I frankly find amazing that Soviets THEMSELVES were not ashamed to admit they bought, copied and "enhanced" Rolls-Royce Nene and Derwent engines for their jet fighters Mig-15 and Mig-17. I have couple Soviet and Polish books about Eastern Bloc aviation from the 1960s and 1970s and they NEVER lied about it, when they tried to conceal the usage of the German engines...

Lyulka was in good company. General Electric used to do much the same, working on turbines and generators before making the (in fairness, somewhat) logical step to making turbojet engines.
I literally just wrote a 10 page paper for a history course and dedicated two of those pages towards Arkhyp Lyulka! He isn't super known or popular in history and I'm excited that you paid him attention.
epic. i wonder what stopped the designers to go all in on copy pasting designs and not try for the vampire or the meteor from the start. i mean, ts without a doubt that these were pretty reliable platforms, and even if they didnt have the specs, they could at least get insights into were you put the engine, thruster, and other systems. the gloucster meteor was just gorgeous also to look at and stayed in service in other air forces well into the 50s (israel, jordan for example..)
In all fairness, although not an endorsement of the MiG-3 and Mikulin AM-35, it did outperform DB 601 Bf 109s at higher altitudes at the time. Then there was just the problem of the MiG-3 handling like a pig when not flying high and fast and having a piddly single HMG and 2x LMGs to actually down the opposition due to a lack of space and weight for better armament.
This came right after I had to bury my Great Grandfather, who was in the Evacuation of Odessa in WWII. To this day he's furious at the Soviet Stavka for not letting the bulk of the Black Sea Fleet and Naval Air Service based in Kuban to support the evacuation. Maybe so many people wouldn't have died had that old Battleship and the cruisers been there to soak up damage and blast away Stukas.

To paraphrase something that is usually atributed to American foreign policy: "They will do the right thing, once they've tried everything else". Except the "doing the right thing" part often never came.
The theme of this series is an indirect love letter to Soviet Engineers and Aviators. Who achieve miracles despite their government trying everything it can to sabotage or literally kill them.
