Fun fact:
In the pre-glove days of boxing, trying to punch opponents in the skull was an easy way to injure your knuckles. Likewise, blocking with bare wrists/hands wasn't very effective, meaning the entire sport boiled down to avoiding or redirecting body blows. This is why boxers prioritized an under-handed "Irish fighting stance" where they'd lean their torsos back and stick their arms out.
Boxing is thus one of the few sports where its participants became MORE likely to experience long-term damage after protective gear was introduced, because gloves allowed combatants to start striking their opponents' heads with full force (and added weight).
Gloves were introduced to protect the knuckles.
