    Hi Rebecca, I have the Giant Orange isopod variety in both my Leos vivs. They hangout in their damp caves and under rocks near their water dishes where the most moisture is. I often see one or two venturing out and roaming around the floor. they have survived for a long time now. The secret to my success is I also feed them custodian fuel and an occasional level teaspoon of bug grub (they do not eat the urites). I have not had any success with springtails surviving but I keep trying. I have 10 cultures of these in Jam jars to top up from. Meal worm beetles (from escaped meal worms) do an excellent clean up job as do the meal worms that keep hatching out in the vivs from the Beetles. I seem to have an unintentional breeding cycle going in all my bioactive setups from escaped meal/morio worms which keeps them 95% spotless. Neither of my Leos like the taste of Orange Isopods!. After the initial taste test they spat them out and now just ignore them lol.
    I also had success with feeding all my geckos Locusts for the first time following your video about offering then "butt" first!. (Does look like a wax worm lol).

    • @leopardgeckotalk
      @leopardgeckotalk  4 роки тому

      Thanks for this! I may add a few orange ones in too as they do really well in my other tanks, and are a bit easier to spot. I've always been a bit reluctant to add meal worm beetles in, in case they breed, as I've heard the mealworms destroy roots 😬

    • @starbyray7828
      @starbyray7828 4 роки тому

      @@leopardgeckotalk Just thought I would share my experience with you. I did not add the meal worm/darkling beetles by design lol it was purely accidental. (Escapees from tong feeding). I remove them into a separate culture when I can. They just seem to have laid eggs in the arcadia earth arid soil. So new worms constantly appear. There aren't any live plants in my Leo vivs. There are in my Crestie vivs. The plants flourish in these. I also add a milk bottle lid of Bug Grub which I top up when its all eaten (the isopods gather round like water buffalo at a water hole!). I Lose more plants to destruction caused by my male Crestie making death defying leaps from above onto them lol. The Orange Isopods do not destroy healthy plants like the greys do. Take care :0)

    I have giant canyon isopods in my leopard gecko’s vivarium. Similarly to your set up, I can not get to where my leopard gecko defecates. Fun fact: Leopard geckos only like to poo on really dry soil not on humid soil.... so decide which corner you would like him to poop and keep the others damp when you mist daily. That way he will find the dry corner and start pooping there.
    My little ray of sunshine does not eat his tropical greys that I'm aware of, but he does go digging under a piece of cork that is a hot spot for them so maybe he does - they do mass produce so if anything I am more concerned about them over running the tank... maybe the crickets will help? I don't know, for now I'm just leaving it :D.
    Put a rock or a cork bark near the poop corner and they will naturally find a reason to breed there amoungst other choice places. But don't worry about putting poop next to them, they will find what they want and that is true of springtails as well. It does take time for the population to get going though - expect about 3 months before you start seeing them randomly.
    Dried Ficus leaves (the common house hold pot plant) are a real favourite for all isopods I find... so if you have one keep all the dried leaves and put them in the tank. :)
    Happy days! good luck!

      Thanks :) I've never actually noticed that before, I guess they do usually try to find a spot the furthest away from where they sleep, which is why I found Diego's toilet area a weird choice. We'll see how it all goes, but thanks for the tips :)

      New geckos (including your first) should be quarantined on paper towel for the first six weeks. Good solids include paper towel and textured tile. It’s best to offer digging enrichment over six months with reptisoil, organic top soil, or a bioactive mix. Half tile half soil is good as well.

    With mine I started to keep a side of the tank more moist in one specific corner and gradually expanded it to about a third of the Viv. Generally that species of gecko will go to the lou where its most damp. Which is probably why he's using the back corner where the air can't dry out that spot.

      @@MightyFineMedia I just meant I keep the damp part for my clean up crew and that geckos generally use the bathroom in the area where its most damp to use the bathroom because its the area they like the least and the humidity helps them to use the bathroom. I don't know everything about them, I'm just a vet tech and not a veterinarian yet. But I do a lot of research on the animals I keep. This species of gecko being one of them. And you're right, they do really avoid the wet side unless it's something their bodies need and generally every species of lizard in captivity would prefer a wet side and dry side for shed and bathroom purposes. And yes you're also right, every animal is different.

    Hi, over the past year, my crested gecko who is full grown has gone from 46 grams down to 36, should I be concerned? I know that 36 grams is healthy for a crestie but going from 46 to 36 is pretty substantial.

    • @EZS248

      I would be concerned to be honest. I have not had this happen though because I have a young female crested gecko who is currently 15g+ and she is growing quite quickly. It still seems like a healthy weight though so maybe see if the weight still decreases and if yes take it to the vet. If you are very concerned take it to the vet now. Be careful, you don’t want her to become overweight. Waxworms should be rare treats only. Mealworms should make up no more than 25% of her diet. Just feed her plenty of healthy feeders such as crickets and Dubia roaches for her to gain weight healthily. How old is she?

      Check Craigslist for geckos being rehomed. Check morph market, just research the breeder before buying. Avoid BHB, underground reptiles, LLL, backwater reptiles, snakes at sunset, and cb reptiles. Smaller hobbyist breeders tend to be better than large scale breeders.
      If your parents are concerned about geckos from a breeder being “too expensive”, they better be willing/able to pay for expensive emergency vet bills when necessary. Reptiles aren’t cheap.

This will be my first reptile and it's for my seven year old son. He loves animals and is really very good with them. I'll give him lots of help in the beginning, of course. My chief concerns are getting a healthy gecko that has a good temperament.
