    so basically you pay from hundreds to thousands of dollars to get low quality paste on the cpu which you should swap yourself and void warranty? and nobody makes an issue out of it?

      It's not the stock thermal paste that is low quality, but the gap between the die and IHS created by the thick layer of adhesive silicone. I'm really disappointed that Linus didn't cover this at all, in fact they skipped over removing the adhesive.

      I think they want the chips to have air above them so if AMD actually brings out better CPUs, they will just change the thermal paste.

    • @MrBlewvane

      Changing the thermal paste isn't what brings the temperature down.

      Mr Blewvane So? What brings it down than?

    • @MrBlewvane
      @MrBlewvane 6 років тому +7

      The high temperatures are caused by improper contact between the IHS and the die. The improper contact is caused when the adhesive used to bond the IHS to the substrate dries and cures, because it apparently expands and slightly lifts the IHS.
      Removing the thick ring of adhesive from the substrate allows the IHS to make proper contact with the die, which allows the IHS to transfer heat more efficiently.

    • @KemoKa77
      @KemoKa77 6 років тому +4

      The answer being: because Intel decided that their customers don't deserve a proper interface between the die and the IHS on their $2000 CPUs. So they skimped and used cheap, crappy thermal paste to save a few bucks.
      775, 1156, 1155 (except for Ivy Bridge) and 2011 users never had to worry about this because Intel used SOLDER for those. How times have changed, eh?
      AMD on the other hand did the right thing and used solder for all of their processors, from Ryzen 3 to Threadripper. Like they should.

    Delidding a brand new CPU is risky. A good option is to consider delidding your CPU when you hesitate to change it.
    Instead of buying a new one, just try to delid the old one, first. If you succeed, you will be good to enjoy and overclock your old CPU for one more year. If you fail, just buy a new one. (You were hesitating, anyway)
    Delidding is a good option for giving a chance to your old CPU to get a second life. Even if it's just for 6 monthes, it is worth the price of a delid tool and thermal paste.

      I just bought a delidded 4790K. Can one relid it manually? I propose to use very little silicone and to install the CPU in the socket before the sealant is fully dry. Any adjustment of IHS position will take place as the socket frame is lowered and locked. Then the pressure from the socket frame and the cooler bring the die, IHS and cooler, with respective TIMs, into better contact. Comments?

    I don't understand one fucking bit, why after spending 1000 bucks on a fucking processor, it's necessary to have to de-lid it and apply better thermal compound to to it. Shame on the manufacturer for putting such a jem at risk of overheating just to save a few cents during the manufacturing process on an already overpriced chip. I mean wouldn't they save more money in the long run by just applying better thermal compound instead of having to replace warranty covered chips that fried? It would also make your customers happier too all over just a few cents per processor. I don't know maybe they're counting on slippage from people not claiming warranties.

    • @alexborr1746
      @alexborr1746 6 років тому +32

      maybe they want to force you to buy new hardware after 3-5 years and stop you from selling your old chip on second hand market, increasing in both cases their sales...
      On the other hands they could just apply good thermal glue and sell the product on a higher default clock for the same price, beating the rival AMD on the price/value.

    • @markoulas2
      @markoulas2 6 років тому +9

      Easy answer! The profit for not soldering is almost minimal compared to any other expenses intel have.
      1. Chips that run hotter die faster(so more sales for them on the long run).
      2. Overclockers can not gain much benefit with overclocks so they upgrade their cpu more often.
      3. People are delidding their cpu and loose warranty so less hassle for them with warranty stuff.
      The cost for soldering a cpu or putting a proper thermal paste is a joke and what intel wants you to believe. I stated the 3 reason above.

    • @Philafxs

Only logical reason I can think of for Intel to use so bad thermal paste is they WANT your CPU to run hot. This is to make sure it will only last just as long as the warranty and also not over clock well, all to make you buy new, faster and / or more expensive CPU... I absolutely hate all companies that is so greedy that they sabotage their own products to sell more.

      The Superpixeljunkie The animation software I use benefits a lot from high clock speeds/single core performance, so that's why I didn't want a 1950X. Now though, I'm leaning towards a 8700k, which still uses cheap TIMs, but at least it costs less than half of what they charge for the 7900x and it has better single core performance. Bonus is that it uses way less power and better for games on my off time. The only downside is there's less PCI lanes available, which I know I would populate.

    Try some mild heating of the CPU-package before delidding. We're not talking fingers-crossed-oven-baking-solder-melting temperatures, but merely heating the package from 20-something to ~80°C (aka. way below operating temperature for an i9 :P ) will result in a significant decrease in the required delidding force for an unsoldered chip (and an increased shear force ratio between the solder and the thermal compound) as the shear strength of the silicone is temperature dependent.
    Delidding an unsoldered chip rarely usher any complications - especially when the shear-method is used, but it can be a disconcerting endeavour in deed :)

I ask because i ordered by accident from 2 different shops, the same cpu by accident but now i wanna try and see which one is better. One of the store return policy already expired.

    I didn't even know this was possible given possible dust contamination and the possibility of breaking those tiny tiny tiny little wires you usually see in inside a chip from the pins to the die. I didn't think so far as to realise the die is directly in contact with the pads underneath. Mind blown on a Friday afternoon. Good time of the week for it.

    Why didnt you use something like Liquid Ultra or Liquid pro. As those are liquid metal, the heat transfer is amazing with them. As for your comment about running bare die cooling, you said that theres no easy way to keep the cpu held into the socket. Incorrect, if you have the right cooler mounts, you lay your system on its side so that when you place the cpu in, it lays flat, then add your thermal compound and mount the cooler and the pressure from the cooler keeps the cpu in with good contact. I am currently running a bare die cooling setup with my 4790K and a Supremacy Evo waterblock with Liquid Ultra as the thermal compound. With that setup, I was able to maintain 5ghz at 1.48v under water with a max temp of around 85c. (dont do that, it no likey that voltage) Personally I think you should do a video on bare die cooling with modern cpus and give extreme overclocking a try. EK sells the mounting rods (whatever they are called) so that the waterblock will lay directly on the die.

      Zombie Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut. It is liquid metal.
      Edit: Aaaand I just noticed he used Kryonaut.

      they only started putting IHSs on becasue people where bricking P3s with the insane mounting systems back then.
      Nothing wrong with running bare die

      Isaak neither CPU in this video are using any sort of liquid metal thermal conductor. I took a look online at conductonaut and it is different than what is shown in the video. Also with liquid metal it has a distinct look and applying it takes a bit. I usually use a toothpick to apply it. I believe using actual liquid metal would help temps quite a bit. Especially for overclocking the i9.
      Edit:posted before I saw your edit 😂

      Andrew Joy running bare die is amazing imo. But only if you know what youre doing. As for warranty. I've done some damage to 2 or 3 4790Ks. All were delidded. I just added some thermal compound, smacked on the ihs with some super glue, made sure it was straight and Intel replaced the cpus without any issue. The chips also had no physical sign of damage. They did that with my 5ghz chip too. Man I'm still pissed I degraded it with that voltage. It was a great chip. Ran at 4.8 with 1.3v and after it degraded. So like 3 weeks of running at 5ghz, it needed 1.35v to be stable at 4.4ghz

    I don't think warranty is a problem. CPUs are not just failing left and right. After you test it, OC it and find out if it's good, the chance it'll randomly just fail is rather small. And 20 degrees is not insignificant.

    Linus I don't know if u said this already in some vids but the main issue with the new Intel cpus is that the stock voltages are CRAZY HIGH. Just setting the voltage cools the cpu by 10°C if not more.
