    My first delidding experience comes shortly after my i9-7980XE began overheating to 104°C. Using a tube of liquid metal and der8auer's delid tool (sent to me by Steve from GamersNexus), I embark on a quest for sustainable operating temperatures and a life without thermal throttling.

    Congratulation on your first delid Kyle! The process was simple enough with the cool tool:)) One little piece of advice, it helps so much to apply liquid metal to the IHS and also put a very good silicone if not industrial silicone. As you probably know the liquid metal is the most efficient when it gets very hot so these 2 things help the process. Love your content! Keep up the good work!

    I had no problems with my i7 4790k for the first couple of years I had it, then all of a sudden it just started hitting 100 degrees and throttling. I couldn't figure out what the issue was, so ended up removing the 4.4ghz boost capabilities and the temps never went over 80 degrees after that. But obviously that wasn't good enough, why have a processor that can't use its own boost? Such a waste. I obviously ruled out the Corsair AIO cooler as the issue. That was working fine.
    So I decided to de-lid for the first time ever and I have to say WOW!! Liquid metal (The same one that Kyle uses in the video) made an incredible difference. My CPU is now back to being able to boost as it should and my temperatures never go over 45 degrees while gaming and whilst running AIDA64, the max temp it hits is 55c.
    So if anyone is having the same kind of problems, I'd say you should contemplate doing the same. After all, if a noob like me can do it... anyone can. ;)
    Quick edit... I forgot to say that when I removed the IHS of the CPU, the Intel thermal paste had dried out and literally crumbled away. This CPU had been running at stock settings since the day I bought it, no overclocking has ever been performed on it. So that says a lot about the thermal paste that Intel uses. Lol.

    • @AnonIllumi
      @AnonIllumi 5 років тому

      daft question new to de-lidding is thermal paste on the CPU to the IHS and do you reckon this can be done with AMD CPU's in the same way? (only seen it on intel so far)

    • @stageselectca
      @stageselectca 5 років тому +1

      hmmm I have a 4790k that runs pretty hot... not sure I can justify the cost of a delid tool + liquid metal... but tempting :S

    • @Ironside32
      @Ironside32 5 років тому

      Between the CPU chip and the IHS, there is thermal paste, but it's Intels' own and that's not very good. To be honest, I've never seen de-lidding done with an AMD processor either, perhaps UA-cam may have some videos on it, if it is at all possible.
      Sorry I can't be of any real help there. I don't want to give any false information out.

    • @Ironside32
      @Ironside32 5 років тому +3

      My problem was so bad that I almost bought a new 8700k to replace it. But that would have meant buying a new Motherboard and DDR4 RAM too, so that combined cost convinced me that taking the chance of doing a de-lid was worth it, after all, if it failed I'd still have to change it all out anyway.
      I don't know where you're located, but I'm in the UK. I used the "Overclockers" website to purchase my Der8auer de-lid kit for £25 (the day after I bought mine, they had used ones for sale at £15, which I would have bought if available at the time.) and the Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut for £7. Plus some thermal resistant silicon sealant from Amazon UK for £5 (to re-lid the CPU, which as Kyle says, isn't strictly necessary, again I wish I'd known that. Lol). So the total cost was only £37, but without the sealant & buying the used de-lid kit, it would have only been £22. But I'm still VERY happy that I only had to pay £37 to fix my issue and breathe new life into my system. It's a LOT better than £700+ for all new gear.
      One thing I will say is... If you do decide to do it, make sure you don't get any liquid metal on anything but the CPU chip, to be sure, I used my wifes' clear nail polish to paint on the little metal contacts under the IHS before applying the liquid metal, just to be sure. There are some great instructional videos here on UA-cam that'll tell you all you need to know. And as I said before, I've never done anything like this before, for fear of wrecking stuff. But this gamble paid off in spades! My temps are so low now that I have more than enough headroom for if I ever want to overclock.

    • @stageselectca
      @stageselectca 5 років тому

      i'm in Canada, I can get the der8auer tool for about $54 on amazon but looks like there's some cheaper $24 versions which should work fine too... and about $20 for conductonaut.. so about $45 total. not awful I guess.. might consider it ;)

    Forgot to clean the glue from the chip pcb and IHS, didn't spread the liquid metal on the IHS and didn't even put protective coating such as clear nail polish around the die. Which we all can probably assume Wifesauce has. Smooth one, Kyle.

      Intel doesn't use liquid metal to cool the CPUs because liquid metal is not as durable as the thermal compound they use. Liquid metal needs to be replaced "frequently" as opposed to the thermal compound thats last for years. There aren't many people willing to use LM because of the risk and the hastle, despite the great improvement.

    • @minimonkeyplay
      @minimonkeyplay 5 років тому +4

      Liquid metal needs to be replaced maybe every 3 years. It's not that frequent. You should pay attention to how well you apply it the first time more than worry about it aging.
