Charles you influenced me to re-read the secret history (aka you came into my house and held a gun to my head and threatened the well being of my family)but I’m having a wonderful time reading it as the autumn chill is starting to make itself known and the leaves are changing so thank you.
i've been having such a terrible day and i thought "oh only if charles posted, every single one of my worries would go away" and then boom you actually did post :) thank you for that please dont leave us this fall im not able to do this without you no jokes
LOL fantastic story time! Also omg you said about book hauls "you're just doing it for content", no I'm literally not even thinking about potential videos when I walk into a bookstore. I am just possessed by a spirit, something comes over me and even though I have so many books I can't stop from getting more!!
poor Charles and his carrot juice dilemma. 😅 I love TJs BUT I HATE that they always ask "so what are your fun plans for the day/night?" Fun plans? What am I, a 5 year old? I just went to work to barely earn enough money to live, then came grocery shopping begrudgingly, then I'm gonna go on a 2-4 mile walk, then finally read for a few hours and go to bed since I have to wake up by 3:30/4am... not sure why they need to know anything about my life. I get that they're just being polite and obviously management makes them, but I don't like answering questions... and I always feel like I have the wrong answer for "fun" anyway .. ok rant over 😆
If you ever come to the Pacific Northwest, go to Portland and visit Powell's books. It spans a full city block, and you could pitch a tent there and take a month to go through their inventory. Amazing! BTW I've started the Three Body Problem trilogy. It's amazing.
yeah there's a film adaptation of The Dig which is pretty good if I remember it was beautifully shot. also would recommend the Sutton Hoo site as a cute day out if anyone is in the area and loves a boring archaeological site like me
Margaret Atwood was in front of me in customs last year during my trip to Greece. I looked at her and thought "huh, that woman looks exactly like Margaret Atwood..." then looked over at my mom and could tell she was looking at me about to say the same thing. When we cleared customs and got to the area where people are waiting with signs to pick strangers up, they were all specific, ie: "The Smith Family" or "Frank Jones" and there's one sign that just says "Margaret." I found that funny. Obviously she didn't want to be recognized. I checked her Twitter to see if I was correct and she was posting from Greece. We also saw the house where Zorba the Greek was written.
After Dark is my favorite Murakami, but I do have a thing for books about sleep. Omg, Anne Tyler was a queen decades before Elizabeth Strout held a crayon! Yes, Anne Tyler's books are about the minutia of life -- all so beautifully observed, and her books all double as love letters to Baltimore. After a lifetime of writing, it's a glorious body of work dedicated to her city and human nature. Try Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant or Celestial Navigation; my two favorites of hers.
The "getting burnt out on fiction after reading too many back-to-back lemons" experience is so relatable. Grabbed a couple food-related microhistories (Cod and Girly Drinks) recently for the same reason.
Omg two Charles 💕 To me it happened that a cashier says that we went to the same high school and it’s weird because her face looks familiar to me because she looks like one of my friends, but from high school i don’t remember her at all 🤔 and yeah I like to go one hour before closing because it seems that people take their whole family as if it were going to the park or something 🙄
I felt like watching your old video of you driving around and shopping for books because I’m homesick for the US, so I went to look for it. And it’s no longer there… The betrayal…💔 Put it back, please. 😂 The Dracula one was good, too.
Omg if you are getting into fairytales you MUST read Angela Carter’s A Bloody Chamber. Don’t you dare skip it! You must get a copy and read it! We have very similar tastes in books so I’m convinced you’d love it. The writing is the most gorgeous writing I’ve ever stumbled on and I’ve read thousands of books at this point! The tales are all based on actual fairy tales but they are dark, se*ual in nature(some are), but my good gawd, I’ve never read prose as sumptuous as what’s in that book!
Omg I needed this. I too have unwittingly collected like 5 Maugham books - including Cakes and Ale 😅. I’ve started The Razors Edge and love the premise. I have to get bk to it. I read The Executioners So g one Summer as a teenager and still think about it. Running as Therapy?!? That’s right up my alley.
Yet another wonderful book haul video!!! 🎉 Norman Mailer's two books and Somerset Maugham's novels look mighty interesting- I may just have to add these authors to my own wishlist!!! If in the future these books are not your cup of tea ☕, save them and I will buy them from you (Somerset Maugham and Norman Mailer)!!!!! May you have a marvelous, autumnal week: Laugh, smile, take care, have an absolute BLAST and until next time, colossal Mr. Charles!!!!! 🍁🍂😃
update for u charles: i LOVED frankenstein and AM a little peeved i never finished it til now and also i saw HBO came out with a Salem's Lot (show?movie?) so i will unfortunately NOT be finishing that book out of some kind of spite for Some Reason.
A solution for your odd number of items issue: bring a reusable bag (TJ sells them) so you don’t feel pressured to buy more stuff just to fill the paper bags. Enjoyed the story time 👍🏻
i want a book starting with your entire carrot juice story leading to a character trapped into the most fascinating leveled up boring human life adventure. i think this would become my favorite book of all time. (made me think a bit about the french author Emmanuel Carrere's books The mustache or A Man Asleep by Georges Perec, excellent ones you must give it a try)
Awww you're picking up a book from my country for the first time. ☺ Zorba was published right after the War and the author died 10 years later, I doubt he ever visited the States. I haven't either, so sad... The intro to this video should be published, it's up there with John Updike, King! Thanks for the amount of great videos lately, we doggies are not worthy.
I'd like to recommend you The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle, which is a truly beautiful story written in a very delicate and fairytale-like way, it's not too long and it reads very easily and leaves a lot of thoughts long after finishing it, so I think you would enjoy it :)
If you need encouragement, Atwood's Blind Assassin is a great book. You should check out Oryx and Crake, also by Margaret Atwood. Jung is fascinating and may spur you to read fiction influenced by Jung like Hesse's novels. Anything by Maugham is worth reading (obviously I am a fan).
What a journey of accents this was! When the TJ's cashier asks me about my plans for the rest of the day I always wish I had something exciting to say like, "oh, I'm rehearsing for a play" or "traveling to Spain" instead of just, I don't know, laundry and a crossword puzzle? Quit shaming your customers Trader Joe's! The apple shortbread cookies they have right now are 🔥🔥🔥, btw
Obsessed with the intros that feel like a rant your mom would immediately start in on as soon as you pick up her phone call that go on so long that she ultimately forgets why she called in the first place. You're literally still talking about carrot juice shopping and I'm at least 4 minutes in. Not being facetious- fully sincere.
I was enthralled by your carrot juice soliloquy. "...I lower my voice in the hopes that not talking in the future will erase what I've said in the past." Hilarious and brilliant.
Charles I adore The Corrections, it's really very good! There are slow parts but very worth the read. Sorry you are scizophrenic ❤ at least you have carrot juice
"a castrated Elizabeth Strout" 🤡🤡🤡 i've been trying to pinpoint a way to describe Tyler's writing and this could not be further from the truth. also would love to know what else king is consuming. The Sopranos is something i'm saving until i'm on my deathbed lowkey
I'm living for the intro monologues!
JOSH AND CHARLES TOGETHER IN THUMBNAIL OMG
Omg you made me remember about Josh, I almost forgot.😭🙏🏻
Are they twins, or boyfriends? Or both?
"They have two sizes, smoall, loarge...I get the large." Love you, Choarles.

@@cs0p since you called me doggie now i am claming you as my loyal human. Nope! No take backs. Too late.

Trader Joe's is excruciating, always, but it's always worth it.

for a good few minutes there i was so entertained by the raw carrot juice monologue i forgot this video was about books
you need to stop drooling on your laptop and get it together.
