- The Real Real - Where Do I Start?! My Personal Experience & Issues with TRR & Tips to Consigning with Channeling Luxury with ~~Dani B
All views are only my own from my own experience.
Where do I even begin. The Real Real has a place in our market and provides opportunities for us to buy pieces at a discount, and consign pieces that we aren't wearing. But, they aren't without their issues. From losing pieces to incorrectly pricing garments, or not even knowing what something is.. Here is my experience so far, some actual examples and my thoughts on how you can stay on top of what you consign to help keep mistakes from impacting your bottom line.

Awesome video and advice. Thanks for sharing this. I live in NY and have consigned with them for many years as we and I have also had several similar experiences. Most often I have to deal with the low pricing and extended periods to list items as well. I did not realize that I could get pricing before the items list for things other than handbags. Certainly a great tip for the future. Also huge shout-out to you being a professor! So cool! I’m an Adjunct myself who teach evenings afterwork at my full-time job. Great to know there someone else in the profession who appreciates lux!
That’s so cool! I appreciate you sharing! It’s definitely not very common in our industry to have other luxe lovers! Lol
The situation with the real real is just awful. Today I got a notice that they’re shipping stuff back to me that is several months old, so it was probably lost, returned to someone else, and then shipped back out to me just like I’ve done for others. I don’t even know what they are going to do to fix their logistics issues. 🤯
I have had both good and bad experiences with them, mostly ok so far. Yes, they have mis-priced my items, for example, a crystal embellished Balmain jacket listed (and immediately sold) for $200, but they agreed that it should have been listed at $1980. They did eventually refund me back whatever my commission would have been. So yes they have issues with their pricing, and losing items. I wish they would let us approve the listings before they go live. We could go over "our" listings and either instantly approve or point whatever problems they may have in the title/description/price. That said, their services are invaluable to those of us who for whatever reason can't sell these expensive items on our own.
I think that would be a great idea. We need to be able to edit them and review them way before. I am still battling them on a top that should be a dress, and they updated the description but not the photo! And it’s been months and months. You really have to stay on top of it with them. They offer such a great service that it’s too bad.
That’s a great idea approving listings above a certain amount should be available. I’ve been waiting for 3 months for my September items to be listed. Super frustrating.
When I sold LV items through TRR and I remember I had to approve the listing before it went up.
I have to agree with you, as a consignor you should be concerned about doing right by your client.
100%. Their responsibility is to their clients who are giving them very expensive things and trusting them.
I recently had ny first Zoom ever to sell with them and wanted to research them more before shipping off a box of items. I am beyond appreciative to you for making this video! All of what you explain is what I kind of suspected would be the case. I'd be better off doing most anything else! Love listening to you! Subscribed! 🧡
Thank you so much for your kindness! I sold some things to them recently on consignment and they’ve lost three Chanel pieces! It’s unbelievable. I wish I had another source to sell to for ready to wear!
I am lucky with TRR - I have had excellent service, I do alot of consigning and have been very satisfied. TRR is the only platform I use.
That’s awesome to hear :) Super glad
I've only used them to purchase from as I am in the UK, and will not be using them again! I have made one purchase which was a Chanel cardigan from last falls collection. The description was pristine with tags. When it arrived (very badly packed/squashed) it was clear that it had been worn a lot! All the button holes were damaged and one ripped so that it would not close, and a crystal button had stones missing. I raised my concerns and they paid for the shipping back which was a relief as it was around £250 and I received a refund. But my first bugbear is that I had to pay the import and customs tax to the delivery company and I can't seem to get a refund for that! My second bugbear is that it is listed again with exactly the same description - not fair on any future purchaser ☹
Ugh they didn’t learn from the mistake or really care. It seems they are just looking for that client that doesn’t pay attention . I have no doubt I’ve been jacked out of thousands of dollars but I can’t prove it because early on I wasn’t tracking. :( I also had a bad buying experience as well :(
I forgot to say that I have used Bagista (not sure if they are just UK) who I thought were very good and I also used Vestiaire collective concierge service which was expensive but good - everything they listed for me sold in two weeks and I thought their photos and descriptions were very good. I had a contact person and she was very helpful and super efficient 😄
I have had the same experiences with TRR. They lost a box of Louboutin boots and shoes and never found it. The ended up paying for what was listed in the box, but I'm sure not what should have been paid. If we did not keep track of what we had sent we would have never known.
Ridiculous - what if you had given them a lot of things and didn’t recall all that was in the box? So bad.
Thank you very much for very helpful information. Thank God I didn't consigned with them. I was thinking about it but now definitely won't do it.
Glad it was helpful!
I agree that they are crazy. I sent a Moscino McDonald's jacket and they sold my jacket for $115 . My jacket was sold for such a ridiculous price. It was sold as soon as it was uploaded, so I didn't even have time to ask for a return. The same McDonald's skirt sold for $80. Another Moscino skirt sold for $80, so I had a total of my money $45. What the hell is their price standard?
It's already sold before I say I don't like the price. Because they uploaded it at a ridiculously low price .
Yeah, they do that a lot. If something sells in a couple of minutes then we know it’s way underpriced. First of all I don’t think they know the real value, and second of all I don’t think they know any special items, and third I don’t even think they know the designers. All my opinion only based on my experience with them. We need to have the ability to control the price and say yes, or no before they list anything whatsoever.
@Luxury Designers with ~~DaniB
I totally agree with you.
They need to change the system.
Hi Dani,
I know that The Real Real has a huge reach but is there another company (you would recommend) we should work with that can sell designer Ready to Wear clothing?
Thank you for always sharing your real life stories with us. It has been such a huge help for me when it comes to shopping on the high end.
Sadly, no… Which is why I still begrudgingly use them. I really wish there was another one that resold ready to wear, but other than selling it on your own with limited visibility, there’s not. :((( Big open spot in the market
@@LuxuryDesigners That is so heartbreaking but your tips will help save a lot us from even more confusion! Thanks again Dani. I wish there was another source like FashionPhile for RTW.
I used to sell on Poshmark but they take 30% of each sale which is quite a bit. And then when the California law passed in January 2020 that their sales are no longer tax free it slowed down my sales by about 40%.. I stopped selling a year later.
Ugh yeah no way!!
I just checked and your silk blouse is listed at 25% off! 🤯I'd buy it if it were a bigger size.
Sucks! I asked for several things back. It’s ridiculous… They would have a lot more sales if they listed things properly. Even eBay requires more from us.
Oh wow, I’ve only sold one time on TRR, but they had a storefront in Atlanta (now closed), so it was as evaluated right in front of me. I’ve been more concern about their authentication process. 😅
I hear you - I am too and won’t buy from them anymore :(
Great video 🙌🏻🫶
Thanks :)
You’ve given every reason to stop using them!
Yes indeed !! I wish others would sell RTW!!
I think you should've mentioned your good experiences with them as well. I know they make mistakes (as any other re-seller) , but in most times they get it right in my point of view.
Hi Az.. I think I did that by saying that they serve a very niche part of the market and that they are able to sell things that are too time-consuming and we don’t have enough of a reach ourselves to sell, and the convenience of the home concierge. I think they have an important part in the market place, but they need to get their act together. You will see so many other people in the comments here having the same issues. :( I WANT them to succeed. But I also want to warn folks about how to protect themselves…
I’ve only consigned with TRR in less than a month and it has been a terrible experience. They do not know how to price and you don’t make a good commission on your items. Sent in ten items and sold five within a week or two. Three out of the five were sold deeply discounted/with coupon codes, which also affects your commission. For this very reason I’ve requested to have my other remaining items sent back. I feel like I am losing money using their services and I won’t tolerate their business model any longer.
Pricing is HORRIBLE - you have to watch them like crazy :( They list womens as mens, put dresses with skirts in photos, and get pricing approval before you have anything sent. SMH
At 24:33 That THEORY sweater retails for $400.. and they sold it for $13? Yikes. 😮
Tell me about it :(
The Real Real KNOWS what they are doing…. They only want their CUT !
I consigned several items that were sold for thousands less or loss during transaction.
Only consign items no one will accept.
I personally have purchased items from them I couldn’t get ANYWHERE else for that LOW price!
Agree with you 100%.. it’s not like they don’t know these problems exist, but I don’t see any solutions for them.
They screwed me over too it's a racket
That sucks Carole I am sorry!!
That’s awful!!! Also it sounds stressful. I couldn’t. Hope you can find a better way to sell.
You and me both! Sigh
sounds like a scam, they list lower prices snatch the item and resell it for the real price
I can’t stand this company anymore. They’ve ruined items before returning to me and lost an order and refused to admit it - had to get the credit card company involved. Even though after I bought it I was able to “buy it again” from their site and have it sent the second time! It’s a shame.
It seems as though they screwed you over so many times that I wonder why you kept going back?
I don’t have another place to sell ready to wear. I tried Ebay and a year or more for one piece.
