Love the packing update! One tip for the merino wool (sorry in advance if you already know… 😅) your laundry soap needs gl be compatible with wool/natural fabrics since regular detergents have enzymes that break down the natural fibers faster!

You are right about the merino wool brands matter. Smart wool that I have gets holes every time I wear them, socks, shirts or bottoms. Slowly replacing the smart wool with Wool X and Wool &. I also have several Alpaca fiber shirts and socks, bra and underwear. I have had to repair any of the items from Paka, Wool X. Haven’t had the Wool & product long enough to evaluate.

This is the first that I’ve heard about the composition of Merino Wool being something to consider. I have bought several t-shirts and sweaters for an upcoming trip to Alaska and had no idea that I needed to be concerned with that. Now I may be sorry with what I bought. I guess I’ll find out when I go. And I guess it’s a matter of you get what you pay for. The Merino Wool items I bought were less expensive. They seem nice but we’ll see.
I have not traveled nearly as much as you, but a couple of years ago I picked up an ice mule. It’s a bit like a dry bag, and could serve as one, but has become my traveling ice chest.
Mico sold me on the Heroclip in your last packing video. My main use for it is hanging a bag or coat up in a toilet cubicle to keep them off the floor. I also love the sea2summit toiletry bag. I can't remember if I got that from you but Nicole's enthusiasm convinced me to not only get one of those make up remover cloths, but to make it the Erase Your Face brand to be sure it would be good. Funnily enough I've also just started trying the Wool& brand (waiting for my first dress to come). I've been impressed with Woolovers & Dilling so far. I like a mix of wool and silk and that the wool isn't treated like smartwool is. I'm giving darn tough socks a go as they have a lifetime guarantee and the merino gives them extra wears before washing.

Nice to learn the torrentshell can be used for colder climate. So you just wear the puffy or some layer underneathe? Down to what temp have you used it? The guys at the store told me the torrentshell was more for rainy days up to autumn temps at best.
I’m so curious about Marino wool but I’m allergic to lanolin in normal wool so I’ve avoided it in the past but it seems like such a good travel option.
@TessaOswin - Me, too! Seems very rare. I’ve had people look at me like I’ve got two heads as the concept seems so foreign to most people. Unfortunately I haven’t found anything that’s a great alternative yet. So far, I don’t do cold/snowy 🥶places. Good Luck on your journeys!
Thanks so much, we're glad you enjoyed the video! I'm super lucky when it comes to dealing with my period on the road - I have a hormonal IUD and lost my period as a result of the IUD. If you're going traveling for a long time and are okay with hormonal birth control it could be a good option for you too (although not everyone loses their periods entirely). If I did still get my period, I'd bring a diva cup with me and get tampons/pads as needed on the road. Hope that helps!
I love the new Marino wool dress and undergarment set. Mostly the colors. When I travel I pic the same color themes for everything to mix and match and flow. I like low key, earth tones, like shades of greens, sage to olive to forrest green or deep jade...that burnt orange is cool.... cream, tan, brown, stuff that blends in with most surroundings and allot of black but only for cold/winter now for good reasons, and especially in hot, humid and/or buggy climates. So, like those garments you just got, and for me personally, those colors are perfect...but people prefer blues, grey now, white, which is cool but as long as everything in low key mode and blends with nature and fades away in crowds☆ My guy goes for more tan or kaki, creams to light and grey, some white. He follows sort of the grey man philosophy. He was in the military. The tell tale for vulnerability is when people are all mismatched. And especially in bright colors head to toe. Even pastels like pinks, purples leans more juvenile and feminine vs. more sophisticated or put together atleast and serious or professional. Bright colors sure may be fun but if you land in a place where disaster strikes, often the first few days the thugs come out in full force. Also key is eye catching stuff signals you out to anyone like possibly shady authorities, or maybe desperate locals who think you have something they may need and that could happen anywhere on the planet. Think hot pink, bright red, pop blue, canary yellow, omg, to me are very, very bad choices across the board. Sad high end sport/ mountaineering companies all pimp these colors to stand out... I get it. But there is a time and a place for everything and when packing capacity is low like more than weekend travel, a balance in common sense for all types of senerios which often better a choice or especially high 'investment'$$$. I don't want to pop out and scream 'look at me, I am a tourist' or to even express in any way I want attention. So to blend in has allot of benefits. Especially if you have to blend in out of safety in general. Say you are being followed. Regardless, criminals don't wait for disasters. Having a good head lamp with you at all times is another huge benefit period. Hands free lighting. But also, in addition, a good high lumin flash light. They come very small now. Something high blast and with a stobe feature. Nightcore, Olite, many brands have rechagable, long time run and pocket sized lights that will blast 1000 lumins or more in someones face or possibly an animal. I have seen 900 lumin key chain size flashlights. So weight should never be an excuse. Costs hurt but they do for good bags, good shoes and all these high end clothes. Goid cameras which are not going to safe your life... When you blind an assailant it gives you such an advantage in time to get loose or get away. Of course there is so much more to carry, but what is legal where for international travel or even national travel now is a nightmare. A flashlight and headlamp is like basic insurance. I got with the Nightcore NU25 with the shock cord band to save space, and my favorite flashlight is the tiny Olite HR2 front facing, 900 lumin, both usb rechargeable. I can fit both together in the palm of my hand basically. When it gets dusk I just put the headlamp around my neck and always sleep with it on camping and never know it's there it's so small. I have the newer model too, and it is a bit bigger, bigger battery and that really makes a difference. So I went back to using the older model. Plus my shock cord modification is much softer. The new one comes with it, and it's really hard and stiff. I should just change it our, huh...lol. Next would be to always have a good whistle. Attach it to your EDC bag or every day carry. Pick a bright color so you can see it. Mine is Blaze orange and a theme for my signaling, rescue and even some tool like pocket knives or leatherman Juice, lighters incase they fall in the forrest I can see them easier. I got as far as carrying a Blaze orange bandana for the purpose of signaling if I need to get rescued. I could tie this on a tall stick and make a flag. Where I live and play its a signal to hunters. And that is what I use in the meantime to freshen up, say wash my face, whatever, it's not waisted space. A bandana never is. I keep one in my day packs always. I keep a white cotten hankerchief for it's intended purpose but also to prefilter water. Prefilter water meaning using a straw or other devise. The hankerchief does NOT have toxic dyes or laundry detergants to further contaminate water. Plus it then can be used for medical. And one big thing I never see travel people pack is a good water filter. I have a small filter straw in my EDC by Aquamira called the Frontier Pro, it's very small like a fat marker. This is so common sense, especially for the size and cheap price tag. It's my back up. I use the Be Free by Katadyne as a primary, 2L, plus I pack one extra 2L bladder by Hydropak, the company that makes the stock bladders for Katadyne, and the model that pairs for the spare is the 'Seeker'. Hydropak bottles can be frozen or hold boiling water. This makes them a medical item replacing ice packs and hot water bottles. They have attachment points so they can be used as a gravity feed system, so further like a wash up station to hang on a tree by using the sports cap or they even offer a spray type nozzle. This whole system with the extra 2L bladder bottle packs down so small and light you could store this in a jacket pocket. Some of the best 'insurance' just being able to filter and carry 4 L of water is pretty responsible (along with having light). Another small item, tiny is a bit of trail marking tape. Especially for adventures in places where GPS is spotty or non existent. It is so small it's crazy not to have some in a kit. I wrap up a plastic store card in Gorilla tape for repairs and Leuko sports tape, this tape to cover hot spots that will form blisters. Leuko is also my medical tape for wounds or to cover bandaid to ensure they stay clean and dry. Like earplugs that do more then just keeping noise out, but bugs out of your ears if you have to sleep outdoors overnight stuck somewhere, multi purpose and really simple, light, small items are so key. Another use is if it's really cold, or super windy, earplugs protect your inner ears from especially wind which could literally cause vertigo or face paralysis. Next I don't care if it's 100 degrees I bring my buff. Again mine are earth tones and not Marino, more cotten, spandex I find wool too itchy in sticky heat. I wet mine down to keep cool. Can use as a cover for my head, keep my hair tamed, etc., etc. And with any outdoorsy type stuff... hikes, camping, even in city parks, black is a hard color to wear 3 seasons, because bugs are hard to see. Especially ticks. So like my clothes in greens, so are all of my bags are all olive green now, because bags often land on the ground. Oh, and I have a teeny pair of OR super light weight gaiters, I would think maybe similar to Dirty Girl but without the wild patterns, so to protect my shoes and avoid the pesky pebble, but more so to see creepy crawlers traveling up from the ground. One wind makes a super light ground sheet, something waterproof to sit on, great for the park or beach. This thing is so tiny, aa small as a packable grocery bag. That live in my EDC. It has gromets so I have used it as a sun shelter on a picnic just string it up with sime Kevlar which is a super strong tiny cord, almost embroidary thread size really. I also pack a rain poncho/tarp by this same brand. So between the two I have upper and ground shelter. Smaller then most rain jackets and covers my pack and some of my legs when on. Another great find that has really been a game changer is similar to those Stasher bags you have for your food. I got zip lock silcone bags dirt cheep in snack, sandwhich, quart and gallon size. They come in sets of 4 each size. I use these for everything now, even for some clothes packing, especially for the beach, or gloves, hat, extra socks for hiking. They compress all the air out. Great to keep things dry, like tech, phone, camera, great on boats... in rain...and keep wet stuff from seeping all over. They hold food obviously and so liquids. They can be frozen or hold hot food, or be put in boiling water to make food like rice -rehydrate food. They are dish washer safe. I buy these sets for under 15 dollars. My first few were 10 dollars on Amazon, my last ones were 13$. Great for medical kits as well. Shower kit, hold soap, I have one snack size for my tooth brush and paste. I have my liquids in a sandwhich size in the silocine bottles first.... I have one for reststop bathroom kit, with my hand sanitizer, etc. The snack size is amazing for so many things. Being Silcone, they slip in and out of packs well. The snack size fits perfect in my packable waistepack by 4Monster. I buy the clear ones, they are kind of frosty, Chinese brands, there are several I look for the best price they are all the same... I got a tip in comments to only buy those with a rim, meaning not direct edge sealed like a 'Zip Lock' brand freezer or sandwhich bag and because the seams don't split like ziplocks or 'Locktight' bags very popular at one time, which 100 percent always did. I have been using the same ones for over two years now and none have failed. No need to label because you can see through them. Another benefit. Being Silicone also it's easy to clean out sticky stuff like melted candy, gum, snacks. Because they have aliitle girth to them or stability I just used one to soak my figer after a cut. Also I was thinking these could be a clean vessel to wash out an eye or irrigate a wound so just more medical uses besides keeping your items sealed and sterile, unlike like in other nylon bags and med kits. Hope this all helps.
Oh gosh we totally forgot them when we packed our bags! When we are on the move, both of our laptops go into Mico's day bag. We occasionally pack them in our check-in luggage for flights, but that's very rare as we like to keep them close so we never lose them!

So for big hikes like Patagonia and Everest Base Camp we brought specific hiking boots. After we were done the hikes we just sent them home via regular mail or with family/friends that we were with who were heading home. For everything else we just used sneakers or sandals (with proper foot support) and they have been great 😊 glad you enjoyed the video! Feel free to ask us anything else! 😀
Your toiletries such as leave in conditioner is pretty small. How often do you top them up and with what? Are you having to buy normal sizes, use a little and throw the rest away?

Hey! We mostly don't have the occasion to dress up really fancy because we are on a tight budget, but the few times we have had to dress up a bit, Mico wears his white button up shirt and I wear my dress. And then we generally wear our sneakers, but I've also worn my Birkenstocks even though they're open toed! We got invited to a wedding super randomly in Turkey once and both wore our sneakers 😂

I bought a fairview trek 50 for my first long solo trip to Asia, and I was hoping I might get away with not always checking it in, especially if I'll be able to start my trip not using all the space.. but the frame is quite tall, so we'll see. 😅
I find your video is very informative and helpful. I am so happy I watched your video. Anyway, I do have a couple of questions. Do you pack your portable charger for your laptop with your checked backpack or with your carry on? Is the its rated energy okay? I am not sure where keep my portable charger of 20,000mAh/1,000* 3.7V=74Wh? . Another question is that I have my electronic toothbrush (Aqua-sonic) which is 0.8-1.6w. I am not sure if i can take it wit me on the plane. Can you advise? Thank you so much.
Question about your plug adapter. My husband and I are traveling to South Asia this year and were told by our friends there it would be best to buy a power converter with the plug adapters since a lot of those countries have higher amp plugs than we do in Canada and it could fry some things you plug in. Is this something you've ever encountered issues with?
That’s a great question! So between Nepal, India and Sri Lanka we spent about 9 months travelling there and this entire time we just traveled with our the universal adapter in our video. It worked great and we never had issues with power conversion. Most times electronics can handle different voltage standards that different countries have so it’s never an issue charging laptops, phones, cameras, etc. The only thing we had to worry about were hair straighteners because sometimes they were locked into using a specific voltage (like 110 volts we have in Canada) but for this Nicole had a travel specific straightener that can accommodate different voltages. Outside of this I think you’ll be perfectly fine with a good old plug adapter 😊
I chronologically over pack and am also a fashion freak and can't re-wear clothes in the same week. I am going to Japan this September. How could I pack minimally for a two week trip.
This is great! Can you speak sometime to using your backpacks for trekking? For example, on wilderness treks are you able to strap trekking poles and tents to the side of the bags?
We absolutely LOVE these backpacks for trekking. We have taken them on many multi day hikes in Patagonia and the Canadian Rockies and they perform amazing. Minimal, durable and has so many great features for hiking that we forget that it’s also ideal for traveling. We go into the backpack deeper during our Patagonia trekking prep video (I will link it below) but in a nutshell the backpack just has the right amount of packets, generous amount of straps, and really great yet not bulky suspension system. Actually if you watch our Patagonia trekking video and not just the prep video then you can really see it in action. We attach poles, tents, jackets and anything else we need to it during the video. Only think I would say is that if you want this for trekking/hiking only and not really for travelling, then I would invest in a separate, lightweight rain cover. The cover it comes with is more heavy duty because it acts as a full wrap for when you check in the bag at airports so it’s a little overkill for the trail. In that case, we can highly recommend this backpack! Honestly, it’s been so perfect for our travel and outdoor lifestyle. We’re so impressed with how it’s held up. Both our bags look almost brand new (except some ripped mesh on one of Mico’s side pockets) and somehow the zippers are still in perfect condition even though I (Nicole) have pushed them past where they should probably be pushed 😂

So glad you're finding the video(s) helpful! We don't use any money belts or security bags under our clothes. I (Nicole) did that for a few months when I took my first "big" trips as an adult, and quickly found that they brought more attention instead of less. I often got the feeling that pulling money out of the belt to pay for things made it look like I was carrying enough money to be worth hiding. Our strategy instead has been to blend in as best as possible, and never carry more money/cards than necessary whenever we leave our accommodation. Maybe you've already seen it, but in case you haven't come across it yet, we recently made a whole video on how we deal with money while traveling. I've really been enjoying all of your videos and tips and this one is no different! My husband and I are also full-time travelers, and I have two dorky packing questions for you. I want to not pack my hiking boots and just use my walking shoes for our day hikes, but I hate having my walking shoes dirty for wandering around town the rest of the time. Do you just not let it bother you, or wash your shoes after every hike & replace them more often, or ?? 2nd question - I also struggle with not packing slippers or cushy flip-flops to wear in the house, because my feet hurt on hard floors (or freeze, depending on where we are). So glad you enjoy our videos! We’re so happy it’s providing some nice tips for your trip. Regarding shoes we also opted to leave our hiking boots behind. All the hiking we’ve done in Central America thus far have been doable with just good walking shoes with some traction. We both have Vessis and love them for their easy to wash material so that’s helped to keep them clean. Nicole has white ones which is harder to keep clean and I (Mico) just go around with black ones and wash them every so often. Not too bad at all 😊 in terms of home shoes we just carry around a pair of flip flops for the house and showers. It’s mostly for showers because we hate going barefoot in them! You can also use a slip on sandal with socks if that would help to save space. Our flip flops for the house though has gotten us through many places without issues and it feels a little cleaner no matter where we stay. We hope this answers your questions! Aiming for a 30l backpack and a daypack personal item both weightless unpacked as dont want to ever lose a bag again! Mybiggest issue is I need to take meds and cold warm clothing as feel cold as asthmatic. Last time had to buy then leave thicker clothing behind.. I ll have to take anything I own as wont hsve anywhere to store it. Baselayer thermal are great..❤any hint ee a mosquito spray that works have tried deet and anything nothing worked at all. Do you think solo could manage on 850 gbp a month if stay in hostel dorms?
Base layers are awesome! And we truly feel like they’re a great option for those who run cold but don’t want to take a lot of bulky clothing. We normally just use any old bug spray we find at the store. Sometimes deet and sometimes the citronella kind. In regards to your budget it sounds pretty good but it will really depend on where you’re travelling to. What countries do you hope to visit on your trip? For example if you’re sticking to south east Asia then this budget might be doable. Your biggest expense (outside of flights) will be your accommodation so we suggest looking at those closely! Safe travels!
Thank you so much! 😊 we don’t have any special pillows except for Nicole’s blow up travel pillow which she swears by 😄 and for computers we normally keep one in our carry on bag and the other in check in. If we don’t need to do any work we will just put it all in check in. Sometimes we’ve flown with airlines who don’t like having computers in the check in bags so we’ve had to take them out but those are rare.

I was listening to a young woman in a shoeshine here in South Africa - she was complaining about having to buy new boots because while she was in England she left her boots out side the backdoor of a house. Do you think you could pack all you brought If you used the 40L Osprey bags? Would you be able to Carry On 40L vs required checked bag on most flights? Is it just me, or are airline bag dimensions getting smaller and smaller while bag fees get bigger and bigger?
Probably not all the electronics and the extra things that help facilitate our travel AND working lifestyle. When we first left for full time travel, we spent the first 10 months with the Kathmandu 38L Litehaul and it was perfect. We outgrew it because of our extra UA-cam gear but you can definitely travel out of a small backpack. I think in general a fully loaded 40 L backpack is the max you can fit for carry on. This could be reduced if you’re flying on smaller planes though
I’m curious about, your day packs. How do you secure them walking around do you aren’t pick pocketed? Nicole I really like yours but I’m always worried about someone getting into it walking around a place like Rome
Great question! We do a couple things to mitigate the risk of someone nabbing stuff from our bags. Mico often puts a carabiner on the zippers of his bag to attach them together. It's a small thing and someone could still get into it if they really tried, but it's enough of a deterrent to keep people away (at least we think so given that we've never been robbed!). Something else we do a lot (specifically me) is to hold my bag on my front instead of my back. I do this anytime we're in a crowd of people and someone could potentially unzip my bag without me knowing. I do it in markets and public transit tons and it really helps! A good rule is we follow is that if you see locals wearing their bags on their front, we definitely will too. But we do it all the time just to be safe because we realize we are big targets as people who stick out. Of course you could always get a lock for your bag, but in all our travels we've never felt it necessary to go that far. I hope that helps!
We use the “Packtowl” towels and love them! Very light and don’t take up a lot of space but also doesn’t feel like weird microfibre towels. A nice in between.

Hey there! I bought my white shirt in Colombia and it does wrinkle so much! What I do to help with the wrinkles is carry a tiny spray bottle around with me and I just fill that with water and spray the shirt down when I want to wear it (the night before if I remember, but right before I put it on is fine too). That gets rid of the wrinkles really well! I found a shirt very similar to mine on Amazon that you could check out to get a closer look. I really like the 3/4 length sleeves on this one and it doesn't have a breast pocket which is my preference (otherwise it looks a bit too casual for my liking) amzn.to/3HtO0SB

I have been really loving merino wool socks in the past 1.5 year and think they are a gamechanger, and also wear merino wool in the winter. I'll definitely need to check Wool& out! I'm still looking for female merino wool tshirts that don't seem too fragile (I have Unbound Merino tshirts and dress but they feel too fragile. I too prefer a blend)

Yes you can assuming you don’t have a ton of the electronics and some extra clothing. For the first 10 months of our travel we had only a 38L pack each and flew carry on. A lot of the stuff we have in this video hasn’t really changed but back then we had a few less shirts and a lot less UA-cam gear. Very doable though!

You are right about the merino wool brands matter. Smart wool that I have gets holes every time I wear them, socks, shirts or bottoms. Slowly replacing the smart wool with Wool X and Wool &. I also have several Alpaca fiber shirts and socks, bra and underwear. I have had to repair any of the items from Paka, Wool X. Haven’t had the Wool & product long enough to evaluate.

This is the first that I’ve heard about the composition of Merino Wool being something to consider. I have bought several t-shirts and sweaters for an upcoming trip to Alaska and had no idea that I needed to be concerned with that. Now I may be sorry with what I bought. I guess I’ll find out when I go. And I guess it’s a matter of you get what you pay for. The Merino Wool items I bought were less expensive. They seem nice but we’ll see.
I have not traveled nearly as much as you, but a couple of years ago I picked up an ice mule. It’s a bit like a dry bag, and could serve as one, but has become my traveling ice chest.

Mico sold me on the Heroclip in your last packing video. My main use for it is hanging a bag or coat up in a toilet cubicle to keep them off the floor.
I also love the sea2summit toiletry bag. I can't remember if I got that from you but Nicole's enthusiasm convinced me to not only get one of those make up remover cloths, but to make it the Erase Your Face brand to be sure it would be good.
Funnily enough I've also just started trying the Wool& brand (waiting for my first dress to come). I've been impressed with Woolovers & Dilling so far. I like a mix of wool and silk and that the wool isn't treated like smartwool is.
I'm giving darn tough socks a go as they have a lifetime guarantee and the merino gives them extra wears before washing.

Nice to learn the torrentshell can be used for colder climate. So you just wear the puffy or some layer underneathe? Down to what temp have you used it? The guys at the store told me the torrentshell was more for rainy days up to autumn temps at best.
I’m so curious about Marino wool but I’m allergic to lanolin in normal wool so I’ve avoided it in the past but it seems like such a good travel option.

Thanks so much, we're glad you enjoyed the video! I'm super lucky when it comes to dealing with my period on the road - I have a hormonal IUD and lost my period as a result of the IUD. If you're going traveling for a long time and are okay with hormonal birth control it could be a good option for you too (although not everyone loses their periods entirely). If I did still get my period, I'd bring a diva cup with me and get tampons/pads as needed on the road. Hope that helps!

I love the new Marino wool dress and undergarment set. Mostly the colors. When I travel I pic the same color themes for everything to mix and match and flow. I like low key, earth tones, like shades of greens, sage to olive to forrest green or deep jade...that burnt orange is cool.... cream, tan, brown, stuff that blends in with most surroundings and allot of black but only for cold/winter now for good reasons, and especially in hot, humid and/or buggy climates.
So, like those garments you just got, and for me personally, those colors are perfect...but people prefer blues, grey now, white, which is cool but as long as everything in low key mode and blends with nature and fades away in crowds☆
My guy goes for more tan or kaki, creams to light and grey, some white. He follows sort of the grey man philosophy.
He was in the military.
The tell tale for vulnerability is when people are all mismatched. And especially in bright colors head to toe. Even pastels like pinks, purples leans more juvenile and feminine vs. more sophisticated or put together atleast and serious or professional. Bright colors sure may be fun but if you land in a place where disaster strikes, often the first few days the thugs come out in full force. Also key is eye catching stuff signals you out to anyone like possibly shady authorities, or maybe desperate locals who think you have something they may need and that could happen anywhere on the planet.
Think hot pink, bright red, pop blue, canary yellow, omg, to me are very, very bad choices across the board. Sad high end sport/ mountaineering companies all pimp these colors to stand out... I get it. But there is a time and a place for everything and when packing capacity is low like more than weekend travel, a balance in common sense for all types of senerios which often better a choice or especially high 'investment'$$$.
I don't want to pop out and scream 'look at me, I am a tourist' or to even express in any way I want attention. So to blend in has allot of benefits. Especially if you have to blend in out of safety in general. Say you are being followed. Regardless, criminals don't wait for disasters.
Having a good head lamp with you at all times is another huge benefit period. Hands free lighting. But also, in addition, a good high lumin flash light. They come very small now. Something high blast and with a stobe feature. Nightcore, Olite, many brands have rechagable, long time run and pocket sized lights that will blast 1000 lumins or more in someones face or possibly an animal. I have seen 900 lumin key chain size flashlights. So weight should never be an excuse. Costs hurt but they do for good bags, good shoes and all these high end clothes. Goid cameras which are not going to safe your life... When you blind an assailant it gives you such an advantage in time to get loose or get away. Of course there is so much more to carry, but what is legal where for international travel or even national travel now is a nightmare. A flashlight and headlamp is like basic insurance.
I got with the Nightcore NU25 with the shock cord band to save space, and my favorite flashlight is the tiny Olite HR2 front facing, 900 lumin, both usb rechargeable. I can fit both together in the palm of my hand basically. When it gets dusk I just put the headlamp around my neck and always sleep with it on camping and never know it's there it's so small. I have the newer model too, and it is a bit bigger, bigger battery and that really makes a difference. So I went back to using the older model. Plus my shock cord modification is much softer. The new one comes with it, and it's really hard and stiff. I should just change it our, huh...lol.
Next would be to always have a good whistle. Attach it to your EDC bag or every day carry. Pick a bright color so you can see it. Mine is Blaze orange and a theme for my signaling, rescue and even some tool like pocket knives or leatherman Juice, lighters incase they fall in the forrest I can see them easier.
I got as far as carrying a Blaze orange bandana for the purpose of signaling if I need to get rescued. I could tie this on a tall stick and make a flag. Where I live and play its a signal to hunters. And that is what I use in the meantime to freshen up, say wash my face, whatever, it's not waisted space. A bandana never is. I keep one in my day packs always. I keep a white cotten hankerchief for it's intended purpose but also to prefilter water. Prefilter water meaning using a straw or other devise. The hankerchief does NOT have toxic dyes or laundry detergants to further contaminate water. Plus it then can be used for medical.
And one big thing I never see travel people pack is a good water filter. I have a small filter straw in my EDC by Aquamira called the Frontier Pro, it's very small like a fat marker. This is so common sense, especially for the size and cheap price tag. It's my back up.
I use the Be Free by Katadyne as a primary, 2L, plus I pack one extra 2L bladder by Hydropak, the company that makes the stock bladders for Katadyne, and the model that pairs for the spare is the 'Seeker'.
Hydropak bottles can be frozen or hold boiling water. This makes them a medical item replacing ice packs and hot water bottles. They have attachment points so they can be used as a gravity feed system, so further like a wash up station to hang on a tree by using the sports cap or they even offer a spray type nozzle. This whole system with the extra 2L bladder bottle packs down so small and light you could store this in a jacket pocket. Some of the best 'insurance' just being able to filter and carry 4 L of water is pretty responsible (along with having light).
Another small item, tiny is a bit of trail marking tape. Especially for adventures in places where GPS is spotty or non existent. It is so small it's crazy not to have some in a kit. I wrap up a plastic store card in Gorilla tape for repairs and Leuko sports tape, this tape to cover hot spots that will form blisters. Leuko is also my medical tape for wounds or to cover bandaid to ensure they stay clean and dry. Like earplugs that do more then just keeping noise out, but bugs out of your ears if you have to sleep outdoors overnight stuck somewhere, multi purpose and really simple, light, small items are so key. Another use is if it's really cold, or super windy, earplugs protect your inner ears from especially wind which could literally cause vertigo or face paralysis. Next I don't care if it's 100 degrees I bring my buff. Again mine are earth tones and not Marino, more cotten, spandex I find wool too itchy in sticky heat. I wet mine down to keep cool. Can use as a cover for my head, keep my hair tamed, etc., etc.
And with any outdoorsy type stuff... hikes, camping, even in city parks, black is a hard color to wear 3 seasons, because bugs are hard to see. Especially ticks. So like my clothes in greens, so are all of my bags are all olive green now, because bags often land on the ground. Oh, and I have a teeny pair of OR super light weight gaiters, I would think maybe similar to Dirty Girl but without the wild patterns, so to protect my shoes and avoid the pesky pebble, but more so to see creepy crawlers traveling up from the ground.
One wind makes a super light ground sheet, something waterproof to sit on, great for the park or beach. This thing is so tiny, aa small as a packable grocery bag. That live in my EDC. It has gromets so I have used it as a sun shelter on a picnic just string it up with sime Kevlar which is a super strong tiny cord, almost embroidary thread size really. I also pack a rain poncho/tarp by this same brand. So between the two I have upper and ground shelter. Smaller then most rain jackets and covers my pack and some of my legs when on.
Another great find that has really been a game changer is similar to those Stasher bags you have for your food. I got zip lock silcone bags dirt cheep in snack, sandwhich, quart and gallon size. They come in sets of 4 each size. I use these for everything now, even for some clothes packing, especially for the beach, or gloves, hat, extra socks for hiking. They compress all the air out. Great to keep things dry, like tech, phone, camera, great on boats... in rain...and keep wet stuff from seeping all over. They hold food obviously and so liquids. They can be frozen or hold hot food, or be put in boiling water to make food like rice -rehydrate food. They are dish washer safe. I buy these sets for under 15 dollars. My first few were 10 dollars on Amazon, my last ones were 13$.
Great for medical kits as well. Shower kit, hold soap, I have one snack size for my tooth brush and paste. I have my liquids in a sandwhich size in the silocine bottles first.... I have one for reststop bathroom kit, with my hand sanitizer, etc.
The snack size is amazing for so many things.
Being Silcone, they slip in and out of packs well. The snack size fits perfect in my packable waistepack by 4Monster.
I buy the clear ones, they are kind of frosty, Chinese brands, there are several I look for the best price they are all the same... I got a tip in comments to only buy those with a rim, meaning not direct edge sealed like a 'Zip Lock' brand freezer or sandwhich bag and because the seams don't split like ziplocks or 'Locktight' bags very popular at one time, which 100 percent always did.
I have been using the same ones for over two years now and none have failed. No need to label because you can see through them. Another benefit. Being Silicone also it's easy to clean out sticky stuff like melted candy, gum, snacks.
Because they have aliitle girth to them or stability I just used one to soak my figer after a cut. Also I was thinking these could be a clean vessel to wash out an eye or irrigate a wound so just more medical uses besides keeping your items sealed and sterile, unlike like in other nylon bags and med kits.

Oh gosh we totally forgot them when we packed our bags! When we are on the move, both of our laptops go into Mico's day bag. We occasionally pack them in our check-in luggage for flights, but that's very rare as we like to keep them close so we never lose them!

So for big hikes like Patagonia and Everest Base Camp we brought specific hiking boots. After we were done the hikes we just sent them home via regular mail or with family/friends that we were with who were heading home. For everything else we just used sneakers or sandals (with proper foot support) and they have been great 😊 glad you enjoyed the video! Feel free to ask us anything else! 😀

Can you do a video on the different Merino travel brands. Travel clothing is very expensive but I haven’t found a video on the different merino travel brands like Smartwool, ice breaker, ExOfficio, UnBound Merino or any others you may know of.

I’m still watching this video so you might talk about it but I was curious what do yall do for fancier occasions like if you go out to dinner or some please where you need a fancier dress or outfit or maybe like close toed fancier shoes. What do you do then or do you just avoid those things?
Hey! We mostly don't have the occasion to dress up really fancy because we are on a tight budget, but the few times we have had to dress up a bit, Mico wears his white button up shirt and I wear my dress. And then we generally wear our sneakers, but I've also worn my Birkenstocks even though they're open toed! We got invited to a wedding super randomly in Turkey once and both wore our sneakers 😂
So jealous on the merino wool! I am soooo allergic to wool - so definitely OUT for me! Rash city! Other options?

I love this video, but I'm a shopper.. I love shopping while on my trips and seeing how tight everything fits I don't think I can do shopping sprees with this type of packing. 😂

I bought a fairview trek 50 for my first long solo trip to Asia, and I was hoping I might get away with not always checking it in, especially if I'll be able to start my trip not using all the space.. but the frame is quite tall, so we'll see. 😅

I find your video is very informative and helpful. I am so happy I watched your video. Anyway, I do have a couple of questions. Do you pack your portable charger for your laptop with your checked backpack or with your carry on? Is the its rated energy okay? I am not sure where keep my portable charger of 20,000mAh/1,000* 3.7V=74Wh? . Another question is that I have my electronic toothbrush (Aqua-sonic) which is 0.8-1.6w. Question about your plug adapter.
My husband and I are traveling to South Asia this year and were told by our friends there it would be best to buy a power converter with the plug adapters since a lot of those countries have higher amp plugs than we do in Canada and it could fry some things you plug in. Is this something you've ever encountered issues with?
That’s a great question! So between Nepal, India and Sri Lanka we spent about 9 months travelling there and this entire time we just traveled with our the universal adapter in our video. It worked great and we never had issues with power conversion. Most times electronics can handle different voltage standards that different countries have so it’s never an issue charging laptops, phones, cameras, etc. The only thing we had to worry about were hair straighteners because sometimes they were locked into using a specific voltage (like 110 volts we have in Canada) but for this Nicole had a travel specific straightener that can accommodate different voltages. Outside of this I think you’ll be perfectly fine with a good old plug adapter 😊

This is great! Can you speak sometime to using your backpacks for trekking? For example, on wilderness treks are you able to strap trekking poles and tents to the side of the bags?
We absolutely LOVE these backpacks for trekking. We have taken them on many multi day hikes in Patagonia and the Canadian Rockies and they perform amazing. Minimal, durable and has so many great features for hiking that we forget that it’s also ideal for traveling. We go into the backpack deeper during our Patagonia trekking prep video (I will link it below) but in a nutshell the backpack just has the right amount of packets, generous amount of straps, and really great yet not bulky suspension system. I honestly wouldn’t replace it with a trekking specific backpack even if I had the chance too. Here is the link to the video

Actually if you watch our Patagonia trekking video and not just the prep video then you can really see it in action. We attach poles, tents, jackets and anything else we need to it during the video. Only think I would say is that if you want this for trekking/hiking only and not really for travelling, then I would invest in a separate, lightweight rain cover. The cover it comes with is more heavy duty because it acts as a full wrap for when you check in the bag at airports so it’s a little overkill for the trail. In that case, we can highly recommend this backpack! Honestly, it’s been so perfect for our travel and outdoor lifestyle. We’re so impressed with how it’s held up. Both our bags look almost brand new (except some ripped mesh on one of Mico’s side pockets) and somehow the zippers are still in perfect condition even though I (Nicole) have pushed them past where they should probably be pushed 😂

So glad you're finding the video(s) helpful! We don't use any money belts or security bags under our clothes. I (Nicole) did that for a few months when I took my first "big" trips as an adult, and quickly found that they brought more attention instead of less. I often got the feeling that pulling money out of the belt to pay for things made it look like I was carrying enough money to be worth hiding. Our strategy instead has been to blend in as best as possible, and never carry more money/cards than necessary whenever we leave our accommodation. Maybe you've already seen it, but in case you haven't come across it yet, we recently made a whole video on how we deal with money while traveling. I've really been enjoying all of your videos and tips and this one is no different! My husband and I are also full-time travelers, and I have two dorky packing questions for you. I want to not pack my hiking boots and just use my walking shoes for our day hikes, but I hate having my walking shoes dirty for wandering around town the rest of the time. Do you just not let it bother you, or wash your shoes after every hike & replace them more often, or ?? 2nd question - I also struggle with not packing slippers or cushy flip-flops to wear in the house, because my feet hurt on hard floors (or freeze, depending on where we are). So glad you enjoy our videos! We’re so happy it’s providing some nice tips for your trip. Regarding shoes we also opted to leave our hiking boots behind. All the hiking we’ve done in Central America thus far have been doable with just good walking shoes with some traction. We both have Vessis and love them for their easy to wash material so that’s helped to keep them clean. Nicole has white ones which is harder to keep clean and I (Mico) just go around with black ones and wash them every so often. Not too bad at all 😊 in terms of home shoes we just carry around a pair of flip flops for the house and showers. It’s mostly for showers because we hate going barefoot in them! You can also use a slip on sandal with socks if that would help to save space. Our flip flops for the house though has gotten us through many places without issues and it feels a little cleaner no matter where we stay. We hope this answers your questions! Aiming for a 30l backpack and a daypack personal item both weightless unpacked as dont want to ever lose a bag again! Mybiggest issue is I need to take meds and cold warm clothing as feel cold as asthmatic. Last time had to buy then leave thicker clothing behind.. I ll have to take anything I own as wont hsve anywhere to store it. Baselayer thermal are great..❤any hint ee a mosquito spray that works have tried deet and anything nothing worked at all. Do you think solo could manage on 850 gbp a month if stay in hostel dorms?
Base layers are awesome! And we truly feel like they’re a great option for those who run cold but don’t want to take a lot of bulky clothing. We normally just use any old bug spray we find at the store. Sometimes deet and sometimes the citronella kind. In regards to your budget it sounds pretty good but it will really depend on where you’re travelling to. What countries do you hope to visit on your trip? For example if you’re sticking to south east Asia then this budget might be doable. Your biggest expense (outside of flights) will be your accommodation so we suggest looking at those closely! Safe travels!

Thank you so much! 😊 we don’t have any special pillows except for Nicole’s blow up travel pillow which she swears by 😄 and for computers we normally keep one in our carry on bag and the other in check in. If we don’t need to do any work we will just put it all in check in. Sometimes we’ve flown with airlines who don’t like having computers in the check in bags so we’ve had to take them out but those are rare.

I was listening to a young woman in a shoeshine here in South Africa - she was complaining about having to buy new boots because while she was in England she left her boots out side the backdoor of a house. Is it just me, or are airline bag dimensions getting smaller and smaller while bag fees get bigger and bigger?
Probably not all the electronics and the extra things that help facilitate our travel AND working lifestyle. When we first left for full time travel, we spent the first 10 months with the Kathmandu 38L Litehaul and it was perfect. We outgrew it because of our extra UA-cam gear but you can definitely travel out of a small backpack. I think in general a fully loaded 40 L backpack is the max you can fit for carry on. This could be reduced if you’re flying on smaller planes though
I’m curious about, your day packs. How do you secure them walking around do you aren’t pick pocketed? Nicole I really like yours but I’m always worried about someone getting into it walking around a place like Rome
Great question! We do a couple things to mitigate the risk of someone nabbing stuff from our bags. Mico often puts a carabiner on the zippers of his bag to attach them together. It's a small thing and someone could still get into it if they really tried, but it's enough of a deterrent to keep people away (at least we think so given that we've never been robbed!). Something else we do a lot (specifically me) is to hold my bag on my front instead of my back. I do this anytime we're in a crowd of people and someone could potentially unzip my bag without me knowing. I do it in markets and public transit tons and it really helps! A good rule is we follow is that if you see locals wearing their bags on their front, we definitely will too. But we do it all the time just to be safe because we realize we are big targets as people who stick out. Of course you could always get a lock for your bag, but in all our travels we've never felt it necessary to go that far. I hope that helps!

Not in south east Asia but in similar hot and very humid weather and it's been fine. The quick drying really helps haha
Witch towels are you take with you?
We use the “Packtowl” towels and love them! Very light and don’t take up a lot of space but also doesn’t feel like weird microfibre towels. A nice in between.

Hey there! I bought my white shirt in Colombia and it does wrinkle so much! What I do to help with the wrinkles is carry a tiny spray bottle around with me and I just fill that with water and spray the shirt down when I want to wear it (the night before if I remember, but right before I put it on is fine too). That gets rid of the wrinkles really well! I found a shirt very similar to mine on Amazon that you could check out to get a closer look. I really like the 3/4 length sleeves on this one and it doesn't have a breast pocket which is my preference (otherwise it looks a bit too casual for my liking) amzn.to/3HtO0SB

I have been really loving merino wool socks in the past 1.5 year and think they are a gamechanger, and also wear merino wool in the winter. I'll definitely need to check Wool& out! I'm still looking for female merino wool tshirts that don't seem too fragile (I have Unbound Merino tshirts and dress but they feel too fragile. I too prefer a blend)

We’ve had lots of comments in our previous videos saying that the Darn Tough socks are really good, so we hope to try those at some point. If you’re looking for a durable dress and are checking out wool&, I am really loving the Sierra. I also have the Maggie and really like it, but the Sierra is a thicker fabric that I have found to be really durable! So far it’s my favourite 😁

Yes we do and we use it all the time. Especially when we’re using credit cards or checking bank stuff online. We use Surfshark and we have been for years. Works quickly and with little fuss. Could you get away with it as carry on?
Yes you can assuming you don’t have a ton of the electronics and some extra clothing. For the first 10 months of our travel we had only a 38L pack each and flew carry on. A lot of the stuff we have in this video hasn’t really changed but back then we had a few less shirts and a lot less UA-cam gear. Very doable though!
