Well Guys... All these months later its finally time to continue our journey down the rabbit hole in the wonderful world that is Russo-Soviet aviation history. After our brief introduction to their fighter programs throughout the first half of the 20th century, the rise of "Amicable Adolf and the Spicy Pinwheel Gang" led to humanity storming into the jet age in explosive fashion. Yet in Moscow progress was lagging behind, but through violence, espionage and a little bit of crime, the come back was on.
In this video we take a look at the very first efforts of the Russo-Soviet Aviation industry in jet propulsion and the cavalcade of calamity which reads more like a Monty Python Movie than real history. So strap in for a wild ride, because as one war ends...

I frankly find amazing that Soviets THEMSELVES were not ashamed to admit they bought, copied and "enhanced" Rolls-Royce Nene and Derwent engines for their jet fighters Mig-15 and Mig-17. I have couple Soviet and Polish books about Eastern Bloc aviation from the 1960s and 1970s and they NEVER lied about it, when they tried to conceal the usage of the German engines...

    • @whtalt92

Lol. In books maybe. but in USSR people were told that it is our great engineers overwhelmed western capitalist pigs. 90% of russians still doesnt know that their pride "best soviet plombir" (icecream) was bought in so hated USA. So as most of their industrialization was build by american blueprints and bought by lives of Ukrainian people. They copied and stealed literally everything. Greetings from Ukraine.

In all fairness, although not an endorsement of the MiG-3 and Mikulin AM-35, it did outperform DB 601 Bf 109s at higher altitudes at the time. Then there was just the problem of the MiG-3 handling like a pig when not flying high and fast and having a piddly single HMG and 2x LMGs to actually down the opposition due to a lack of space and weight for better armament.

This came right after I had to bury my Great Grandfather, who was in the Evacuation of Odessa in WWII.
To this day he's furious at the Soviet Stavka for not letting the bulk of the Black Sea Fleet and Naval Air Service based in Kuban to support the evacuation.
Maybe so many people wouldn't have died had that old Battleship and the cruisers been there to soak up damage and blast away Stukas.

All I can say is Soviet brand Communism is a helluva drug. This series has me convinced the lunatics were running aerospace development in the USSR.

Talk to any non-Russian who lived under the USSR’s rule and they’ll tell you how the lunatics ran everything, not just aerospace.

      "Himn Ukraini" by DZIDZIO
A semi-famous mix using the sound of artillery fire for drumbeats under the title "Ukrainian National Anthem - War Edition" is on Sergey Karnatov's channel

I've noticed a remarcable theme in Russian aviation history:
Fixing the root-cause of a problem is so rarely the first step taken,
even when said problem known & understood.
To paraphrase something that is usually atributed to American foreign policy:
"They will do the right thing, once they've tried everything else".
Except the "doing the right thing" part often never came.

They try everything other than the root cause, and then they go to gulag.

The theme of this series is an indirect love letter to Soviet Engineers and Aviators. Who achieve miracles despite their government trying everything it can to sabotage or literally kill them.
