hours. don’t get me wrong - if you love it so much that you think it’s worth it: great, go for it. but never would i ever throw away sleep, health etc.

IB analyst is mosly used as sort of a trampoline for the rest of your career. usually straight out of college you get ~60k-80k in salary and 40k-60k in bonuses, but most IBAs only do that job for a couple years before moving into private equity or hedge funds, where work is less and the pay can get crazy high. they kinda sacrifice two years of their life so that when they are 30-50 they can make 500k or more for much less work

Well made and pretty insightful. I have a couple of friends from uni who went the IB route and both have now bailed after having breakdowns. I can understand entirely how that would happen.
I think I had a lucky escape ending up following a data engineering path instead. Sometimes the hours are long (key projects, big migrations etc...) but I typically get away with a 10 - 6 standard working day with a fair amount of flexibility.
Granted, the remuneration isn't at the same level, but it's still far more than enough , and I actually have some free time for socialising, gaming and hobbies/side-projects.

Yeah, generally speaking when I went through it, you get less and less healthy. Fat people get fatter, skinny people get skinnier. If you don't have a relationship, you're unlikely to get one, and If you're in one your S.O. will hate your guts cause you don't spend anytime with them. But still glad I did it....society does give you a lot of leeway as an I-banker though, rightfully or wrongfully. My ex-gf was pretty understanding, and I went to the hospital once for stomach acid build up. I promised myself if I ever ended up in the hospital again, I would quit. (Crazy...now thinking of it...I rationalized that the 2nd trip to hospital would justify leaving a job, not the first. Also...side note...my colleagues still ribbed me for taking 1 day off afterwards. Even though I considered my office to be on the nicer and more family oriented side. Still very big dick attitude among everyone.) Thanks for reading, whomever is still there. Guess I needed some journal therapy...haha.
