  • The story
    Almost 1 million. That's how many Twitter accounts have been deactivated since Elon Musk bought the social media platform last month.
    Musk's takeover has been controversial.
    Some people are worried about his approach to free speech, thousands of staff have lost their jobs and there are plans to make some users pay a subscription.
    Many users are moving to an alternative called Mastodon, a free social network platform, where posts are called 'toots'.
    Eugen Rochko, the founder of the platform, tooted on Monday that the massive increase is "pretty cool".

    Dear BBC, I'd like to point out one problem you have in your videos, it is that when you see the summary at the end of the video the episode's words are at the left down corner and the exact place you put a thumbnail of some other video so you don't see the summary and can't screenshot it 😅

    This morning is so cool that my lecturer must flock all of the student to learn in another day. This makes us struggle with mammoth things due to the mid-term test is coming soon.
    However, thanks to BBC learning English is on fire. So this problem is dealed with smoothly.

    I never understood why he paid so much for Twitter. In 10 years at the latest, Twitter, Facebook and Co. will only be small lights. The younger generation has long since moved on. These are platforms for old people like me (50). They play there for a few years, then it gets boring. And since we already own almost everything, advertising is hardly effective (except for cars and real estate - but you don't buy many of those)

    deactivate (v); deactivation (n)
    takeover (n) - replacement, get control of something
    Controversial (adj) - causing disagreement or discussion
    Subscription (n) the act of subscribing; Subscribe (v) - pay for the issues of something like a magazine/ youtube channel
    1) Flock (v) to move together in a large group - meaning about the movement following each other. Flock (n) a group of birds or sheep. Exp: People flocked to the website to watch the video.
    2) On fire - impressive because something is doing very well. Informal way to say something that we are impressed with. Exp: Your social media post is on fire. It's got almost 1 million views.
    3) Mammoth (adj) related to something very big. Mammoth (n) a hairy big elephant that was extinct. Exp: I have a mammoth job at the weekend when we need to clean our house.
