You are so pretty it is difficult to concentrate on the books 😭. And this is coming from someone who teaches literature at a university, so affinity isn't the problem.
Your reading taste is impeccable. Although as an Englishwoman all I have is pain and anguish associated with Shakespear from having to read it at 12 years old. Steinbeck East of Edens is a masterpiece. Have you read Ubik by Philip K Dick. It felt like reading a movie.
Thanks! Yes, unfortunately many English teachers terrorize their students with Shakespeare and do a bad job teaching him. No, I haven't, but I have a copy! Maybe it'll be the next PKD that I read.....
I had no idea how many books we read this year were the same. I read East of Eden for the first time and I also consider it one of my favorite reads of the year. I thought I was going to struggle with it because I couldn't make it through Grapes of Wrath (I'll give that book another go someday), but I absolutely enjoyed East of Eden. It gave me the confidence to tackle other difficult classical literature, I read The Count of Monte Cristo and finished it.
Also discovered your channel recently! Discovering so many new texts through you. Want to also take a moment to say that you find really beautiful editions of the books you read. Good stuff and happy new year!
can't believe you gave the bell jar two stars 😮💨
It is so sad!! Maybe I could be convinced to bump it up to 3....

Frankenstein is my favorite book! The themes, the truths told and the state of the human condition are still relevant and endure to this day.

I also hated sun& steel lol. I wonder if it'll be the same with the rest of his work. Less motivated now
I've heard that his fiction is more accessible.... maybe try Spring Snow?

Hard to say.... from what I read this year, maybe East of Eden, Frankenstein, or Return of the Native. But I bet there are sadder ones out there
May I suggest you a writer for you to read in 2025? Nikos Kazantzakis. Trust me, you won't regret it.
