I was a crew chief on Chinooks for 6 years (OIF). The information you provided here sounds like it comes from directly from army aviation manuals and the pearls of wisdom that old crusty CW4s give to the new pilots during the countless training flight needed before combat operations. Great job, enjoyed it a bunch.
What you say after 3:50 literally describes the golden rule of aviation. Generally goes on like this "A pilot uses his superior judgement so he does not have to use his superior skill"
I love to hear how much of the real world piloting mindset and procedure end up being expressed in these videos. A real testament to the authenticity of the environment BE have created.
This series, and this video in particular, is the Bible. All my pilots have to go through these videos. Thanks for your contributions to this game, Dslyecxi!
Something I learned well being a pilot in Arma 3, is have confidence in your flying on all levels. Since when you start questioning how your flying, you start to making mistakes.
I've now watched the entire Art of Flight and tried a few practice runs in the MH8-Hummingbird. It went horrible, but I had my first landing without auto-hovor. And considering I got over 200 hours of flight in DayZ, I'm both alittle embarrassed and also proud. Ambivilance at it's best. Time for more of your videos and also some more practice. It's now 23:05, it's getting dangerously close to what should be my bedtime. But you are just too good to stop watching man! Keep up the good work, and hopefully soon more of this Art of Flight!
Your guides are not only comprehensive and easy to understand, but also spectacularly cinematic. I could watch this all day. Matter of fact, I might go flail around in a helicopter in A3 right now...
Having been only a passenger grunt in my past life, it is really interesting to hear the complex factors that pilots must consider. Another fantastic job, Dslyecxi.
I think it would be pretty cool to see a scenario with randomly generated enemy forces around the island, which both include small arm forces and large AA units. This would be good to allow people to practice piloting and many aspects of it. The scenario could also include tasks such as troop transport or cargo transport to give the player something to try and allowing the player to pilot differently depending on the situation of the tasks.
Wish I could send more your way - if I win the lottery, I will. Your videos (and those of the other ST members) have been a fantastic inspiration to me and have kept me going on rough days for a few years now, as has the thought of applying myself once I get the time to play more regularly. Thanks so much.
Ahh.. the dream to find a descent community. Too bad I don't have enough knowledge to actually start one myself. Great video as always though. Oh! Also, hope to see more of your RL flight vids. Have you decided to keep 'em coming? Or is that a spoiler request? :p
It's more than time and money and technical know-how. Watch Dslyecxi's video where he answers personal questions and talks about the immense work and heartburn it takes to run such an organization. Since actually getting into ShackTac is like making it into a pro sports team, I was thinking of starting a group myself. I'll soon have the time and money, but I'm a techno-moron, so I thought of recruiting someone in the know. When I watched Dslyecxi's video, I realized that I hadn't even considered the pain of dealing with the actual running of such an enterprise. It makes his success all the more impressive.
Qarlo99 Yes. Well.. A community such as ST is just a dream, and will always be just that. So I would never even aim for something like that. Low ambitions perhaps... ;)
Neeken You just need to be willing stick with it for the long haul and push through and ensuing everybody has a great time at even the cost of your own. There will be really bad periods where sessions are not fun and overall morale is low but as long as members are understanding and have the willpower to stick with it and believe it will get better will help with the overall mentality of it all and push out of said bad period. You have to also be careful about how you do it, you might try to make it like another group and then fixating upon becoming it too much and neglecting many issues just to attempt to be something the group is not. It also comes down to the people apart of your group, you could have a 100 players in your group but 95 of them could just be there (or not) to play rather than getting involved with the group properly. It also doesn't really take knowledge to start and run a community, just the willpower to keep it running through thick and thin. Besides, best things start off small and then grow!, High ambitions are great to work toward but not necessarily feasible straight away. Aiming to also make it something to be proud of is a great thing to also work toward as it doesn't matter what other groups do (Although prompting the location) many groups will aim to be like the 15th Meu or Shack Tactical but that is someone else's work, creating something of your own adds so much more to help get that personal enthusiasm going.
Dslyecxi, Watching your tutorials in Art of Flight have made me a better in arma flight. Ive never made this much progress till I found you. THANK YOU!
Hey Dslyecxi, have you also noticed that the helo DLC also turned tail rotors deadly? Contacting those and the rotor is actually a threat now as far as I tested, so maybe a video for how you're supposed to behave as an infantryman embarking and disembarking helicopters could be worth the effort too? Really love watching these in place of playing, since my rig with the 8 year old mobo and processor is dismally inadequate by now, all thumbs up!
As usual, a well researched, formatted, presented, and narrated episode. I love the helo DLC and really enjoy watching how Dslyecxi approaches his mission planning and execution. A very enjoyable view while sipping a cup of coffee...
*After playing this game for about 4 months ..* I decided to buy *bf4* after i heard that they fixed a lot of the problems I completed the camping on *HARD* and it was easy for me :) .. i couldn't complete it on *bf3* ( on consoles ) 2 years ago .. This game is the best .. ***** Thank's for the videos man
This dslyecxi is a good video, really helped overall with my flight abilities.I mean I'm still really bad at landings or the final approach(i always slam into some kind of object),so I don't think I'm ganna to be a pilot in arma, know your limits i suppose. But this is great, keep up the nice tutorials.
Great video, i wish some pilots actually watch this. To many times someone fly's over my chopper or my door gunners engage enemy's without my permission.
To back up ThatGuy, I was also in Army Aviation as Aircrew on Blackhawks for half a decade and your spot on with your understanding of the procedures and even the things that only come with experience, well done.
Good stuff. I liked the visuals too, particularly the scene showing the Tura Opfor helicopter with the jets strafing. Off-topic, do any shackers play elite dangerous?
I'm interested in a video where you talk about trim, manual trim, -release, auto-trim and torque while focusing on mouse/keyboard vs. ideal controls. (I like to keep things as complex and thus interesting as I can, but disabling auto-trim makes the heli act unstable. Thus attempting to stabilize with manual trim, it seems like speed change or collective change require you to re-ajust manual trim.) If you have experience with it I'd appreciate if you share it somewhere in another video. Great video as always :)
epic video ! in depth and attentive to detail. would love to know the ins and outs of builfing your own custom game, MOGADISHU scenario with 4 ranger chalks and some delta force would be epic !! also a we were soldiers reinactment
Hey dslecxi, I was wondering how you filmed most of the flying the footage, and specially the contour flight scene from 2:05. Did you have some friends flying while you were in camera mode, or was it part of a mission you conducted with shacktac? Keep up the good stuff, love the video
I really liked the in person waypoints that you edited in the video. Any chance we could see something like that in your regularly scheduled programming?
I just started playing multiplayer on an antistasi server and the most common heli u have access to is the mi8. I can take off and fly but I struggle landing
Trying to get our group a good size as i teach the pilots these are required watching as I have learnt so much from them would love to get some 1 to 1 with the big man one day
Carl Johnson For normal A3 or A2, yes. In the event that I'm flying the advanced flight model (which we do not and will not use for our sessions), I use my DCS stick/throttle/pedals setup instead.
***** What are the reasons you do not and will not be using AFM for your sessions? Will this be an absolute statement forever? By the way, great video.
Zachary Southard Not to put words in his mouth but it may be (as he stated) that he chooses to use M&K for ST session (for practical reasons) and AFM is not really designed for that. There's also an off chance that he avoids the AFM for fear that it might cramp his aeronautic badassery. ;)
UH-60L pilot here that is just starting to get into gaming (getting a VR setup since it will simulate actual movement in the aircraft). Watched your video to see if there were any "simulator-isms" that made flying in Arma super unique. I am quite impressed with how similar the physics are compared to actual flight. Great job on the instructions. Felt like I was going through basic warfighter functions again at Fort Rucker! Everything you said was pretty spot on to how we fly...depending on your unit. Are you a pilot by chance?
+JimLitzFilms - I am not a pilot, just an enthusiast. I have a bit of flight time in an R-44 (I have some videos of that in my channel as well, playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLQEd6zRLOafVTY2qAwcdObbhMKq5CZZzC.html ), around 18 hours IIRC. Glad you enjoyed it! Keep in mind that my Arma videos are about the normal flight model, so there are things in the advanced flight model that will understandably work differently. I did a different video that's more about various IRL considerations, for the DCS Huey - that one's here: ua-cam.com/video/hZYMkG63cJU/v-deo.html
+Dslyecxi awesome videos. Once I get my system built and learn the flight characteristics of ARMA (which shouldn't be to hard because in the army we use a version of ARMA called VBS2 for some simulation training already) is there a team you recommend joining as a pilot?
JimLitzFilms - Not particularly - most groups will want people to be able to play a broad range of roles. There may be some very milsim groups that have dedicated pilot slots, but those can be a bit (very) strange if you've actually served.
Are these clips done with the new flight model or are they mixed? Now I just have to learn how to fly in the new one. Would be nice to see an in depth guide on it. Great video as always!
Nice vid mate. What script was used for the passengers to open the doors themselves? Also would you consider doing a tutorial as long as this on the AH -99 please? Basically how to use it to its full potential in game (tactics against ai) thanks
Hello Dslyecxi! Could you make an informative video to share with us what are your Track IR settings and also your key bindings when flying. Greatly appreciate it.
Eduardo França Porto There's no specific order to things, I just do whatever I feel interested in at the times. There are several infantry guides I have partial scripts to, so it's not unlikely that you'll see one soon.
Sick video Dslyecxi. High quality content as usual. I'm interested though to hear your thoughts on A2's MH-6 vs. A3's MH-9. Do you like the MH-9 as much as the MH-6? I personally am having difficulty enjoying the MH-9 as much as the MH-6, its higher speeds and extra 2 seats almost make it seem too good... although it lacks flares. Small transport heli's are by far my favorite to fly.
Man, I wish I could find a community that needed a pilot and plays like ShacTac does. I've done loads of practice and played a bunch of public multiplayer servers but they don't respect/use transport pilots that much
My luck with ARMA 3 piloting Spend roughly 200 hours learning and mastering flying helicopter Get to the group of people who needed a pilot Become the first pilot in the group Fly some boring safe transportation mission no combat flying Finally the group requires air support me and my apprentice board on attack helicopter [tears of joy] Get to the place, get randomly shot down by infantryman bullet, lose the only attack helicopter given in the mission in less than 20 seconds "Maybe you are not ready for attack missions"
Forgot to mention that you should always make sure you remember to put your gear down before landing. A3 helicopters don't like to belly rub the ground much. So many flames...
Your guides are great by the way! I have an issue though more personal than with the game , i can do most of these maneuvers and techniques alright when playing SP or with friends but when i play with other members in public servers i become massively flustered and find it hard to concentrate (often ending up in mistakes which then make it even harder to recover) do you have any ideas on how to deal with this ? But still i love your videos and wish you all the best.
Brother that's all about experience. Fly a lot a lot a lot a lot. Eventually the experience will calm your nerves. There's nothing more high stakes than carrying souls into a fight, and being responsible for every one of them. It's the greatest challenge in the game!
Landing a helicopter is one of the most difficult things to helicopter flight to me. Most likely cause I'm big on fix wing flight sims. Hovering/landing like how helicopters do just feels unnatural to me, and it's really disheartening landing anything that isn't the little bird due to the lack of visibility you get. But that's what's making it fun.
hey Dslyecxi, As always nice video, but can you tell me what are you using to get these beautiful ingame shots? Default ingame camera, some cinematic camera mod?
What if you were presented in a situation where, as you began unloading in an LZ you suddenly had to evacuate pronto and still having troops on-board? Would you just exit the LZ and do a go around and land again or wait until the LZ is cleared (if possible).
Virtual Warfighter Khaos It's such a scenario-specific thing. There are a lot of things that can go wrong if you try to abort an offload like that - it's most likely better to just eat whatever's coming at you and allow the troops to get on the ground. Taking off mid-offload will almost certainly mean that someone will jump to their death by accident due to not hearing you in the chaos, and in the best case scenario, you'll have stranded a partial element in a hot situation.
***** Also if you are taking fire whilst unloading you most likely wont have time to get away, and you will just get shredded up 20 meters above the ground and blow up killing everyone around. Assuming its heavy fire that is.
I've been flying with the advanced flight model with a stick. I've flown the littlebird a lot and it has been alright, but whenever I fly larger helicopters like the transport ones, they don't feel more clumsier like what I'd expect but instead they're much more responsive and sensitive. Is this is a bug or is there a reasonable explanation for this? It feels as if every time I'm going to fly a large helicopter I should tone down the sensitivities to make it easier. Do they just have so much more powerful engines?
"It's not about impressing your passengers." You know what impresses me? Making it to the LZ with everyone alive more often than 40% of the time lmao.
And this is why you fly with me. 🤝🏼🥱

+ThatGuy - Thanks, I appreciate the kind words!
+ThatGuy thats arma ;)
Looking at your comment, I thought you meant in Arma. I was like "that must have been boring."
What you say after 3:50 literally describes the golden rule of aviation.
Generally goes on like this "A pilot uses his superior judgement so he does not have to use his superior skill"
The depressed movement of the player head on the failed landing was golden. Nice vid man!
hahaha the pilot looking down in shame.... priceless. outstanding video. Thanks.
I was cracking up at that too!
I love to hear how much of the real world piloting mindset and procedure end up being expressed in these videos. A real testament to the authenticity of the environment BE have created.
While they may be old these videos are still golden

Your guides are not only comprehensive and easy to understand, but also spectacularly cinematic. I could watch this all day. Matter of fact, I might go flail around in a helicopter in A3 right now...
I'm always surprised to see any down votes given the amount of sheer work and knowledge you put in to each video. Great video man, keep it up.
This video, AKA The Bible. All my new pilots have to watch your AOF series, especially this one. Absolutely invaluable.
so awesome! Love your visualization of things like the markers at 13:30, keep it up!! :)
Having been only a passenger grunt in my past life, it is really interesting to hear the complex factors that pilots must consider. Another fantastic job, Dslyecxi.
I love the "hangs head in shame" moves after each crash! :)
TobyTheBlackDog do you know what mode he is playing in the video?
I think it would be pretty cool to see a scenario with randomly generated enemy forces around the island, which both include small arm forces and large AA units. +gamaz cast like those "support xyz" missions in the vanilla game? dont know if they have AA thou... they killed me a few times ;)
1 thing i didn't like about this video was that it made me think i could be a good pilot and launch up arma 3 and then realize im a shit pilot :D
same here😂
Use a controller 😬
You can increase your skill immediately just by trying to immitate the other pilots.
@@a10goesbrrrrrrrrrrt52 you misspelled flying backwards blaring fortunate son

Please more Art of Flight videos ***** !! Your time and meticulousness is so much appreciated!!
I'm currently deployed and I've been looking for a hobby once I return. thanks to you I've found it. great job.
+Kevin Faison Find yourself a realism unit! You will find some fantastic communities in Arma :)
GREAT CHOICE! THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE! 😁
Kevin Faison
How's ArmA?
Kevin Faison thank you for your service my dads getting deployed again in 2020 to Kuwait I hope you came home safe and sound ❤️
I love how you look down in shame during the bad landing section.
I know Dslyecxi prefers the Little Birds, but those Ghosthawks look awesome. In fact, most of the Arma 3 helicopter models look pretty slick.
Ahh.. the dream to find a descent community. Too bad I don't have enough knowledge to actually start one myself.
Great video as always though.
Oh! Also, hope to see more of your RL flight vids. Have you decided to keep 'em coming? Or is that a spoiler request? :p
Joe Klein You thinkin' about servers there?

These videos get me so pumped to jump on Arma and just fly around in a Black Hawk or a Little Bird.
Dslyecxi, Watching your tutorials in Art of Flight have made me a better in arma flight. Ive never made this much progress till I found you. THANK YOU!
I was a army helicopter pilot and also a ground pounder and this is a very good tutorial.
Great job! You sound like actual instructor!
+Shaftoe maybe he is an actual instructor
No idea why there are 16 no likes... this video holds nothing but great advice. Another fantastic video from a pro!
I'm just into Arma and so pumped by its game complexity and player dedication. Your vids are stunning. WD
Haha, that head slump after a botched landing is great
genuinely great tutorial with amazing visuals, thank you so much
Hey Dslyecxi, have you also noticed that the helo DLC also turned tail rotors deadly? Contacting those and the rotor is actually a threat now as far as I tested, so maybe a video for how you're supposed to behave as an infantryman embarking and disembarking helicopters could be worth the effort too?
Really love watching these in place of playing, since my rig with the 8 year old mobo and processor is dismally inadequate by now, all thumbs up!

Well done I enjoyed and also the video was not boring it had some light show in it :) :) GJ
It's always a pleasure to watch such detailed and good tutorial videos. Awesome stuff :D
How do you make the visual map markers that are in. The 13:00-14:00 range? I would LOVE this for flying!

love the ashamed dropping of the head :D

this is going to be really usefull in king of the hill. you can also get a good training in koth because you need to do it alot like every 5 minutes
Love your videos man, they have helped me allot with piloting
Haha, I love the depiction of the shame your character felt from all those crashes. At least that's what it seemed like you were doing.
I've realized that just getting people onto the ground alive will impress them if your new :D (I've only been playing for about a week and a half)
as always a great video! nice work

+Dslyecxi Your flying was smooth i would like to knowif you use a joystick or mouse and keyboard to fly.
JSweetshare - Mouse, keyboard, rudder pedals, TrackIR.
Jesus dude your good. btw i subscribed
+Dslyecxi That's really impressive given the control you show in air. Have you tried using a flight stick? If so, what didn't you like about it?

Still waiting for an accurate reply lol
As you are still waiting on an accurate response it's the Zeus camera
Tanks again Dslyecxi!
Is there a mod that can display in real-time flight the map markers like in 13:56?
I love u man keep it upppp
I know this is a really subtle thing, but it seems like this episode had really good sounds. Were they all in game or did you do some sound mixing?
Thank you for this.
Thanks mate for the help.
Are these clips done with the new flight model or are they mixed?
Now I just have to learn how to fly in the new one. Would be nice to see an in depth guide on it.

I used to fuck around with contour and NOE flying in Arma 2 xD

Sick video Dslyecxi. High quality content as usual. I'm interested though to hear your thoughts on A2's MH-6 vs. A3's MH-9. Do you like the MH-9 as much as the MH-6? I personally am having difficulty enjoying the MH-9 as much as the MH-6, its higher speeds and extra 2 seats almost make it seem too good... although it lacks flares. Small transport heli's are by far my favorite to fly.
Man, I wish I could find a community that needed a pilot and plays like ShacTac does. I've done loads of practice and played a bunch of public multiplayer servers but they don't respect/use transport pilots that much
My luck with ARMA 3 piloting
Spend roughly 200 hours learning and mastering flying helicopter
Get to the group of people who needed a pilot
Become the first pilot in the group
Fly some boring safe transportation mission no combat flying
Finally the group requires air support me and my apprentice board on attack helicopter [tears of joy]
Get to the place, get randomly shot down by infantryman bullet, lose the only attack helicopter given in the mission in less than 20 seconds
"Maybe you are not ready for attack missions"
Very well said
subscribed and like great job man
Great thanks for the tips
+Dslyecxi Please tell me that is a mod @ 13:30 and not video editing. What is the name of it?
Do you think you'll get more into arma's AFM in future art of flight episodes?
Dslyecxi, any chance you could maybe do a short guide on the A-10 ?
If possible, could you do one on the AFM. Using mouse and KB on that is not easy. Thanks :)
my main question is: what are your specs? your game looks astonishing. the lighting effects on those flares looked great

***** thanks!
Are you using the Warthog when piloting in Arma or are you using the other you've listed on your page?
hey Dslyecxi,
As always nice video, but can you tell me what are you using to get these beautiful ingame shots? Default ingame camera, some cinematic camera mod?
Agrenas It's something of my own creation, unreleased.
***** I see, thanks for the tip good sir.
