    I was raised in a cult, Jehovah's Witnesses, I was stuck in along with my husband and 2 children until I was 46. I'm about to turn 51. My children, honestly my daughter coming out to us, is a large part of us all waking up. Weve been happily married for over 30 years! And i try and remember if i wasn't a JW, i never would have met my wonderful husband... so i try and find something good even though other than my parents, after 46years... no One, i mean no ONE, including the over 300 ppl at my wedding will speak to us anymore... I am so happy I found your channel! My win for the week was that when I spoke to my very indoctrinated father yesterday, about my car, he's a retired mechanic, I kept my cool...❤🎉

      That’s gotta be rough. Wow I’m sorry you lost so many people in this process. I’m just a stranger to you on the internet but I’m also 46 and my oldest came out when she was 12. And aside from a few snide comments from my mother (former Catholic) my family has largely accepted this part of her without any doubt or criticism. I saw a commentary on this before and I’m still struck by that they didn’t know what IBLP was but felt qualified to be in a docuseries about it anyway and then didn’t like how they were portrayed. If that doesn’t completely encapsulate how they move about in the world I don’t know what does. Also, I’m still slimed by them saying Jinger is good and Jill is bad when it comes to their speaking about their experiences. They don’t get to decide for victims how to process.

    Great video. Love your nuanced take on it. I can understand Paul's disappointment with how they were portrayed and the documentary could maybe have been a little bit more clear about the Joshua generation and why they were including those examples, but... When all is said and done... Paul and Morgan's influence is a harmful one, and they need to take a step back and realize that. For example... Later on in the video, they talk about the positive experiences in homeschooling and submission by the wives and how those positive experiences being ignored is gaslighting... What they don't realize is that their insistence that all women should submit to their husband is gaslighting the billions of women who would not enjoy such a life.
    A comment directed more at B Haney herself, regarding 'victims turning away from god'. The narrative that 'the damage' is what turns people away from god is a dangerous one and often untrue. It adds to the bucket, sure, but severe victimhood often forces people to take a good look at the world and leave their bubble behind them. It isn't "the damage" which does it. It is "reality".

    You have no idea how validated I feel by your comments at the end about parables and not everything in the Bible being literal historical fact. I’m not religious any longer, but I was raised evangelical and had that thought myself as a kid/young teen and when I voiced it everyone in my life acted like I had lost it (probably contributed to the deconstruction tbh). Which confused me because there are a ton of parables in the Bible and it’s old and if God could make Adam from a pile of dirt, why couldn’t he have orchestrated or started the process of evolution? 15 years later, it’s good to know someone else has thought something similar. 😂 I’m sure other people think this, I’ve just never heard someone voice it the same way I have.

    I was homeschooled k-12 across 5 different states, and in IBLP-adjacent circles for some of those states. Every homeschooler in knew has severe trauma from it, some of them ended up taking their own lives in young adulthood because they couldn't cope and were completely robbed of the necessary skills or knowledge to even know that there might be help out there in the normal world. Anyone who would fight for unregulated religious homeschooling unfortunately has blood on their hands, and I seriously wonder if the homeschoolers Paul and Morgan are referencing are actually okay.

    • @OliviaRValle
      @OliviaRValle 11 місяців тому +3

      I was homeschooled in a Christian home although not using anything even close to IBLP material. My mom grew up going to public school and wanted to homeschool her kids. She formed a non religious homeschooling group because she wanted anyone from any walk of life to have support with homeschooling and all the other options were faith based ones. Even though most of the members in our group were Christian, it was open to everyone. I don’t feel like I had any trauma from homeschooling. Because of my personality, public school would have been extremely stressful for me.

      @@OliviaRValle that's really good for you, but when it comes down to it what @chocolatecoveredspam posted is right. Fighting for unregulated homeschooling does result in having blood on your hands. There are so many reasons to homeschool a child, but you can't deny that folks with terrible souls will use and abuse an unregulated system to hurt children. Not every type of school/education system will fit every child, and keeping in mind what is best for children and getting them to an independent adulthood is the goal.

    • @DimaRakesah
      @DimaRakesah 7 місяців тому

      Not to mention that unregulated schooling allows parents to keep their kids incredibly ignorant. For example, many extremists use it to ensure their daughters are so poorly educated they cannot function on their own and being a housewife is their only skillset. Using unregulated schooling to control the entire lives of your kids through lack of options is just abusive.

Now to Morgan and Paul: Their empty way of thinking is the funnel to the very form of " culty Christian extremist" that they think they are not. I believe that if given the platform or position they would be extreme and are only not because it's not cool. They were asked to be in the doc because they and Girl Define have similar views and practices to the IBLP church. They saw their beliefs reflected through the lense of the IBLP and to some extent realized that made their beliefs look really harmful, because many of them are. It's telling how later they pulled a 180 and started arguing that they can and should be 'extreme' because that's what 'the left' are doing so it's justified. Make up your minds.

      Our daughters attended private Christian schools, public schools, and we homeschooled, each at various times during their years growing up. Regardless of the setting or the individual school, their success was largely dependent upon our involvement at home with homework and keeping tabs on what was happening in the classroom. Re. curricula -- each school offered the expected subjects: math, science, social studies, English, foreign language, one or more creative arts or elective offerings, PE, and history. Public schools espoused a propaganda-like view of US history, portraying this country as an almost all-benevolent world power.
      The larger Christian school had a more preparatory focused curriculum from a Protestant world view, but the US propaganda was much the same as in the public schools. The small, AofG school's curriculum was full-on Sunday School with every single subject defined and directed by the Bible, as the curriculum authors and editors saw it, of course. This included the most propagandistic presentation of US and world history of the three, often espousing and promoting outright perversions of historical facts. I did regard Christian school attendance as a sort of protection for our eldest. That is a fallacy, of course. Our motivations in homeschooling had to do with advanced learning needs that could not be accommodated with a 1/25+ teacher/student ratio. I truly believe that if our motivation for homeschooling is to protect our children, we limit, if not cripple, their ability to embrace the fullness of God and His creation; including their ability to love unconditionally - especially anyone unlike themselves. Isolation breeds fear and apprehension toward everything, every idea, and everyone outside the imagined safety of that isolation. We simply cannot sidestep our existence within the structure and confines of our physical world. And if we truly believe God is the Creator, why would we want to?

    • @pantaleimona
      @pantaleimona 10 місяців тому

      @@hanatemonstas4485 The propagandizing of US history, which I consider a perversion - not merely a mistaken, but rather an intentional misrepresentation of the truth, can be found in curricula from pre-K through HS. Without instruction in and emphasis on critical thinking skills during those school years, this version of US and even world history remains unchallenged. Here are three obvious examples: 1) The pilgrims came to the new world to escape religious persecution in England. 2) The US entered WW2 making both V-E Day and V-J Day possible ... and the allies helped. 3) The US only assists other governments at the behest of those governments' leaders in order to establish or re-establish peace. Such efforts are always benevolent. 4) The founding fathers, all Christians, envisioned and intended a country run on Biblical principles. Number 4 was taught in the private Christian schools' curricula. Re. your second question, yours is an inference I hadn't imagined! Mentioning their gender wasn't intended to imply the existence of other-gendered offspring. :) The educational choices for the children we had were first determined by us as parents and later by us along with input from each individual student. If all circumstances were similar, I imagine we'd have employed similar methodologies no matter each child's gender.

These two and their beliefs speak for themselves so there's no need to be petty about things like her reading from a notebook. I do find it interesting that they seem to believe people on the left want them to apologize for existing, when in reality (at least speaking for myself) it'd just be nice if they weren't spreading bigoted hate. At around the 45 minute mark when you empathize with P&M's defensiveness but also explain where they fall short (leaving the charismatic church but still very much of the same belief system as iblp) in a way that is so clear and also so kind.

    They equate deconstruction to unbelieving, and while I know that is the case for many ex-Christians (and like you say I can TOTALLY understand why someone would walk away from religion), it's not what happens to everyone. I grew up in a fairly standard Christian church and still needed to deconstruct, to pull apart what do I believe against what my parents believe and what do you know I'm still a Christian. I really appreciate you and your channel, as while I was deconstructing it was SO refreshing to hear your perspective and helped me not be scared to ask questions or to be confident in my own conclusions on faith.

    I find it interesting how they talk about untangling faith is good, but deconstructing faith is bad. I know it has to do with their indoctrination, and how words are weaponized. Personally, I prefer the word untangle when it comes to my journey of faith and looking at my indoctrination, because it feels more truthful in describing the pain. For me to say deconstruction feels more cut and dry as in you tear it to the foundation, and then rebuild. For me, the truth of what historical Christianity is versus what I was taught in fundamentalist settings is so intertwined. On the other side of them, it feels like semantics, but I know in their culture labels are so important and from experience seeing the world through black-and-white lenses and taking away nuance is key. I’m just sad for them that they are exposed to opportunities to see the lies of what they are preaching and believe yet double down. And it’s super sad that they have so many followers

    What I don't understand is how they heard that it was about the IBLP and thought "Hmm you know what? We're not like them. We're definitely going to get good coverage from this." when they're constantly being labeled as fundies online. And, I don't understand how knowing it was about the IBLP they thought they were going to get more time to talk about their beliefs. They have a whole ass youtube channel where they get to do that. They have no self awareness at all.

  • @janieingreen
    @janieingreen 10 місяців тому +2

    I think it’s important to note that they actually have NO IDEA what the religion is followed by any of the victims of the IBLP in SHP, and that SHP wasn’t so much about IBLP as it was about the trauma it caused. Another commentary on P&M’s response I watched mentioned that most of their arguments can be boiled down to “why wasn’t this more about *us*?!” And I can’t unsee that now. And finally, they ARE a part of the concept the Joshua generation because they do in fact push many of the same harmful ideas that the IBLP espoused - and Paul even says in the beginning that his family was at least brushing the edges of it! Even if they did find it ultimately too far out there, I think that still says a lot.
    Ugh. I just can’t ever decide if they are being willfully ignorant or they really are that incapable of following someone else’s train of thought. Like…their arguments are always against just a total miscomprehension of an opposing idea. It drives me bananas.

    I think their mention of Luke Parker is very telling, as his appearance on the Bachelorette was a failure of his own making. To summarize for those who don't watch reality TV, he was a virgin and communicated the expectation that his future wife should do the same. When the woman he was dating on the show communicated she was not comfortable with this and wasn't on the same page with this expectation, he became pushy, unkind and even went as far as to publicly question her faith. I don't believe the pushback he got was unfair, his actions were very inappropriate.

    I understand Paul and Morgan's disappointment but they were incredibly naive about the whole process--did they really think they were there to "share the Gospel?"
    Here's how Kirstin DuMez described the experience of being in documentaries on her Substack (written after Shiny Happy People came out): "In general, agreeing to film a documentary is exhausting and, frankly, fairly high risk. Sometimes I’ve filmed for up to 8 hours and I have no idea which few sentences will be used, how they will be framed, or how the project itself will take shape. There is a lot of trust involved."
    They are too old to be this clueless and "not knowing" lets abuse flourish. Since their church and their families taught submission, if Paul was an abuser (definitely not implying anything about them!) then Morgan could be in a very bad situation and without a lot of resources to get out. In contrast, my kid watched the docuseries and said, "Now I wonder how many super-obedient, quiet kids we met from other churches were having the crap beaten out of them at home." Maybe Paul and Morgan should have a bit of compassion instead of whining that they didn't get more screen time. Oh, and Paul and Morgan are NOT part of the Joshual Generation.
