This is "mighty fine magic"! We are prepping a house for sale, moved a LOT of furniture and had some really nasty (as in DEEP) grooves in the carpet. 30 seconds with a steam iron and they lifted up just like that. We even had a depression from a 7 foot grand piano, that came up like there was never anything there. THANKS!
This works like a charm. And BTW, any steamer will do. Doesn't have to be a steam iron, because it's not about the pressure of the iron, it's all about the steam. This will also take out stains!

Just use a ice cube leave it on the mark til it melts and then use your finger or a fork to lift the carpet, no need for towels and irons :)
I tried that method and it didn't work for me.
