The Little Friend is all about characters, the transformation of Harriet...I loved how satisfying that was without any resolve about her brother's death. I can't believe you haven't read Goldfinch yet, you're crazy.
I’m reading My Year of Rest and Relaxation right now and I’m loving it. I recently read Eileen and it was sooo good ! I want to read all her books now.
I think this is my third comment on your channel, but again, I had to comment on how happy you made this girl, originally from Brooklyn, you putting A Tree Grows In Brooklyn on your list was just the ultimate end of a great reading rec video. Thank you from a 56 year old from New York!(Long Island).
CHARLES the way you roll your eyes when you think you say something silly is so funny. I love the occasional background noises of real life and the upfront honesty. ❤ Also, I have an idea. Let's combine book baddie/saddie to book sbaddie and pronounce it like sbarro. Until the next video, love. 🫶
Your videos are really good, but as the chief “actor” in the video, you have to come up with more and varied facial expressions. The eye roll comes up a bit too often.
I found your channel recently, so I'm going through and watching some of your older videos. I visited a couple used bookstores last weekend, and based on things you've recommended, I bought a collection of E. M. Forster books and The Fountainhead. I don't know if I would have given them a second look before, and now they're books I spent actual money on.
I capture the castle has been my favorite book for years. It is so underrated, i'm glad to see someone acknowledge it! Would love to see more dodie smith videos
A better, more perfect description of winter I have never heard. This intro was perfection. Felt all the emotions that winter brings. Well done. Enjoyed video! Look forward to reading the Thousand Acres and the mystery (will to go back for precise info). Wonderful recommendations. ❄️
Oh myyyy I loved stoner so much as well!! At first I was reluctant if I would actually like it hahaha because I wasn’t sure about the synopsis . But then I read it and I was blown away and then life fit directly into a puzzle for a moment lolol. And I loved my year of rest and relaxation, totally agree with what you said about it! Love your channel so much too! Looking forward to any videos you put up! (If u want ofc)!!!
i was skeptical too! i love the life fitting into a puzzle you moment when you read a book like stoner and my year. im glad youre having fun around these parts ;)
A Tree Grows In Brooklyn was such a favorite of mine that I gifted it to a couple of younger friends, thinking it might help them face potential life woes. But I don't think they ever read it. Francie, I often thought of her, hope she had a good life.
I read the little friend when I was 17 or 18 so maybe 6 or 7 years ago… all my life I had been scared of the face on the cover when I saw it on my parents bookshelf. When I read it I was disappointed but you’re really making me want to read it again
I also found my year of rest and relaxation cathartic! Eileen hits so good in the winter too, I’m curious if the movie will live up to the book. And I’m so glad to see someone giving the little friend some praise it’s one of my all time favorites
I love listening to you while doing my chores and then noting down what I liked when I heard and go find the books. Your recs are a breath of fresh air, and different. And I am all here for it
I’m so happy to see this video because I was thinking a few days ago when you posted the previous one how I can listen to you talk about literally anything.. Haven’t started watching this video just yet but I have a suggestion, and I’m sure all your fans will agree- post more frequently and talk about your thoughts on basically anything from weather to holidays to people crossing the street..
I couldn’t agree more about Where Angels Fear To Tread is such a treat. And is a zinger plot. Since I’m now Moshfegh verified…meaning I’ve read the 2 books of hers you have…I think I’m ready for My Year of R&R. I tried it before I had read any Moshfegh and didn’t get it. Now I do. You’ve sold me on Euphoria! I read Writers & Lovers and liked it. You’ve also so,d me on A Tree Grows In Brooklyn. I remember having to read it in Jr High. I don’t remember anything about it other than I vaguely recall enjoying it. An edition I found in Goodwill…man you’re blowing up my TBR with this video!
I aboslutely loved Rest and Relaxation and The Little Friend, so totally agree with "ratings." Ironically, I didn't really love The Secret History. I dearly hope you are around UA-cam in a year if you want to be! I love your channel!
Forster is one of my favourite authors, and Howards End is my favourite book, and the one I've read more times than any other. A Room With a View is also a great read, if you haven't yet, and slim (more summer than winter though I'd suggest). Passage to India is a tough nut to crack, but worth it. I'm currently reading Midwinter Murder. A collection of short stories by Agatha Christie, featuring Poirot, Marple eta al. Last night I watched your bid to uncover the murderer in Caribbean Mystery. Intriguing and entertaining. Good job.
howards end really is fantastic. ive been itching to reread it instead of going through his other books. i recently got a collection of Christie's short stories! im not feeling very inclined to pick them up over her novels i havent read though 🫣
I’d love to see you try to recommend a book for an album… like the general vibe or themes of any of your favourite artists. Your taste in books is elite, so music shouldn’t be too different 🤭
An excellent presentation, Charles, in its quiet, reflective, melancholy way. (Unlike some of your more manic performances.) I agree about The Little Friend completely - tho the lack of ‘solution’ was disappointing.
I ALWAYS have to watch your videos two or three times. They are really comforting to watch and you always talk about books that don't get a lot of attention on here. I love how you have your own reading habits and ways of choosing what to read next. It's nice to see how eclectic your taste in literature is. Plus you always have interesting things to say about them. [You're also very beautiful! Just... wow. 😄] I just ordered a copy of 'I capture the castle' because of you. I knew OF the book but never read it, but thanks to you I finally will. Thanks! Looking forward to reading it this Winter. Oh, wanted to ask (since you like 'I capture...': have you read 'Little women'? Also a very cosy and beautifully written book.)
!! im honored you enjoy them so much. youll have to tell me what you think of Castle. i havent read little women! i watched the most recent movie and really enjoyed it though. maybe ill pick up the book
I own like most of these and my TBR is just a disaster. But I love Evelyn Hardcastle. I always enjoy a good traditional mystery but the genre-bending sets it apart!
I adore Winter (and you). I agree with you 100% regarding Goodreads ratings. I believe the average user must be 14 years-old. 'A tree grows up in Brooklyn' is sooo popular in my country, I loved it was a teenager. And yes, it's a bildungsroman, like Jean-Christophe.
thanks for the recommendations, looking forward to reading some of them this winter! ("stoner", "euphoria" and "my year of rest and relaxation" sound especially tempting) ive been keeping "the little friend" safely tucked away since its the last tartt's book that i havent read... maybe its finally time (praying to santa for her next book to drop soon lol) depression status: not TOO depressed but goddamn it sucks when sun goes down at 3 pm, feeling tired ALL the time 😓 i hope youre not too depressed yourself😉
Time for my report: I read "Stoner", it was awesome, 5 stars. It was so melancholic, so beautiful... I'm still saving "my little friend", kind of want to save it for autumn, but we'll see. I know it will be SO good and that's maybe why I'm postponing reading it lol I am also 75% through "Out", which wasn't talked about in this vid but maybe in 2023 fav books? And man, it was a wild ride. I think I really like it? I might report after I've finished it cause I do feel like the end is going to be crazy and the question is: crazy good or crazy bad? But until this point I've been enjoying it, though I am already feeling ready to move on from it... Spring is finally starting here in Sweden btw, now it's bright until 7pm 😊
This is a fantastic list!!! I MUST read more E.M. Forster, so this is perfect!!! Your copy of Where Angels Fear To Tread is GORGEOUS!?!?! Can you tell me what edition it is? The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hugo looks perfect, as well as Donna Tartt's The Little Friend and Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres!!!!! Your recommendations are in my top lists to buy- thank you so very much!!!!! Keep the fantabulous content coming and until next time, spectacular Mr. Charles!!!!! 🎉❤ 😀
When recommending a Thousand Acres you mentioned that you hate western. We have a similar taste in books so I wanted to make a suggestion (I typically hate western, too). You’ve probably heard of/seen the film The Power of the Dog, but I’d highly recommend the classic it was based on (of the same title - by Thomas Savage). The tension and the characters are excellent, almost palpable. The book is very atmospheric, layered and quite chilling. While mostly drama, it’s a really intelligent thriller. I just loved it :') Sorry for spamming you, King. I adore your videos and I’ll be sure to give a Thousand Acres a try.
The novel Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis (postwar, English) may be a little bit similar to Stoner in the sense that it follows the life of a professor, although LJ is def more satirical and tries to make fun of aspects of academia and leading that kind of life. I’ve been wanting to read Stoner!!
I’m begging for you to read ‘Atonement’ by Ian McEwan!! It’s my favourite book and one of his best. It also has some of the ‘aspects of humanity’ that you refer to a lot.
Based on your recommendations (most of which I love), I totally recommend reading "Fall on your Knees" by Ann-Marie MacDonald. It's also a very winter-y novel and is one of my top faves. Yes, part of it is set around World War 1, but it's honestly such a haunting, epic, beautiful, and honest depiction of humanity. I don't ever recommend this book to men, but I think you'll enjoy it based on your suggestions!
FIRST OF ALL how can you look so fuckin BEAUTIFUL 😠 the attire ahhh!!! I'm mesmerized . Secondly,i wasn't goin to read more books this year but as now you have recommended i have to 🧎🏼♀️.
I'm planning to read "where the angels fear to tread"idk if it's the beginner friendly book as it is my first E.M. Forster And after this I'll read stoner I was keeping it for 2024 but now your review have Bewitched me.
Another enjoyable video - many thanks. I have read quite a few books on your list but haven't read Euphoria yet which has been sitting on my book shelf for some time. Its very snowy and frosty where I live - I love this kind of weather, so much so, that I plan to fly to Nepal🇳🇵to hike to Everest Base Camp next year. Any recommendations for snowy mountain books gratefully received. 🌎🌍🌏❄❄❄
omg thats so so cool. i would probably die if i tried. hmmm plot twist but maybe the hobbit? so you have a different world to visit when youre freezing and desolate. OR save euphoria!!
(Sorry if this comment posts twice by mistake lol my phone be glitching) Finally getting to watching the whole thing. And omg i adore that quote u said about how trying to please everyone actually pleases no one. Word! My life motto. Id rather be adored by few and hated by others than liked by all. Please don’t feel lonely in winter, Charles. I know how it feels. Just went thru a bad breakup and it hurt even more cuz even when i was with her i was lonely. It’s one of those emotions that everyone feels but nobody talks about. I’m here if u need someone. UA-cam doesnt have a dm feature anymore but i’m sure you can find another way to contact me :) my internet life is very public LMAO for better or for worse
CALLI 😭 you are so damn kind. i dont have any other social media but always reach out here if i can do anything. i hope the breakup has been hurting less. looking forward to more music from you...
Have you ever read A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara? It kinda fits the theme you mentioned and I think you would like it based off your recs its superrrr depressing I would look up trigger warnings first tbh
I do hope I haven't upset you too much with my comments. I have a habit of being too honest sometimes. In this little corner of the internet, I feel like I can be authentic. I don't know how much sense I'm making. Merry christmas - From your biggest fan 🤪
I will never not try to make someone read a cather in the rye, its my favorite winter book. PLEASE read it and give me your thoughts;-) and since you liked my year of rest and relaxation you should read the yellow wallpaper, its good. AND theyre both short.
yellow wallpaper is in my cart on ebay AS WE SPEAK. i cant believe i havent read catcher in the rye yet. ill pick it up in the next few months or ill give you $5
hi charles. im 16 and very depressed. i read the bell jar last week.. and i left it after like 150 pages cuz it got too relatable minus the new york part. and it made me wonder if, (i wana go to paris and leave everything behind harry styles wrote matilda about me) after having had reached the goals or achieved the achievements i planned am i still gonna be sad? like should i even care at this point? like it doesn't get better, it never got better, i was 3 when my life became shit and it hasnt gotten better. and should i hold on to hope? idk. pls tell me what u think. also rec books like tuesdays with morrie and dead poets society.. i like those... keep me 'escaped' from reality and also make me hopeful about when ill finally be out. u know. so yea. xo
not me tearing up in a goddamn panera. you should always care and always hold out (of course indulging in a bit of moping every now and then is necessary). 16 is so young!! you have so so much ahead of you. it's a little corny, but just getting through each day is an accomplishment. i cant say ive cracked the secret to being happy, but doing meaningful work helps a bunch. Achievements dont always help, but working towards them does. talk to someone in your life! if you're not comfortable with friends or family, teachers are a great option (during their lunch period or after school). big big hugs
shut tf up ive never heard of either of these. Edinburgh sounds amazing. you definitely have hot baddie literary taste and im not sensing its a pose...

it's the "vintage classics" edition! it is very gorgeous. Evelyn is a fun mystery for this time of year 👀🫶
You should read all the lovers in the night. I think you'll really like it. Also great for winter.
i will look into it thank you...
stoner was so good !!
sooo so good idk if i want to reread it or pick up another of his books first
When recommending a Thousand Acres you mentioned that you hate western. I just loved it :')
Sorry for spamming you, King. I adore your videos and I’ll be sure to give a Thousand Acres a try.
spam me ALWAYS baby. i havent heard of the power of the dog! i have added to my tbr tho... tell me if you try 1000 acres!!
You really trigger my reading spirit. I will now put down the phone and open the book. I am now reading , and after this I will go for E.M. Forster.
i am honored to inspire 🫣 enjoy forster!!
"Depressing, bleak... highly recommend" made me laugh
it's like the motto for this channel ;)
The novel Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis (postwar, English) may be a little bit similar to Stoner in the sense that it follows the life of a professor, although LJ is def more satirical and tries to make fun of aspects of academia and leading that kind of life. I’ve been wanting to read Stoner!!
mmm i think i just picked up a book by his son unless im making that up. ill look into lucky jim. you have to read stoner it is so so good and sad
@@cs0p yeahhh stoner seems like it’s right up my alley! Lol you’re right Martin Amis is his son, def an interesting dynamic there
I’m begging for you to read ‘Atonement’ by Ian McEwan!! It’s my favourite book and one of his best. It also has some of the ‘aspects of humanity’ that you refer to a lot.
!! ok convinced i will try....
Hostage #356 appreciates the update.
I have added it to my list thank you!
FIRST OF ALL how can you look so fuckin BEAUTIFUL 😠 the attire ahhh!!! I'm mesmerized .
Secondly,i wasn't goin to read more books this year but as now you have recommended i have to 🧎🏼♀️.
hahah thank you! tell me what you think of the book you choose...
I'm planning to read "where the angels fear to tread"idk if it's the beginner friendly book as it is my first E.M. Forster
And after this I'll read stoner I was keeping it for 2024 but now your review have Bewitched me.
@@cs0p 😅😅😅
Bloody wondrous!
thank you baby youre flattering me and i like it
I recommend Alice Munro's short story collections for winter. Great stories about life ❤
i will check her out... thank you
Read Pale Fire…it’s a good winter book 👍🏽
ive been meaning to! i might do lolita first...
The movie of I capture the castle with Bill Nighy (not the science guy) is brilliant
AHHAH bye if its not the science guy i dont want it
(Sorry if this comment posts twice by mistake lol my phone be glitching) Finally getting to watching the whole thing.
@@cs0p 💚💚💚💚
I think you’ve been at my bookshelves
yea? what are you gonna do about it?? 😤😌
Mate, we have the same tastes, so we need some mutual recs
If you put any book in the fridge it will be cold and therefore perfect for winter Charles
youre making some very good points...
Have you ever read A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara? It kinda fits the theme you mentioned and I think you would like it based off your recs its superrrr depressing I would look up trigger warnings first tbh
i havent...maybe ill do a video on it...
The Call by John Hersey
Little Big Man by Thomas Berger
You should do a video on classics you like or plan to read
i have been meaning to make some sort of classics vid....maybe i will...
I do hope I haven't upset you too much with my comments. I have a habit of being too honest sometimes. In this little corner of the internet, I feel like I can be authentic. I don't know how much sense I'm making. Merry christmas - From your biggest fan 🤪
you could comment 100 times on each video and id treasure responding to each and every single one ;)
@@cs0p This is my favorite corner of the internet! Merry Christmas 🤍🎄
I just want to say that as a fellow poor reader you've got good taste
hahah thank you ;)
Sandra Bernhard is your patronus.
I will never not try to make someone read a cather in the rye, its my favorite winter book. PLEASE read it and give me your thoughts;-) and since you liked my year of rest and relaxation you should read the yellow wallpaper, its good. AND theyre both short.
yellow wallpaper is in my cart on ebay AS WE SPEAK. i cant believe i havent read catcher in the rye yet. ill pick it up in the next few months or ill give you $5
Ugh I wanna read more Forster
do it do it do it!
@@cs0p yesss I wanna read Maurice
hi charles. im 16 and very depressed. i read the bell jar last week.. and i left it after like 150 pages cuz it got too relatable minus the new york part. and it made me wonder if, (i wana go to paris and leave everything behind harry styles wrote matilda about me) after having had reached the goals or achieved the achievements i planned am i still gonna be sad? like should i even care at this point? like it doesn't get better, it never got better, i was 3 when my life became shit and it hasnt gotten better. and should i hold on to hope? idk. pls tell me what u think. also rec books like tuesdays with morrie and dead poets society.. i like those... keep me 'escaped' from reality and also make me hopeful about when ill finally be out. u know. so yea. xo
not me tearing up in a goddamn panera. you should always care and always hold out (of course indulging in a bit of moping every now and then is necessary). 16 is so young!! you have so so much ahead of you. it's a little corny, but just getting through each day is an accomplishment. i cant say ive cracked the secret to being happy, but doing meaningful work helps a bunch. Achievements dont always help, but working towards them does. talk to someone in your life! if you're not comfortable with friends or family, teachers are a great option (during their lunch period or after school). big big hugs
another video so soon! ty book daddy
of course, loyal fan.
my two reds based on your criteria are cold enough for snow by jessica an and edinburgh by alexander chee
